2-0 out of 5 stars Too Hard to Use
We bought 4 radios to keep in touch while snow skiing. They replaced 4 older/cheaper radios that were 1/2 watt with no sub-codes.The Midland radios have the squelch unlock button right above the push-to-talk button. Both buttons are just little rubber-covered bumps on the side of the radio.A gloved finger can't tell the difference. We had to remove gloves to even use the radios because we couldn't tell when the button was pressed or which button we were pressing. An accidental double-click on the push-to-talk button activates the 3 second alert tone and shuts down all conversation.Three seconds is forever if it happens in the middle of your transmission.Half the time, we'd get only part of a transmission because the push-to-talk button wasn't getting pushed correctly.VERY FRUSTRATING!Remember that these were experienced radio users. We also found that any small hill between us would garble the reception.Friends who were with us were much happier with their 1/2 watt Motorolas. If I had my money back, I'd buy something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor reception and even poorer quality
I was very displeased with my Midland G-225 radios.I bought six G-225 radios so all of my hunting partners could stay in communication across a one square mile property.I chose Midland over Motorola brand radios because of the Midland's two watts of power compared to most Motorola two-way radios that are on one-half watt output.I assumed four times more power would increase communication distances. Was I ever wrong...Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For old times sake
The only gripe I have with this radio is that the lighting is not strong enough to read the stations. Otherwise it is a very good buy for the price. It lacks all the mod cons such as a remote control and the like but we have Bose for that. I have two Bose radios and frankly they do have a better sound than the Grundig. They are also much more expensive! I am very happy with both the Bose and the Grundig but there is something about the Grundig that reminds me of plays on the radio in the late fifties when the radio was an important part of life. Of course this Grundig does not have the sound of the Grundig I had in Germany. That one almost had a place at the dinner table such was its presence. Nothing is as we remember it. I am very glad to have this as a reminder of simpler and perhaps happier times. The times when the attention span was not determined by a remote control.

5-0 out of 5 stars Things to reflect upon about this product.......
I think there are TWO things to keep in mind when purchasing one of these:3-0 out of 5 stars Nice radio depending on how you use it
Hello everyone its Vince the radio man. I have been a buff and collector for many years and I love to do compares . Its was very interesting to see the great variation of ratings on this radio from you folks out there . As I read them I understood and related to all of them . Depending how you use this radio it good be a 1 or a 5 . It is an authentic looking "retro" radio that is pretty well made . The wood cabinet and the gold paint trim are done very nicely . The sound quality is typical of what a '50s radio sounded like ...not great bass nor high highs but a punchy mid-range . This radio does have some very good features and I have gotten unbelievable performance out of mine. First off ( and this will sound a little silly) it has a ground screw . Very valuable if you know how to properly ground a radio. This will greatly increase your reception on AM and SW . I have DXed Europe and Asia on AM!!! on this radio with a Terk AM advantage antenna and a nice ground . You must also connect an RCA cable to the Aux. inputs and complete the ground by connecting the cable to a receiver or tape deck that is plugged into the AC .True its analog , but you can get ( sometimes better) performance from and analog tuner that isn't weighed down with those overly clean filters that the digital radios have . It also has an aux. in to use the system from another source , nice . Yes , mostly its a show piece, but if used correctly and if you buy the newer model that has the built in fine tuning ...you'll be very surprised as to what this thing can do . Buy it if you are a collector or want something unique . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great ones
Shame to see this greatest of the great shortwave portable receivers discontinued from the Sony line like the venerable and magnificent ICF 2010.Most long time dedicated shortwave listeners will undoubtedly own one or both of these two great radios from the Sony of days gone by...Let's hope that Sony is avidly working on an even better successor, but somehow I doubt they can top this one...Since they are still available here and there, grab one while you can - if you are a short wave enthusiast, this radio is worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony SW77 - A great shortwave radio
This has been called the best of the current Sony Shortwave radios. Infact it may be the best of any manufacturer's portable shortwave. I have several radios, both desktop and portable. When compared to my other radios, this one has excellent sensitivty and selectability.I use it with a loop antenna as a bedside radio to find the distant AM stations at night. When I lock in the station with the synchronous feature it greatly improves the stability of the station and makes listening a lot easier. On SSB I am able to listen to Military and Ham broadcasts with no difficulty. It even has stereo on FM with a headset. I like the radio and I highly recommend it. Jim

5-0 out of 5 stars King of all radios !!!!
