1-0 out of 5 stars It broke after 3 months
I bought this receiver in May 2006 (made in China....).
5-0 out of 5 stars Good budget receiver
The Teac AG-790A is a great budget receiver. It being used in my office, attach to 4 ceiling speakers. The sound is decent for the office use.The loud button increase the bass response in low volume. The binding post allows for banana plugs, so it's easy to connect to the speakers.I also hooked another set of Polk Audio M30 speakers. There's a speaker A and B switch. So now I can also enjoy music in my private office too.Overall, it's a good bang for the bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stereo receiver at a low price.
This is my first Teac unit ever, and it replaced a vintage Pioneer receiver that granted me twenty-eight years of faithful service.I am quite pleased with this "old-fashioned" two channel receiver. It sounds great, is solid-feeling, and is easy to operate.Although I was somewhat wary to purchase a unit without the many "turning knobs" an old codger like me is accustomed to, the push-buttons on this model are easy to use and find even in the dark.I'm pleased to have a receiver with a remote and a sleep timer function.I doubt that this Teac (or any new-fangled receiver) will offer me twenty-eight years of service but I don't plan to be around that long anyway. ... Home theater may be the rage, but there's no getting around the need for affordable, high-quality music playback, and Sony's STR-DE197 stereo receiver can be a huge help in that department. The integrated amplifier pumps out 100 watts per channel across both its 2 channels and uses discrete output transistors--that is, transistors in place of cheaper and lower-quality integrated-circuit chips--to ensure high-quality music presentations.Read more

Features

  • 2-channel integrated amplifier/receiver with 100 watts per channel
  • Discrete output transistors offer better fidelity than receivers using conventional integrated circuits
  • 20 FM and 10 AM radio station presets; includes universal remote control
  • 1 switched AC power output conserves wall sockets and conveniently powers up an additional component simultaneously
  • Measures 16.9 x 5.2 x 11.9 inches (W x H x D)

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor FM stereo
The first unit couldn't even find FM stereo stations. It had similar FM specs as the Sony ST_JX410 AM/FM Tuner it was replacing. It was returned as a faulty unit. The replacement STRDE 197 was able to find stereo FM stations which played fine in monoral but were noisy in stereo. My 25 year old JX410 tuner did an excellent job on FM stereo stations. The second unit was returned for a refund. Sony's quality isn't what it use to be. I bought an Onkyo TX-SR304. The FM works fine with more features & expandability.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only one thing missing.....
Sound is good, controls are good, easy to hook up.I have been an avid Pioneer Audio user, but I'm getting over it now, since Pioneer products seem to be getting more and more shabby. The only thing I would add to the Sony STRDE197 is the ability to scan stations with the remote control. You can't tune with the remote unless you have stations preset. Not a big deal, but it would be handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Use your head
Some of the complaints concerning this item are valid, but it is clear to me that others did not do their research!

Not everyone wants or needs a 5.1-channel receiver, which is where this HK3480 two-channel receiver from Harman Kardon comes into play. This ultra-high-bandwidth, 240-watt unit is perfect for fans of jazz, classical, or rock, as its powerful features bring out both the bombast and the nuance of your favorite music. The technology gives the listener the sensation of sitting in a concert hall or theater without requiring a surround sound setup.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An orphan that needs a good home...
Let's face it: stereo is on the way out. Multi-channel surround sound is in. But all I wanted was stereo. Sure, I could have bought a multi-channel unit and used it only as stereo. But I am glad that I bought this Harmon Kardon stereo receiver. I am not an "audiophile" and will not try to impress you with words like "imaging" and "soundstage". Plainly and simply, this receiver sounds wonderful to me. Besides, with so many other variables involved in the reproduction of recorded sound (speakers, environment, the recorded material, ears), how could you really trust a negative review about how it sounds anyway? ...even from an "audiophile"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of features for the money
For the money, this has several great features. The sound really surprised me for such a small unit. If there is still not enough bass for you, there is a subwoofer output to plug into. It has aux. input to hook the TV to so you can watch the game or race with a little more than just the tiny TV speakers.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, beware of player noise
Sound quality is excellent, ton of features (plays almost every music format there is, not to mention DVDs), compact and aesthetically pleasing. However, the unit itself is very noisy during disc play. A loud high pitch whirring noise from the CD motor can be heard over low to medium volumes. You'd have to pretty much set to high volumes when playing music or movies if you want to drown out any of the noise coming from the CD unit. If you can live with the noise, this is a good buy, nothing else compares when it comes to the available features. But beware, the inability of the unit to control disc noise may be why it's so affordable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing little system
I have a large 100 watt stereo setup that consists of five JVC components and two pairs of speakers. I bought this system as something I could play easily when I wasn't doing "serious" listening.

