5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba is sending me a new unit!!
I bought mine in Oct. of 2003. I have the same problem with the DVD player that others have been complaining about.I called Toshiba and a VERY nice lady is sending me a new updated model as soon as I send in my old unit. The trick is to call Toshiba's Customer Service number (800) 631-3811.2-0 out of 5 stars Loved it till it broke
Loved the easy hook-up, easy use of remote, looked nice and played fine.Purchased 11-06-03, and the DVD part stopped without warning 05-29-04.The kids never touched this one; it was all for Mommy and therefore subject to only gentle use.Now if you put a DVD in, it takes a long time to load, then comes up "ERR."And now the door makes a grinding noise when it opens.Severely disappointed, heartbroken, etc.Apparently VCRs, DVD players, and these combo units are meant to be disposable - work six months and then discard. If so, we may as well disregard brand names and buy the cheapest ones available.Forget quality, reliability, and pride of workmanship - those are things of the past.

3-0 out of 5 stars Globalization: You get what you pay for (and deserve)
Like cheap prices on products made in China? Do you actually expect them to work like Japanese electronics manufactured in the 1980's just because the Japanese brand is printed on the cabinet? Get real. There's no such a thing as a free-lunch.DVD margins are too low.So is quality. Period.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware!
I bought THREE of these things over the last two years ... at least two of them from Amazon. (The actual model number was different -- XVC20U in black -- but it's basically the same combo deck they've been selling for several years now.)

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a sony!
I've been without a vcr for a couple of months and have been reading different reviews. I have always like sony, but after reading some reviews I was worried about this model. I went for it anyway and am very pleased.Best I have ever had and very easy to set up. It's does have a cable mousethat you can get for about $20 and that let's you record with dss and cablebox's while useing your timer. You can't do that with most vcr's so Ithought that was a nice option. Anyway the picture is great, it's easy tohook up, and has some nice options. I'm tickled!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great picture but no replacement parts available
I have had this VCR for several months now and have enjoyed it since the day I bought it and hooked it up.The sound and picture quality are excellent.1-0 out of 5 stars A bust!
I've hooked up lots of VCRs and this is the only one that wanted a cable mouse! What the heck is that?2-4 weeks to get one.Nothing worked asdescribed in the manual.I wanted a Sony but I've got a learningdisability and I couldn't figure this out.Neither could my wife who has a4 year computer science degree. And no you skeptics, our clocks don'tflash 12 at the house. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars JUST SAY NO!!!!!!
I am very frustrated with this product AND the support (or lack of) from Philips. This product began malfunctioning shortly after the 1-year warranty ended. I first began having problems with the DVD player. The DVD would either be read slowly or not at all. Eventually, I could not play anything in the DVD player. Now the VCR is no longer working. The video tape is stuck inside and I have the message "Err 2" blinking on the display. When I reported these problems to Philips, I received the following message:
1-0 out of 5 stars The worst of the worst! The Gigli of DVD players!
For a $135 I got a DVD player that only lasted one year before it stopped working. You'd think Philips outsourced production of this DVD player to IKEA and customer support to the DMV.Do not waste your money on this piece of junk.Oh, and good luck trying to find a Philips product support site for this piece of crap.If Philips won't stand by its products, why should you?Philips should really take the walk of shame on this one.No soup for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars DVD player broke after a year!
It was very disappointing to have an expensive (at the time of purchase over $200) piece of equipment break shortly after a year. and just after the warranty also ran out. The DVD player started skipping, then there was a clicking sound, and then finally a disc error, saying it can't read it, when the disc is perfectly fine and works in other players. The laser must be extremely poor in this machine. I will not buy another Phillips product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sylvania DVC865F Progressive Scan DVD/VCR Dual Deck

4-0 out of 5 stars GOT MY MONEY'S WORTH
WORKS AS ADVERTISED, PICTURE QUALITY IS GREAT, CAN BE OPERATED BY THE TEHNICALLY CHALANGED.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
My experience with my DVD/VCR player has been very good. I wanted a unit for my bedroom that would have all the features I wanted, without being terribly expensive. This unit fits the bill. The remote in particular is great. All the most useful functions are right at your fingertips and are easy to find, even in dim light, since some buttons are red and some are shaded with dark grey. My favorite feature is the Resume Play, which allows you to pick up a DVD at the point that you stopped it, even if you turn the machine off. Many of your less expensive DVD players do not have that feature.

