3-0 out of 5 stars Follow up review after 1 year
Everything I wrote about this unit one year ago is true, just that they are not built to last. I used them every other weekend while I was riding my ATV. OK lots of shaking and dust but still I had expected them to last a bit longer. First the clip, than the speaker button - both of them fell literally apart. 5-0 out of 5 stars Secret little walkie talkie with great performance!
Yes this is a basic radio but it has a 2 watt output and the best penatration for difficult city buildings. I use this radio at work and find it works in NYC's buildings better than an motorola, audiovox that I have tried. The radio has all the features you are looking for and the only negative is that it goes through batteries on the 2 watt mode. (I use Nickle Metal Hydride)

5-0 out of 5 stars These are good
Inever thought Cobra would make a decent radio but they have with this one.A big advantage over Motorola is the superior voice clarity!A host of other goodies such as a compass and weather radio are useful extras. The selectable power settings on GMRS is good. The range is good, I don't think any of these radios give you 5 miles and the best radio in terms of range and clarity were the original Motorolas FRS Talkabouts of the late 90's.Unfortunately, they ate batteries.I recommend this model of Cobra.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have had FRS since the start
I started back when there was only one channel in FRS.I bought two radios from Radio Shack, they were the best of the whole bunch, but the dog chewed off the antennas one day.Ever since then I have not found a decent replacement.I bought other radios but had issues with them all.The good thing about these 6400's over other radios I have owned:3-0 out of 5 stars nice features, mediocre sound
These radios have some great features like the automatic shut-off, but ultimately the sound quality is not that much better than the lower-end Motorola models. The voice scrambler is useless, it ends up making your voice sound like a robot.3-0 out of 5 stars Not better than Midland G11C2
I bought one pair from BestBuy last month and tested them while taking a trip in Maine. FRS chanels works OK (good sound quality) but only gave me 1.5 mile in seashore area! GMRS channels disappointed me by merely 2.5 miles on open highway and 2.0 mile in the woods. But my friends were quite impressed by the looks and features. I accdently drop one to the rock from 6 feet height and you know what?-- not even a den--I considered myself lucky. In short, it looks better than it 'souds'...Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Compact but No Range & Noisy
I liked these cause they are compact and easy to carry around. But the small size did not outweight the bad range. I had a Motorola 8 mile radio and the range was decent.Of course no where near the stated 8 miles, as none of these radios ever can acheive the stated range, but at least they were useful enough in a reasonable setting. These lost range after a city block once you turn the corner.I think the strategy with 2-way radios is to buy the highest range, like 10 miles, and hope to acheive 1/10 of the claim.

Boasting an ultra-clear long-distance range of up to 10 miles (depending on terrain and conditions), this pair of Cobra PR 3500-2 DX two-way radios is ideal for adventurous hikers, rescue workers, or even parents who need to keep tabs on their kids from several blocks away. 5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, Dependable Set of Radios
A very good radio. 4+ miles range in a suburban Denver, Colorado neighborhood setting. Ran out of road, but at 4 miles as the crow flies, communication was clear and no static. Could have gone much further. Very solidly built. Easy to use. Very good audio. Very long life battery pack. I recommend these highly for sportsmen needing to keep in touch with each other.

1-0 out of 5 stars 2 radios make one
I've used Motorola FRS Radios in the past but got a good buy on these Cobras and they are supposed to have better range. Used them on three occasions with minimal actual use. Took them out this season and found that one receives but doesn't send, the other sends but doesn't receive. Of course they are out of warranty. Two out of two defective radios does not inspire me to try the brand again.

2-0 out of 5 stars I returned this item

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal Use
I have used a pair for about 2 yrs. Outstanding units. Problem have you ever used a cell phone in a crowded environment? i.e. Ballpark? Amusement Park? The Fair? etc.. Not a very good choice, very hard to hear your party on the other end. But not with these. For the Small size, but mil-spec rugged, these have the best audio. 500mw more than ample. Their loud and beefy. They just sound cool. I used them at the local Fair and talked to a family member at home 15 miles away, repeater assisted. I use simplex and repeater frequencies. 5-0 out of 5 stars Was left out in the yard for 3 months and still works!
I usually don't rave about a product, but this was too good to be true. I bought 4 of these radios for Christmas. Sometime in Jan. one of my sons lost his radio out in the woods by our house. Today my wife found it while she was out for a run. I pushed the power button and it worked like new. Unbelievable! I'm sure this is not the kind of "field testing" that they had in mind at Panasonic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids
I bought these for grandson's birthday (7th).He loved them. All the kids at the party loved them.Big hit.Seemed to work fine for short distance.Didn't have an opportunity to test the 8 mile radius, but for the price I think quite a good deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and cheap Walkie - Talkie
I bought this for a hiking trip planned next month, but got a chance to use it during a unplanned hike last weekend. It was very helpful since we were travelling in two cars and there was no mobile coverage. It worked well most of the time during the hike, where the handsets were at different elevations. But there was some disturbances or no coverage during the car, mainly when there was a mountain in between the cars (and thats why 4 stars). I am not sure if other models with higher range will work across mountains though.
5-0 out of 5 stars great price
these are good walkie talkies for their price. I use them when i go on ski trips or to an amusement park and they work great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for group hikes and road trips
I just got back from a two-week geology field study trip through the Rocky Mountains with 24 other people. The group was in three vans going through mostly rural areas (i.e., no mobile phone service), so naturally radio communication between the vans was essential. The Cobras were great! Because of the power-saving mode, the batteries lasted the entire trip, even though the radios were powered on for several (often many) hours each day. Also, the radios were very useful when the group split up while hiking: half the group could climb Wheeler Peak in Nevada, while the other half hiked to a glacier 2000 feet below the peak, and everyone could hike at their own pace, while we all stayed in contact with one another. (We were using a GMRS frequency; I can't speak to whether an FRS frequency would have worked as well.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
These things are awesome.Me and my friend wanted communication to his house because his dad didn't like him on the phone. So we bought these talkies and we have crystal clear communication 1 1/2 miles away.Buythese then are awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great value for keeping you and yours together.
I bought these radios, because of the first factor I had: They were inexpensive. I wasn't expecting much for the money I invested, but I was most definately surprised at the quality and value I recieved. I took themto "A popular resort park in Orlando" and experienced my firstproblem: FRS is a heavily shared frequency, and it was very hard tocommunicate with my party. I did have fun talking to other guests, though. My next trip was to the mountains. Here, they proved invaluable. Noone elsewas apparently using FRS in the area when we were there, and it wasexcellent for confirming rendezvous times and places. The range is superb.Somewhat surprising. My voice, and the person I am talking to can easily beheard sometimes up to a mile away over hill, dale, and wadi. The featuresare easy to use. My 5 year old has no problem using it (no, he dosen't goout alone). The page feature is good to have, as well. The size of the unitmakes it easy to slip into purse or pocket, or attach to a belt with theclip. It is a breeze to use, and great fun to have. I will never regretbuying mine, and I don't think you will either.
