1-0 out of 5 stars Worst scanner ever
The other reviewers basically summarize it all. I am going to return it. After complaining to the company about some problems their reply was: "You are right, these are known problems, no solution yet". Every new model gets worse. They have a great idea for a product but simply don't get it. Total idiots.

1-0 out of 5 stars Design flaw acknowledged but no remedy offered !!!
DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER. I have owned six Strobe scanners over the years with satisfactory performance until now.
2-0 out of 5 stars Hard to use
I found this scanner difficult to use, especially trying to line up the paper to feed through the scanner. The software is poorly designed and organized. There is no on-off button and no light to let you know if the scanner is on.It is stupid beyond belief to not have an on-off switch or at least a light to indicate the status. As to the software, what were they thinking?Badly designed hardware, badly designed software, what was I thinking? (Actually, it was made by Visioneer so I thought it would be pretty well designed--I won't make that mistake again.I really wonder if when a company releases a bad product they ever consider what effect it has on the company's reputation.Obviously, Visioneer does not and I'd say that reflects the poor leadership of the top person in the company.) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great!
I bought this scanner used for ... some odd dallors through a market place seller here at amazon, I had never heard of the visioneer company before and asked family, freinds, and local computer store experts about it, no one had heard of the company before and urged me not to take the chance and get a reliable brand. well, I had my heart set on this one but i looked up scanners from epson and hp and cannon and found comments from previous buyers saying how "____ went wrong as soon as i got it", and "it's a peice of junk" etc. so I decided to take my chances with this scanner, It arrived a few days later and I was surprised how easy it was to install, there are only two cords, one is permanently attatched to the scanner and hooks into the usb port on your computer, and the other was a plug in cord that hooks into your wall socket, and the other end goes into the only hole in the back of the scanner, then you just put in the software (though you really should do that first) push install, restart your computer and *poof* you have a scanner! I didn't know what to expect in qualityso i was presently surprised when my scans turned out better than my mom's scans on her [more expensive] scanner! it basically kicked her scanner's butt! I am so pleased with this scanner, and the software that comes with it and I urge EVERYONE who has the chance to do so to buy this scanner!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as easy as I thought! But a good buy.
Reading the Amazon's editorial review on this scanner I thought it would be a breeze to work with. But anything involving computers I should of figured would be a difficult endeavor. Visioneer 5600 is good and will take a few hours too get the bugs out. The directions are some what confusing since I'm having trouble figuring out how to get the right resolutions . The USB connection on my Pentium III processor is located in the front and the adapter cord is too short to reach from the back, as well as the plug-in cord ( so I'll have to invest in longer cords). The software is great and has been helpful. The size is perfect for my roll top and the smoky blue blends in well. I think in time my Visioneer 5600 will be a great buy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Visoneer 4400 USB
I am a web developer and bought this scanner a few years ago ... when I was new to the computing world. The scanner works great if... 1-0 out of 5 stars No drivers for my OS and is not going to be...
I'll have to dispose it soon. It is completely unsuitable for my Linux desktop and I've given up to find its drivers. The manufacturer neither provides a driver nor disclose tech spec to let others to write it. In short words: don't buy it for whatever OS except Windoze. (Well, 1 star can be earned for at least working under MS-OSes).

3-0 out of 5 stars Short Cables!
I agree with most of the positive reviews that this scanner is fairly easy to use and adequate for amateur use. But good grief, the USB cable is about 3 feet long and the power cord maybe 4 feet, forcing me to keep the scanner on prime desktop real estate. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great hardware, horrible support
I have used PaperPort/Visioneer scanners for close to a decade, and loved them all.For some reason, though, their code gets worse and worse and their "support" simply does not exist. 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SCANNER
I FIRST STARTED USING VISIONEER PRODUCTS IN 1996.THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF VISIONEER'S SUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS TO PRODUCE LOW COST GOOD LOOKING SCANNERS THAT TAKE UP LITTLE ROOM AND ARE EASY TO USE.THIS MACHINE WORKS WONDERFULLY, AND IS CLEARLY COMPATIBLE WITH ADOBE AND WORD PERFECT.IF YOU ARE USING THIS FOR YOUR LAW PRACTICE SPEND THE EXTRA DOUGH ON THE XP450.THE FEDERAL COURTS ARE GOING PAPERLESS AND THIS IS THE TOOL TO KEEP UP.
2-0 out of 5 stars XP 450 Constantly loses Connection
I use this in a law office/buiness setting with an IBM laptop running Windows 2000.The problem is if I do not scan something for about an hour, the scanner loses its connection and you have to turn it off and back on to get it to scan.A royal pain in the you now what since the power button is on the back.I called Visioneer support and they said "That is the way it works - if you do not use it it loses connection."I think that is BS.My HP did not. If someone else has problem and a fix, let me know.Otherwise, our office just nixed buying 50 more of these since I was the test case. ... Read more

This scanner is great!!I cannot say enough good about it.I have had mine for over two years now and I take it with me everywhere my laptop goes including courthouses where I use it to copy marriages and other court documents for genealogy. No power cord needed and is every bit as good as any of my larger HP ones stuck at home.

