Editorial Review

If you're a shortwave radio enthusiast, you've probably heard of the E1XM from Etón. You've heard all the hype about how it's the first radio to combine AM, FM, shortwave, and XM satellite radio reception into one device. You've heard it's a major step up from the Satellit 800, the E1XM's worthy, but behemoth predecessor. Well, it's all true. The ten years of development that went into producing this tabletop radio was worth it; for a radio this size, the E1XM currently wears the crown when it comes to tuning accuracy, quality of reception, and features.

Features

  • First radio ever to combine AM, FM, shortwave, and XM Satellite Radio technology
  • Digitally synthesized PLL tuner with synchronous detector, passband tuning, and selectable bandwidth filters
  • Massive 240 x 320 pixel, dot matrix display
  • Programmable memory features 500 frequency entries, as well as 1200 user-definable country memories
  • Ready to accept an optional XM Connect and Play antenna for satellite radio reception

1-0 out of 5 stars Of course, something is always wrong with Eton/Grundig/Tecsun receivers !
NOTE: Watch out - the batteries blow up, when used with the AC adaptor !

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Radio -Well Made with lots of functionality, some flaws
Hi folks , I'm Vince the radioman . I have a large collection of radios and I love to do compares and share my thoughts . The long , long awaited E 1 ( Satellite 900) is finally here and I waited awhile to do this review so I really could explore this radio. Basically its wonderful but there are a few knocks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Battery Life? What battery life?
Nice enough if on sale, but rather compromised overall:
2-0 out of 5 stars Nifty but kind of cheap quality
Likely discontinued because I bought this on sale at Frys for only $4.99. It was worth that price.
3-0 out of 5 stars plug a problem
Like the idea and the digital radio is a nice touch. My biggest problem is the plug. When the unit is plugged into a wall outlet the top of the unit covers part of the outlet above. Thismakes it impossible to use a 3 prong device and nearly impossible to plug in a 2 prong device. So you are dedicating an entire outlet to this one device. Seems they should have figured that one out. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pocket Sw Radio from Sangean
For several years, this has been my favorite multiband pocket radio. It recently has been bumped from that position by the Kaito KA1102(see my review on the Kaito). Both receivers offer excellent AM FM and Shortwave performance, including STEREO to earphones.
1-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't What I Expected,
I got this radio November 9th, and am not pleased. The reception isn't that great, and the F.M. has too much override; where you hear the same station on adjacent frequencies. Unless it's a very strong station, you have to tune away from the nearby station to get anything. Sangean could've done better.
5-0 out of 5 stars very good receiver
After having one for 5 years, I have ordered another for a friend of mine. Compact, good sound, simple to use, I like it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Radio
This radio has a great sound and is nice and compact. A back-lit lcd and platic belt clip would have been nice. The tuning is a little touchy and jumps; however, the reception stays pretty much the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
Good radio. Picks up signals pretty good but the dial is very sensitive and their is no button to lock it so it stays off. But it picks up signals quite good. Please note they will send you a refurbished unit but you wouldn't know from the looks of it. Its just like new and at J&R this radio costs 40 bucks so overall, its a great deal.

2-0 out of 5 stars a bit dissapointing ...
For a Sony product in this price range the overall quality of the unit is very poor ... it's appearance is cheap and the performance of the tuner inside is indescribably poor as well I would not make the mistake of buying this product again

