Nice, inexpensive home theater component
I purchased this from a B&M electronic retailer last week and used it to replace an older Pioneer receiver that only had Pro-Logic capabilities. The Pro-Logic surround was so limited that I had even taken down my rear-channel speakers since they did so little.
Poor in all respect
The only good thing about this purchase was the super fast shipping (maybe they want to get rid of it ASAP) It was not late when I realized WHAT HAVE I GOT AND WHY DID I. Man trust me I have a Denon AVR 600 5.1 and there is absolutely NO COMPARISON between the two. I returned it in hours.. Ended up paying 20$ out of pocket for the shipping. The LED display looks cheap and so does the remote and the rear connectors are a pain in the ... It doesn't power all your speakers equally and there is ABSOLUTELY NO DEPTH in the sound. I would highly recommend you to stay away from it. I have learnt it the hard way. Better throw in some more and get what truly is AN UPGRADE.
Amazing value for the price!
Pioneer has created a wonderful low-end surround amp for cheapskates like me since I had to ask dad for the money.It has so many good features I will simply not list them because there's no room to type them all!

AWEFUL TO LEARN, USE AND KEEP COOL
I had a Pioneer DVD 5-Disc home theater system and wanted a receiver to hook this and other A/V stuff(playstation, X-box, DVD, computer) to. I only used it with the DVD/CD player. It has all the right hook ups. The problem is this thing always overheats. After 30 minutes of use it goes into stand-by. The controls are hard to figure out to get sound to all 5 speakers and the Sub-woofer. It feels solid but can't keep itself cool there is no cooling fan in the system just wide vents that if you look through you see the big heat sink. The cabinet will still get warm to the touch and shuts down though. ... Read more

This Thing Rocks!!!!In my Humble Opinion
Let me start by saying this is my first post or opion on any site ever so please bare with me.

Second ONKYO receiver. Bought a 747 in 1998 when it was close to top of the line. It took 7 years for it to become outdated.
Avoid this receiver!!
Hooked it all up, no sound from anything other than the front right or center channel, irregardless of the source. Read the manual and had to setup a lot of features to configure the receiver. Still No output for dolby digital, only front right and center. Display indicated PCM and PLII and I confirmed the source of audio was from DVD digital output. I call it D.O.A.!

When I received this amp all the video and audio inputs except the s-video and optical audio didn't work. It is still in the repair shop, I took it in two days after I got it.

Great Receiver- Great Price!!
I bought this receiver in May when the right channel on my 1977 Luxman R-1050 went out, the left channel still works good and i saved it for future use with only 2 speakers, but you can't have surround sound with only 2 speakers. My JVC was perfect out of the box, and still is. It has not presented to me one problem at all. It has impressive surround sound, I have always counted on JVC. I have it hooked up to a Samsung Tv, a n Audiovox DVD player, Emerson 5 speaker sp200 system, a Sony Xplod 1200w subwoofer, and a Volfenhag amplifier for the sub. I only wish they had provided a better FM antenna.

A low cost unit, but has its share of bugs
I bought the system after an initial wariness of the product with earlier reviews. I have a lot of experience in home electronics and enjoy setting things up, so the installation was a snap and the modification of the digital inputs was a piece of cake, although frankly I'm more impressed with the analog inputs than the digital, but that could very well be the other electronics in my stereo cabinet.

This company and its product is the worst
Very, very disappointed with this product.I live in Florida, and to this day, I cannot get the home receiver/boom box to receive any signal, unless I go outside.Even in my office, which has an open bay window facing west (which is the exposure the company suggests for Florida), the product is unable to acquire a signal.The car kit works fine.When I called the company to complain, they could offer no advice at all, told me to put the antenna outside, which is very impractical at home, when my air conditioner is on, and impossible at my office, where my windows do not open.DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!! ... Great simple receiver that delivers great sound
I've tried few japanese brands before I ended up with the Harman Kardon's HK3270 Receiver. At first, I thought 35Watts/Channel was too little, but these are real 35 Watts RMS, not High power Watts like advertised by japanese brands. It is as much if not more powerful than any 100W Jap amplifier on the market. I've tried it with 4 Cerwin vega! speakers, and even at max volume, it is still precise with no distortion (Very noisy though!!).The sound is great, the interface is extremely simple (Volume, balance, Bass, Treble and source, That's all!) No gadgets to boost you bass or to alter your sound. It's just plain simple but very efficient with lots of output power. The only problem is the tuner (It doesn't work very well! you need a big antenna or a cable connection if you want to use it.). So, if you're not looking for gadgets but only for great sound , This receiver is for you! ... Read more

Nice sounding receiver/no frills
I picked up the Onkyo TX-8211 as a second receiver to put in my computer room.It has a sharp looking black finish which matches most of my other audio equipment and its inputs nicely acommodated my IPOD, a portable audio CD player, and the outputfrom my computer's sound card.I hooked it up to a pair of Sony MB150H bookshelf speakers and it sounds great. My out of the box experience was a little disappointing because the supplied cheapie FM antenna made the receiver seem like a dud with respect to picking up stations.I went to Radio Shack and picked up a simple FM dipole antenna for $5.I hooked it up and was pleasantly surprised by all the stations I could pull in.With the new antenna, I was able to fill up my presets with clear sounding radio stations.It would have been nice if the TX8211 used bannana connecters but overall its a good receiver for the price.

Great Stereo Receiver
This is a really good receiver at a really good price. Onkyo is a well know brand that has been around for 25+ years and has always provided high quality equipment. This unit has a phono input(no you cannot use the aux for phono) that is seldom found on most receivers. If you really need to rattle the neighbors windows, the 50 Watts/channel maybe a little light, but great for nornal use. ... Read more

Very good, but beware of installation
This Guitarport-Rifftracker setup is a really elegant piece of work. Good unit but difficult setup
It took me a long time to figure out exactly how to set up the A-V wiring on this unit... especially the digital audio ins.The manual is not helpful at all in this regard.For instance, to properly receive the digital audio signal you must ALSO have the analog paths connected. This is breifly mentioned in a sidebar deep in the manual.
Audio sounds great, but video is a nightmare
I am very happy with the sound quality of this receiver.I matched it with a set of JBL SCS300s and the system provides that full, low volume clarity I was looking for. However, hooking up the video was impossible and after working with JVC tech support for 45 minutes, they advised me to take the unit in for service. (JVC wanted me to drive my brand new $275 receiver 30 miles away for repair. I don't think so.)
nifty receiver
I've had this unit for about 6 months and it has been quite good to me.Sound is great to my non-audiophile ears.Plenty of inputs.Only (small) beef with the thing is that if I use the RF antenna the unit doesn't seem to respond to my universal remote control (a logitech harmony).Otherwise I'm quite pleased. ...
