Review for the GoVideo DV1140
I purchased the DV 1140 a few months back for $79.00 to replace my old DVD player that went out on me.I have to say that as a DVD player it should only be looked at as a temporary one until you can get a better one.It's just a basic DVD player with no real features to it at all.It can't even play Video CDs.When I looked on the box it says it plays CD-R, CD-RW et al so I assumed it will play my movies that I burned to CD-R but it only mean audio files like mp3s.It also said it played WMAs but once again don't expect it to be videos.Just certain audios.My old DVD player was only $30.00 and it played practially everything!Why this one cost more and doesn't is beyond me.
Disappointing User Interface
Go Video removed the capability to play Video CD's (VCD) from this model, compared to their pre-2003 models. Why? Amazing DVD Player for playing DVD+/-R
I bought this DVD/VCR Combo for $119 and it works amazingly well.The DVD player works better than my Cyberhome 402 and the VCR plays flawlessly.The standard Universal remote that comes with it is better than most DVD players supply today.The buttons are a decent size on the remote and can control most TV sets.Read more

It's from the stone ages!!!Not user friendly.
If you like to record shows, and also be able to watch video tapes, this is not the VCR/DVD combo for you.A unit like this should be easy to use, and you don't have to remember a bunch of steps before you can use it.For instance, if you programmed the VCR to record, you are not allowed to watch videos until you cancel your programmed recordings.So, after you watch your video, and if you forget to put the VCR back into program, it doesn't record.It just shouldn't be this difficult.

Bad Buy
Purchased 11/02 - after warranty ran out, unit began eating commercial VHS tapes.After prying tape out of unit, DVD worked, but now that is bad as well - unit continues to shut down automatically.Funai/Sylvania is no help an no service local to my area in Columbus, OH??Repair probably higher than $135 cost - junk.Ignored the advice not to purchase combos - never again.

Timer recording and calendar dates buggy
I purchased this unit as for my secondary TV.I have had problems with the dates matching the days of the week and wrong number of days in a given month (often shows 31 days for months that only have 30, etc.) when setting up timer recording, causing shows not to be recorded. At first I thought this might be a bug because 2003 was a leap year, but still persist in 2004. Piece of Junk

Careful with this one...
As the other reviewer pointed out, you get what you pay for.Has decent picture quality, but poor audio, and after less than 24 hours of operation, the unit stopped working, and high-pitched whine started emitting from the rear of the unit.Don't bother with this unit.

If you value your sanity, avoid this piece of junk at all costs.
I have been in the computer field a number of years. So, it isn't very difficult for me to understand and operate most any equipment. I have had plenty of hands on experience with DVD/RW technology. This particular unit promises a lot of service, but seriously fails to deliver. First, I agree that set up was very easy. It would have been even easier if LiteOn has put all the parts they promised in the box. Second, the manual that accompanies this product was written by some one who has little or no command of the English language. Third, it will play and a VHS tape fairly well. So will any cheap VCR. The unit is extremely slow to play or record. Fourth, Copying to a DVD is a complicated process. The recorder will often skip in time, or speed up. That is of course the system doesn't crash. Fifth, the noise it makes while recording is similar to having a small gerbil trapped inside the machine. Sixth, there is no room for human error on the DVD recording. Once you start recording it is impossible to shut down. In addition, you can not record with the VCR in this unit even though it's implied. Seventh, the system is set up to accept only certain manufactures DVD's. The unit simply wouldn't accept anything else with out failing. Eighth, there is no instant record. It's a lengthy complicated process that has severe limitations.Finally, calling Tech support is a joke. The 800 number has been changed to a long distance number. I am suspicious that it is out side the U.S. It takes a very long time to get to actually speak to some one.After that it was very difficult to get a straight answer to technical questions. Save your self the aggravation. Look for another combo. This one is not worth it.

Great, easy to use. Replacement for a VCR
I'd been debating getting a DVR, a DVD recorder, a HD recorder, etc. for a while when the VCR broke. As it turns out, I need a VCR for work so I picked up the LiteOn VCR/DVD-recorder.

Samsung is a lemon brand! Do not buy from them!
First of all I tried to tuned in the TV channels, and only 3/5 of the commercial channels worked. Secondly I try and put a DVD in and the remote control is not very receptive. You repeatedly push the button and nothing happens when you try and use it. Thirdly it is slow and sluggish. Fourthly, now it won't accept NTSC and only PAL DVD's! Even though they were fine in the past. I put a NTSC DVD in, and the screen quality looked very poor and went green and now the VHS video side will work!
Stopped working after a week
Seemed like a great value at first, but DVD player stopped working within a week.If you chance it, save your receipt!

Great Bang for the Buck
I'm not looking for anything fancy, but I want something to play the media I use.This unit plays +R's without a problem and does a nice job with store-bought dvd's as well (my combo Toshiba SD-K220S started having a problem sticking in the middle of the movie).

JVC has always manufactured the best S-VHS recorders. You get 400 lines of resolution when you record on S-VHS tape in the SP mode. Good little VCR
If you are using Hi8 and/or Digital 8 then this VCR will be useful to you. The other guys pretty much summed up the features. I bought mine about 3 years ago. I use it to input video to my editing computer to save wear and tear on my cameras. It's also capable of editing but I do all that with the PC. You could just connect it to a TV and use it for 8mm playback. The quality is good and it's got inputs/outputs for everything. I am glad someone makes a VCR for the 8mm formats. I highly recommend it!

The only thing I miss with this device is a MEMORY STICK. Sony SUPER MINI ALL 8mm format player & digital8 recorder!

Quality combo product - no compromises
This is my second dvd/vcr combo and I primarily wanted the ability to convert VHS tapes to DVD but also was looking for a better DVD player.I found just about everything I was looking for.Recording to DVD is very easy, and you have every conceivable format (-+R,RW).I've tested whether the recorded DVDs work on other, older players and they do.The DVD player is a little slow to load, but picture, sound, and controls are outstanding.VCR is fine, though we don't use it much other than for transferring home movies to DVD.Caution - I have not found the remote for this system to be compatible with "universal remotes" - even for my Sony surround sound system!But overall, a great spacesaver that doesn't make you sacrifice quality for the various components. ...