Hello folks its Vince the radioman . I have been a collector and buff for many years and love to do compares. This is the undisputed KING OF ALL RADIOS! It is miles above all the others in functionality , tuner sensativity and overall performance . However , it has a price to match . I know that this is an expensive radio so I take that into account when I rate all the others . But , if you can afford this priceGO FOR IT ! It has a 162 memory capacity , it has .1 kh increments ( thats point one) only found on professional equipment. It has a great sound and wonderful functionality ( great information window , timer , factory presets , editing capability ...etc.)And a spectacular side band set up .I love it! It is my main radio and Ihave approx. 50+ radios . If you can afford it , its the best and most complete radio out there . KING OF ALL RADIOS!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony ICF-SW07 -- HF pocket radio summary
I received my ICF-SW07 from Amazon.com just in time to assist with hurricane Katrina recovery in Louisiana in September 2005. I took it with me, and it performed very well. My ICF-SW07 came with an external amplified antenna along with the manual, earphones and a carry bag.
5-0 out of 5 stars Miniature Wonder -improvement over the SW100
Hello folks , its Vince the radio man with another review for you . I've been a radio buff for many years , I have a large collection and I love to do side by side compares . The Sony SW07 is the replacement model for the discontinued SW100 . In my review of the SW100 I knocked it abit because of the price and the overall sound quality from both the internal speaker and the headphones ( ...and no, I dont need a new pair of phones) .... the SW07 is an improvement in this area , however , still high priced . Both radios are wonders of the modern world ...so small yet so powerful and functional . The SW07 is a little larger than the SW100 ( thank goodness for those of us who have large hands and fingers ) and I find it to be a bit better in the dynamic range department . Tuner selectivity and sensativity about the same . The 07 and the 100 are sold as kits . The come with an active antenna . I find the antenna with the SW07 is far better than the 100 . Also , the SW07 is built much more durable than the SW100 . The layout and button functionality is easier to use and better thought out . Also , a much nicer, clearer visual display with a luminescent blue background .As far as other miniatures on the market ( Sangean ATS 606, which is much cheaper , is about the best after the SW07 and SW100 but not in the same class ) ...there are really no other competitors . If you're looking to spend a decent buck on a quality shortwave set and small is what you need , look no further . If you like a full size set and have a few more bucks to spend buy the SW77 ( which is the King of all radios!!!! ) ...if not the SW07 is surely the Prince.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony SW-07 receiver comparison
I have used, at one time or another, the earlier (1960's) Heathkit AR-3,(1980's)Radio Shack DX-400, the Sangean ATS-909 (Radio Shack DX-398), the Sony SW 7600G, the Grundig ETraveller VII, the Tecsun PL 550 and this radio. For the general user who does want to pay more than $1,000 for a professional receiver and wishes just to listen to foreign broadcasts and not bother with trying to tune in remote and low powered stations, all are excellent and comparable in sensitivity and selectivity. The SW-07 and SW 7600G offer synchronous tuning which somewhat aids intelligibility with reception that periodically fades and becomes distorted, but that provided in the SW07 is much quieter and more effective. The SW07 has more programmable station selections than any of the others except the Chinese produced and legended Tecsun. It has, as well, many convenience features that older Sony models and the other radios listed do not have such as pre-programmed time of day selected broadcast frequencies of a number of foreign broadcasters. The only truly portable decent shortwave radio that one can carry in a pocket, in my experience, is the Grundig which does quite well for its size with its short telescoping antenna. The Tecsun also offers distinctive features, such the ability to separate weak and strong stations that are close in frequency, which is often an advantage when listening in crowded shortwave bands.Reception on all radios benefits greatly from the use of a long wire antenna, but all radios, with the exception of the pocket Grundig, offer a compact substitute folding or roll-up antenna that, while not offering the performance of a outdoor wire, does better than their telescoping built in antennas in consistently bringing in European and South American stations. The Sangean and the Sonys provide single sideband tuning, which few foreign, but many amateur (ham), broadcasters use for voice transmission. And although amateur communications can be heard on all these radios, none of them have the selectivity necessary to qualify as an adequate ham receiver. ...
