3-0 out of 5 stars This rating is either a 1 or 4, depending upon the slide condition.
I have been scanning some older family slides with the PS3600 and have found that slides must be in very good condition. If not, the slide will jam and that is where the problems start. It appears that there was absolutely no thought in the design of the PS3600 as to how to remove jammed slides. There is little to no room to get any type of tool in to help remove jammed slides. Any jammed slide is usually damaged worst in the removal process. I bought a slide remounting kit the day after the first jam. The jamming issue is why I contemplated a 1 rating.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good scanner....so far
I have scanned over 300 slides to this point with only 2 jams and have hundreds (if not thousands) to go! My slides are from the 1960s to present and vary in condition. The 2 jams I've had were not, in my opinion, the machine's fault as the cardboard was beginning to separate on these slides. I found it difficult to remove the jam.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good quality and value but not perfect
I agree with most of the review of Eriamjh, and I also rate this scanner 4 out of 5.The strengths of this scanner are 1. It can scan up to 50 slides unattended, 2. The price is reasonable for a 50 slide automatic feed scanner, 3. The scan resolution is relatively high at 3600 dpi, and 4. It is packaged with Photoshop Elements 2 for editing your scans (and you will need to edit).I purchased the scanner a month ago and have now scanned about 1500 slides from 1970 to 1995 in both card board and plastic mounts. All of my slides were in near-new condition, yet I found that the older cardboard mountedslides tended to jam occasionally in the scanner due to cardboard separation. The scanner could have been designed better to circumvent this problem. Also, undoing a jam was not always easy; occasionally the scan stopped because of a "communication error" between my PC and the scanner; and about half the time, after a completed scan of slides, the system would not do another scan without turning off both the scanner and the software (and sometimes rebooting the computer).

2-0 out of 5 stars Good when it works
I've owned two predecessors to this scanner - but they are about the same. The ADF on the first gave up during the warranty period and Visioneer replaced it.The second one (the whole scaner)gave up about a year outside the warranty period, so it's a goner. It's a fairly servicable scanner for the price (when it works), although it really only allows you to feed about 5 to 7 documents at a time.I like the Paperport software.Although there is better OCR software available, the Paperport is versatile, easy to use, and generally gets the job done.

2-0 out of 5 stars Make Sure Laserfcihe is included
I undertstand that this is a fine scanner if you can get the right software. What I found is that this version from Amazon does not include the Lasefiche software. I sent the first one back and received a second one- still without the Laserfiche software.Amazon needs to change this ad to reflect that they do not send Laserfiche software with the scanner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Crappy Software
BEWARE of using this if you are trying to scan to PDF - especially if you use PaperPort software. The pdfs show up with a documate watermark on them indicating that it is a trial version.GOOD LUCK getting it off...tried the ScanSoft support - they know it is an issue but their 'fix' doesn't work and you'll have to pay $40 if you want to talk to someone.Still have not figured this out. Also, pages scan at 25pp per minute once they start going through - the wait time at the start is long (even if you don't use the energy saving mode).

