2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This product could be a lot better.
3-0 out of 5 stars Be Warned:The Remote Requires Accurate Aiming
The remote control might drive you batty. You have to point it directly at whatever it's controlling in order for it to work.Besides the obvious, this means that unless you've memorized the buttons and can feel which is which, you must hold the remote level and then lean forward to read its labels and press its buttons.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable DVD Player
I purchased three Sonly SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Combos. Of the three, two have had to be returned within the first 30 days because of the DVD player. All seems well until the DVD player freezes. Then from that point on it refuses to load any DVD. It attempts to load for several minutes, then an error message appears on the screen stating that the disc cannot be read. Avoid this unit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice VCR, brakes (on mine) not bad...
This is a good solid basic VCR.The main complaint on here seems to be the "brakes".That when you press "stop", it stops a few seconds after you press.I was worried about this, but mine seems to be good.At most there is a 1 full second delay, which to me is normal.A fresh set of good alkaline batteries in the remote prolly also helps.Anyways, I'd highly reccomend it, but seems to be hit or miss with the brake problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars good system
An excellent, for the price, system for those who just want a safety backup to be able to play their old VHS tapes years from now.But limited in and out options, so not easily integrated into systems as a component.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just The Basics
I concur with R. Cheney: the transport mechanism is rather basic.Fast Forward or Reverse don't stop on a dime. And you have only one choice for slow motion that I could find.Nor does there seem to be any tracking adjustment for slow speed or paused images, which yields snow and noise. So not near as user friendly and robust as older machines in my collection, but it does the basic job of playing a video. At normal speed the playback quality is fine.Just don't expect anything fancy like machines of, oh, 5 years ago. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Works exactly as advertised.
Wow, I searched alot and read alot of reviews of unhappy owners of other equipment and I chose this one for converting edited home VHS to DVD. My reasoning was that panasonic has alot of experience in both VCR and DVD, their systems sometimes lack extras like zoom but they tend to last a long time and are well built. I liked the extra large fan and cabinet height as compared to the LG 299 and I did not feel LG had to much experience with vcr. I have not tried out all the features yet but right now I am very happy, also I recommend buying the extended replacement warranty on any equipment of this type, there are alot of horror stories out there. I have some gaps between my clips and I was worried the system might stop recording on these but no problem, thanks panasonic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Potentially a very good machine, but mine arrived broken.
Pro's: Recording controls are intuitive; Quality of DVD recording is very good;Quality of VHS recording is very good.
5-0 out of 5 stars NeedHD-upcoding and a VHS? This DVD recorder is the one !
This is the latest generation (in summer of '06 anyway) of the new DVD recorders / players that upcode to attain near HD quality.(You will need a HD TV for that). It also has a VCR/VHS built in. If you need all that, you can't do better for the price. If you don't expect to connect to an HD TV (now or in the next year) go for a simpler model (eg., a progressive player w/o upcoding or a product w/o the VCR).

