Editorial Review

Forget thinking outside the box--now you can stop worrying about the box altogether. Coby's DVD-224 is about the size of a hardcover book, so whether you're ferrying the player between the kitchen and the bedroom or hooking it up for periodic use by the kids, the DVD-224's small size permits enjoyment of DVD programs and music CDs in just about any room you want. While not portable in the traditional sense--the unit has no screen and requires AC power--the DVD-224 is much easier to move around, set-up, and use than a traditional component DVD player.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price
Really good audio and video. Don't like the buttons on the unit or the remote. They don't protrude enough. The unit seems made of the cheapest plastic on the market today. It does have advance to the next track buttons on the unit in addition to the remote, which I like. (I'm not a remote person and am mainly using this unit as a CD player)

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Performance
The Sony DVPNS55P/S Single Disc DVD Player is an excellent unit. The picture quality does look slightly better than my other units. However, most impressive is that this unit plays DVDs with dubious looking scratched surfaces and the like flawlessly. I truly was impressed and I purchased one of these units for that reason. The price is very affordable as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Better choice than others, good value for the price ...

5-0 out of 5 stars SONY over SamDUNG anyday!
I made the mistake of buying the SamDUNG DVD-HD860 with HDMI Up-Conversion.I have never seen a cheaper piece of junk DVD player.I mean...my PlayStation 2 plays DVDs better!
5-0 out of 5 stars the best
Buy this upconverting dvd player, i use it on my lcd tv using HDMI cable, one of the best things is it last unlike the 3 panasonic s-77 that i owned, the optical block that the laser sits on gets stuck for me anywhere from 6 months to as little as 30 days on the panasonic, this is a great player and is probly the simplist to set up properly, buy this until blue ray or HD dvd gets less expensive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific DVD player
I bought this player this past weekend and have been very impressed with it so far. I connected it to my high def tv with an HDMI-DVI cable, since my TV doesn't have and HDMI connection and the picture is simply amazing. The opening battle scene in Star Wars:Revenge of the Sith is jaw dropping in it's clarity, as is the battle on the volcanic planet between Anakina nd Obi Wan. Return of the King looks great in it's battle scenes and the scene where Aragorn goes to get the ghost king to fight for them. The dark scene looks great and a lot of detail that you normally would miss comes through beautifully. The scene in The Incredibles where Dash is being chased by the security guards through the jungle looks amazingly good, considering it has lots of quick changes of terrain from jungle to desert to water and the player handled everything easily. Set up on the player is easy and the remote is very easy to use. All in all, the only flaw I've found is that it does not support SACD or DVD-Audio. This is the only reason I'm not rating it a 5 star product. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OPPO OPDV971H Digital HD-Ready Up-Converting DVD Player
I have mixed feelings about this product.Even though I still rated it with 5 stars simply because you got much more than what you pay for it at $200 from Amazon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Player...Great for the Price
First of all, I did not buy on Amazon but wished I did. Amazon has it for same price but free shipping. I don't know if other brands would have looked better or worse. It works great, has the Faroudja chip, and is perfect until HD DVD's become more popular and cheaper. I will say that when you call OPPO the company is very eager to answer any questions you may have and I like the fact the company takes so much pride in their products that they are constantly updating them by listening to what owners of them have to say. Everyone complaigned early on the remote had a terrible layout. So, now it comes with a newer remote that has a better layout. What I guess I'm saying is try getting results like that with Samsung or Sony. You can download any future updates OPPO has on your computer, burn to a CD and load into your OPPO player and it's updated. I see HD DVD players are on sale for $369 (the Toshiba HA-1). I didn't go there because of many bad reviews(ex: slow startup time, etc...). It's first generation technology and already Toshiba is coming out with the HA-2 to replace it. Bad reviews for the OPPO are very few. Get this player and you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Unit and Features
What I like about the Sony DVPNS55P/B Single Disc DVD Player is Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system that eliminates many motion artifacts by detecting the actual pixel movement, from those pixels that remain static in many scenes, resulting in a sharper picture. The picture quality does looks significantly better than my other units. Also of note is the way that this unit plays DVDs with questionable looking scratched surfaces with reasonable flawlessness. The price is very affordable as well and the black color design is very welcome to most component audio video systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeping it simple
I like the design, I like the price and so far it has been incredibly dependable. The picture is outstanding and I think this deserves five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Took the plunge
AND.........i'M GLAD i DID!There has been a lot of reviews out there and all the negatives and positives hold true, BUT most of the reviews, now that I experienced the HD A1, were more like nitpicking. Here's my take:
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Preeeeetty Preettttty Good!
I've known about this player for a while now.Everyone that was tech savvy was talking about it and had filled me up on all the info.I knew HD would be inevitable, obviously, and said, this will be my next player. (That said my previous player was a first Gen Phillips Magnavox of which still works great). And because of this player I wanted to get an HDTV as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars product died after 6 months
I bought this DVD player for my son to use in the car.It worked fine, at first--sound wasn't great, but all in all--he was pretty happy with it.For no apparent reason, after 6 months the screen went very, very dark.I called the Audiovox customer service "hotline" and was told that I could get it repaired for a flat fee of 93$.So...beware--the quality of this product is suspect.I guess the old adage holds true...you get what you pay for. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Plays PAL discs on my NTSC system
We bought our DVD-237 last night and have watched about eight hours of video on it.The great attraction for us is its ability to play our Chinese PAL video on our NTSC television. The picture looks good and the sound, through our 2.0 system, is clear and clean.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Thought I Was Purchasing
I searched Amazon.com for a multi-region DVD player so I could view DVDs that I have purchased overseas. This DVD player came up.There are no instructions within the packaging that state how to watch Non-region 1 DVDs.I called the manufacturer and they told me how to "rigg" it to play region 2 DVDs.Also, the remote control did not work from the very beginning and the manufacturer said I would need to pay money to replace it.They also let me know that the DVD player will not work without the remote control (not compatible with universal remotes). This is not a good product.

