2-0 out of 5 stars Service Difficulties lead me to recommend Replay over Tivo.
DVR's are great.I have 3 -- 2 Replays and a Tivo.I highly recommend them over VCR's for all the reasons you read in all the reviews. They also work quite well with few glitches, so I hadn't had much chance to test their tech support, until recently.5-0 out of 5 stars Changes your life - but you need more capacity
There is no way you'll watch TV the same way you did before you get this - you watch what you want, when you want. No more waiting until 10 PM to see something - you just watch it the next night at 8:30, even while another show you like is on. Its pretty amazing.1-0 out of 5 stars TiVo is self destructing.
I have enjoyed my Tivo for 2 years now. Bascially, we can no longer live without it. However, as a company, Tivo is absolutely horrible. Where to start? My Tivo started to experience problems with video/audio synch lately. I called customer support and received suggestions for a fix, all of which I had tried. They were nice enough. Then I find out, to exchange my unit for a new one, it will cost $149.00 for parts and labor. Shipping is additional. OK. How about letting me save everyone the trouble and purchase a Tivo II (for much more money) and keep my current lifetime subscription? Seeing as how I was an early adopter/evangelist, etc? Uhh, no. Oh, and by the way, after you pay for repairs, they're only warrantied for 30 DAYS! Then, if you have further trouble, you're SOL again. I ask if there's a supervisor, or anyone available who's interested in keeping a good customer? Uhh, no. Well, I guess I can just buy Replay or Ultimate TV then? Uhh, yeah. I don't take the time to write online opinions or letters very often, but the policies and behavior of Tivo are so frustatingly bad, I just had to. Next on my list is the CEO. If they keep this up, he'll be next in the bread line. To sum up, the company I previously raved about will never see another dime from me. (or any of my valuable programming data) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
I originally bought this about six years ago, and it worked well. Then I moved and didn't set it up again until a few months ago.I was surprised to see how future-proof the system was.It was able to recognize my new digital cable service and download the appropriate channel guide. The remote is difficult to use at first, but with a little practice it can be mastered.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry I had to give it one star
The replay unit is Wonderful! However, I would never buy it again and will avoid all Panasonic products in the future. If the romote dies, you can no longer use the unit. There are no replacement remotes available and the company does not repair them. This ranks right up there with buying a new car because of a flat tire.JUST DON'T BUY THIS!