1-0 out of 5 stars A HORRIBLE Scanner with Windows 2000 Professional
Since buying this nice looking piece when it first came out, I have actually NEVER had it working properly under Windows 2000.It has limped along, and at times I have found ways to work around it's consistently inconsistent behavior. When it works, as one reviewer said, it is a rather nice scanner to use BUT that is the trick.... get it to function first.Every so often, after a relatively smooth spell, I get the error saying that it is unable to find or open the TWAIN source. To this problem, there seems to be NO definite solution.I am a tweaker.... everything IS installed properly and up to date. The Canon website is NO HELP.I'll un-install and re-install, as recommended, and will get the same error for hours on end, more re-installs, USB re-installs, all related software un/re-installed, registry cleaning, etc... NOTHING works! Some time ago, while still under warranty, Canon tech support, having exhausted all possibilities, decided it was a "rare flawed hardware" problem.... so they sent me a new N1220U scanner in exchange... ha! I got the same errors with the new one until it finally worked after more tedious tweakings by me... alone. How it was resolved is still a mystery to me.It worked OK, for a little while... about a year.It scanned well that is until, as is the case now... I simply have to walk away. The dreaded TWAIN error has appeared out of nowhere again and I am simply tired of trying to fix it.I will NEVER again buy another Canon product out of principle.I will gladly throw this piece of junk away after crushing it in my bare hands later on this week.5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, easy to store
I thoroughly researched scanners before I selected the CanoScan N122OU. Several brands and models included the high resolution output which I need for my photography hobby work, but the deciding factors for this model for me were:Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Really Good Scanner for about 18 months
For a while, this 2480 was a really good scanner and buy for light usage. Now after 18 months of ownership, there are cloudy markings on the underside of the glass from 2 to 4 inches in that makes that part of the glass unusable.

My 6 year old trusty Umax scanner was starting to show its age, so i looked for a new scanner that had good reviews. The Epson Perfection 2480 seemed to be one of the best rated.
5-0 out of 5 stars Epson2480 Photo Scanner
This is my 3 or 4th scanner and based on the review that I purchased it, it is the best of all that I have used. It outclassed Visioneer (from Office Max). No problems with the software, no nagging for registration on each re-installation, but I have not had to re-install.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality-Poor Service Support
Purchased a new Artixscan 1800f last January. I suspect that it was defective, since I had problems with the lamps from the beginning. Due to my very intense work schedule, I was unable to arrange for warranty service until last week. Microtek would not honor the warranty but wanted $400 to swap the unit for a refurbished one. Granted they would pay shipping, but, honestly, is it worth the price and is this the kind of service consideration one expects from a so-called "high-end" company. I am buying a new Epson in hopes that they will provide some latitude and discretionary consideration for this kind of expensive equipment.

1-0 out of 5 stars A horrible experience
Our company purchased the Artixscan 1800F for $1500 a little over a year ago.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice scans--but a persistent problem with my 1800F
Bought my Microtek 1800F from Mac Zone last year for $1400 and got a $200,00 rebate some months later. I intented to use it for scanning 4x5 color transparencies and larger format B&W negative film. Scanning color 4x5's result in good detail and color, with data reaching 150+ MB.Black and white negatives are so sharp as to clearly show grain in fine-grained 4x5 negative film (whenresults are examined on screen at very high magnification).

