Editorial Review

CBs are practical safety and information devices, but their bulk usually relegates them to being installed in pickups and other large vehicles. With Midland's 77-104XL, all of your excuses for adding a CB to your vehicle evaporate. Although it comes with a convenient full-size microphone, a standard jack for an external antenna, and other features found on larger units, this CB radio measures less than 5 inches wide, 6.5 inches deep, and 1.5 inches thick. That's small enough to find a home in almost any vehicle.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars INSTALLATION TO POWER SOURCE
THIS PRODUCT IS GREAT I'M SURE BUT FOR ONE CATCH...YOU HAVE TO HARD WIRE THE CB RADIO TO THE AUTO'S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM YOURSELF. PERHAPS NOT A PROBLEM FOR SOME BUT FOR OTHERS (MYSELF INCLUDED)IT IS I AM SURE. IT IS MY FAULT THAT I DID NOT NOTICE THIS IN THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION PRIOR TO ODERING. I JUST WANTED A CB RADIO THAT I COULD PLUG INTO THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER AND GO. THIS IS NOT THAT TYPE OF CB UNIT. FOR THIS REASON ALONE I RETURNED THE UNIT TO AMAZON.COM SO NOT TAKING ANYTHING AWAY FROM THE CB ITSELF ....JUST BE AWARE THAT ONE HAS TO WIRE THE UNIT TO THE AUTO AND NOT JUST PLUG INTO A LIGHTER....

1-0 out of 5 stars Really disappointing.
I had two of these units from Amazon with the same identical problem. The channel selector turned and clicked but did not change the channel. I also own the Midland 77-092, which is actually a cheaper model, but I've not had any problems with it, and am completely satisfied. You may want to consider that model from Amazon instead of the 77-104XL.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm pleased
The CB is just what i expected. It's not very clear in the description but it DOES have a PA switch and output. The best part is, I got it in three days!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
love the item but wish they had the same thing with more range.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short Range Connectivity
Nice little radio some of the bottons are way too busy, like function keys on a calculator but hey thats miniturization for you. Make smaller things do more with less. Other than that very good for short distance communication such as between motorcycles on organized runs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for every motorcyclist...
I purchased two of these to use as motorcycle intercoms.I figured that at $15.00 each I couldn't make too much of a mistake.Well, as far as motorcycle intercoms go, it was a BIG mistake! The headsets, even though they fit behind the head, were impossible to use under my motorcycle helmet.Granted, these might work well with a helmet that does not cover the ears, but with the full-face helmet that I use there was no way to make them work.Just too thick to fit between my ear and the helmet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Midland leaves 74250C customers holding the bag
Fully charged rechargable batteries last two days in "alert mode" and new alkaline batteries lasts about six days.Without a radio battery charger, a 74250C is high maintenance with high battery costs. If your families safety is important, the radio should always be in "alert mode" 24/7.Midland lets their 74250C customers down because they should provide a charger with the radio and Midland doesn't offer any for sale.Midland tech advised me to get a 6-volt 100mAh charger. The smallest charger Radio Shack offers is 300mAh which will heat up your unit.Luckily I had an old charger and after changing the plug to a "B", our unit is functioning as it should, not heating up, and should serve our safety needs at home and in our motorhome traveling to different parts of the country as well as unplugging the unit and taking it on day trips in our toad or on hikes.Programing to a specific NOAA is difficult and takes a long process to master the complexities of this radio.Midland seems to have built a good radio otherwise and hoping it will continue working for long service which is in question according to other reviews.Currently it is the best radio on the market to fulfill our desired portable applications and this is because we have a charger for our rechargable batteries in the unit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
I got this radio less than a year ago, and I'm replacing it because I can't keep the batteries charged. The thing is ALWAYS hot, and after the first 6 months of having it, it won't pick up our NOAA stations and give us alerts anymore. And, the range on it is pitiful.I live on a farm at least 7 miles away from any tornado sirens, so it's VERY important that my family is protected from bad weather.I don't feel safe with this product in my home.I bought it because I thought it would be great to have a portable that can go to the basement with us, but the batteries kept dying.Take my word for it, FIND A BETTER PRODUCT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent unit
First of all, sorry for my english.5-0 out of 5 stars Great radio
This radio is ideal for the money. I tested these radio's in the city and got almost 4 miles in range. I had one outside and my friend had the other one in his truck driving away from me. We were able to keep constant communication the whole time. He was driving through busines and residential areas. These will be great from car to car and out in the mountains.