5-0 out of 5 stars Replay all the way
I just love my Replay! No monthly service fee, but the coolest feature is the truly remote control -- myreplaytv.com.You can program your recorder from any computer with an internet connection!!!Plus Replay integrates programing from satellite sources with ant/cable sources. That means just one remote lets you choose all your channels without turning off the satellite and tuning the tv.I have a Tivo too. It's ok, but it doesn't record network (at least my model wouldn't).For me, it's REPLAY ALL THE WAY! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory but too slow.
This DVR works ok.But when it is recording, forget about changing channels. It is really really slow and takes like forever to even receive any remote clicks.
3-0 out of 5 stars Can't compete with cable company hardware...
I enjoyed this unit while I had it, but it broke within 6 months and Tivo was not particularly helpful in replacing it.As a result, I have switched to the DVR offered by my cable company.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely The best thing ever
I have owned this tivo since march and I have not had 1 problem. The 80 hours is MORE than enough recording time. Everyone in my family uses this and loves it. The difference between tivo and other dvr's is the software. It is so much better. You can schedule recording anywhere where there is internet access and you can transfer shows from your tivo to your laptop or handheld device. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars problems but I love it.
I own a pioneer DVR-633H-s and whenever I play a dvd, in the begining before the movie starts the player hangs and you can't work any buttons the player is locked up.The only way to restart it is to unplug the device while it is running and plug it back in. Then still you can't fast forward thru the advertisements.
4-0 out of 5 stars Does what it need to....
I have owned this DVR for over a year now, and it has done exactly what I needed:transferring old VHS to DVD and fairly simple TV recordings.Yes, I have encountered the same TV Guide issues as many other owners, but have found that ignoring it works fine.Just hold down the timer button for a few seconds and you get a screen where you can setup a recording manually (it takes 30 seconds). Now, if you are a TV fanatic, I can see where you may not be able to tolerate the annoying TVG, but if you are looking for a machine to transfer old VHS and do basic recording, it is just fine.I have to say that I am glad they are removing the TVG and would never want it again!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great unit, but VERY unreliable.
I have owned this model since March 2005.Almost all of the time the TV Guide hasn't worked (I have heard this might be a ploy by my cable company to push people to their DVDRs).At any rate I gave up on this feature.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works great
It is terrifying reading the reviews on here, but there are no problems with mine (other than the TV guide silliness).
4-0 out of 5 stars My Panasonic DMR-E95H is a winner!
Recordings on DVD seemed like a smart step forward from my trusty but tired JVC Editing deck, which still works fine after some 5 years of daily use. Panasonic E95H looked great with plenty space on the hard disc and loads of features. I studied user reviews(mostly horror stories users were experiencing)but I took a chance when venders were selling for less than half price.(Paid $399. delivered, from J&R.) WOW! WHAT A MACHINE! All that I try works great.I have copied about 50 tapes to DVD-R, even copied a few high rated rental movies, put three TV movie broadway shows on a single DVD-R disc (over 6 hours!), about 100 TV great movies, even FM Stereo broadcasts. No problems ever. I pray that I stay lucky. Hours of back and forth with the manual, but I had the same problem when I first got my editing VCR. I have not tried all the features available on this machine, but everyting I tried so far works fine (with the help of the not so great manual which infernally bounces one from page to page, inasmuch as this piece has tremendous brains and capability.) A close lightening hit "crashed" it once but it just rebooted and continued what it was doing without losing anything in memory or the hard disc. In over half a century of buying high end gear, this has been the best deal & the most fun and satisfying. Great pictures & decent digital sound. WOW! WHAT A MACHINE! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun
Akimbo's not the greatest, granted. But it does allow access to programming not normally available to the regular television viewer. Akimbo's cool because you get original programming and favorites from top tv networks, plusthe service continues to improve. If on-demand is the future of television, this is a sneak-peak.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too little, too late...
The Akimbo media player allows you to watch on your TV content that you choose and download from their servers over your broadband connection, for $10/month (or a $200 lifetime subscription). Interesting idea, but obviously what makes it or breaks it is the availability of interesting or exclusive content. Unfortunately, as many reviewers have pointed out, Akimbo is not delivering in this area.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not a user, but very interested.
O.K., I don't own an Akimbo...yet.I currently use Real Player to watch British TV on Demand (BBC and Channel 4 news). The quality isn't there on Real Player.Quite frankly the technology is new and real player often doesn't provide the content I want in that BBC news broadcasts don't repeat when they are finished. I receive the BBC 10 O'Clock news after it has finished with a screen saying the program is over.Channel 4 News is also by story. Hey, the early pioneers of satellite TV can tell you the same thing (I remember a friend proudly showing me a realtime broadcast of a cricket match that would never have been shown on ESPN). Maybe the content isn't there yet (I've told Akimbo about BBC news and some other internet services),but they could get some great stuff. And the pictures on broadband broadcasts can be pretty good.I'm all for it if someone can give me the content I want when I want it in a manner that compliments my high def TV. Cable just doesn't cut it and neither does Satellite. This just may be the technology I want to meet my needs. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy Sharp products
My machine won't turn on after 10 monthes use which is still under warranty. The customer service told me that I will only pay $45 labor fee to repair the machine but end up I got a $249 bill. I called back to the customer service and they put me on hold for half an hour. When I finally got another person to help me, she said she will find someone else to help me then she put me back to the main selection menu. What kind of customer service is that?

1-0 out of 5 stars Quickly broke down and customer service a nightmare
Our DV-HR300U broke down within the first month of use as the event timer went out on us and the recording function basically stopped. Sharp's Customer Service suggested resetting the machine, and when that failed had us send it in. Well, that set off a six-month ordeal of first being told the machine would be repaired, then being promised a refund, only to have the machine show up at the front door. Unfortunately, the repaired machine now would not only not record, it wouldn't even play back commercial DVDs. So back to Sharp it went, and finally, after numerous unanswered messages, a veiled accusation that we'd never paid for the unit in the first place, eliciting a veiled hint that perhaps small claims court would be a solution, we received a refund. This was the last Sharp product I'll ever buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst experience ever!
After using this unit for a month the hard drive just quit recording!