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm underwhelmed with the Epson 2580
I run a graphics studio, and use a scanner several times a day for photos, printed material, even small items such as jewelry that require some depth of field from the scanner.Because we have so much dedicated software that runs native in OS9, we're holding out on the Big Upgrade to OSX as long as we can. Last year I researched a new scanner to buy while we still had a choice of OS9 driver scanners, finally selecting an HP Scanjet 4400c. This was a joy to use, with friendly software, all the options we required, and good scans. Then it started producing banded images, and to make a long story short, this is a defect of some HP scanners, there is no fix, and HP goes out of its way not to help. So here we were in Dec 2005, frantically looking for a new scanner with Mac OS9 drivers.
4-0 out of 5 stars What a Great Scanner
I was scanning in 35mm with my HP 5530 which HP so notabable disctontinued 2 weeks after my purchase.Worked great until I ran across a project with my Aunt who handed me well over 2000+ negatives. It wasn't something I really wanted to do, but 30+ years of negatives was exciting. Some big memories have emerged.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great scanner for the price
I have had this scanner for eight months and have had no problems. The soft ware was easy to install and is very user friendly. This is my fourth scanner in nine years and I find I like it the best of them all. The first two broke down immediately after the warranties were up and would cost more to fix than replace. That is saying something because one was over $300.The third was good, but not like this one. I really like being able to do more with the pictures than crop or remove redeye. It is so easy to resize them and have them remain clear. If you are scanning for personal use, this is a good choice and I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars gray scale
I have had my scanner for over three years and it really saves me a lot of time. But I do wish that their was a customer service line to help with problems that are not available.5-0 out of 5 stars Visioneer is the easiest to use of all scanners I've tried!
Everything is relative. I see other reviews stating difficulties with software and support. I cannot vouche for their support because I have never needed it. I've found the software to be pretty straight forward and actually quite simple. Of course I had to mess around with it a little to get the hang of it like anything else. When you get it all set up, the one touch buttons make a quick fax or copy simple as pie (not pi). The image quality is excellent and it works great with Photoshop too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Problems with Visioneer
I had technical problems with my Visioneer scanner and severe problems with their customer service department - everything from a 17-21 minute hold on the phone before getting a human to a 3-month (so far) wait for a replacement machine. Visioneer refuses to refund money because my customer service problems have gone on longer than 30 days and because I didn't purchase the machine through their website. Take great care in purchasing a Visioneer product. Dealing with Customer Service can be stressful and totally unrewarding - no money, no machine. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice scanner, but useless after upgrading computers
I have had this scanner for a couple of years and I loved it with my old Windows 98 computer and my Mac OS 9.0 laptop. Then I bought a Mac Mini with OS 10x. I have had compatibility nightmares ever since.
3-0 out of 5 stars worked great until the glass broke
I had this scanner for a couple years. I thought it worked really good. I used it mainly for scanning pictures, and they were very sharp. Then one day the glass shattered into hundreds of tiny pieces with no apparent explaination.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly made
I have no complaints about the quality of the scans. But after about a year and a half, the pulley mechanism came loose from the floor of the unit.I opened it up and I can see that the pulley, which has considerable tension, is held down by two tiny, thin plastic tabs.It is easy for them to break, and once one does, there is no way to secure the pulley bracket in place.I can just see them saying that these flimsy tabs are going to last as long as the warranty period and then the consumer has to buy another unit.Unbelievably poor workmanship.I think this model is no longer in production, but if it's any indication of what current Epson products are like, beware.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best line of scanners on the market! been using Epson for 5+ years. love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Scanner That Does A Lot Of Things
I love this scanner!I got it over a year ago and it is still working strong.I got it for the ADF feature.I use the ADF with Acrobat Writer.Very rarely does the ADF jam and when it does its due mostly to user error. When it does jam it does not eat the paper and its easy to correct. The software that comes with it is simple to use.Make sure your computer has loads of memory if you plan on scanning anything over 600dpi.Ive also used this to archive photos taken on the job and it does a great job at that.I dont suggest buying this scanner if your main requirement is film or slides. For that you should get a dedicated machine.Ive used with USB and SCSI.SCSI is faster but usually I dont notice the difference unless Im scanning over 600 dpi.The only bad thing I can say about this machine is that it can be noise.Good luck.

1-0 out of 5 stars Expected better from HP
Very noisy & slow scanner.1-0 out of 5 stars A very poor scanner; Very noisy and Poor photo scan quality

1-0 out of 5 stars What doesn't work
This scanner does not connect to Windows 2000 server or 2003 server. They don't tell you that anywhere (at least I couldn't find it). They do tell you the minimum OS requirements (which server isn't listed) but when they say "minimum" what they actually mean is "only".

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast scanner, but cumbersome to use
I have been using this scanner for several months to scan my statements, bills and misc documents at home.I had to stop using my old reliable Visioneer MX scanner because it doesn't support windows xp.The main reason why I chose this scanner over the cheaper EOX2 model was that this comes with a TWAIN driver. With that driver, I am able integrate scanning with Paperport 9.For home use, I think it is a MUST to use Paperport management software (preferably version 9 over 10 based on other reviews).

The card reading ability of the device is worse than the rational customer might expect. The error rate I experienced was around 35%.I had scanned 30 cards, wasting time correcting data, and then the program crashed. In OSX.I hardly ever see a program crash. But here's the kicker: it didn't save the work at any point. In fact, there was no save funtion I could find easily, just export.I returned it right away, and ordered the CardScan Executive, which I run under Windows XP in Boot Camp. While it costs twice as much, its error rate is much more forgivable, at about 10%, with about 25% perfect scans/reads so far.Plus, the automatic saving and free online card data storage and synching are beyond my expectations. You get what you pay for. ...