5-0 out of 5 stars Single Cable HDMI and other Incredible Features
This unit has a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) that allows the user to interface with a video monitor or TV with an HDMI input. HDMI uses a single cable to transfer an uncompressed pure digital A/V signal. This unit also supports Component, Composite, S-Video and RF interfaces which makes it virtually compatible with any TV. This is incredible. It also plays standard DVDs, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW, Audio CDs, VCD/SVCD, CD-R/RW discs with MP3 music or JPEG picture files. The VCR side features time recording in SP or EP speeds. It also plays back tapes recorded in SP, LP and EP speeds and will also play back S-VHS tapes in quasi S-VHS mode. This unit utilizes four 19-micron video heads which optimize EP recording. It also has a very fast flash rewind. The DVD side does not have picture zoom but that is of little consequence because this player is designed for use with HD monitors. This is one of the best DVD-VHS Combination Units I have ever seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice alternative
I couldn't afford the DSM-520 from DLink, and my family still used VHS (very retro). I saw this, and the DivX label caught my eye. So I bought it. Then I looked at the reviews, which were scant and negative. I decided to open the box and set it up so I could add a review for others.
1-0 out of 5 stars If you plan to use this for more than 6 months, don't buy
I bought two of these units, exactly one week apart.I liked the first one so much, I bought a second one for the family room.6 months later, almost to the day, the DVD drive on the first unit stopped working (I had to take the thing apart to extract the trapped DVD).One week later, on the second unit, the VHS tray began seeing a tape even though none was loaded which meant I couldn't load a real tape. So, 6 months after buying two combo units, I now have one DVD player and one VCR. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Quality and Cost Effective S-VHS Recorder from JVC
JVC has always manufactured the best S-VHS recorders. You get 400 lines of resolution when you record on S-VHS tape in the SP mode. This 19-micron, 4-head recording unit records S-VHS tapes in the EP mode with impressive results as well. This is a truly exceptional unit for price. If you record off cable TV the playback picture quality looks outstanding. I can't say enough about this S-VHS recorder.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overhyped
I have four VCR's in the house recording various programs that I watch later, which allows me to fast forward through commercials saving an average of 10-15 minutes of viewing per hour.I bought two of the JVC HR-S2902U based on a couple of positive reviews, which I now find was a mistake. First of all the "manual"(a big 28 x 20 inch sheet of paper folded in eighths) leaves a lot to be desired. It has no index and it is not easy to find a specific topic. There is no Troubleshooting section.Usually I can program and run a VCR without a manual because I have been doing this for a long time, but not this one.The programing is very unorthodox and not as easy as other VCR's.The remote is too smalland the buttons are not organized for efficiency as well as hard to handle because of the size.As with some other VCR's to select a station to program you have to "cycle" through the Channels rather than press, for instance, two keys to get say from Ch 3 to Ch 60.You can enter the channel on the set first to eliminate this headache, but it's just another step that should be unnecessary.I am not wild about the recording's either.I feel they are pasty looking, but I can live with that. There are other annoyances too numerous to mention that require detailed explanation, so I will just sayI will be going back to Panasonic and I won't be ordering another JVC VCR right away.

2-0 out of 5 stars not a quality product
I have not been happy with this product. It works sometimes, and sometimes it just freezes up.I have tounplug it to get it going again. Also, vhs tapes get stuck inside, and are difficult to get out. Also, after recording a dvd, you have to finalize it to be able to use it on other brands of dvds.Well, often it will just quit with an error condition in the middle of trying to finalize a dvd. When that happens, you probably just lost everything you had recorded.

    4-0 out of 5 stars OK.............For a VCR
Obviously, VCR's are becoming a thing of the past. The problem is what do we do with all those old tapes we still like to watch?I bought this primarily for its tv tuner. Asthetically, the case is plastic and it does not look like the sturdiest piece of gear. However, its mechanics fuction well and I have had no problems with recording or loss of tapes due to the machine eating them. The interface is not bad, but it leaves a bit to be desired.First, there is no tv/vcr switch on the front of the unit.I use it as my tuner, and it does not remember that it is set to vcr mode when it is turned on and off. I have to press the switch on the remote every time I watch TV. Next, it will not change channels unless I press the enter key. This is sometimes confusing because it is not clear if the machine received the right input from the remote. My old vcr switched channels as soon as the second digit was pressed. Finally, when using the channel up and down keys, the blue screen appears briefly. This is a small issue, but can be bothersome if you channel surf like I do.
1-0 out of 5 stars Thrown away!

    1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy Sony SLV-N900
I've had numerous VCRs in my life. Some were good and some were better. This is the worst one. The problem is the self lock mechanism which renders the VCR virtually dead (no power and no possibility to turn it on). There is a way to bypass this problem (which first occurred when we just bought the machine) and were let in on the "secret" by customer support. However, less then ten months after I bought the Sony SLV-N900, the same thing happened, only this time I was not able to unlock it. I was told by customer service that I need to send it to them, and they will repair it for $63.13 because the warranty covers the parts, but not the work!!! - BEWARE ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than competition...
This combo unit has a good DVD player/recorder and a good quality VCR.It is only 2-head but the quality is good -- much better than Samsung's 4-head VCR.If you want to transfer VHS to DVD and want a combo unit to do this, then this is probably your best bet (or the 45VS if you want upconversion to HD).
5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I wanted
I love this combo. I have had it for two months and it has worked wonderfully. Transfers are easily achieved. The DVD recorder also accepts all DVD recordable media including DVD-Ram. Playback quality is very nice. Scheduled recording is simple with an intuitive on-screen interface. The DVD player is a little loud during recording but I have gotten used to that. I have found this to be the best DVD/VCR recorder I could buy at this price range. Very satisfied.