1-0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY
I got this DVD player because it was cheap and I figured it would get the Job done. Well big surpise every dvd I put in it skipped all over and soon it made a loud grinding noise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome DVD Player!Great Image & Sound with Composite Link!
I previously owned the Coby DVD-224 Compact DVD Player, and for some reason the Progressive Scan outputs on the Coby was not working with my HDTV Flat Panel LCD. So I needed something similar in size with Progressive Scan capabilities. Sadly, most high end Progressive Scan DVD players are large, flat and wide, and also extremely expensive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the van!!
We have had this unit since December of 2002 - we use it at home and in the van on trips (we have 13 inch TV/VCR combo that we also take with) We set it on the floor in between the front seats and have no problem with skipping etc. This is a great little unit!!

4-0 out of 5 stars exceeded expectations
This DVD player continues to surprise me more than one year after ownership. The vertical mount is great, it is one of the few players that has the 5.1 multichannel out to use with Dolby Digital Ready receivers. The setup page offers powerful settings such as hi res or no flicker picture modes, angle mark, S video AND component out, you can turn individual audio channels on and off, you can mixdown multiple channels into two, adjust center and rear delay, test tone, it even has a dyanamic range compression which is great for watching movies that have loud explosions and such late at night. The component out gives you near progressive scan quality in my opinion, but the best feature for me is DTS, I am using the DVD580M optical out connected to a Logitech Z-680 speaker system which is DTS, THX, and Dolby Digital ready. Put in a copy of the newly released Apollo 13, disc 2 (the IMAX version), turn on DTS decoding in Languages and you will see and hear what this DVD player can do. WOW. The only issue I have had with this player is there is a delay when switching layers, sometimes and I stress sometimes, the delay exceeds 5 seconds. Other that that, it is awesome, I know this is a discontinued product but I had to write a review in case someone is looking for a used DVD player. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for trip w/ small children
We bought this unit from Sam's Club right before a trip to Disney World. (8 hours in the car with a toddler--eek!)However, it was/is perfect! We still use it for trips around town when we're in massive traffic or our son is being really fussy. The case that keeps the dvd player on the back of the seat needs a little work, but we figured out a way to make it work for us.Also, the remote doesn't work well, but we don't really need to use it as a DVD usually lasts long enough between stops.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment at its best...........................
I bought this item for my son for x-mas.We are lucky if we got to use it 4 times before it stopped working.Products this bad should not be allowed to be sold.

I was told to wait until DEC. 2006 and then reply.. I suppose I'll recieve the same at that time to--- NORESPONSE -- BOTTOM LINE DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF *%**^%^&&^!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Top-Notch Universal DVD Player
There's no need to take anybody else's word for specs on this Sony DVD player when you can view or download, for free, the user's manual at http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=DVPNS90V&LOC=3. I've been running this Sony DVP-NS90V player through a Sony widescreen HDTV and a Pioneer amplifier/receiver for several days now, and I find almost none of the problems and limitations mentioned by previous reviewers. One, for example, states that there is "no bass management," yet you can (a) route more or less signal to the subwoofer by selecting "small" or "large" for the front speaker size (see page 76 of the user's manual), and also (b) increase or decrease the bass from -15 dB to +5 dB (see page 77 of the manual). Whether you prefer analog to digital audio, or you think SACD's are tops, is a matter of opinion, taste and choice and not an objective evaluation of a playback unit. I, for one, prefer DVD-Audio, and I mention this for an important reason: Some product ads and the user's manual clearly warn that this unit "will NOT play DVD-Audio discs." Happy surprize: it most certainly will! For my DVD-A's that have optional Dolby 5.1 and/or DTS tracks, the player simply ignores the primary DVD-A format (normally output via the 6 analog cable connectors) but still plays the Dolby or the DTS via the digital audio (optical or coaxial) connectors. For "pure" DVD-A's (without Dolby 5.1 or DTS tracks), it conveniently outputs the audio BOTH via the 6 analog AND the digital connectors. And in all cases above, the audio is full multi-channel surround, and not downmixed to 2-channel PCM, nor Prologic pseudo-surround. The only DVD-A function it lacks is the video slideshow often included on DVD-A's, and so displays only the "jacket image" onscreen. The Quick Setup allows any DVD newbie to be up and running in a short time. And the Custom Setup is so detailed with so many fine tweaks and trouble-shooters that it's bound to please even the high-end audio-video geek-freaks. In short, you'll find this to be a superior universal player, provided you read the user's manual (all 84 pages of it!), follow it, and connect equally high-quality, compatible equipment capable of exploiting its many fine features.

