4-0 out of 5 stars An Alternative to MP3 Players
I've been contemplating for quite sometime, getting an MP3 player for my 30-40 mile bike rides.I had grown tired of having the portable cd player strapped to my side, so I figured it was time for a change. While looking at MP3 players at Target, I came acrossthis little gem.At the time, these were selling for $[...] compared to the 1gb players for $[...]. Now you can buy these online for around $[...]. I was so interested, that I talked myself into getting the Sony Psyc MiniDisk walkman. The player has very clear and good sound, and the disk don'tskip when you hit the potholes.Even when I occassionally jog, I've only had it skip one time, and that's when I tripped and fell. It's light and small and you barely notice it strapped on your arm.I have a arm strap where you can carry an extra minidisk too.The battery life is very long, even for the cheap Dollar General brand of batteries I use.As stated in other post, you drain more of the batteries transfering the music from your computer to the minidisk.Example: I had to change out the batteries after making 4 disk.So just keep a few batteries on hand, while you make them, or get recharge ones.Making the disk are very simple, and you can choose different bit rates for the music. The higher the bit rate, the fewer songs on the minidisk. So you can get anywhere from 2 hours to 5 hours of music on the disk, depending on the rate. The sound quality is noticeble, so I use the 3 hour rate. So I have a large selection on songs, without giving up all sound quality. Now that Mp3 players are cheaper, most stores don't carry this now.So youo might want to go with that 2gb player from Best Buy for $[...], but this is still a good value.I luv mine and will continue to use it, until it conks out.Its light, easy to use, and have very good sound. You will be very happy with this purchase.

The MZ-N420D can not directly record from any out put sorce such as a radio etc... It can however hook up through your computer via usb cable.. i have yet to set it up succesfully, as it is actualy quite a bit of a hassle. The software seems dated and wont recognise the MD's presence at all. I have tryed trouble shooting to no avail... Hopefully this was not a wasted purchase...

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Product
This is a good product. Not as good as an MP3 player with internal memory, as it is bulkier. But, it is great for the price. The only drawback is, it is somewhat larger than a player with internal memory. Running with it can be uncomfortable at times...if you are a runner, you may prefer a smaller mp3 player, one you can put in your shorts pocket.... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Does what I need it to do
Ok, first things first. Since I deal with a huge number of mp3 files, mainly on mp3 cd's, the idea of being able to put them on a minidisc sounded to good to be true. And it was, because the files are converted before they are transferred to the minidisc, so technically, they are not actually mp3 files, they are oog files. Plus, the software is a nightmare. Other people have said that the updated version is better, which is the version I have, so I can't even imagine how terrible earlier versions were. SONY is really screwing the pooch, as they could absolutely rule the mp3 world, with major improvements, because with these Hi MD players, if the unit messes up, you don't lose your music, because it is on a removable disc, whereas with a conventional mp3 player, if something happens to the unit, you're done. One big thing that disappointed me was way these things were pitched to work as removable drives for a computer, but in reality, they are a long way from that. Sony has a very long road to make that particular part of the dream a reality, but I get the feeling they are just going to sit on their hands, and these things are eventually going to be phased out. So I say, pitch any other company out there to actually take over the market for them, maybe Magnavox or Panasonic, two companies who aren't afraid to improve their products and are known for decent reliability. But, as I mentioned in the title, they work for what I need them to, which is to put large amounts of music onto a tiny disc and never having to worry about the disc again, which is a huge improvement over cd's, which have to be replaced from time to time. I know people who are using the same minidiscs from ten years ago with no trouble, and these guys are professional mobile dj's. Sony is a really screwing themselves over this time by not making faster improvements with the software and etc., so Magnavox, I hope you hear me. Peace out

4-0 out of 5 stars Sony has made the SonicStage software MUCH easier to use.
I have been a LOUD critic of Sony's SonicStage software. (You can see my rants on older models.)

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay for what it does
A step up from CD players but not up there with mp3 harddrive players.
3-0 out of 5 stars Say no to MD
It's a great and stylish product but I won't buy one again. I know MD is very popular in Asia and other parts of the world, but I just don't see how is that better then MP3 players especially when the price on the MP3 players are getting cheaper by the days? I used to own 2 SONY MD players and got rid of them all!!! The sound quality is good only if you record the tracks in MD standard format and in real time. Anything other than that, is gonna sound crappy. I am sure many reviews have already covered that aspect. And the SONY software sucks too when it comes to copyright laws. They remind me a bunch of old guys trying to enforce the old rules. Do yourself a favorite and get a MP3 player like iPod or something.