2-0 out of 5 stars Jittery still images
I bought this item in May.First exchanged it and then returned it.My problem was jittery (shaky) images while watching a still picture and some animated movies (like South Park). The other problem mentioned in the other reviews about remote control is fixed now.You need to download the patch by use of a computer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow remote performance
My mother and I both bought this product and have both been less than satisfied (forunately mine got blown up by lightening today and I have a chance to replace it). The remote is very slow in responding to commands. Trying to watch a recorded television show and fast forward through commercials is frustrating. When you push the button to stop fast forward and resume the show, it takes the processor so long to follow through, you are well into the scene of the show. Try to re-wind to catch the first couple of sentences again and you're back into the commercial so far, you should have just watched that ad and not missed the show intro.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money....
Like others here I fell for the Sony name brand. What a mistake!! The DVD player freezes constantly and often gives "disk error" messages. I checked the same DVD's on other players I have and they worked fine in OTHER players. I will never buy a Sony product again unless its reviews are 100 per cent positive. I have a no name player from "Cyber Home" which we won in a contest. It performs flawlessly. SONY BUYERS BEWARE!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Player
We just purchased a new sony DVD/VCR Combo to replace our old Sonic Blue model which sereved us pretty well for for about five years. There was nothing wrong with it, but it lacked some of the more modern features sutch as starting from the same place when you stop. I was impressed by the size, it fit our small cabinet nicely. The remote works for our Sony TV too which was cool so we don't have to juggle remotes. as far as the VCR is concerned the play quality is very good, but when fast forwarding or rewinding the response time is very slow and I often go past whatever it is I'm aiming for. The DVD player is the sameway, excellent play quality but using the remote takes way too long. Also the door on the DVD player takes forever to open. I have NEVER noticed ANY damage of any kind to any of my tapes or DVDs so just for that factor I would probably get another one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional S-VHS Recorder
JVC has always manufactured the best S-VHS recorders. You get 400 lines of resolution when you record on S-VHS tape in the SP mode. This unit does have S-VHS ET capability but I still prefer to record on S-VHS tapes for best results. This is an exceptional unit. If you record off cable or Satellite TV the playback picture quality looks outstanding. For the price you get a lot of good features. Years ago these were very expensive units. I can't say enough about this S-VHS recorder.

1-0 out of 5 stars JVC not user friendly
I wanted to replace an older VCR and so I bought this JVC HRS5902U based on some glowing reviews and rather impressive technical features.Needless to say words are cheap;experience is the best teacher. This is the most user unfriendly device I have ever encountered.I have to keep the manual on hand just to work through every major and minor quirk it throws at me.It seems to arbitraily decide what it is going to do when.It is frustrating to program because the program buttons jump rapidly in 30 minute intervals or they do not work at all.Itdoes not have a visible tape counter;it always resets to SP after you turn it off so you always run out of tape;if set to time record you cannot stop it in midprogram. You have to unplug it.When you plug it in the auto channel programmermisses at least one channel. And for whatever reason it will start blinking odd little symbols meaning something or other but you cannot tell because you have to read throughthe whole manual again. The tape marking is a farce.I can just tell that the designers of this machine were looking more to impress their fellow engineers with their cleverness than they were trying to simplify life for the customer.Watch for it on Ebay.

4-0 out of 5 stars JVC NEVER DSAPPOINTS
I have been a loyal JVC customer for the past twenty years and have never been disappointed by their products. This versatile VCR is no exception. With its multi head recording and playback ability plus its user friendly remote and operations, the JVC is a welcome addition to my home theater system. For those who are looking for longevity, simplicity and solid quality, I would recommend this component. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars for the love of god, don't buy it!
after 2 weeks, vhs tapes were being eaten, then refused to cough them up - and other maladies that i don't have time to go into.

