1-0 out of 5 stars Run the other way!
We purchased this product as a gift. We have never been able to get it to work. It does not recognize ink cartridges as installed when they are. The point of purchase (not Amazon) refuses to take it back because (on their recommendation) we removed the UPC code and sent it in for a mail-in rebate. Back to the point, this machine is utterly useless in the literal sense. It does not function at all, let alone "multi-function." If you do decide to buy this worthless item, be advised that the machine requires individual ink cartridges for black, cyan, magenta and yellow, and it will not print if even ONE of the cartridges is empty. Ah, yes. Very useful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable for Price - very good scanner & design
This is one of a series, based on the same print engine. The units range from a simple scanner/printer (this model), to others with fax and even auto collators. So, it's simply a matter of features to base your choice on.
3-0 out of 5 stars Exceedingly average
This is a product that tries to do too much. On the plus side are the price and the features. It is a flatbed scanner, printer, and color copier. One major feature is the memory card reader function, it will read secure digital, memory stick/memory stick pro, SSFD, and compact flash. One last feature, and it can be a major one, is the very compact size for such a full featured unit. I'ts not much larger than a typical Lexmark printer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Performer
The Epson 3190, a pick by the people at CNET, turns out to be a very solid performer for basic scanning. It takes a little over a half a minute to "warm up" once you flip the switch, but rewards you with attractive images. While capable of scanning slides, it's generally recognized that its forte lies in full-size images.
1-0 out of 5 stars 1 star if you use MAC OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
My 3170 worked beautifully with OS X 10.2.6 (including smart panel) Using it with 10.4.x is so klunky and so many functions do not work, I'm gonna trash it if I don't find a fix soon. At the moment it is essentially useless to me just taking up valuable desk space. Epson tech support sent me an email saying they do not officially support 10.4 but try.XYZ.it may work. I tried, it didn't.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best quality and features for occasional users
Picked one up for about three-quarters of a C-note (USD) at a Sam's Club location mid-2004 and couldn't really be more satisfied. The software/driver package is newbie-friendly while also allowing advanced users some freedom and the included negative holders work well, letting the 3170p turn 35mm and medium-format negatives into nice looking pics (even enlargements) with plenty of tweaking options.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed review for DocuMate 252
I have been using the DocuMate for two months, but it was in use for some time before I arrived at my company.I like the machine a lot and have considered calling my co-workers at my former place of business to recommend it.
1-0 out of 5 stars stay away from xerox
Bought this for a research project. Broke down after scanning just under 4,000 pages (it's supposed to scan 2,500 per day). No longer under warranty (2 mos. past), so Xerox refused to send another one. Xerox does not service it's own products or sell replacement parts. I've talked to a number of repair centers who say the documate is junk. So stay away from this product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Double-Sided but Half-Baked
This product fairly reeks of the "rush to release" syndrome. The instruction manual comes with several separate "Errata" sheets attached, correcting misinformation inadvertently printed in the manual. If you use this scanner, you can't have any drivers for any other Visioneer scanners on your computer, which is frankly ridiculous -- for a scanner that costs $1000, you'd think the software engineers could devise a driver that doesn't cause such problems, especially since many people own more than one scanner. What's worse, they're not kidding -- I uninstalled the Documate driver and returned the scanner for a refund, but I still can't get my other scanners to work, because the Documate software screwed them up. This scanner is way too much trouble for the money. I wish I'd never heard of it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Images, although slow and buggy
When I owned this scanner I thought the image quality was top noch. Colors were acurate. Details and sharpness were good.I was using on a Win98 machine. However, it was very slow and I kept having to reinstall the twain drivers because they would get corrupt causing green or black scans. It was much worse when I switched to WinME. Then when I upgraded to WinXP I just got rid of it. I have not been to happy with what I replaced it with, the Epson perfection 1660, so I'm currently looking for another scanner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than a 70's Clunker running on unleaded gas
I've had this "scanner" for about 3 years now.Let's put it this way:I had time to go watch an episode of Friends while this thing completed a 300dpi scan. It has given me nothing but trouble from the beginning, and the other reviews are correct in that there is no support for any new OS's (Win 2000, XP, etc.) short of purchasing new drivers from the manufacturer.Umax is a bunch of daft cretins if they actually think anyone will waste their money on such inferior support.I was fortunate enough to find a pirated copy of their updated drivers (it came from overseas and was in a different language) so I could use the scanner with XP.Surprisingly it worked but that didn't stop the errors and incredible slowness this machine is notorious for.I wish Amazon would add negative stars to their scale. 2-0 out of 5 stars UMAX Astra 1220P - Support Issue
Scanner works well with Windows 98.However, is now obsolete with Win-XP unless I purchase an updated driver from UMAX.I am not happy with this hidden cost. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A piece of Junk
If you purchase this scanner be prepared to spend a few hourstrying to load the driver and getting the computer to recognize the scanner, which it never will...ha, ha. The trip to Cyber Hades has only begun ...come join along.
