4-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive solution for large format scanning
I think this scanner is really great and it's the only flatbed out there that I've seen below $300-400. My first one was really great, but it was flaky. This is my second one and it works as expected and points out what was wrong with the first one. Mechanically the first one suffered from power shorts from the start that I misinterpreted as a power saving feature, this one doesn't and is always on. I used the heck out of the first one and it had nice quality. Performance is nice. Best investment I've made. And so inexpensive I don't mind just outright buying a new one when the old one crapped out on me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific forscrapbooking/large projects
As a professional designer in the scrapbooking industry I completely rely on the dependability and color quality of this scanner for my 12x12 pages.I have never had a problem in 3 years and only now need a new one.A great value for a scanner of this size and price! Some adjusting in the contrast/brightness, even saturation is needed but I would expect to do that with any scan. That's part of the process unless you have $4-5,000 in extra cash lying around for the tip top line of scanners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good scanner, great value
Don't believe the naysayers. This is a good machine. Most of these negative comments were written by folks who probably had no experience in scanning. There is a learning curve. DUH? No scanner scans everything perfectly right out of the box. Adjustments have to be made in order to get acceptable results. These people who criticize the Mustek ScanExpress, are proclaiming their own ignorance. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An O.K. unit, but I expected more.
The H.K.AVR-340 is Heavy. At first look and feel it seems to be built rather well. Some of the things that I found later that were of poor quality were the instruction book to set it up properly. It was, in my judgement, poorly written. A loy of the set up became "try this and see if it works".
4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Receiver
I just got the avr340 and I am loving it. I love the fact thatI can be watching a movie and have a different source be playing in our patio for the kids to entertain. The EZ speaker set up option makes configuring your speakers a breeze. The remote can be alittle overwhelming but over all its great.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Reliable
I bought this model right after it was available in Dec last year. Initially it worded great. But after only two months, all the audio inputs do not work. I have to pay for the shipping for the exchange under the warranty. One more thing I like to point out. AM/FM radio receiption wasn't that great -- due to the relative low sensitivity. Wouldn't recommand it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More inputs than I first thought!
I was disappointed at first because you only get 4 video switches: DVD,VCR,DBS, and AUX.But it's actually better than this since you can dynamically select where (HDMI,Comp,S or C) these inputs come from (Note that only VCR and DVD have the HDMI option). For instance, for "DVD" you can easily change the video input to come from HDMI,Component,S, or Composite, and you can *separately* select where the audio comes from: HDMI,Digital, or Analog. So here's how I have mine set up: DVD - HDMI from DVD Player, Component from XBox; VCR - HDMI from Dish PVR, Component from XBox 360 (and digital audio from XBox 360!); DBS - S from TiVo; AUX - S from PlayStation. There's also another selection for an audio-only input (if you have satellite audio, for example). This means you can actually connect more devices, but you'll have to press a couple more buttons to switch the video and/or audio to that device. In any case, ALL devices up-sample to HDMI.As stated, the only exception is the receiver's setup screens from the box which go over S -- but you can do everything from the front panel anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars Do your homework!
Small size, but it gets very hot!Leave lots of room for ventilation.Looks like it has lots of connections for lots of equipment, but not really. No phono or CD inputs, and it combines VCR/DBS, and DVD/DVR inputs.Won't output sound to TV via HDMI cable even if you use HDMI input from DVD or DBS/Cable.Sound quality is good, but I'd check out the comparable Denon model (about $150 more) if you've got lots of equipment to connect.

5-0 out of 5 stars great almost all-digital receiver
this is a great receiver - it doesn't have 20 different inputs for your 4 devices, but you know what?i only have a handful of inputs and they are all digital anyhow!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of features for the money
For the money, this has several great features. The sound really surprised me for such a small unit. If there is still not enough bass for you, there is a subwoofer output to plug into. It has aux. input to hook the TV to so you can watch the game or race with a little more than just the tiny TV speakers.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, beware of player noise
Sound quality is excellent, ton of features (plays almost every music format there is, not to mention DVDs), compact and aesthetically pleasing. However, the unit itself is very noisy during disc play. A loud high pitch whirring noise from the CD motor can be heard over low to medium volumes. You'd have to pretty much set to high volumes when playing music or movies if you want to drown out any of the noise coming from the CD unit. If you can live with the noise, this is a good buy, nothing else compares when it comes to the available features. But beware, the inability of the unit to control disc noise may be why it's so affordable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing little system
I have a large 100 watt stereo setup that consists of five JVC components and two pairs of speakers. I bought this system as something I could play easily when I wasn't doing "serious" listening.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not work with WMP
This player doesn't work with Windows Media Player. This player works by dragging files in Windows Explorer so any protected content WMAs will only cause a format error. If you are only playing songs you took off your own CDs then this player should work fine, but if you have any music you've downloaded from a Napster type service then you are out of luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars A genuine bargain
A good buy for the price. I live in a very rural area so the unit required an external self-powered FM antenna and a wire AM antenna, both of which I already had installed. Any radio used here requires external antennas. Reception by this unit is very good. Sound quality is excellent for attached CD and tape players. Simultaneously drives two big old Bic Studio Monitor speakers, and two utility speakers in another room, with fine quality distorion free sound. No problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars Was I disappointed!
I read the reviews and figured this receiver would fit my needs. What I didn't expect was to have to take it to a repair center as soon as I got it to fix the loud hum from the speakers. That was today and they estimate that it will be three weeks before I get it back. I wish I had never bought it.

