2-0 out of 5 stars Better available
This compass handles very poorly compared to other manufacturers. The pin for the lid is cheap and the hing will likely break. The card (actual compass part that spins) wobbles a lot so it's difficult to get an exact bearing. It is like the oil in the compass is very thin. Also, the direction line lid spins easily, making it possible to take a bad reading.Ironically, this is the Silva weakness as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars decent enough for a compass
I must admit I like it.The compass is very precise and the brass case feels nicer to hold than a plastic case.Outside of that, the compass does and feels like it should.I would, however, recommend a cheaper plastic cased compass for those who don't use a compass that often.Enough said.

3-0 out of 5 stars a bit bulky and old school but
sturdy and well built...I can't fault it but I would not buy another. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun little GPS
I've been using GPS devices for nearly 15 years. This device is very cool.If you are planning on using it for Geocaching, consider getting the Magellan Mapsend DirectRoute in the US.I also purchased the Mapsend TOPO thinking that is what would work best for Geocaching.
1-0 out of 5 stars Non-Intuitive and Ultimately Defective
I purchased the Explorist 400 with Mapsend for wilderness travel.Getting the detailed maps set up were far from intuitive, taking several hours to figure it out, and I am computer literate.Once set up, it did function well for four days in backcountry, then the screen froze into tiny dots.I was able to reset it, but since then it cannot effectively pick up satellite signals -- it will find, maybe, one signal even if standing in a clearing.Either the antenna or some other electronic component is defective.A reload of software did nothing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does what I want. :-)
(This is my first GPS so this is coming from a not so GPS technically inclined person.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A multi-functional GPS wonder, But....
A multi-functional GPS wonder, But... be sure and have a hefty stack of money if you want all the maps, bells and whistles that make this unit so remarkable.Lets start with the main reason I purchased the 276c, for my boat. The Blue Chart marine maps combined with the flexability of the unit makes even complex marine navigation a snap. The large screen allows me to see my position on the water at a glance. Even in areas that are wrought with hazards and multiple channel markers the screen shows everything I need to know to safely navigate at any sunlight angle. When I moved it to my car, I enjoyed the same features that made it great on the water. The turn by turn routing (with voice) and the big screen worked flawlessly. Using it for land nav was also enjoyable except for the size of the unit making it a bit cumbersome.Regarding other peoples complaints about Garmins tight hold on its pricey mapping products, Well they are in business to make money, they have great map products, and you usually get what you pay for. Overall I am very pleased with this product, with the only real downside being the high cost of obtaining all the additional "proprietary" goodies you need to flesh the system out for multiple usage. Again you get what you pay for and for the price I would say that this is one of the finer GPS units on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin 276C - excellent !
I am very pleased. I use the unit on a motorcycle and it has met my expectations so far. Easy to use menus. Easy to see screen. Very satisfied. Only complaint is maps are too expensive. $ 75 for a CD ?

2-0 out of 5 stars Playing by Garmin's Rules
If you purchase a Garmin product, especially this one, you are firmly in the clutches of a Company that gives you what they want you to have, not what you might want. Everything Garmin makes is proprietary so that nothing else will work on a Garmin. You will be unable to transfer data to Garmin media, you will be insulted by a website either written by or for aliens and should you call the customer service or cartography lines assuming you wish to wait and wait, you will get to talk to people so uninformed about Garmin products your wait was wasted. The dingus works ok with Garmin chips, but the chips are inadequate or incomplete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool mapping gps
I have had no (emphasis NO) software or hardware problems with my unit.I have owned 4 GPS's over the years.I like the user interface on my Garmin eTrex Vista better. But this unit gets faster fixes and works better under trees. It's a 14 channel rather than 12 channel receiver.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great GPS
I was concerned about the negative reviews but bought the eXplorist 600 anyway. Great product, glad I didn't pay attention to the reviews. Works exactly as advertised. Onyl issue I had was downloading Mapsend Topo to the SD card. You have to read the instructions. You can not use the serial number on the box or on the sticker on the GPS...YOU MUST USE THE SERIAL NUMBER SHOWN ON THE GPS UNIT SCREEN FOR THE SOFTWARE TO WORK. A quick call to Magellan customer support (on hold for less than 5 minutes) solved the problem. Glad I bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why did I change my mind?
