Just what my home theatre needed...
I read the reviews, as I always do, here on Amazon and at epinions before buying this little subwoofer!
This one is a real gem
I recently upgraded my5.1 THX home theater system by adding a replacement AV Receiver and this gem of a subwoofer.
Amazing deal & very powerful
I recently got this sub to add on to two satellite speakers, and the results are unbelievable. With the gain turned up to barely to 25%, everything already starts to rattle (and I have a bit of experience with bass: 200W 12" sub in my car). This 100W sub is very efficient with its well designed front port, and the amplifier is very clean. At high outputs (haven't actually put it to the max because #1 wearing it in + #2 afraid of ppl complaining...), the sound is not distorted at all. Very, very good deal being 100W RMS (not 100W max like many of the other advertised systems...Yamaha). From a very dependable company too, Sony. Couldn't be happier!!! ... Read more

A great steal for the money
For the $100 that Amazon is selling this for, you cannot go wrong.This is a very high quality subwoofer.It mated very well with my Energy Take 5 system.(same maker incidentally)I find it more powerful and musical than the Energy ES8 sub.
Little subwoofer with BIG clean sound.
It gets a five star for what it is. I listen with class A electronics through my Klipschorns which weigh about 200 pounds each. I listen in a 1000 square foot room with 12 foot tall ceilings. One of these little subwoofers can really made a dent in the room. I recommend that anyone interested in good bass buy two of these and place them in the two front corners of the room. You won't get Klipschors but you will get very good bass for movies. And it's not half bad for music. It really performed well on Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. When I played D'Drum it lifted the fringe on my rug.

Good, deep bass
After replacing my older receiver with a digital capable unit, I discovered a great loss in my low frequency output. So, I decided to add a sub to regain the hard hitting lows I crave in music and movies.

almost completely useless...
Polk makes great speakers (LSi series), good speakers (RTi series), ok speakers (Monitor series), and mediocre speakers (R series).But like most speaker manufacturers, their subs are horrible for the money.Why?Because they are betting that if you are already buying their speakers, you'll likely want to buy one of their subs too, especially if some slimey and/or ignorant salesperson tells you that you MUST "match" the sub and speakers.
Polk PSW-10: Great, with some reservations
I purchased this subwoofer about 2 months ago and since then have given it an extensive listening test.Following is a list of things I would do to improve sound quality as well as some reservations I have toward it.

A must have for any good stereo system
I've never written a review for any of the many items that I have purchased from [...], but I just had to write a review for this one.All I can say is "wow!"I'm not sure why I waited so long to get a good subwoofer for my stereo system.The low-end music reproduction for music AND movies is OUTSTANDING!I am using Monster XP stranded speaker wire, so I can't comment on the sound quality with the speaker wire that came with the unit.Be sure to experiment with different amplification levels and cut-off frequencies (adjustable on the unit).

Best Deal You'll Find
This Sony unit is absolutely a delight. I would stack it up against my Velodyne any day of the week. Having been an audiophile for 30+ Years and a Home Theater nut since before they invented the term, I've gone thru a lot of equipment over the years.

excellent, high quality add-on to the Tivoli
I use a Tivoli model satellite as my alarm clock in the bedroom, and it also serves as a receiver for my Sonos system. While the sub doesn't deliver the sonic impact of, say, dual 12's in an automotive bandpass box, if you're discriminating enough to be using a Tivoli in the first place, you'll appreciate the subtle sonic addition. Nice item.
Bought this with my Tivoli Mk2 stereo. Great bass and not too thumpy. It really makes a difference and I cannot imagine my system without it.

Like the Sub alot
I believe that the wildly different opinions about on this sub have to do with how people listen and what they want. I have the Model 2, and when I plugged the sub in, I really noticed a difference, but did not hear a "thump thump" intrusion. I prefer this. For those looking to hear a seperate base line, look elsewhere. I think that the sub is worth it and adds a great deal.

great, but...
This is a pretty darn effective device and is a great addition to most home theaters. My review is in two parts, the good and the bad.
A real kick in the pants!
I'm a gadget guy with a decent home theater set up, so when I learned about the buttkicker, I figured "why not"? and ordered the kit with the wireless connection unit.
Buttkicker LFE Kit is awesome
I purchase the Buttkicker LFE Kit along with the wireless transmitter.I have a four piece section (L shaped) and was told I'd need multiple LFE's to feel it in all seats. I installed the mounting plate under two legs (vs one as the instructions suggest) and pushed all seats as tight as I could.I purchased enough of the rubber isolators to fit under all the legs on the sectional.Man oh man is this thing powerful.You have to play with a bit to find the sweet spot, but I feel the movement from all four pieces of my sectional.Absolutely amazing!Watching King Kong is a thrill.As for the wireless kit, it works like a dream and not having to run wires everywhere was even better. ... Terrific sub -- if you get it at the right price
I got this sub to handle the low end for a stereo pair of bookshelf speakers from SVS (the very good SBS-01). I'm using the speakers in my office, so it's not a critical listening environment; I just wanted decent sound. Still, I'm very impressed with the Athena sub. Even though it's only got a 10" speaker, it delivers an amazing amount of clean, deep bass. The built-in amplifier is very powerful; I'm using the sub on a hard wooden parquet floor, and I only have the amp's volume control turned up to around 2 (out of 10). That hard floor can also make the bass a bit overpowering on occasion. I'm going to try putting a bit of carpet under the sub and seeing how that affects the sound.