1-0 out of 5 stars The software brings down the overall value
Though the sound quality and other hardware features are good, I would seriuosly recommend users not to buy this product. The software is such a big hassle that you stop using it as a MP3 player. It is a big pain to check in and check out songs and the user interface of the sonicstage software needs to be improved by leaps and bounds.

1-0 out of 5 stars Old stuff
We are entering the digital music area, and this device is archeology! There is no need for tapes or other music supports. The Sony software is a pain in the neck. Once you imported the files into the ATRAC format, you cannot even move them back in your computer. Sony is so concerned of protecting copyrights that the software would lock on you. The MD player is also heavy and bulky, and it will dislocate your shoulder if you carry it for jogging. I had two of them and after I bought a regular Mp3 player. Buy something else!

5-0 out of 5 stars Why do I like this product?
Because I'm 32, and was brought up on electronic audio devices which rerquired the user to insert a disc/record/tape into them in order to 'play' the information recorded therein. Or at least, that's my pet hypothesis.
5-0 out of 5 stars Such a good friend!
This player lasted me through many scary high school years. When it died, I was miserable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highest recommendation
I've had my MZ-R37 for several years.I'm a professional musician, working solo (vocals, electric harmonica, guitar, organ bass pedals) or with other musicians.I use the MD to record my/our live performances.I originally had rather low expectations.I just wanted to review the music.Generally I used the output of the sound reinforcement system (tho I made a lot of very good recordings with the included stereo mic). The quality is excellent.I've been able to use many tunes recorded on the MD for CD's.Yes it's THAT good.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sony Product
This is a portable Mini-Disc player with the capability to record. The unit is very small, but also very sturdy.I believe the body of the unit is metal, not cheap plastic.Do not mistake these for the cheaper Sony portable audio products that seem to be geared for teenagers. This is a sophisticated, well-made device. It comes with a folding headset, Sony Nickel Cadmium rechargeable batteries, remote control, power adapter, and an optical cable. The unit has the capability to recharge the batteries when it is plugged in to an outlet. For recordings, I suggest using the power adapter instead of running on battery power. An excellent Sony product.I highly recommend it if you can find it here or ebay.I have been using and enjoying mine for over 2 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent MD player
I got this MD player as my Christmas present. It didn't look very attractive and new, in terms of design. When I started to use it I realized what was hidden under its silver body panel! The sound was amazing (44.1 kHz) and the batteries lived for a good time to enjoy the music (approximately 12h with alkalines).Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not an MP3 player
This player DOES NOT PLAY MP3s/WMAs/etc. Do not be fooled by the labeling. It converts these formats into ATRAC, this becomes a problem when you try to transfer over protected file formats that you might download off of iTunes and such. It's better to say this is an ATRAC player.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but Limited
    Bottom Line:
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for the Price
I've had mine for about a year now, and it is wonderful.I didn't want to spend the money on an iPod, and I had several friends who had MD players.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the money
I have happily used my MZ-n707 for several years now, either recording my voice lessons/DMA recitals/other performances, or various live performances.I have gotten around the copy protection prohibiting uploading recordings to my computer (and to CD) by recording them into Cakewalk (or some other audio editing program), then converting the files to .wav format.
4-0 out of 5 stars No problems ...only solutions.
I have owned this model for 2 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars great product, great mp3 alternative
I bought this little guy 2 years ago right in the heart of the MP3 player craze.Everyone I knew had an ipod or some alternative, which they paid $300-$400 dollars for.I did a little research and had always been curious about this technology since I had seen it in the mid-90's.After price and review comparisons, I picked up the Net-MD 610... and boy am I happy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!
The greatest player I have ever purchased. I own two models. The MZ-n505 & the MZ-nf610 (type s) The MZ-n505 I use at work while I am on the job. I have had it for 2 years and it is still going. I have dropped it and god knows what else. I love having the option to put all of my music on a mini disk. Unlike the mp3 players where you have a limit or have to pay a fortune to expand it. And not counting these Ipods that are so small and delicate. The other model (MZ-nf610) that I have I use at home and comes with the fm tuner, I don't use it. I am not a big fan of FM radio anyways. Both models are great players. Also the option of having one rechargable double AA battery is the best. You can recharge the double AA while it is still in the player! I can listen to my NetMd 8hrs without having to recharge. Another way to save you money. Now on the sound quality if your record your music on the standard option it will sound great, but if you try to save space on downgrade your quality you can fit about 60 or more songs (give or take) on one mini disk. Overall this is my favorite portable audio player, and would buy from Sony again and definately a NetMD player!

