Editorial Review

Stay connected with your buddies while on the trail, at the river, or anywhere else within a 10-mile range with this pair of GMR1088-2CK two-way radios. Also ideal as neighborhood watch tools and kid-sitting aids, each water-resistant radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 99 CTCSS/DSC privacy codes, along with a voice-operated transmitter that enables hands-free communication when used with an optional HS 2467 headset and microphone. The large number of channels and privacy codes give users several communication options, ensuring that they can almost always talk with friends or family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. The channels are easy to find thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses for active channels while you watch, and the channel monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given channel. To transmit on a GMRS or FRS channel, a user merely presses the PTT or power-boost button while the scan is paused. The power-boost button expands the radio's range by emitting maximum power when a GMRS channel is detected. The radios are also equipped with a NOAA National Weather Service receiver. In weather-alert mode, the system functions as it does in GRMS mode, but also monitors the selected weather channel for storm updates and other information. When using the weather function, users can't receive GMRS communications, however. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Pair of Radios
I've had these and used them lightly so far. I like the feel and performance of them, and have used the weather/alert function a number of times -- it's a nice feature. Battery use seems to be pretty good, as they just always seem to be ready, even after a day's use of sporadic communication (for example, at an amusement park).
2-0 out of 5 stars Less range than old FRS radio!
These are nice looking, but aren't very good at range. The stated 10 mile range must be in outer space as it's certainly not on earth.Range is less than 1 mile with the full boost on. My old Audiovox FRS radios went at least a half mile farther than these!
5-0 out of 5 stars Water resistant means splash or light rain not submerged!!!
I is one of the best radio I have ever used!very long range and the power consumption is top notch!very durable because I have dropped mine four times on concrete from the chest without a dent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the toys!!!!!!!!!
Hi! I'm the 37 year old again. Back to the story. Rachel, my daughter, and I went on the internet again with her lemonade money. Well, Rachel's the Computer Wizard and went on the computer herself. She yelled "Mommie! I found a good pair of walkie-talkies! Pretty Colors too!" I ran in and I thought they were junk like the "Elite Operations Officer Walkie- Talkie". I'm a sucker for the puppy dog face. Well, it turns out Rachel knew it. You know what happened next. We got the walkie-talkies and Rachel gave one to her friend Sulema and I was amazed at how well they worked. No statick. And whoever got on thier chanell, the two girls could go on an other one. Perfect and worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars What it is (a good radio) and what it is not (a magic wand).
This product works very well if used in the manner in which it was designed.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not as powerful as older FRS models!
Having been a fan of Motorola FRS walkie-Talkies for years, I was looking forward to the extra power of the GMRS models. The Motorola T5720 was a major disapointment!I made a few range tests and found that the T5720 was not nearly as effective as my old Motorola T289 FRS radio - much less range, more noise, poor audio quality.Don't buy this product! ... The CB radio has been around since the 1930s. To see that the Citizens Band is stillbeing produced and sold is testament to its reliability and usefulness. Cobra has brought backtheir version of the CB with this 29-LTD. They've made some nice improvements to the CB youmight have used a decade or two ago. Key improvements to this radio include a front panelmicrophone connector which makes in-dash installation a cinch. Cobra has also provided a ninefoot microphone cord so that you keep in touch from a good distance, whether you're located ina truck cab or dispatch office. The final noteworthy improvement are tactile controls for safer, and more accurate, functionality. Other features include: antenna warning indicator, SWRcalibration, instant Channel 9, PA capability, dimmer control, switchable noise blanker and RFgain. In a time of seemingly un-ending technological advances, it's nice to see something wecreated back in the late 1930s is still alive and kicking. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best AM CB out there!
There are a lot of CB radios out there and the Cobra 29 LTD Classic has stood the test of time.It comes with the traditional chrome detailed brushed aluminum faceplate that really shows off this radio. But the true quality is in the radio itself.I have owned plenty of CBs in the past 30 years including some top-end AM/sideband CBs as well as a few export radios, and as far as a straight AM 40 channel CBs, this is one that really shines above the others. The most impressive features in this radio are its sensitivity in receiving, even while the Noise-Blanker and/or Automatic Noise Limmiter circuits are engaged. And these circuits actually eliminate static and engine-generated noise...unlike some other radios.Overall, the 29LTD Classic is perhaps the best inexpensive AM CB out there! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Radio is unbelievable!!!!
