5-0 out of 5 stars compass
I bought this compass to use with my telescope and it is large enough to use and see with a red light at night.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK for simple work
The Brunton Nexus Star is a low-cost, fairly rugged, basic compass.Like any low-cost compass, if you know how to use it you can get where you want to go, but it lacks features you may later wish you had.On the plus side, it is lightweight, inexpensive, and fairly thin, so it doesn't take up a lot of room in your pocket. On the minus side, the baseplate is very short, so it is harder to use with a map and a little less accurate when reading a bearing. The biggest disadvantage, in my opinion, is that it doesn't have a true declination adjustment; it is advertised as having a "declination scale" which is not the same.On a baseplate compass, you take a bearing by lining up the compass needle inside the North Reference Indicator (sometimes called the "Doghouse") etched on the bottom of the vial.Compasses with true declination adjustment allow you to rotate this "Doghouse" to align it with the desired declination. That way you always read a bearing by aligning the needle inside the Doghouse. On the Nexus Star, however, you can't do this.Instead, you have to remember to line up the compass needle with the point on the scale that corresponds to the local declination. In this case, the needle is not boxed inside the doghouse, and I find it can lead to errors, especially when you are tired and not thinking clearly after a long hike.If you always navigate using magnetic bearings rather than true bearings, this isn't a problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the bubbly
I love compasses. I don't go anywhere without one. In my car, in my backpack, on a plane, If I'm going out...a compasses is going with me.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money
I was dissapointed. Quality was poor overall. The cover was supposed to lock in various positions, but just flopped around helplessly. The indicator would only float freely when the base was held off-level. Lanyard interferes with cover action. I went out and bought a $15 cheapo that works better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensitive to mounting
I bought my wife a Brunton Rally for her Jeep Wrangler.Originally, I mounted it in the center of the dashboard and she mentioned that it indicated NW intermittently - even times she knew she was driving straight South. When the compass was moved away from that location, it read accurately.Apparently, a magnet in the stereo was throwing it off.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brunton Nexus Rally Compass Great for a Car
Before buying a product I know nothing of, I do lots of research on the Internet.I first tried a Ritchie compass for my car (made in the USA), but its accuracy was questionable.I then focused on a Silva 58, made in Sweden, but the cost was high.Further research showed that Amazon sells a Brunton Nexus -- which is made by Silva and is exactly the same model as the Model 58, for an incredible price. The shipping was free, it came in three days, and it looks and works great. It has comnpensators that you can adjust, but I didn't need to.Attaches to the center of my dash, very easy to read and always accurate.Overall, a great product at a great price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably priced good product
This is a great PDA and GPS receiver in one. I have been using this for 3 weeks and I love it. The only problem is that it requires a soft reset atleast twice a week (pda crashes). It provides routing and voice prompts. It does provide optimal routing 75% of the time. Overall good product.

This is a terrific device.I am a long-time palm user, and this upgrade (adding the GPS and mapping) is awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of bang for the buck!
This unit is smaller than I thought it would be, which is a good thing. My friend said he wished it had a bigger screen, but with a bigger screen comes bigger size, so I'm happy the way it is. It includes a nice leather case that makes it bulkier, but protects it from scratches.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy Price Wise just don't expect it to work in Manhattan NY
I just bought this unit 3 days ago.Was originally thinking of buying a new Dell Axim with the GPS CF Card but when I saw the price + all the features this unit was offering "I had to have it!"I'm a computer consultant in NY City and am not too familiar with the area and thought this would be awesome because of my 99% lost rate, but unfortunately, in NY City, it has never achieved a GPS Lock, ever.I even downloaded their Jump Start app that is suppose to give the GPS on the unit a lil kick in the arse to help it achieve a lock but it doesn't work.So if your Manhattan bound, better just program your route ahead of time and manually use the mapping portion because the GPS is useless there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Device
As I type this I am currently listening to my MP3s using the built in speaker and the 1 gb SD card I bought for $30.00.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit surprised!
I bought the X-Lander because I am a pilot and wanted a bit more information when I needed it. The watch is well designed and of good quality. A few things did disappoint me, but I think they are outweighed by the features, however.
2-0 out of 5 stars Way too big
I bought this watch because I wanted an altimeter but needed to return it because of its size. It is HUGE - looked like I had a clock on my wrist. Take into consideration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Watch!!
I gave this watch to my fiance & he has really enjoyed tracking our altitude gain on bike rides.I've appreciated knowing the temperature. Can't wait for ski season!