4-0 out of 5 stars A genuine bargain
A good buy for the price. I live in a very rural area so the unit required an external self-powered FM antenna and a wire AM antenna, both of which I already had installed. Any radio used here requires external antennas. Reception by this unit is very good. Sound quality is excellent for attached CD and tape players. Simultaneously drives two big old Bic Studio Monitor speakers, and two utility speakers in another room, with fine quality distorion free sound. No problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Was I disappointed!
I read the reviews and figured this receiver would fit my needs. What I didn't expect was to have to take it to a repair center as soon as I got it to fix the loud hum from the speakers. That was today and they estimate that it will be three weeks before I get it back. I wish I had never bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars No tape monitor feature
It has been 15 years since I last shopped for a stereo receiver, and back then there were certain features that all receivers came with, regardless of how basic or inexpensive the model was.Well, I took for granted that they all still came with these basic features, and I was wrong.I just purchased the Sherwood RX-4105, and it does not have the tape monitoring feature. It has tape input and output jacks, but it doesn't have the monitoring feature that lets you listen to the tape deck's output while you are recording. If you press the tape button, the receiver switches away from the input source you are trying to record from! The tape monitor function is also necessary for the use of an equalizer. It baffles me that they are still giving you tape in and out jacks, but don't give you the proper switching for monitoring.I guess they figured they could save a few pennies by leaving out this function, since the demand for tape decks has declined in recent years.Unfortunately, there are those of us who still like to use an EQ to customize the sound to our environment, even if we are no longer recording on tape.I have found it difficult to verify whether or not a receiver has this function, since the specs and features list usually never mentions it.If they have a good picture of the unit, you can look to see if there is a button that says "tape monitor."Just looking for tape in and out jacks will not help, because as I mentioned above, the RX-4105 has these jacks, but no monitor function. Then there are some models that have monitoring even though the switch only says "tape."The best way to know for sure is to try out the unit first, but this is not practical when shopping online.I have even gone so far as to go to the manufacturer's website and download the instruction manual. If the section on tape connections and recording doesn't mention "monitoring," it probably doesn't have it.Also, many models no longer have phono input, but this is easy to check just by looking at a good picture of the unit. The RX-4105 also lacks an auxillary AC jack on the back of the unit; not a big deal, but a consideration if you have an outlet strip already filled up by other components. Another thing I noted that is worth mentioning is that many newer models such as this one have volume control knobs that do not have any position indicators or scale markings on them; so be sure to turn down the volume before you turn off the unit, or you could be in for a surprise when you turn it back on again!