I was all set to by a Garmin and let myself be talked into buying this.Short and sweet XP Pro doesn't recognize the driver even if you say it's ok.Installs it but, won't use it.That means the GPS will not communicate with the computer.MapSend Direct is also imcompatable with XP Pro so it doesn't matter if it talks to the computer or not.I've sent off my e-mails to Magellan but, I hear their support is sad.I hope my credit card company can help me recover some of my money. The GPS seems to be quite fast, accurate and sensitive...compared to my 8 year old ColorTrak which has no problem with XP Pro. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars safer driving
The PNI Wayfinder helps me drive safely by showing me the direction I am traveling on the compass-so I make fewer direction errors. The temperature gauge is helpful when the weather turns cold by alerting me to the possibility of ice conditions-helpful in the Pacific Northwest winters.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review of V7000 Wayfinder
After reading the reviews, I decided to take the chance and purchase the above unit for my car. Unfortunately, after calibration and adjustment for local declination, the compass was off 45-60 degrees when compared to known reference points. Recalibration did not change the accuracy. Since then, I purchased a traditional spirit compass which after installing and compensating in the same vehicle performs accurately.

4-0 out of 5 stars I really like my new Wayfinder V7000
Initially I was skeptical about purchasing the device solely due to the reviews of other purchasers.About half were of a negative tone. But, I realized nearly all the negative reviews were of a nature dealing with the technical workings (i.e. calibration, etc.) of the compass and were probably from those who can't program their VCR's.I made the purchase and found the installation to be straightforward; you can make it as easy or difficult as you want.Calibration is simple and quick.I found the compass, thermometer and baraometer/altimeter to be very accurate or as accurate as one could expect. The backlight is sufficient and the light sensor that turns the backlight on automatically in the dark is a very nice feature.Living here in central Virginia our summers are hot and humid so I observe the manufactures suggestion to remove the compass from the vehicle when not in use. It's easy to remember since my cellphone is parked near the compass. One negative point.Calibration is necessary if the device is disconnected/removed from the mounting point.Since I remove it religously each day I am calibrating at least once a day.As a result, the graphic text is starting wear and fade away from the function buttons. All in all, I am very pleased with my Wayfinder V7000. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate -but could have been great
I bought my PiN 570 in London before starting a 6 week trip around the UK.Being a Kiwi, I thought I'd support the Kiwi product.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great GPS with PDA functions
I recently bought this item. The GPS functions are great but take a little getting used to. Your can plan a trip and the PIN 570 will tell you where to turn and quite cleaverly if you decide to take a different rout it will re compute the rest of the journey after warning that you have deviated from planned rout. It can be set to avoid toll roads and for varous ather settings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Garmin GPS10
The bluetooth GPS device works well. The fact that it is weather resistant and has a strong magnet for holding it on the roof of your car adds to the versatility. However, the plug which weather proofs the connector socket when it is not being charged is not attached and very easy to lose. Also, the software for use with PDAs and phones does not allow you to plan a trip on your desktop or laptop and then download routes and waypoints to the phone. With that caveat, overall operation is excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great - But some of them die quickly
I've ordered about 20 of them. This is the best bluetooth GPS receiver out there. But I've had 4 or 5 of them just quit after a few uses.Garmin grumbles but honors the warranty by completely replacing the unit.GILware software is the best Windows based GPS navigation and mapping software and I use it in conjunction with these units; it is a great, easy to use setup. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good upgrade over the eTrex
We had an eTrex, which my clumsiness sent to the bottom of a creek, never to be seen again. I like this unit a lot more than the eTrex:
4-0 out of 5 stars Good solid unit
Nice unit, locks on fast and keeps the signal, it even worked inside my house. The base map that is loaded isn't much and only has some cities. The Garmin web sites indicate a "Marine Data Base" is loaded but I can't find it and we have a number of buoys near our house. It does have larger cities loaded. The Trip and Waypoint Manager software is pretty weak and I had problems getting it to load on my XP machine.Good crisp display and many options for the displays.I upgraded from an old Garmin and I would recommend this unit for a non-mapping use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garmin's not what it use to be
I purchased two of these units the first one worked OK. The second one has a problem. In a side by side comparison the signal qualities of the two units vary. I checked there accuracy and tracking with OziExplorer moving map software. The first unit tracks pretty good, but the second units position is off a large percentage of the time and sometimes as much as 400 meters. I sent the faulty unit to Garmin to be repaired. They sent it back with a description of the problem and that it had been fixed. I checked the unit out and it is the same as when I sent it to them. Now I'm stuck with a dud. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great looking maps, can't find its way out of a paper bag.