5-0 out of 5 stars It does not microwave your dinner or walk your dog either...
The people who have had problems with this item do not seem to realize what it is they bought. It is a one tuner DVR.It can only record one thing at a time, like your former VCR.What it can do let you pause a program or rewind a program you are watching, going to any previous point in the show from the first time you were on the channel recording it.It will allow you to record one program while you are watching something you have recorded previously. It has varying quality levels, Basic, Medium, High or Best quality, which means that the Best quality takes up more space than Basic.I use any number of different USB WiFi adapters for updates through my wireless routers. The only people with problems are the people who do not know what the y are doing or have unrealistic expectations for the product they bought. It is a great video player.Get a two tuner one if you like to record two different programs at once.I have three Tivo units and two HDTV DirecTV units, with one of the Tivo units with a DirecTv unit hooked up to the Slingbox.Season Passes allow you to record only new episodes of programs if you choose, skipping reruns for you.It will also let you set it up to record an old movie you are looking for using a Wishlist. It has other qualities, too.I can send a program from one of the Tivo units over the wireless broadband to another unit or my laptop computer for Tivo to Go.((DirecTV Tivo units do not do the wireless tricks, but the ones I have from DirecTV are HD while the regular Tivo units are not.))

2-0 out of 5 stars It's what TIVO does not tell you that makes it a bad product
I ordered this TIVO for wife's birthday. Here's what happened:Hooked the TIVO up and connected it to our phone.Spent a long time trying and trying to get it through its setup calls, contacted TIVO and was on hold a long while, WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU is that you need an analog phone line (Not voice-over IP).We don't have a regular old phone line, so the only thing we could do is go to the neighbor's.The TIVO got its initial data, then needed to sit for 4 hours to process the data. The TIVO technician told me to have the TIVO box make another call to upgrade its firmware. This could not be done until AFTER the 4 hour data processing (which they did not tell me).So I went back to the neighbor's house the next day and had the box call TIVO again and update the firmware. The new firmware could not be used until the box reset itself and it needed to wait until 2 AM to do this.On day 3 I finished the TIVO box setup and brought it back to my house. It would not work because the neighbor's cable was not the same as ours. After another call to TIVO they said that I would need to get my TIVO hooked to my computer network and repeat some of the setup. And, incidentally they don't bother to include any kind of network adaptor with the TIVO box.I downloaded the list of TIVO compatible wireless network adaptors and checked in COMPUSA, Best Buy, Radio Shack and Target.Interestingly enough TIVO seems to have forgotten to mention that you can't really find the network adaptors except at their website (so another 4 hours blown).Everything thus far with the TIVO box has been a really unpleasant experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have 2 TIVO's in house.They work Superbly
Have had TIVO for nearly 4 years now, and they are great! They have lead the way for all other DVR's in the business.Customers need to understand that TIVO DOES NOT make the machines. They are the "inside the box" programming. I have a Sony and a Philips TIVO and they perform without problems. The lifetime machine subscription have also been problem free.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good system, user friendliness may improve
Good system with a great sound quality. The CD/DVD is flexible with regards to US/European DVD formats. Altogether lots of features, but along with that lots and lots of wires.

Editorial Review

ReplayTV's 3020 server provides up to 20 hours of storage space and offers a host of upgrades, including an advanced programmable remote control with a ReplayZones button that makes it very easy to find the shows you want to record. In fact, it's almost too easy. Once we grew accustomed to recording shows in advance, we found ourselves watching three times as much TV as we had in the past.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars don't buy any ReplayTV products
I bought the replaytv 60 hr unit and have had nothing but problems for 7 months. The first unit had a problem with the modem. It would connect to the server only once in a great while. The next 4 (that's right 4 replacement units that replayTV sent) all skipped. I should say they skipped and froze up to be acurate. The last unit not only skipped but also rebooted itself every half hour or so. I am currently waiting for the next unit(these were all different units with different serial numbers not my same unit repaired) but I have given up hope of ever having a working unit. The fact that 5 different units have had problems shows the widespread unreliability of the ReplayTV hardware. When replaytv works it is great but this got to be the worst electronics device I have ever had as far as reliability and I have had quite a few. The first unit I had worked great other than the modem problem. It recorded everything and was a joy to use. The only problem is that if the modem does not work then the on screen tv listings are not updated and you eventually can't record the shows you want. The other units they sent have just been horrible and the last unit with the rebooting was the worst. I am very technically oriented and after countless hours with their tech support each time it was determined that it was hardware/software defects. Replaytv has tried to get the problems resolved but 5 replaytv units not working is just too much. What ever you do...don't buy ANY ReplayTV products or you will get to know their tech. support people very well. Remember, if I have had a problem with 5 different units than the likelyhood that you will have a problem is probably pretty good no matter which model you buy. If you want a DVR then look at Tvio; they can't be worse than RepalyTV. I don't own Tivo but if I had it to do over again....I guess the $... a month doesn't seem so much now. I spent $... shipping it back the first few times before I got ReplayTV to pay shipping each way on later units. Stay away from anything ReplayTV.