4-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't see a difference
I have an older Sony DVD player which I very happy with. Based on the reviews on Amazon, I bought the S90V with the hopes that it would have better compatibility with DVD+R DL disks I have burned. I also hoped to see an improvement in the picture with the upscaling. Not that the picture with my older DVD was bad, in fact, it's incredible. But I have heard so much pro and con about upscaling that I wanted to see it for myself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice player in this price range
I have played a few DVD's in this player and it is as a quality image on my Sony HDTV.I purchased this machine as a comparison for my older high-end player and as a backup device.A comparison between the two yielded excellent picture quality on par with my more expensive player.I wanted a SACD player and one with HDMI connector to go to my TV.Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Complicated!
Setup for cable is quick and easy through your cable box. However, picture quality during dvd play is terrible due to constant vertical waves, but does not occur when you're watching cable television run through the player.Unlike my previous Samsung dvd/vcr player, you have to add the 3-outlet video component cables PLUS a pair of audio cables to get decent a/vfrom dvds. Then you have to remember to switch back to "tv" component to watch cable tv.Has an internal clock for recording, but no clock display.Item is new, not remanufactured. On the plus side, dvds that "skipped" on my previous dvd/vcr player do NOT skip on the Panasonic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Clock?
I bought this to replace my VCR and my Apex DVD player.I wanted something rather simple and not too fancy.I am satisfied with the Panasonic, but I have one complaint.I have lost my glow-in-the-dark clock to which I have been accustomed for the past 15 or so years that I have had a VCR in my bedroom.Silly oversight in my opinion...

5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied
I could have bought a cheeper unit, but I didn't like the poor reviews other players got.I use this unit to view my store bought VCRs and DVDs and it works perfectly. This is an extremely complex piece of electronics equipment and the user manual can be quite itimidating. It was written by "techno geeks" for "techno geeks".However, you don't have to be intimidated.I could re-write the manual for someone like me in a single sentence; "Run the cables from the unit to your TV (a simple task), then press VCR if you want to watch a VCR, or press DVD if you want to watch a DVD.Then press "play".I would buy this same unit again if I needed another one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid performer, budget priced.
5 months of use and still going strong. I'm absolutely pleased with this HDMI player and I've had no serious complaints about this device thus far. [...] The picture quality is amazing and menu items are easy to navigate. I only wish they had more functionality buttons located on the device instead of having to run to the remote to skip a track/chapter. I don't know of a better player within this price range.I've only played movie DVDs thus far. [...]
4-0 out of 5 stars A good, reliable unit
Just recently purchased this player so I could upconvert and wait till someone wins the HD-DVD wars. For the price its a good, reliable unit, its as close to HD as you can get without shelling out the big bucks.Only one complaint and its minor, the Disc Tray could have been more bondo, it has to be handled with the utmost care, very flimsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Upconverting Player on the Market !
I am a tech guy and am very picky about my home theatre. I picked up this Panasonic Upconverting player and attached it to my 65" Hitachi Widescreen via HDMI. The picture will blow you away. Its one of the best pictures I have ever seen. You will enjoy this player tremendously. Do not spend more when Panasonic delivers for less than $100. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars SAMSUNG DVD PLAYERS = JUNK!
I bought this DVD player because of the HD Up-Conversion feature.BIG MISTAKE!I should have looked into this product a little more before buying.
4-0 out of 5 stars Despite the contrary this device can playback DivX video files
Okay so I just bought this item but I am feeling the need to write up a review so here it goes. I picked this player up from Best Buy after examining all the other players they had, the deciding factor for me to go with this Samsung DVD player is because my HDTV is also a Samsung. I wanted a good HD-upconverter and this was priced for $98 at Best Buy and was the only player I saw of this brand so I figured this is probably the best what Samsung had to offer so purchased it, but it was only until I got home and saw on BB's website that they sale a higher model HD-960, but the only difference I could tell is that the HD-96- can do 1080p and play back DivX which this player (HD-860) is not advertised to do.Although if you look at the middle of the HD-860 manual you will see in the section it describes the formats it can play by logo it also has DivX logo there.I later discovered that this player actually DivX support its hidden and has to be accessed a certain way and it doesn't require a hack to do it. Just create a video CD containing DivX files on there, you have to create folders and place the Divx video files in those folders so don't put DivX files just on the top level of the disc.Burn and close the disc when you've finished and insert it into this player. It will show a menu displaying the content on the disc (the folders), just select a folder you put your videos under and then the menu will display the list of video files it contains. To watch the video move the selection back up to the top in the folder where it will show "..." and just click the PLAY button on the remote there and it will play back all the videos in that folder. Pretty cool isn't it.I figure Samsung must have disabled the function to auto-play or playback any video files on disc thats a DivX file when selected, but they forgot to disable the ability to hit PLAY on the "..." folder itself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Does well for what it's intended for.
Works on DVD+R and DVD+R Dual layer. Will play out to the end of the disc where the bit rate can get pretty high and many players have trouble reading Dual Layer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I love this portable DVD player. It is small enough to carry it wherever you want and the quality is high. The sound is excellent and I think that it is one of the best DVD players you can buy for the moment. Of course I am interested in the new Sony DVD player as well. It is very promising.