2-0 out of 5 stars No tape monitor feature
It has been 15 years since I last shopped for a stereo receiver, and back then there were certain features that all receivers came with, regardless of how basic or inexpensive the model was.Well, I took for granted that they all still came with these basic features, and I was wrong.I just purchased the Sherwood RX-4105, and it does not have the tape monitoring feature. It has tape input and output jacks, but it doesn't have the monitoring feature that lets you listen to the tape deck's output while you are recording. If you press the tape button, the receiver switches away from the input source you are trying to record from! The tape monitor function is also necessary for the use of an equalizer. It baffles me that they are still giving you tape in and out jacks, but don't give you the proper switching for monitoring.I guess they figured they could save a few pennies by leaving out this function, since the demand for tape decks has declined in recent years.Unfortunately, there are those of us who still like to use an EQ to customize the sound to our environment, even if we are no longer recording on tape.I have found it difficult to verify whether or not a receiver has this function, since the specs and features list usually never mentions it.If they have a good picture of the unit, you can look to see if there is a button that says "tape monitor."Just looking for tape in and out jacks will not help, because as I mentioned above, the RX-4105 has these jacks, but no monitor function. Then there are some models that have monitoring even though the switch only says "tape."The best way to know for sure is to try out the unit first, but this is not practical when shopping online.I have even gone so far as to go to the manufacturer's website and download the instruction manual. If the section on tape connections and recording doesn't mention "monitoring," it probably doesn't have it.Also, many models no longer have phono input, but this is easy to check just by looking at a good picture of the unit. The RX-4105 also lacks an auxillary AC jack on the back of the unit; not a big deal, but a consideration if you have an outlet strip already filled up by other components. Another thing I noted that is worth mentioning is that many newer models such as this one have volume control knobs that do not have any position indicators or scale markings on them; so be sure to turn down the volume before you turn off the unit, or you could be in for a surprise when you turn it back on again!

4-0 out of 5 stars I'd buy it
In fact I did to try it out, got it for $220 at a retailer. I'm not one of those people that can tell huge a deference from one receiver to another with the same speakers. This receiver has all the bells and whistles you would expect in today's electronics (see pioneer web site and amazon product description). So fare I've driven a wide range of size, power and brand speakers though it and seems to do well with them all.Currently I'm using a set of the pioneer S-HF41-LR speakers and it drives them loud and clear no problem on any channel/setting. I won't dive into it's features as they will make any speaker sound better for a given apllicaiton, just the facts...

5-0 out of 5 stars Pioneer VSX 516K 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver
This receiver was worth every penny.I upgraded from an RCA 2300 receiver and let me tell you that more power gives better sound.I always had to turn the volume up on the RCA but the Pioneer has Dialogue Enhancement and that makes a huge difference. The language for operating the receiver takes some time to get used to.This is not something you can just plug in and play.It has a quick setup option which helps a little but does no justice. When I did that for mine I noticed that the audio was not matching the visual. It took a little bit of time to tweak it and now I love the overall results. One thing however is that the manual spoke of an Dolby Digital EX display option, but it did not say that it only pertained to 6.1 EX and not 5.1.I was freaking out because I was watching Episode I which had DD 5.1 EX and the EX icon that the manual spoke of didn't light up so I had to call Pioneer up, which by the way was not a bad experience, and was told that.I wish the remote was backlit and was a little bigger. I'm just excited now I have DTS options which are a whole lot better than DD.Before this receiver my sound was ok.With the receiver...I my sound is fantastic and I wan't to get everything DTS now and 6.1 if possible.I compared Blade 2 in 5.1 DD and 6.1 DTS and of course 6.1 rocked. My guests kept looking around them to see where the sound was coming from and the dialogue enhancement feature worked like a charm.Never asked to rewind or "What did they just say?"I think it is worth every penny. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away From This MP3 Player
First the player wouldn't recognized the MiniSD card. Then Dealing with Philips for the warranty was Horrible. They sent me 2 different units and one was worse than the other. ended up settling for a refund. It's not worth the headache.