I had bought this radio at a Radio Shack store in town when we went to visit my dad in Indiana last Christmas. I had only bought it because my old Radio Shack cb I have had for about 8 1/2 years had died on me on the way there. I Bought the 520Xl and hooked it up to my SWR meter with my 3 ft Firestik antenna with magnet mount I had on the back, and right off, i never had to make an adjustment at all, because I had a SWR reading between 1:0 and 1:5. I used this radio on the way back, and was able to reach people up to 5 miles away, which was great! unfortunatly on the way back, I had to take my antenna off because everytime a semi passed us on the road, it would blow my antenna off the truck. When I got home, I took my CB to a cb shop near by and had it peaked and tuned, so now it gets 14 watts out instead of 7, and I can talk over 15-20 miles on a clear day. I did however switch antennas to a K40 3 ft antenna with adjustable sleeve that I had for years, and it works about the same.Get the radio, get you a good quality antenna like Firestik, K40, Wilson, or another good name brand. If you know somebody who can do it, get it peaked and tune,or take it to a cb shop and have them do it, and you will get somebody surely everytime you talk. Well worth the money, sorry about rambling on, but I felt if I shared experiences, it would help.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good, compact CB.
This CB is a very good buy. For the quality of it, the price is the best I've seen. I used it with the Cobra A1500 antenna. I found about 5 miles. Also, it is compact and fit in the console. The only problem was getting use to the squelch and RF Gain. This is my first CB and I am very happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compact CB
This CB radio is excellent for small spaces. It does not have all the "gadget" features some other radios have but they aren't necesary anyway. The output is comparable also.I installed it in a Jeep Wrangler. Now that it is in, I couldn't picture using any other radio.Perfect for Jeep people!!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic CB radio
This is a pretty good CB for a basic rig in it's price class. If all you are looking for is a no-frills CB for the car to keep in touch with others or get road information while traveling, the Pro 510XL is a nice rig.I have a cigarette lighter plug on my Pro 510 so I can easily put it in the car whenever I go on a trip. The audio from the speaker is pretty clean, and I have found that the range on the CB is pretty good for it's size.It helps to have a good antenna, such as a Wilson 1000 or something similar. One thing I don't like about the radio is that the microphone is pretty cheap.Uniden chose to use an electret microphone element in the mic for the Pro 510 and Pro 520 radios. The mic element draws about 3 Volts of power from the radio itself to power the mic element. This makes it virtually impossible to use any other mic other than the one that comes with the radio.I have been told that you have to use some sort of amplified mic, like one of the Astatic series hand mics on the Pro 510 if you want to go with a better quality mic for the radio. If you try to use a regular dynamic mic like most CB's use, the transmit audio just won't sound very good. The mic that Uniden supplies with the radio is adequate, I wouldn't say it is excellent.All-in-all, I think the Pro 510XL is a good basic CB.Uniden backs the rig with a 2-year warranty.Give this radio a look if all you are looking for is a simple CB for traveling and keeping in touch with others on the road.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter or Back-Up !!!
I am partial to Uniden anyway, however this CB is great for a first time user or as a back up to a more expensive unit.I have been using CB for about 10 years and I always make sure I have a Uniden 510 available for a back up, or use it in a second car.It has superior range when used with a good antenna and the received audio is decent. I would suggest using an external speaker unless you have a super quiet vehicle. The anl switch cuts through static really well to improve reception, although it sometimes dulls out the audio of the person you are trying to hear. You can use it with a cigarette lighter plug with an adapter from radio shack for a few dollars. They will even show you how to hook it up.It all boils down to being a great CB at a great price.Remember a simple rule of thumb... An inexpensive CB on a good antenna will perform just as well as a high-end CB on a cheap antenna.Don't forget to tune your antenna and have fun! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars GMR1558-2ck range
I understand that the 15-mile range is based on GMRS and ideal conditions, but I have not been able to get more than 1 mile apart with reasonable communications.I did get just over a mile but the call function didn't work and the conversations were quite static-y and choppy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alert Radio could be more user friendly
After receiving the radio, it took way too long to get it set up for use. The directions could have been written in laymans terms for someone who is not that familiar with all the newest gadgets. I dont like the fact that there is no on and off switch either. It does eat batteries like there is no tomorrow, and even though the directions do mention a charger to be used with Ni-Cad betteries, none was offered as an optional purchase.
3-0 out of 5 stars It works
First time I've got a NOAA Weather Radio. Read up a little online beforehand so I knew I wanted one with S.A.M.E and this looked to fit the bill.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this Radio
Living here in Maine weather counts and moves fast.Unlike those in the Midwest at least we do not have tornados.Thank goodness because the best thing this radio would be good for, in that part of the country, would be throwing it into the wind and hope that it's poor quality would come back and kill you cleanly. Why?Because a radio with dead batteries that is almost impossible to program is much less useful than all of our basic senses, sight, sound etc, so if you counted on the radio you would hope a clean exit from this world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice radios for a variety of applications
As I was recently out in a remote area with a team of 8 people performing a month long task, we needed to communicate.Where we were there was no such thing as "roaming" for our cell phones, but luckily, the town had a Wal-Mart.For 50$ a pair, I decided to buy 2 sets of radios so teams could communicate with each other.
