1-0 out of 5 stars The new radio finally works properly
This is a terrible product.Had I seen the reviews now available, I would never have purchased it.The radio does nothing that it says it will do - except broadcast manually.None of the auto features work properly. The radio goes off with false alarms without any reason and in times of real weather warnings, it never goes off.I returned it for repairs 6 weeks ago and was told it would take 4-6 weeks.Today I was told it would take another 4-6 weeks. That means they don't have a clue on how to fix it.Save your money and don't buy First Alert products!
1-0 out of 5 stars First Alert Disappointment
This was my first weather radio purchase. Having recently moved to the Florida coast I figured it would be a good investment for storm preparedness. When selecting a product I relied on the First Alert name.
1-0 out of 5 stars Design Flaw - "Radio reception error"
This radio should be taken off the market. The other reviewers are absolutely right. It constantly alarms (usually in the middle of the night) with "Radio Reception Error" message yet there is nothing in the manual about this. Not a clue as to what the problem might be or how to reset or disable it. You have to unplug the device and remove the batteries to reset it and it comes back again within hours. The customer service was no help. All they said was that I would have to send the radio in to them to have it repaired. A brand new radio just out of the box? I don't think so. It is being returned to Amazon for a refund. Too bad, if I could have just turned that one alarm off or disabled it everything else about this radio worked great. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Product didn't last very long
I bought the Sangean ATS-404 for my wife for Christmas 2004. I found the sound output rather amazing for such a small package. AM reception wasn't great but adequate. FM was fine. SW left much to be desired. My wife was born and raised in Africa and I bought this radio with the idea she might pickup stations from South Africa or Kenya. We could get very few stations at all and none from Africa.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the casual listener - better radios out there for the $$
Hi folks its Vince the radioman . I have a large selection of radios and love to do compares and share my thoughts. This radio is good for the casual listener who doesn't want to spend a lot of money but would like to hear some SW along with AM/FM . The FM section is the best part of this radio .The AM section is filled with images and noise for the DXers out there . For local AM its pretty good. The built in sound and sound slection modes are surpisingly good. The overall construction and quality is fair at best and the radio is a battery hog . The SW section is fair. If you want to hear the big broadcasters , ok , anything else is static. There is no fine tuning . The YB300 and the Eton e 100 are far better for tuner sensativity and battery life. Its not a bad radio but others are better. How about 2 and half stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great radio for the money!
This radio is the best of its type for the money. The Sangean 505 gives you SSB and a nice fine-tuning knob, but it is considerably more expensive, and also quite a big larger. If all you want is a good, small, AM/FM, basic shortwave radio with a speaker and memory, you can't beat this.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Radio
It has absolutely no front end filters. All the noise existing around penetrates it. In the result, it receives noise, not signal. Strong chugging when you try to scan with the side tuning wheel.3-0 out of 5 stars Odd entry from Sony ...Not bad, nice tuner
Hello folks , its Vince the radioman . I have been a collector and buff for many years and I love to do compares . This is an odd radio . Its digital with an analog feel , not really . It has a very strange display window that is supposed to act like an analog dial . I findall the window data very hard to read. The radio's good points are that it is light weight and the Sony tuner is always the best part of the Sony radio product . The sound quality is only fair both from the built in speaker and the phones. There is no external antenna jack , for this price there should have been one. I find the controls a little overly sensative and the radio seems to have a mind of its own ( changes stations sometimes at will)....but , I will say again the tuner is very good . Buy it if you get a sale only!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with this radio
All I wanted was a radio with good reception, no need for headphones, and preset channels so that I could listen to NPR and the Red Sox game at work.To my surprise, this was pretty difficult to find - it seemed that therewas no happy medium between the lower end clock radio / walkmans and themini boomboxes with CD players, tape recorders, etc attached to them.AllI wanted was a radio that acted as nothing but a radio, but did it well.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Techman
I purchased this radio and charged it for two full days and got 10 minutes of listening pleasure. I called their 800 number to find out what was wrong. They indicated that I am supposed to charge it for 3 days (The booklet fails to mention how long to charge it yet has instructions in many different languages for your convenience). I did that, and enjoyed a full 75 minutes of play time. This was far from their 4 hours estimated play time. I returned it to the reseller and got another figuring it was a fluke. Charged it in great anticipation, and got about 70 minutes of play time for 3 days of charging. I called the 800 number again. Eton offered to replace it, but I had to pay for the shipping. I didn't think that was fair and tried to return it to the local reseller after my 30 days from the original sale was up. Luckilly the reseller took the radio back and refunded my money. Two bad radios just a fluke? Maybe so. But why penalize the the customer and ask him to eat the cost of shipping to fix Eton's problem? Plus the design is such that the bottom of the radio is rounded and the unit cannot stand up on its own. Eton said it is meant to be left in the electrical outlet. During a "blackout", I'd want it to be portable and set it just about anywhere. Go figure.