3-0 out of 5 stars A pricey little travel radio; good, but with caveats
I got this radio before spending a month in Germany in 1997. (I'm surprised to see it's still around.) Generally, it served me well. It sounds like a small radio, but when you're traveling, that's okay ... usually you want news/information, or just background music. It sounds to me like a quality transistor radio, maybe a bit better (but not much). The sound is very clear, however. The on/off/band control is a sliding switch that can be a nuisance to use. It's very stiff, and easy to slide past the point you want it at. Ditto the volume and tuning controls on the side ... they can take a lot of control to get where you want them to be. I bet that those with limited hand strength or use would find this a difficult radio to use. Sensitivity seems to be good. The clock/alarm clock portion worked fine, with one glaring exception: for some reason, mine keeps going blank, even though the battery is fine. I take out the battery, put it back in, and it works again ... for about a week. Then it's the same drill again. Once I even bought a new battery for the clock (the radio and clock use separate batteries) and it didn't change a thing. I've tried cleaning the contacts, testing the battery voltage, etc. I don't know what's causing it. At this point, I pretty much expect the display to be blank when I open the radio up. That pisses me off given what the radio cost. Otherwise, when all is well, the clock works fine, the alarm works fine, the green backlight is adequate enough for its purpose. The unit is remarkably compact, and makes a nice little package that can slip in a chest pocket. I agree that it is solidly built. I paid $100 for it in 1997 ... my wishes for this radio were (1) that it cost less, especially given its limitations, and (2) that the clock were more reliable (at least on mine). I don't know if there's anything else out on the market like the SW12. If there is, consider it; otherwise, you could certainly do worse than this radio. It lightens your wallet too much, but it won't do the same to your luggage.

2-0 out of 5 stars An Alarm Clock that also has Shortwave -not a "radio"
I've been a radio buff for many years have a large collection and love to do compares . This unit is an Alarm Clock , not truley a "radio" . And the alarm does NOT interact with the radio, its analog ,therefore it cannot turn the radio on as an alarm . Buzzer only! It does not have a DC adaptor jack . It must run on batteries only. It has an earphone jack .No FM Stereo. If you plug headphones in you will only hear it out of one side . Sony could have easily put a mono adaptor inline so you would hear it through both and should have for the price . The tuner like many Sony products has very good sensativity . But , the controls are so small you need the hands of a brain surgeon to fine tune it . If I was travelling and intended on DXing I would NOT depend on this alarm clock . If you want to listen to SW or DX the broadcast band , buy a real radio . If you want a travel alarm clock , buy one that interacts with the radio . At this price this unit is certainly NOT WORTH IT ! I give two stars instead of one because the tuner is pretty decent , however , pass it by ! ... Read more

If hearing broadcasts from around the world is your thing, the remanufactured E10 from Eton just might be the tool you're looking for. While the radio doesn't have the powerful features and reception of its big brother, the E1XM, the E10's scaled-down feature set and size make it simpler to operate and carry. The E10 has a few surprises, too, like an intermediate frequency (IF) set control, an antenna trimmer, and a bandwidth control--features you'd expect on a much larger tabletop unit. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Et0n E10
Batteries would not charge. I called Eton, a real person answered and conected me to a tech. He shipped me new batteries and they charged. This is my first of this type so I can't compare it. I am in a marginal AM area
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Item
When i purchased this radio i was sceptical. I turned out to be a great deal! I love this radio. Even my freinds like it! I have had no problems with the side knobs falling off, and i can't see what that fuss is about. Great radio and id recomend it to anyone! I have had hours of fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Radio
I purchased a remanufactured Eton E10. My first problem that I had was that the radio batteries or recharging system did not fuction. There was no way to recharge the batteries.I sent the radio back to Amazon and asked for a replacement only to have the knobs fall off as soon as the 2nd radio was taken out of the box. The moral of this review is, "You get what you pay for." 2nd radio is also beig sent back to Amazon. Save you self time and buy the Sony 7600GR. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First Class On Coach Fare
For most people, Coby isn't the first name that comes to mind when you think of bang-for-the-buck electronics, but if ever the company had the opportunity for a turning point, or at least a shining exception, the CX-CB12 could be it. Know ahead of time that this radio doesn't break any new ground in sensitivity or selectivity - it picks up the same AM and FM stations at the same strength as any other under-$50 radio you've ever used. That being said, this radio has some big advantages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
I bought this receiver one year ago. I use it to listen to KFI and CBS talk show every night in Los Angeles. It works great. I can't believe it got so low rate here. With this little expense and such high quality, I would like to rate it 5.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK except for FM performance
The Coby CX-CB12 portable radio is an analog multi-band radio that can be had for under $10.At this price you can't expect much, but the question is...is it worth spending any money on this radio?