1-0 out of 5 stars Crap, Crap, Crap!!!
There is no other way to put it. All Visioneers are garbage. Purchased my 2nd one (after first one died for no reason after a year) and have experienced many problems.Lately it won't let me scan anything because of an error saying to "unlock your scanner".There is no Freakin lock on the darn thing!!!After contacting the company many many times (btw - there customer service sucks! - No telephone number, unless u pay $2 per minute, just a computer-generated machine that unsuccessfully helps you called SARA). I finally put a claim in through the Better Busines Beaureau, there response was that they couldn't send me a new scanner cause it was after 1 year of my purchase, but they would be so kind enough as to let me purchase a new one and give me 25% off of their price (which was probably an elevated price). I told them to kiss off! Anyway - please don't buy this product or any Visioneer product - they Suk!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not REAL Bad, but...
I purchased this scanner for its ability to scan transparancies, and so far it seems to be doing the job. However, compared to my primary scanner (Lexmark X5150), I found using it as a stand-alone very confusing and finally started using it only through my PaintShop Pro 7.When it's in operation, it sounds as if it's grinding coffee, and there's now a very discernable (and growing) streak on the inside of the glass.I'd swap it out if it had been purchased locally, but for what it cost, I'm not going to bother, since it's already paid for itself over what it would have cost to have the transparencies scanned.

1-0 out of 5 stars Xerox 6400
The Xerox 6400 scanner comes with lots of software, including PaperPort SE for managing documents and ArcSoft Scrapbook Suite for editing photos and creating collages for scrapbooks. Unfortunately, the package is undermined by relatively low scan quality for the claimed 3,200-ppi resolution and 48-bit color depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic
I have tried both DR 2050C and DR2580C and they are both great scanners. The DR 2580C however has an edge over the DR2050C. It scans faster and better quality. The scanner takes up slightly more desk space that the 2050C but makes up in sheer versatility. You can scan documents to TIFF files and then combine them into a PDF document using the included Adobe Acrobat Standard or use the Adobe software to create PDF files directly from the scanner. The file size and clarity varies between the two approaches. I was also pleasantly surprised by the quality and accuracy of the included OCR software. ... Read more

This scanner will sacan for you once there will be about a 2% chance that the image is not covered with lines.after that windows will pop up and say that the USB device is not regonized and youll have to uninstall and reinstall the drivers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scanner at a GREAT price
I love my scanner. I got it last Christmas and have been using it non-stop without any problems ever since. I did have a little trouble hooking it up at first, but it turned out that I wasn't reading the directions as well as I should have been. So that was my fault, not theres. It is easy to operate and I love the programs that come with! They are great for picture making! Great product! Very happy that I got it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding scans of platen materials...
I have used this scanner for a little over a year now, and it really provides incredible results on printed and other opaque materials.Colors are very true (perhaps a slight warming on the color-temperature, as others have mentioned), and sharpness is fantastic. The scan-times were relatively slow, but an upgrade to a USB 2.0 card on my computer (cost me about $20) solved that problem.Scans times are very acceptable now.I have never had much use for the OCR software, but it seems intuitive enough and does a decent job.The rest of the software is not used much either (aside from the drivers, of course). My only beef: the transparency scanner is not what it was cracked up to be.The few negative scans I have made did not come out so well, and the reported competency of the integrated transparency scanner was one of the selling points for me.Maybe this is as good as it gets for a flatbed with an adaptor, but if you really want to get good results with transparencies, get a dedicated film scanner. ...