1-0 out of 5 stars I am on my third because they keep breaking
I was expecting a quality Sony product when I bought this.I have another sony DVD player that I have been using for about 3 years without any problems. This unit is another story.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sony SLV D56O
I have 2 of these and am thinking about a third, but I really want to get a DVD recorder/VCR unit that has the one feature of this that I really love. And that is the "Dail Timer" on the front of the machine. We aren't really into technology so I don't really know if the video/dvd quality is any good, and I rarely use the DVD player, although I don't recall having any problems when I did, but I record ALOT of shows and the dial timer lets me set the unit to record without ever having to turn the TV and recorder on.It's really neat and I use it tons. The SONY DVD/VCR recorder unit doesn't have this feature which is why I may get another one of these.I put a splitter where my cable connection comes into a room and don't even have these units hooked up to a TV...although I do have to hook it up to a TV if I goof up the programming and need to use the screen to delete or change the recording info. The remote is pretty lousy but then I never really use that either...just the dial timer...and that works great. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent unit and features at bargain price
While I wanted a combo unit that included a good DVD player with HDMI (in anticipation of a LCD HDTV I plan to acquire eventually), I was even more interested in the performance and features of the VCR. I've been programming VCRs ever since they first came out, and have had two installed simultaneously on my TV for years now because there are often two different programs I want to record at the same time. After extensive research on a lot of combos, I picked this unit for features, quality of pictures, and price. I've had this for a couple months now and it's been flawless. Great picture even on long-play VCR recording (which is all I ever use in that mode).
1-0 out of 5 stars VCR does not work
We were hopeful, but twice failed by Toshiba (once one the V592 and once on the "replacement" V594 The VCR would not display, regardles of output chosen. Customer service was unable to assist or trouble shoot. I have given up and ordered something else.

2-0 out of 5 stars DVD Player stopped reading DVDs after 1 week
After doing lots of research online about DVD/VHS players, I chose the Toshiba because it offered the best features for the price, and generally had better reviews than other products out there. After receiving the new machine, things worked fine for about a week, after which the DVD player would no longer read DVDs. After inserting a DVD it gave a "reading" message for a long time before finally saying "error". Oddly enough, the machine would read CDs just fine! I called Toshiba about the problem, but they couldn't help. Resetting the machine by unplugging it for 5 minutes availed nothing. Finally, I just decided to return it. I'm going to buy the Sony SLV-D570H to replace it. Both have HDMI outputs (DVD only), but hopefully the Sony machine won't break down on me after one week.

3-0 out of 5 stars Less than expected from Samsung
The display does not show seconds of a tape/disk position, the remote control is not well design and looks and feels cheaply including small and not well located buttons, and the quality of workmanship leaves to wish. But, the 4 Head Hi-Fi VCR plays back and records on VHS tapes very well, and the DVD player plays superbly DVD discs including DVD-R, DVD+R, as well as VCD and SVCD discs all burned on both typical computer Toshiba and LG writers using generic, Maxell,... blanks under Nero, DVD Decrypter, 1 Click DVD Copy, Power Producer, unless rarely an *.IFO file is messed up. The quality of Dolby Surround compatible sound and picture with the added visual clarity of Progressive scan is excellent in any of the formats: MP3, JPEG, WMA playback, DivX. The available Coaxial, Composite video, S-video connection options are typical. Layout of keys and buttons is well designed, and their size is appropriate - simple and clear. There is a 7-event/1-month recording timer, and also one-touch recording to activate 30-minutes of recording time per button push on the remote control.

1-0 out of 5 stars Skips and Freezes
This player will not play my Sony brand DVD-R's.It loads and tries to play but skips a lot.I did get a Memorex DVD+R to play.Samsung's tech support told me when it comes to playing burned DVD's it all depends on "What program you use to burn disks, the brand of disk and what format you are using."Wow...I just want to put a disk in and have it play.I have a $25 cheapo that plays all formats. For $100 you can do better than this unit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't Play Most Burned Discs
Main reason I bought this:divx and xvid playback. This player cannot play most burned discs, and even the ones that it will load, it won't play all the files.I tried DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.I tried multiple brands of each. The only brand it would play were some cheapy DVD+R's.It would list all 12 files on the disc. Each file was the same...652x324 DiVx, pretty much the same size, but this player would only play the first FOUR files...it choked on anything else.I would not recommend this if you're going to be using a lot of burned media. ...