4-0 out of 5 stars Uniden GMRS480 is a 2 watt unit
I bought 2 of these radios a few days ago. I am not sure how the idea got around that this is a 1/2 watt unit, because it is a 2 watt unit, and it DOES require an FCC license. The manual and the FCC registration says it is a 2 watt unit. I was very skeptical of this radio, because it seemed like I was getting alot of radio for less money, but I am glad I bought it now. We are getting around 1.5 mile range in the neighborhood, and about 2.5 miles out in the country were there are less obstructions. My father has 2 motorolas (5100 model). We tested these units against the Unidens head to head. The Uniden GMRS480 sounded much better than the Motorola 5100s every time. The secret is to not hold you mouth too close to the radio when you speak. No need to speak loud either. The Uniden's were not "tiny micy" sounding at all. I would have given this unit a rating of "5", but I must tell you that the thermometer is not very useful. I believe that it cannot get a correct temperature reading when you are holding the radio. It can be around 40 degrees outside, and if you are holding the radio, it will read in the upper 70's. I guess if you sit the radio down and don't touch it, it may get a "true" temperature reading. The SCAN function works, but is kinda weird in my opinion. You have to hold down either of the up/down channels for several seconds to get it to scan. Therefore, you actually change channels 1 thru 15 many times, and then the unit goes in to scan mode. Also, you can't use the radio while it is on the charger, which really disappoints me. But the batteries (NiMH), lasted us on the farm on one charge, Sat, Sun, & Monday, with the unit turned on all during the daylight hours. By Monday evening they still had 2 out of 4 bars left on the battery meter. The weather band is good, it picked up the NOAA channel about 50 miles away. Seems pretty weather resistant, but I try not to get anything wet that is electronic. Good thing that the radio is simple to figure out and use, because I could have written a better manual. You can download the manual from the Uniden web site before you buy it. It is only a few pages. The folks at Uniden have been very helpful in answering my questions. They have responded to every email I have sent them. I recommend the Uniden GMRS480, but since it is GMRS and 2 watt, it does require an FCC license. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Underpowered, lousy
We received a pair of the T5820s as a gift. Thought these would be an upgrade to our old FRS radio. It was a downgrade! The 5-mile rating is a joke. The old FRS radios way out-perform the 5820s, and are more compatible with other radios. 3-0 out of 5 stars Better options out there
My fiance and I play a lot of airsoft (kinda like paintball) and we use radios like this a lot.I have to say, I am not very fond of our Motorola radios! We constantly had issues with sound quality, even within short distances.Half the radios we bought ended up broken after only a few uses!1-0 out of 5 stars A piece of Junk from Motorola
I used 5320, 5420 2 miles range walkie talkie before, I have to say they are much better than this 5 mile range 5820. 5820 does not even go beyond one mile and voice are twisted. very dissapointed at this unit, do yourself a favor, if you need 5 miles range buy a 5720 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice All-Around CB Radio
This is a really nice CB radio. I love the Dynamic Squelch Control, the RF Gain control and the Mic Gain control. I had enough room to install this under the dash in a new 2006 Chevy Impala. I run this CB with a K30 antenna. That antenna is OK, but I would recommend a bigger antenna such as the Wilson 500 or 1000. The lighted display looks nice at night and I also like the weather channels.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Radio

Stay connected with your buddies while hiking on the trail, riding the ski lift, or exploring other locations within a 2-mile window with this pair of GMRS520 two-way radios. 4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and OK, eats batteries quick
I use this where I work, and it's range is good. But if I use it for 3 days, the batteries are dead. Definitely worth it for occasional use, but not daily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Convenient. Period.
First, these radios don't have a great range (we get about 1/2 mile or so in our neighborhood). They use little AAA batteries. They don't have privacy codes, etc. But, I rarely have one away from my side. 5-0 out of 5 stars Feature richand resonably priced
The unit uses AA batteries so they are cheaper and longer lasting than AAA. It has a battery strength indicator.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Walkies!
These walkies are great!Have not had any problems. These things work for the full 10-miles and more, if the wind conditions are right. If you are looking for a reliable set of walkies, these are the ones for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars FCC license required!!!!
We got these for Christmas, and are very pleased with them. We haven't tested out the range yet, but were counting on a slightly wider range than the 6-mile ones (which reviewers found to have a 1-mile range).
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
I think with ALL these 2 mile + walkie-talkie brands, the ONLY reason they DO NOT REACH their SAID RANGE is because the USERS don't GET THEIR FCC LISCENSES! THE RANGE ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE AN FCC LISCENSE! IF YOU AREN'T WILLING TO GET THE LISCENSE, DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE WALKIE-TALKIE RANGE. ... Read more

Everything I wrote about this unit one year ago is true, just that they are not built to last. I used them every other weekend while I was riding my ATV. OK lots of shaking and dust but still I had expected them to last a bit longer. First the clip, than the speaker button - both of them fell literally apart. 5-0 out of 5 stars Secret little walkie talkie with great performance!
Yes this is a basic radio but it has a 2 watt output and the best penatration for difficult city buildings. I use this radio at work and find it works in NYC's buildings better than an motorola, audiovox that I have tried. The radio has all the features you are looking for and the only negative is that it goes through batteries on the 2 watt mode. (I use Nickle Metal Hydride)