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the worst scanner. I bought this scanner for my office use and when it arrived DEAD out of the box. I then contact Microtek and they thought it was a bad power adapter - 2 power adapters later still NOT working. I finally said to replace my scanner. Sent it back - Microtek gave me a new scanner and that arrived dead too! WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER!!!!! Instead purchase a cheaper Scanjet 5590 - I dont see why people dont like them - at least you can expect to come right out of the box and WORK.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great scanner
This scanner is one of the best scanners out there for this kind of price. Not only was it easy to set up, it is super fast and reliable.I usually scan 10-20 page documents, just black and white and have it save in PDF format. It takes about 2-3 minutes to do a 20 page document. There are so many other features I haven't even look in to.Definitely two thumbs up!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Scanner I have ever used
This scanner is horrible. It jams constantly when using the ADF. The OCR software they have included is useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Does a whole lot for the price!
This scanner offersa wide range of functions for $299. It does a very acceptable job with photos, after scanning about 250 documents, I have had no paper jams. The duplexing is great for two sided scans, however ther is some bleed throgh when scanning with the adf when there is print on both sides. I solved this problem by choosing the option to scan to word and then using the picture toolbar to brighten.
1-0 out of 5 stars DONT BUY THIS SCANNER
Constant jamming, especially in duplex mode, very difficult to get the paper out of the machine once it jams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and Easy to Use
I have owned this scanner and never had trouble with it.It was easy to install and it was a fast scanner. It was user friendly, small, lightweight and works with pc or mac machines.I would still be using it if it wasn't for the fact I was given an all-in-one printer. I honestly don't have anything bad to say.

2-0 out of 5 stars Guess what problem I had........Yep, Bulb burnout!!!
I basically bought the Microtek scanmaker 3600 b/c it was slim, looked good and was fairly inexpensive campared to others.I enjoyed it while it was scanning (of course I don't know a lot about computers, etc.)However, It only worked for just a few months before the bulb burnt out. Imagine that! I also got the red low glow (???). Like others, I found it hard to get to the on/off switch. And of course as said before, the only way to get it fixed was to mail the scanner back to them at my cost.Well forget that.I bought a new scanner and it definitely was not a Microtek.Microtek is not worth the time, trouble and added stress. Thanks for reading. ironjaw

2-0 out of 5 stars short bulb life
The scanner worked fine for the first month. Then I accidentally left the power on for a week, and the bulb burned out. Not completely, but the light is no longer bright white, but rather a dim neon red and all scans are so dim and noisy as to be unusable. I guess the bulb can't be replaced. What do you expect for [the price], I guess. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The CanoScan FB620U seems barely bigger than the documents it scans. However, this little machine is packed with power--it makes high-quality scans of graphics, photos, line art, or text, and offers great imaging and optical character recognition (OCR) software for an incredibly low price.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars works fine on Windows XP
I wanted to let everyone know this machine works fine with Windows XP. Canon has updated the drivers and they are easy to download from the Canon site and come with detailed instructions. After loading with Windows XP drivers, this machine was scanning in documents just fine using Adobe 6.0. The machine is made for Windows 98 so is selling very inexpensively used, particularly on ebay where I got mine for under $15.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first scanner
Easy hookup to my PC-Pentium II processor.Easy setup, except for severalattempts to complete the registration via modem--finally skipped throughthat and did the registration online. After that, I was quickly on my way, scanning my first photo in minutes.I felt it did a great job.I emailedmy photos and response from my friends on the quality were very positive.Excellent choice for first-time scanner purchasers.4-0 out of 5 stars Corporate user scanning 30 to 60 documents a day
We currently have one Canoscan FB620U in use and have ordered another onebecause of the flexibility and quality that it has offered. The scanning isa little slow going for high defintion but works great for scanningdocuments. The thing we appreciate the most is being able to control thesize of the scanned item. This allows us to maintain more records on a harddrive than what other scanners have allowed us. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very solid scanner
I recently purchased my HP scanner from an online discount house. Unfortunately, the scanner arrived without software or a printed User Manual. However, rather than get upset, I decided to assemble the scanner (which took 1 minute). I then went to the HP website and immediately found and downloaded the software & device drivers. After installation, I attahed the USB cable, plugged in the power cord and, after a few seconds I was scanning documents at blazing speed. I was even more impressed because I am using a rather outdated PC running Windows XP with 512M RAM. Yet the scanner runs flawlessly, and the document feeder NEVER jams - which a very important consideration. I am thrilled with this HP product. The software could be a bit more user friendly, so I will only give it 4 stars.
1-0 out of 5 stars Pittiful OS X Support
When is HP going to figure out that this is not 1998 and the Mac platform is not dying, and in fact growing faster than the rest of the industry.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good, solid product, but . . .
Don't believe HP's claim that the 8290 is "network ready". I was disappointed to learn, after I purchased mine, that the scanner cannot be accessed over our network, because our operating system is not NT4. If you use Win98, Win2000, or WinXP, forget the network feature.Read more