Editorial Review

In the fast-paced world of home entertainment technology, change has become an understated word. Technologies now change so quickly that the new becomes yesterday’s product before you barely become accustomed to it. Perhaps it’s time to refocus on what’s really important for quality audio: first-rate sound with high power output. Forget about over-hyped processing technologies. If your receiver lacks the fundamental amplifier design from the power supply through to the output stage, everything else is superfluous. The TX-8522 is built with this in mind. Incorporating Onkyo’s proprietary Wide Range Amplifier Design (WRAT) with an isolated power transformer and discrete output stage, the TX-8522 is focused on maintaining the purity of music, radio and video sources. Also, with the option to take up XM® Satellite Radio or to connect your iPod® to the system, the TX-8522 gives you the versatility for a sweeping range of entertainment options. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Wattage Rating
For the person who said that this is a 100 watt amp, it isn't - at least not using normal measuring practices. Power is normally rated for 8 Ohm loads, for which this receiver is rated at 65 watts, not 100 watts. Any receiver roughly doubles its power rating when the Ohm rating is halved. It's deceptive on Onkyo's part tout this as a 100 watt receiver by measuring it with a four ohm load.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, high-powered stereo receiver
The fad today is for multi-channel audio/video receivers. But most people stiill listen to music with just two speakers and, consequently, only need a good stereo receiver. In fact, a sound stereo system featuring a good stereo receiver, such as this Onkyo, and an excellent pair of speakers will sound better than a typical multi-channel system which usually features several mediocre speakers. Unless you can afford a good multi-channel receiver and several good speakers you will get better sound by sticking with good stereo equipment. The Onkyo TX-8522 is a very good stereo receiver with a wide range of inputs and controls, including a remote control. With 100 watts per channel power it is capable of driving virtually any speakers to deafening levels (which is NOT good for your ears) even if you are inclined to apply significant bass boost. Although the TX-8522 is very reasonably priced, if you would prefer a less expensive receiver, consider the 50 watts per channel Onkyo TX-8211. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars BELOW WAY OFF BASE!
Yes, Ill admit this is not the strongest receiver at the gym but What's written below shows no understanding of amplifier power, specs, or the ability to " do the job".Unless you play movies and Cd's at literally eardrum splitting volume the Panasonic has all the power you'll ever need in a home theater setting with " average" speakers. To say that the receiver cuts out at 40hz is just plain ignorant.I will admit that the specs are a result of the marketing director pushing for " 100 watts per channel", but this receiver does put out a clean 60 watts of 20-20-000hz of power.
3-0 out of 5 stars What you'd expect.....
I had been powering my Polk rti-12 and rti-10 loudspeakers with 2 biamped SA-HE75 receivers for about a year, until I got my HK AVR-240s. Over that year I encountered no real problems, other than the lack of power.(Hence the biamping) I don't recommend this Panasonic for anything larger than very small floorstanding speakers with only mid/high frequency requirements. Bookshelf speakers or satellites would be perfectly fine.(There's a subwoofer-out anyway)

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for the money
I have an 8 year old Marantz reciever- and although this does not have the power of that reciever, for the money this ONKYO offers excellent sound and quality. It offers basic features for old audiophiles like myself, without breaking the bank. Very recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for simple 2.0 or 2.1 sound
I picked the Onkyo TX-8011 up to replace an old 25w/channel JVC I'd used for years. I wanted the remote and a little more power for my Mission 70 bookshelf speakers in the bedroom. The Onkyo's sound is crisp and precise, which is to my liking. The phono jack gives me the option of hooking up my turntable if I feel inspired to play any vinyl. The Mission's 5" woofers weren't putting out bass to my liking, so I hooked up a Yamaha YST-SW215 150w powered sub woofer to top off the system (note that the Onkyo TX-8011 does not have a sub woofer output, so you'll need to buy a sub like the Yamaha that has a speaker line input if you choose to go the sub woofer route.) Bottom line: The Onkyo combined with the Mission bookshelf speakers and the Yamaha sub-woofer provide suberb sound, and I got the whole thing wired in about 15-20 minutes. It's a lot more than I ever thought I'd use in the bedroom (it's hooked up to the TV and DVD player), but find myself popping CD's into the DVD player just to listen to the great blend of trebles, mids and lows from this powerful little system. The 50w/channel Onkyo delivers great sound for a bedroom or apartment, as long as you are OK with staying with two channels. While I chose to add a sub woofer, I think the Onkyo could have driven larger speakers with 8" woofers quite satisfactorily. Strongly recommended, as is the Yamaha sub-woofer as an add-on if you are using bookshelf speakers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Onkyo TX-8011, Great low-end stereo receiver
I don't have a room that can be easily set up for surround sound, so stereo is adequate for me. I wanted a relatively simple stereo receiver with remote to replace my 23-year-old MCS unit.