I logged 870 miles with the iway 350.270 miles around maryland it was / is a great item. I took it on our first trip to New York and Long Island and it was terrible. The first problem occurred on the New Jersey turnpike. I was supposed to use the turnpike from start to exit 18 and at exit 4 we stopped to eat. The unit said I was off course because the rest area was 100 feet from the highway. However when we returned to the highway the unit could not chart the course any more. It said I was doing 95 miles a hour when i was doing 70, and it would lose satellites and go searching for them in the middle of the highway no obstructions of any kind anywhere. I even pulled over at exit 6 and we waited for 20 minutes to see if we just needed to stop the car for it to do the job. It did not recalculate our course until after exit 18 some 100 + miles from when it acted up. We even tried a full restart and cancel route and retried again from the address book and from direct typing the information again. About 1 mile from our destination it worked for 2 blocks and was lost again. Then after 2 more blocks we found where we where going. We often get lost on this trip this is why we purchased the unit. Then on the trip from the Bronx to Long Island a 30 mile trip it stopped 5 blocks into the journey and was recalculating. I had to call the people we where visiting and they directed us by phone. However about 1 mile from their place it started working again. We used it on long island with no trouble at all. Then ontrip back to the Bronx it worked pretty good only losing its position once on a major highway no trees or obstructions. Then on our way back from the Bronx to long Island it was lost half the way finding position and calculating . The same exact way we went in both directions but it was clearly not right leaving the Bronx. On our way back to Maryland it operated pretty good after a short stretch of lost signals and redirecting and we used exactly the same roads in both directions. I did update the software to the new 1.2.0 days before we took the trip.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best portable unit around for the price!
This is a solid, feature-rich unit at a great price.Used it on several long trips and it performed well.Satellite locking and overall operation have been improved with the latest free software version 1.2.0 (if you have an older version, upgrades are available at the Lowrance web site).Screen brightness and touch screen controls are top notch - better than many higher-end units.Unit can get slightly sluggish if playing MP3's while navigating, but not so much so to cause any problems.Rechargeable battery life is better than most.In the sub-$500 class GPS this unit is tops!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat it.Nothing else is even close.
Have had i-WAY 350C for 2.5 months.Has performed well since first plugging it in.Initial Sat lock 2 minutes or so.So much configurability, and amazing details available for map screens. Base maps are pre-loaded for US, Canada. Show as many or as few as you need. Address Book holds 1,000 contacts.Load in your via's (Way Points) and autosort, to get best route to make the stops you need.Several free skins available from Lowrance web site, to change the look, if you want. Did experience a very few software inconveniences at first. Not really a problem since the configurability allows "Work Arounds" if needed.

This is my second Garmin unit.My first was the eMap.I loved that one so I only researched other garmin units. This one had everything I wanted.I use it on the road, hiking the AT and marine navigation. To get more than simple use you have to purchased additional software.City Select for detailed local street level, Blue Charts for bathometric charts and topo for hiking.Battery life is excellent! The unit is larger than my eMap, but very light and water proof.
3-0 out of 5 stars Bulky and expensive
I didn't realize that it is so bulky. it doesn't fit in a pocket. And, as other GPS-only devices, it is limited in functionality. I returned this item and got myself Dell Axim x51v and GlobalSat Bluetooth GPS receiver, which I'm pretty satisfied with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
All i can say is this is not as big as some people make it out to be, and it's not heavy either. I bought this after owning a garmin 60cs (with an antenna) that kept flaking out, i.e. loosing signal in some relatively open forests. The XL HAS NEVER lost reception since I've had it (compared to the garmin, that lost reception under the first tree I walked under as i started to enter a forest). I work in both a montane rainforest and a lowland moist forest, and XL works exceptionally well in both, under heavy canopy and dense cloud cover, day or night. The only time it could not pick up anything was when i turned it off! Battery life is better than advertised, I got 20+ hrs of use on the 4 AA batteries. After getting use to this screen it's hard to go back to anything else. The joystick is a welcomed addition; it makes saving multiple waypoints (or POI as it is referred to on the GPS unit) a breeze. The directory system on the GPS is very intuitive; there is no need to be search endlessly for any features. Most importantly, with the SD card, my Mac recognizes the GPS.
2-0 out of 5 stars eXplorist XL Failed in Field
On a recent trip to Lake Powell where I had intended to use my Magellan eXplorist XL as a backup for navigation onm the lake, some geocaching.I am glad that this was not our primary navigation unit ir we could have had some problems. The unit would operate for a couple of hours then lock up and not operate until I had removed the batteries for an hour or so then reinstalled them.New batteries did not help. After seeing the comments about the slothful service support of Magellen I have returned the unit and will try something else.
5-0 out of 5 stars Magellan XL GPS features are unsurpassed
I recently upgraded my GPS by purchasing a Magellan Explorist XL handheld unit. It replaced the first GPS unit I purchased a few years ago ... a Magellan Meridian Gold. In this review, consequently, improvements, comparisons and features of the new Explorist XL are frequently compared to the older Magellan model.
