Bulletproof DVD Burner
Do you want bulletproof DVD recordings EVERY time?Are you tired of your finicky, $90 clock-radio-corder that routinely generates a trashcan full of failed DVDs on a monthly basis? Do you cling to the false hope that your cheap-corder company will issue a firmware upgrade to cure your woes?Isn't your time more valuable than that? Spend an extra $50 and go with Pioneer.I've owned several Pioneer products including the classic DV-525 DVD player that's now six years old.My 220S has the same brilliant DVD playback quality that I've come to admire with my older Pioneer DVD player.Many people are disappointed when they buy the cheap DVD recorders because those units have only mediocre playback picture quality, too few inputs (for recording from multiple sources), and flakey DVD recordings.Pioneer builds their recorders right the FIRST time and you won't be working out their bugs and wondering if your next recording will fail.I chose the 220S after I found it to be one of the highest user-rated recorders in many forums including videohelp.com.Multiple video inputs/outputs on 220S put other recorders to shame.Take the cover off this unit and you'll see the beefy power supply board and quiet fan that means this one's built to last.No cheapy clock radio power supplies like in the sub-$100 recorders.When I hit "record" on the 220S I always get a perfect burn, no questions asked.Just read the owner's manual, feed it a decent blank disc, and be done!
I still feel like an early adopter
I finally bit the bullet and bought a DVD recorder.Everyone is a DVD recorder expert and with competing formats, +R and -R, everyone has an opinion.My opinion is that if it's -R, it works on every DVD player in the house and the new portable in the car (the old audiovox portable barely played regular DVD so it naturally choked on DVD-R (which is the pioneer uses to burn.)So the first task has been to copy our ancient VCR collection to DVD.Easy enough, but certain titles (Sixteen Candles and Field of Dreams for example) are copy protected and unable to burn.As far as good news, it's got several rca (red/white/yellow) inputs, so I have my Directv DVR in one and my old panasonic VCR in the other.Copying from DVR is a breeze as well.Complaints are it took me a while to figure out how to wire it up and the remote seems overly complicated.

Very Good but...
This review is actually of the DVR-225s, which I believe is identical to the 220. I recently purchased the new Panasonic DMR-ES10S & returned it because of the flimsy jack panel. I replaced it with the Pioneer DVR-225s.

Easy to use, great device
This device is so neat and easy to use. I have a subcription to Rhapsody and recently thought about cancelling it. I own a Creative Zen Jukebox 40gb and an Ipod 30gb and neither of these work with the rhapsody to go service. However, after hooking up my Roku, I will be keeping the service after all. My husband is the big computer nerd in the house and I don't know too much about them myself. I got tired of waiting for him to hook up the Roku, so I did it myself. It took me all of 10 minutes (most of that online trying to retrieve my NetGear key). Now I am rocking away. Anything I can think to listen to, I just download it from Rhapsody in seconds. If this thing ever wears out, I will not hesitate to go buy a new one. Thanks Roku.

Could have been great . . .
Unfortunately the warantee and the life expectancy appear to be about a month apart. There is no repair - just throw it away and get another - per Roku customer service. Mine had a "hardware failure" at the 13 month point so I'll be trying an alternative product. On the positive side, if you have a compatible wireless router and don't mind restarting it once a month or so (not really a big deal since a recent software release) it was fine. Not the device for the audiophile but not bad.Look around on the Roku support forum before you buy.

I found the Roku M1001 pretty easy to setup, and had connected to my iTunes library in less than 10 minutes.