WOW... a value plus extreme proformance!!
Okay, I know the name brand isn't well known in the industry but here is some high quality stuff. The sub can handle up to 750 watts. This package is one of the best. I went to Circuit city to get a sub plus an amp installed. Then I found out that needed the wires and the power supply and a whole mess of other stuff. They wanted 350 for an 8" sub with a wimpy built in amp and that's w/o installation. Total waste. I went on Amazon and got this package and had it professional installed for only 180!! Perfect setup!
I purchased this sub woofer and Sony's SS-MB350H Bookshelf Speakers. This cube's SAW (Super Acoustically Loaded) design means it has no port. That makes it a prefect sonic match for the Acoustic Suspension of the SS-MB350H speakers. This combination is unique in the Sony lineup, all the other speakers are ported. Forget about the less expensive ported subs, or the more expensive towers. Buy the bargain priced SS-MB350H bookshelf speakers, and use the money you saved there to upgrade to this top of the line sub. Can you tell I am enthused about the results? This is one awesome setup!

Great sound for music and movies
After reading many positive reviews I purchased this sub 6 months ago.It has been great for movies and music.I like the auto shutoff feature.It provides tight bass for this price point and it will certainly rock the house in movies.I have it in a 14 x 22 foot room and it is plenty.

Shakes the walls, bothers the neighbors, adds great bass... what more could you want from a sub?
I purchased this sub to complement two polk audio speakers for a 2.1 system.After browsing around online as well as some in person visits to stores, this is the most bang for the buck one could get from a sub.Whether watching a movie, or listening to music, the sub adds such rich bottoms, I'm very happy.

Major let down
I was very excited to see that my sub had finally arrived and couldn't wait to get it hooked up to my receiver. Unfortunately it was a wasted effort, as the sub did not work at all. Hooked up to a Denon receiver, carefully read the instructions and adjusted the the phase and crossover and got nothing. Tried every setting on the the receiver to make sure nothing was overlooked and still the light on the sub would not turn from red to green to indicate getting a signal, and still no sound. Went out and bought a new LFE cable to cover my bases and spoke to a tech at the store who could not add anything that I hadn't already tried. Bottom line, after 2 days of trial and error it doesn't work. Upon logging my return info to Amazon expecting to get a replacement, I am told that there are no more dispite their website listing them as a available for new purchase. This reenforces why I normally deal straight with the local electronics store. The one time I stray I get burned!

Big punch in a small package - Extraordinary Value
I replaced a JBL subwoofer that was twice the size of the Infinity PS-8. I am a fan of JBL equipment, especially their bookshelf speakers. The JBL sub had dual 6.5" drivers that fired down. I put carpet coasters under the legs of the sub so the drivers would remain far enough above the carpet to move without bottoming-out on the carpet. I even put a board under the sub, but took it out soon after becasue it made no difference. The sound was always kind of muddy with the JBL. I never got that tight bass I like so much when listening to The Police and other bass-heavy music. The sub was great for movies that had a lot of wall-shaking bass. This sub could rattle the walls, but it lacked definition, which I refer to as "tight" bass sound.
All I can say is ... WOW.
I'm kind of an amateur audio nut, and one of my longest held fantasies was to have an audio workstation at my desk that would allow me to do just about anything I wanted to in terms of simple recording, copying, listening to music, etc.
great sub for the size
i recently purchased the bose acoustimass 3, but i was dissapointed with the bass output, too much high end, not enough low end, so i returned it, and started looking for powere sub, i first tried JBL, the bass was not to impressive, tried MTX same sounds, tried POLK same, the i walked away and heard a good bass sound it was the 8 inch Infinity PS8, awesome bass for an 8" sub, a lil pricy, but get what you pay for, its still under $300, which is pretty good....great great great sub ... Great sound, good price
This puts the thunder in the picture pretty darned well.Be careful setting this up, as the speaker is pointed downward and when you pick it up you are touching the speaker if you are not careful.