1-0 out of 5 stars Crap, just crap.
This is honestly the worst radio ever. The day I opened it I instantly noticed a horrible smell coming from the unit itself. It really smells like ass.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Performer
I have 2 other SW radios with a lower price than this one and the reception for each is much better. Disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPER radio!
This radio works great! It's compact and sturdy. It has a lot of nice features. The best one is the reception and digital tuning.I have a favorite station on FM that is difficult to receive. It's frequency is too close to a more powerful station. This radio can single out my favorite weaker station.I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality, small size, performs
I use this radio mostly for newstalk; especially late at night with earphones so it doesn't bother my spouse. I like the configuration for station presets, and the simple "sleep timer power-on arrangement" which makes this radio easy to operate in the dark. Nice backlight when needed too.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Can Have Only One Radio
Every house should have a Grundig S350 Deluxe. Big, brawny, "grabbing" in all the hard-to-get stations with ease, championing a big antenna that says this radio means serious business, the Grundig S350 Deluxe version, is a bigger, better version of the old Grundig S350. The speaker on the Deluxe is bigger and brighter. Whereas your fancy digital preset radios often sound like tin, the Grundig S350 DL has depth. Is it a perfect radio? No. You don't have presets in spite of the digital read-out. You get a little AM overload. Here in Los Angeles I get overload on 1150 so that I'm listening to two shows at once. Also the cheaper (and cheaper built) GE Superradio boasts an internal AM ferrite antenna twice the size and as a result gets slightly better AM.

1-0 out of 5 stars broke in two months
I was attracted to the features of this radio, but i should have listend to the reviews. The detchable face broke in a couple of months.

2-0 out of 5 stars Midland, Not Listening
I recently purchased a new 79-290, (August 05). I have not had the unit long enough to make an accurate review about it, because the face plate locking mechanism broke almost immediately. (About 45 min worth of listening time, plus one operation of the face plate.)This failure renders the unit completely useless, which is the whole idea behind a detachable face security, to prevent theft. However, the weakness of this particular part of the unit is a major problem. Apparently, this is not a new problem. After checking around, there are quite a few occurrances of this problem. One reveiw I read was in december several years ago. Midland is not "On The Air" on this design failure. There were other quirks I noticed also, which matched the same descriptions as the early december complaints. I guess I was mistaken that Midland's QC people would have proactively solved this problem by now, they have certainly had enough years of time. If their engineers are not capable of correcting this problem, then here's a solution: Make the locking swing arm, or what ever you call it, out of metal, instead of plastic. I have owned several detachable face radios, and none of them ever had problems with the face doc's. Yours is an example of what you don't do. I was impressed by the small size, it's overall set-up, front facing mic port. The unit does have some other little oddities that I would change, but it's very usable. But this thing with the face plate is full turn -off. Midland, "TURN ON YOUR EARS", This could be an excellent unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch out Galaxy and Cobra
This radio presents a real threat to the Cobra and Galaxy brands. I have worked on radios since the early 70s and have yet to find one of this quality at anywhere near this kind of price.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a very good radio.
I live about 40 miles from our NOAA broadcast station. For this radio to pick up thier broadcast, I have to hold the radio in my hands and face it South. Very often it puts out a growling noise that totally drowns out any broadcast that I may be trying to listen to. I've always been happy with Midland products, but they have themselves a lemon here. Spend your money on something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars WR10notformobilehomes
I purchased this WR 10 at Walmart's for $29.00. AM and FM reception is fine, but no weather reception at all inside a mobile home. I'll be returning mine, as I do live in a mobile home, too much metal I suppose. I tried in in every room and nothing!! But take it outside and it works fine.