4-0 out of 5 stars Philips MP3 review
I have used this MP3 and find it fairly easy to use although the cradle for the player is difficult to seat the player itself into without hitting the buttons on the side.Other then that inconvenience it works very well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best device...
I love the size of this player and it's easy to use features. However, the main problem I encountered was downloading purchased songs to it.It kept freezing up and scanning through all the songs without playing them.I bought several songs from Rhapsody that I wanted to put on my mp3. Even though Rhapsody songs are listed as being compatible with this device,...no such luck.My husband had to convert all my Rhapsody songs (which was a huge pain in the butt), burn them to a cd, and then move them to my mp3 player.Since then, it's only frozen once and we had to delete everything off and start again to fix it.:-/ ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Radio's great for news but too much compression for music
I bought this tuner last year after finding out this receiver had optical and coax digital outputs for SS, expecting great soon to be 5.1 surround sound and entertainment, but was disappointed when I found out XM went to another system (neural sound decoding). This receiver is great for News but you will be diappointed if you decide to hook it up to your home entertainment system for music. You would think anything coming off of a satellite in digital would put you close to the sound of a philharmonic but because of the number of channels XM has and the high compression they use...you wouldbe better off listening to the transmission of your local AM radio statiion. If you are a news/sports junkie, this receiver is for you, if you want cd quality sound....don't waste your time or money. I have recently sold my receiver on E-Bay and am looking at over the air HD reception using the Ibiquity system. If local FM radio stations decide to use more then two sub-channels (after going digital)and thus lower their bit rate, I'm afraid, it too, will sound as poorly as XM and this polk receiver. Polk csr said, Polk does not intend to update or support the XRT-12 with a Neural Sound firmware update, to enablethis receiver to function as a 5.1 ss receiver using the backside output of optical digital or coax.
3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, integratable with your HT/HA PC system.
Product is decent, most importantly it is integratable with your HT/HA system via RS232. I can control it via my package (CQC) that also controls CDs, DVDs, TV, HVAC, irrigation, lighting, & security. The Polk XRt12 makes the perfect partner for myhometheaterpc.

Editorial Review

In the fast-paced world of home entertainment technology, change has become an understated word. Technologies now change so quickly that the new becomes yesterday’s product before you barely become accustomed to it. Perhaps it’s time to refocus on what’s really important for quality audio: first-rate sound with high power output. Forget about over-hyped processing technologies. If your receiver lacks the fundamental amplifier design from the power supply through to the output stage, everything else is superfluous. The TX-8522 is built with this in mind. Incorporating Onkyo’s proprietary Wide Range Amplifier Design (WRAT) with an isolated power transformer and discrete output stage, the TX-8522 is focused on maintaining the purity of music, radio and video sources. Also, with the option to take up XM® Satellite Radio or to connect your iPod® to the system, the TX-8522 gives you the versatility for a sweeping range of entertainment options. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive Wattage Rating
For the person who said that this is a 100 watt amp, it isn't - at least not using normal measuring practices. Power is normally rated for 8 Ohm loads, for which this receiver is rated at 65 watts, not 100 watts. Any receiver roughly doubles its power rating when the Ohm rating is halved. It's deceptive on Onkyo's part tout this as a 100 watt receiver by measuring it with a four ohm load.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, high-powered stereo receiver
The fad today is for multi-channel audio/video receivers. But most people stiill listen to music with just two speakers and, consequently, only need a good stereo receiver. In fact, a sound stereo system featuring a good stereo receiver, such as this Onkyo, and an excellent pair of speakers will sound better than a typical multi-channel system which usually features several mediocre speakers. Unless you can afford a good multi-channel receiver and several good speakers you will get better sound by sticking with good stereo equipment. The Onkyo TX-8522 is a very good stereo receiver with a wide range of inputs and controls, including a remote control. With 100 watts per channel power it is capable of driving virtually any speakers to deafening levels (which is NOT good for your ears) even if you are inclined to apply significant bass boost. Although the TX-8522 is very reasonably priced, if you would prefer a less expensive receiver, consider the 50 watts per channel Onkyo TX-8211. ... Read more