2-0 out of 5 stars Look for something else
I can't suggest what else to try, but this one probably won't make you happy. I bought this and never really figured out how to make it work. I constantly got disc error messages and spent quite a bit of money on different DVD discs.I think I did record a couple shows/movies, but never got around to watch them. The DVD drawer quit working after approximately 30-40 openings/closings (a couple months). I returned the unit ($15 or so for shipping....my dime). I just got a call that they have to replace the unit (newer d-vr5 model). It's been out of my hands for over a month now and it will take another 2-3 weeks to get a replacement.
5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba d-vr4 Dvd Recorder
I have had this product for 2 months now, and I haven't had any major problems. It works great with Dvd-Ram, Dvd-r, and Dvd-Rw.The vhs side has worked fine for the most part.Twice while going from vhs to dvd, the video quality was severely reduced--the color was almost gone.If I did nothing, it would duplicate that way, but with a restart, it cleared up and was fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super easy dubbing, easy controls and OVERALL great buy!
We've had our unit 1 year now and haven't had any trouble with it unlike other reviewers. As with ANY electronics, they are very sensitive around moving, bumping, or moisture.I would never buy an "open box unit" from anywhere! This Toshiba is top notch in many ways.I'm impressed with the recording quality when dubbing onto DVR discs, it's a one touch operation and does a very good job.We have noticed that taping on VHS for those shows you don't want to miss doesn't have the best picture quality, the images are grainy. But since we're just viewing those shows once and then recording over them the next time we miss a show, that's acceptable to us.So, for the important stuff, being recorded ontop DVR, this Toshiba gets a standing ovation!DVR finalization is quick and easy and gives you some nice menu options with captions and picture. It organizes your disc menu so you can see and select what order you want to view.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Remote and Input jacks
I returned this item (and bought the Panasonic DMR-ES30VS) for primarily two reasons.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice!
I bought this unit so that I could save stuff from my TiVo and copy some old VHS tapes to DVD.So far, so good!I have made about 20 DVD recordings. The only problem I ran into was when I was trying to copy a movie from VHS to DVD (this movie is not available on DVD yet) and it wouldn't let me copy it because it is copyrighted.I really wanted to make a DVD of it, since it is no longer available.
1-0 out of 5 stars Save yourself the frustration and buy a different brand
I actually have an earlier model Samsung DVD player, and it, along with other Samsung models at the time, had a horrible skipping problem on many DVDs. Samsung's support was almost non-existant -- I found out there was a firmware upgrade for the player, but not through their website (where I couldn't find any help whatsoever), but through a friend with the same problem. HOWEVER, the firmware upgrade did not resolve the problem, and the last I heard, there was a class action suit filed here in Pennsylvania (which I received an invitiation to be a part of, but could not participate in, I think because I no longer had the receipt). Considering their lackluster customer support, I would advise anyone against buying any DVD player from this company. Players are much cheaper nowadays anyway, and you can get an excellent Sony or Toshiba for a modest price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great VCR DVD player and burner
I've had this machine for over a year and have had no problems with it.Once you get used to the process for dubbing from vhs to dvd it is easier to use.I've burned many dvds and have only had trouble with a couple the machine was unable to read to be able to record on.Thanks to other reviews I've read I always finalize the dvds so they can be viewed on other machines with no problem.I would buy this unit again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Strong for 6 months
I have had this unit for approximately a year now.For the first 6 mnths it worked fine. After that time period we would be watching a dvd movie and half way through the picture will go black, but you could still here the sound. If we rebooted the system, and jump scenes to where the trouble began, it would generally resume and work fine.Over the past couple of months this occurs 3 to 4 times each movie. When we finally get too frustrated and take the same disk to the back of the house and put it in our cheapo GE player...it plays fine.I would not waste my money on this product.

2-0 out of 5 stars Customer Service Lacking !!!
Unit # 1 functioned briefly, returned for replacement . Amazon service excellent.

I liked the unit when I first received it, but really only used it a dozen times within a year and a half. My daughter went to use it the other day and told me it wasn't working, as usual I thought it was something she was doing wrong. I looked at it and said you have to turn the power on my dear for the unit to work, she just looked at me and walked away. Two hours later I was still trying to turn the power on, it was dead with no signs of life. Not sure what happenend but all of my other electronics were working fine, so I ruled out any kind of lighting strike. Of course I was a few months out of warranty and when I called a Phillips representative to find out where I could take it to get repaired he just told me to take it to Best Buy. I didn't even know Best Buy repaired electronics, I don't think they do. Overall I would say now this is a bad experience since I paid $386 for the unit and barely used it at all, now I have to get it repaired or just junk it. So stay away and buy a Sony, that is what all my other electronic toys are and some I had for about 20 yrs and are still working fine and never purchased an extended warranty either.

1-0 out of 5 stars An unreliable piece of garbage
I am totally frustrated with the Philips DVDR600VR. I recorded exactly 2 DVDs before it quit working. Now I can't get it to either read or record a DVD. The remote is awful as the unit responds to the commands at an extremely slow pace. A complete waste of over $300. Now I have to send it in for repair.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy at your own risk
I've had this unit over a year, and have had LOTS of problems. It conked out shortly after I bought it and had to go back to the factory for over 2 months. Now it has a new set of annoying habits, particularly a loud fan that goes on and off seemingly at random.Look for something else! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DAEWOO IS KOREAN WORD FOR CRAP
Worst piece of electronics I ever purchased. Started acting up almost immediately. Hit rewind and machine shuts down and ejects tape. BUYER BEWARE!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless junk
I bought this unit at Costco since it was about 50 dollars cheaper than the others I've seen.Out of the 12 dvds I've made so far, only 4 work. The unit repeatedly froze up either while updating the disk after a recording or while finalizing a disk.Out of the 8 disks that did finish finalizing successfully, only four of them worked. The player would say that the other were Blank discs, but if you tried to write to them it would say the disc is full.
2-0 out of 5 stars Utilitarian, ineligant, buggy, annoying.
I bought this unit last year because Fry's had it at a smoking price and I wanted a way to convert all our family videos to DVD before they died a heat and dust death. This was my first DVD recorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars note the speed of the blank dvd's you use!
i bought this unit almost 2 years ago and am still very pleased with it. so far ive recorded over 400 movies to dvd (transferring from vhs and from satellite, tv). the quality of the picture is great and all movies susequently play well on my two other dvd players. looking at the other reviews i can tell i may be the exception. the unit has froze on me 4 or 5 times during finalization of discs, but after unplugging/plugging the unit continued to work fine. as another reviewer stated, u do need to be patient using the controls and not push too many buttons at once. the response is quite slow and too many commands seem to freeze the unit.
1-0 out of 5 stars a few downfalls
the only thing i know is a major problem is the remotes with these units are no good!!!! and you can't get a replacement, I have been waiting for it since February..