4-0 out of 5 stars LS91 compared to LS90
Ihave a LS90. It works great. I bought LS91 as a spare. It lasted 1 day before developing a crack where the hinges are. Before I returned it, I tried all kinds of DVD with different formats. Some formats do not play on LS91, I guess that is why it's cheaper than LS90 although when you compare the specs from manufacturer, they are identical. It could be that the LS91 cuts corner on the quality of the product to make it cheaper (maybe that is why there was a crack developed after one day although the LS91 I got could be a lemon to start with).

5-0 out of 5 stars The best portable DVD player for your girlfriend
I bought this to use on my honeymoon. My fiance tried it out flying from the East Coast to the West Coast for her bachelorette party and totally loved it.The battery lasted for two movies easy, it was small, and the screen adjusts great for an airline seat.My fiance hates all my technology stuff but loves this DVD player and says she likes it more than me.Don't worry about complaints about the resolution - on a small screen it doesn't really make a difference - only on text when it first starts can you tell it isn't high resolution.I find that with it plugged in, turning the brightness to +5 and adjusting the color to +2 or 3 produces a great looking movie. Also this DVD player fits any type of format to the screen area as some others like the Toshiba SD-2800 do not.I also stopped by a Best Buy and it was the brightest richest colored screen on a sunny day in the store by far.

4-0 out of 5 stars great little dvd player
I think there are some unlucky people and some impatient people purchasing this unit.I sincerely could not believe how low the average score was for it.I wonder if some of the reviewers are getting their products used / already defective from dodgy sources online. It's amazing how many people still assume they are getting new product when it could be an auction for something that has been sitting in someone's garage.
1-0 out of 5 stars It can't get all the way through a decent rental disk
See my review of the Philips DVP642. I've owned both of these players, and they're both the same -- essentially useless for watching rental DVDs (that are confirmed to play just fine on other "cheap-o" DVD players like the APEX 1500).
1-0 out of 5 stars Bottom of the barrel
This player was to replace a 5 year old bottom of the line Toshiba player, primarily used for living room viewing (versus my home theatre/reference player). The five year old player out performs this brand new one on all levels.Motor noise is terrible. The display on the player is pathetic, only showing the chapter (what no title? No counter?).Not to mention that this player, touting progressive scan and coming with component out, is SET TO COMPOSITE OUT!You have to hook it up via composite outs in order to set it up to utilize the component out, otherwise you will get a blank screen.I have had this player for 45 mins and back it will go.If this is for your kids' room, I'm sure it will be fine.... unless your kid is older than 5 and knows the difference.AVOID. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars looks nice, sounds nice, easy to set up, and it's cheap!
What i like:
2-0 out of 5 stars For a rich, full surround sound experience buy a BOSE
Unfortunately I can't recommend this Sony product.3 speaker (2 satellites & 1 subwoofer) systems are designed to take up less space than the typical 5.1 home theater systems while still delivering a respectable surround sound experience. While the Sony DAV-X1 is compact in size, it does a surprisingly poor surround-sound imitation on all audio sources with the exception of DVD.Audio output from all other sources sounds flat and is sorely missing the rich, full texture that you expect from a quality audio system.Spend a few extra bucks and purchase a Bose 3.2.1 system, the Bose delivers much of the home theater performance of a conventional five-speaker system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Clear, and Powerful
Because I had little desire to wire my living room for surround sound (much less to convince my wife of the benefits of doing so), I researched 2.1 home theater systems to mate with my Hitachi plasma.