3-0 out of 5 stars Get the old style ...
I've had a VECTOR for more than 5 years, GREAT TOOL, but it finally slipped away to lost-watch land. I bought a new one and was very sad to send it back. You see, I could see the old black letters on a white face just fine, even in bright sunshine. The new improved model has faint green letters on a black background -- much harder to see while hiking or sailing, especially when wearing polarized sunglasses. The graphics on the new model are also much harder to discern --for example, the indicator for degrees F or degrees C is tiny (granted that is probably an issue only during set-up). The good folk at Suunto have still not addressed the problem of accidentally uncalibrating the barometric sensor -- that's a problem if you hit the buttons while running -- and the manual still doesn't help you get out of the mess in the field. It was a great product for backcountry activity, now it's mostly for show.Look for the old version and buy a new battery ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Suunto Vector
This is the second Suunto Vector watch i have owned. Only because the first one was lost. The only two draw backs of this watch is battery life and my band broke twice in two years. Seems to me they could offer a much longer life battery and a band that would hold up alot better. the battery lasts about 6 months only. For the price of this watch ($230) you think tehy could do alittle better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
This product really expanded the usefulness of my Samsung i-700 PDA/Phone.The first week, it was a huge help in getting me into the heart of Chicago with only one wrong turn (the turns were too close together for the unit to switch fast enough!).The one small glitch I had with getting the GPS to power-up was solved with a quick phone call to Pharos, and I've had no problems since. My only grumbles have been that my PDA cannot be made to stay on more than 5 minutes, while powered; and the Ostia maps are not as detailed as Microsoft Streets & Trips.Otherwise, Great! ... Editorial Review

The Garmin Geko 301 is one of the smallest and lightest waterproof GPS units on the market. This inexpensive unit has a sleek design and simple operating system, and it's WAAS-enabled with an accuracy of three meters or less. With its sturdy, dark gray case, the Geko 301 packs an amazing amount of functionality into its slim frame--making it a great all-around handheld GPS unit for general navigation. In addition to regular GPS features, the Geko 301 includes an electronic compass and a barometric altimeter. The compass provides bearing information while you're standing still, and the altimeter determines your precise altitude and provides a 12-hour pressure-trend tool for gauging changing weather conditions.Read more

  • Compact 12-channel GPS receiver with high-contrast display (100 x 64 pixels)
  • WAAS-enabled for 3-meter accuracy; built-in electronic compass and barometric altimeter

  • Easy operation: five buttons for one-hand use
  • 12-hour operation on 2 AAA batteries; includes serial PC interface

Reviews (2)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for its size
Amazingly compact, no larger than a small cell phone. Easy to operate, even though there are only five buttons. Can be configured to use different units and coordinate systems. The battery life is okay but can be as short as four hours, depending on various factors (which I wish were documented somewhere). The built-in compass and altimeter are neat, but probably not worth the additional cost over the Geko 201, especially if you have a separate compass anyway. The screen resolution is okay, but in the view that shows tracks and waypoints the labels sometimes start overlapping and get unreadable when you zoom out. Getting a signal can require anywhere from less than a minute to more than ten minutes, depending on how much time (or distance?) has passed since the device was turned off or lost the signal. Getting a signal in urban areas, in forrests or even steep mountain sides turned out to be difficult or impossible; don't know how much of an issue this is for comparable devices. Finally, the USB cable which must be purchased separately is outrageously expensive. You'd expect this kind of thing to be included, but no luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first GPS
A great simple GPS with some neat extras such as Compass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Garmin GPSMap 60cs
This GPS is a pretty good deal for the money. From an operational standpoint, it works well.It is apparent though, this is really all about being portable, the screen is too small for good marine or car use.For my use, mostly marine, I set a lot of waypoints and scrolling on this tiny of a screen is just lame. Not any fault of the unit I know, just something to think about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it before I even got it
I had read quite a few of the online reviews for this GPSr and realized there wasn't much negative about it.I was right, and I think I made a good investment.Although this model has been updated with an expandable, this one I found new for under $300 and it does the trick for what I need.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product
Apparently Amazon is now the place to share your design opinion even though you don't own the product.Nice.How about next time you comment on something you own?And secondly (And you would know this if you OWNED the product) the GPS receiver is sitting in a bluetooth sled. The sled can be removed and you can hardwire the receiver and use it as a standard GPS mouse.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Design
Thats the ugliest gadget I have ever seen. I dont own one and I dont plan to buy one either... But just pointing out that zero thought was put into design the product. Sorry to disapoint anyone who has actually bought it and liked it but I couldnt resist commenting on that ugly design :))

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent maps, but a tiny screen...
We use this GPS every day to find residential lots by boat on large lakes. Most important to us, this unit has excellent, accurate maps, better than the Garmin or Magellan. For the price, it is impossible to beat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lowrance iFinder Go2
I am a newbie to GPS and there is definitely a learning curve. The Lowrance manual that comes with the unit is excellent to getting you started quickly, but you absolutely must get the advanced manual, available on-line at lowrance.com, to really enjoy the features. It does take some study and practice, but it is worth the effort, it is not that bad and the unit is (to me) impressive. It does not have street-by-street navigation, and it doesn't talk to me, but units that do cost $hundreds more. When I am in my car, it is quite usable; otherwise, street-by-street navigation is unnecessary anyway. I have recommended this unit to family, and feature-for-feature, I thought it was the best value of all the units I found in its price range. It quickly locates the satellites, often faster than the documentation would suggest, and I have found it remarkable that it has maintained the signals in very improbable situations. It is much more sensitive and reliable than I expected after reading another review that complained about signal acquisition and maintenance; I have no comlaints whatsoever about that.