Editorial Review

Denon's multiroom-capable DRA-685 AM/FM stereo receiver is engineered to serve as the heart of a 2-channel music system while providing high-fidelity sound and composite-video switching for stereo video sources such as DVD players, digital video recorders, digital satellite systems, cable boxes, and VCRs. Delivering 100 watts per channel x 2 into 8-ohm speakers (from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with no more than .05 percent total harmonic distortion), the DRA-685 provides separates-class audio performance. High-speed, wideband, discrete power transistors provide delicacy and impact, making them well suited to high-quality analog and digital sources.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Caution getting into Denon because of parts availability
As a caveat to prospective shoppers of what is one of the high end and costlier brands.Denon had me on a merry chase to get a remote control for an audio product. They have outsourced the parts department to Hermann's in Florida."Sorry sir, your item is discontinued, you would need to buy the whole receiver to get the compatible remote for your deck." Huh? This has a baloney flavor to me that I really do not like. Their HQ didnt seem to know much, frankly. My suggestion is to check out the high end models from Pioneer, Sony and JVC. They make accessories and parts avaiable directly and easily from the company. And no baloney. This is a competitive market and there are goodies aplenty such as inputs and outputs and circuitry goodies to shop for. (Unless the cachet factor is vital to you. In which event, good luck and don't forget the B and W speakers from UK.) Good luck and aloha. Gerry

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine piece of high quality audio hardware.
I had actually been searching for a different piece of Denon audio hardware when I ran across this rather new Amazon listing for the Denon DRA-685 receiver, which has been a key component in my "main" audio system for nearly two years now. It is certainly a "keeper," and a receiver whose capabilties and features one can "grow into" over time. A few of the features are quite unique, and I have yet to exploit them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good receiver with (currently) rare features!
This receiver has a mechanical on/off switch and a (short 3 day ??) memory on settings. The remote will also turn the unit to 'standby' if the front switch is left "on". The other controls are tactile, but will hold settings if unit is unplugged / reconnected. It is now unusual for a receiver to be controlled (on/off) by terminating the power to it, without losing the previous settings. This was important to my application. It also has a 'loudness' control which is strangely absent on the new receivers. I will not own a receiver without a loudness function!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Receiver, does run hot, but you'll love this unit
It does run hot, with only side vents, none on the top, but the smaller package is the likely culprit.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good product with some flaws
I was initially very wary of purchasing this receiver.I had heard alot of bad things online about the JVC line, and had it not been for the price, I probably would have stayed away. That would have been a mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME, but ugh
Great features, awesome sound, even with their "virtual surround back" feature when not having the back surround(s) installed.
3-0 out of 5 stars Ventilate
This is a great receiver...but watch out, it needs to be well ventilated.Mine blew up after 31 days in an admittedly poorly ventilated entertainment center. The main problem is that the exhaust vents on the receiver are on the sides and it is a pretty wide peice of equipment so there is not a lot of room to breath in your average enclosed entertainment center.I'm also still waiting for the thing to be repaired because apparently JVC has no parts and everything is on back-order (its been 31 days since I dropped it off for repair).

Ideal for audiophiles who like to build their systems piece by piece, the Teac TR-670 offers precise, high-end AM/FM tuning so you can enjoy your favorite programs static-free. 3-0 out of 5 stars Fills a market niche for an affordable, user-friendly tuner
Per comments in the other review on this tuner, no, the tuner market hasn't disappeared, it's just fragmemented. The trend towards home theater has really hit the stereo component market, pretty much killing the low and middle end sections of it (the high end audio market is still going strong, with plenty of tuners in the $500+ range available).