5-0 out of 5 stars Uniden GMR855-2CK GMRS
I tested it in the real world. In around the houses and tree and wires it will work about 1 to 1.5 miles. Thats was it at best. In the open with a view of each radio, about 5 miles was it. That was over open water. Maybe if you were on top of a mountain and the other was on top of another mountain at 8 miles away with the power boost-maybe it will go the 8 miles, but i doubt it. But besides that i have used many brands of these radios, and this one seems to be better, for the price. I say if you really need to communicate at a larger distance, use your cell phone-- if you have a signal-HA! Can you hear me now- get it??4-0 out of 5 stars Uniden GMR855... best deal for the range.
I purchased the UNIDEN GMR855 about a month ago and for the price they are just great. The range is about 1 3/4 mile in an environment of trees and houses. Beyond that, all I get is nothing, I don't really know if the claim of 8 miles is true as the conditions in an open area may have a lot to do with it. But it beats the old walkie-talkiesof the 60s and 70s where you could only reach to you neighbors house across the street and all you would get is a static voice threw the speaker and you still have to make out what the hell they said! TheRechargeable NiMH base is great.... no battery replacement. I do wish they had a VOC microphone feature as like the UNIDEN GMR885. The large menu makes it easy to see. The buttons are nice, large and easy to press. The case is rugged. These radios are great for anyone looking for an affordable communication device with in there average range of a complex environment. I would like to see in the future a true 8 mile 2 way personal radios able to receive threw all conditions! There ya go UNIDEN... a project for ya! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little radio for family ski trip
I purchased two pairs of Cobra PR 3000 GMRS 2 watt radios for our ski trip this year. It's one of the best purchases I ever made. I looked at Motorola and Midland before purchasing these. They have more power than Motorola and better built than Midland. I like that most of the buttons are on the face and you don't have to do a lot of menu browsing. We skied at Alta and Snowbird Utah. The ability to talk over the slopes really amazed me. We tried them out in our neighborhood and they worked pretty well. We could converse for a half mile with no trouble at all through trees and houses. However if you go behind a hill the ability to converse is greatly reduced. At Alta Snowbird you are in a canyon with granite walls, so I think the signal is bouncing off the canyon walls, becuase we could talk for miles, even with ridges between us. At the frequencies and power levels of these radios you should get great reception if you are in line of sight without too many obstructions. But don't expect to go much over a half mile if you have a lot of obstructions. If you are true line of sight with no obstructions, you can go further than the 5 miles advertised. In a granite canyon like little cottonwood canyon they were great! We were in a group of 8 skiers and it was snowing hard and difficult to stay together. My 12 year old daughter got separated from us and called in to let us know where she was. It saved hours of anxiety for us and kept us from ruining our ski day. Same thing happened the next day with my 11 year old daughter. As far as I'm concerned it was well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best and Better than the Rest !
This is a very interesting radio. It replaces and way exceeds the now obsolete M-series Motorola Mu24cvs 4 channel radios. The M-series radios were so good that the XTN would have go a bit to beat them. Beat them it does. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited range; best features require separate accessories
I cannot for the life of me imagine how this company can, in good conscience, claim that these radios have a range of up to two miles. OK, maybe if the two people using them are in a flat, empty field with direct line of sight. Maybe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uniden Voyager
As a portable VHF radio, this product is the best. Compact, excellent range, and outstanding clarity. I am an ocean kayaker who was looking for a safety item ( to satisfy my wife) this product clearly delivers and provides the ruggedness and clarity that I did not think was available in a portable product. Uniden once again exceeds my expectations. When I can ride4-6 ft seas 4 miles offshore and still have Coast Guard clarity should I have problems, I am impressed. I pack my Voyager and my Garmin GPS 60CS in my PDF with a high level of confidence that I will be home for dinner. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Stay connected with your buddies while on the trail, at the river, or anywhere else within a 10-mile range with this pair of GMR1058-2CK two-way radios. Also ideal as neighborhood watch tools and kid-sitting aids, each water-resistant radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 38 privacy codes, along with a voice-operated transmitter that enables hands-free communication when used with an optional HS 2467 headset and microphone. The power-boost button expands the radio's range by emitting maximum power when a GMRS channel is detected.Read more