Dish dvr 510
I've just upgraded one of my 301 receivers for this 510 so I can get dvr.This dvr has a feature called live record which is similar to what the Xm skyfi 2 has.It automatically records the minute you cut the receiver on.You can pause and pick up where you left off or rewind to the beginning.It will record for over an hour and then start writing over.Also this dvr has a harddrive which will let you record over 100 hours of shows,movies etc.You can record several ways.My favorite is to go to the guide and just click on a future show and you're all set.Incidently this guide goes a week out about 9 days.The 301's guide goes 2 or 3 days a big difference.There is also a menu to let you edit your recordings,name them and even erase them.It also lets you know how many hours you have left on the harddrive.I checked the recording and you can't even tell a difference in the live picture and the recorded one.The recorded one looks the same as the live one and the sound is the same too.It isn't dimminished thru recording.Previously I use a dvd recorder to record from dish.The picture quality on the dvd recorder was diminished slightly and I had to cut the sound up a lot.Not so with this dvr.The only thing I don't like about the 510 is it gets hot even when it's off for a lot of hours.My 301 is cool to the touch when it is off for a few hours.
Other Review Not Entirely Correct
Every Channel is allotted 6 megahertz in which they can broadcast channels.If broadcasting in analog (many channels still are, but it's being phased out) it takes all 6 to output video and basic stereo sound.Now, if a channel switches over to digital broadcasting as opposed to analog, they suddenly have room in their 6 megahertz to provide dolby 5.1 sound and high definition picture.Now this receiver won't give you High Definition picture under any circumstances, but the dolby sound will work if the channel provides it.That's what it really comes down to, the provider.If a channel provides enhanced sound format, dish will broadcast it, but dish does not have any say in the matter.
much better than tivo
i had dish dvr for two years, and it was awesome.it was so easy, fast, and you always got what you wanted to tape.when i got tivo, i was frustrated as i could be.they tape things that you don't want them to tape, and it takes minutes just to rewind an thirty second show, whereas dish literally takes 4-5 seconds.also, in dish it takes you 10 seconds to tape a show from a week from now, whereas tivo takes several minutes to tape a show from just two days from now.buy dish over tivo... best decision of your life ... "My review also extends to Dish Networks service...I just have one question...why do the new customers always get the better deals and the current cusotmers get shafted with upgrades, specials, rates...everything, so they think that once we are customers we're in their web and they don't need to keep us happy...I am sure Direct TV would be more than happy to satisfy any and all Dish Network customers that feel the same way! dishnetwork customer 5 years ... i bought a 921 receiver for 545 $ sept2005.............. i have had to RETURNit 4 times sincethen ............ ALLthe stantard def programs i recorded were wiped off the hard drive plus ALL the high def programs i recorded ...........nba fans that means kobe s 81 point game , the all star game ..which was in high def this feb 2006 for the 1st time .....i was never told i could have got a full refund within the1st30 days of buying the 921 ... each time hard drive broke , customer service just said we will ups you another 921 ...upgrade to 622 ? forget it .im going to switch to direct tv !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Great product, but even better support.
I got mine directly from Olive, and I must say the best thing so far is their customer service & support team. Not many companies take their time to explain product features in detail, and even less usually care to take the time once you bought the product. The only complicated issue about this product is to connect it to your home network, but the guys at Olive did an excellent job to walk me through. Otherwise the Musica is perfect, especially the sound quality. Two massive thumbs up!

A bit buggy at the beginning, now very nice.
I bought the Musica shortly after I read the positive review it received from the NY Times.At the beginning the Musica had some software issues (stalls, freezes etc.), but Olive solved most of the issues in the latest software update and the Musica is now a rock-solid digital music player (with excellent sound). After the first weeks I probably would not have recommended it, but now I can.

Still working great after almost 5 years
I bought my SVR-3000 in late 2001 or early 2002, and it's been working perfectly the whole time.It's been to 5 states with me, been hooked up to more antennas, cable and satellite systems than I can remember, and works perfectly with the USB wifi adaptor I got for it.
Worked well, then kaput
I was happy with my sony until it stopped working after nearly 2 years.I didn't want to pay more money to fix the unit plus the additional 15/month for tivo.I ended up renting a dvr from my cable company.The dvr can record 2 programs simulatneously.There is a 9.95/month fee and no hardware costs.I think tivo will have to rethink its services because I can't think of a reason to go back.

The problem is with the TIVO service
I previously reviewed this at 5 stars, but there is a huge problem due to the fact that this is a sony unit and tivo software.Read more