4-0 out of 5 stars Just remember, this is not an MP3 player
I've been using MDs for almost 8 years now, and I can honestly say that, though they might not be for everyone, they're still better then either CDs or cassettes, portability-wise.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!
The greatest player I have ever purchased.I own two models. The MZ-n505 & the MZ-nf610 (type s) The MZ-n505 I use at work while I am on the job.I have had it for 2 years and it is still going. I have dropped it and god knows what else. I love having the option to put all of my music on a mini disk. Unlike the mp3 players where you have a limit or have to pay a fortune to expand it. And not counting these Ipods that are so small and delicate. The other model (MZ-nf610) that I have I use at home and comes with the fm tuner, I don't use it.I am not a big fan of FM radio anyways. Both models are great players. Also the option of having one rechargable double AA battery is the best. You can recharge the double AA while it is still in the player! I can listen to my NetMd 8hrs without having to recharge. Another way to save you money. Now on the sound quality if your record your music on the standard option it will sound great, but if you try to save space on downgrade your quality you can fit about 60 or more songs (give or take) on one mini disk.Overall this is my favorite portable audio player, and would buy from Sony again and definately a NetMD player!

5-0 out of 5 stars indestructible
I have had this MD player for about 3 years now, and love it. At first, I thought it wouldn't be as good as an MP3 player but how wrong I was. I purchased an MP player for my 13 year old a year ago and it died in less than a year. First the casing wore out and evenutally the player was unusable. Meanwhile, this MD player kept on going. Both of my kids have used it and I have dropped it at least 50 times, usually it just keeps playing. I have had no issues with it. And, I haven't experienced the battery issues or software issues that people complain of. But I like to mix my MDs and then rarely change the music on each one, so there's not a lot of uploading once I get it onto my mini discs, it's basically there for good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat useful md player
I bought this md player thinking it would be great for running and using on public transport. It has been great to a certain extent. Its ok for running though after a while it can get a bit heavy and isn't easy to hold on to if you get a bit sweaty - what is?Its perfect for popping in my bag and listening to to drown out the sound of screaming children on the bus!
4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Player that will do it's job
I received this minidisc player a couple of years ago as a bday present and it hasn't let me down yet. Sound quality is clear as CDs. Easy and simple to use with a joystick to use as the button to play/stop/ff/rew. With the software (SonicStage), I can get over 30 songs on a single disc. Doesn't eat up batteries so don't worry about that. My only problem with the product is the bulky size which doesn't allow for simple transportation. Other then that, very good and useful player.

4-0 out of 5 stars it's not an mp3 player
I bought this mini disc recorder for a very good price. The good part is that the software included has it's own compression format that allows lots of music on one disc and allows the user to set compression ratio....the bad part is that the software is cumbersome to use and very very slow....if you are looking for a mp3 player buy one...not one of these....I bought to use as a portable player (the discs are rewritable) and as a portable recorder which seems to work ok although it does not provide much flexibility...overall i am happy since it cost so little ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad that Amazon describes this unit as a "Player"
Unlike earlier Sony Minidisc portables, this unit can't record directly from a CD player. It can only record via a computer and with a computer initiating the recording process.Fortunately,I have a hifi component Minidisc recorder to record on.More troubling is that the first unit I got of this model failed immediately. It powered up,but could never start playing a disc, and the unit made mechanical noise as it struggled to spin the disc.I opted to send the unit back to Sony instead of the Amazon marketplace merchant.Don't repeat my mistake.Sony exchanges for a reconditioned(not new) unit, though I never got one second of playback out of the original unit.Sony's recoditioned unit plays fine, but the piece of computer CD-Rom software supplied has a few scratches(I don't know if there will ever be occasion for me to use it since I'm not presently a computer owner. My internet access is via MSNTV2 on my T.V.).It would seem that the phasing out of Minidisc portables that can copy directly from a CD player is a music industry power play to get more control over how,or if music can be copied onto Minidisc.I bought this unit only because I have a substantial existing collection of homemade Minidiscs. For newcomers,I would say,buy a portable CD player and forget Minidisc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gadget
I was given this as a gift and especially since it was given to me, I love this thing. It's the poor man's ipod, who wants to spend $200+ when they could get this for like $60-80. It holds up to50- *almost* 80 songs per disk I believe (each of my disks have a different amount-depending on the length of the songs),is skip proof, sound is great, and it's easy to transfer music onto. I find no fault with it. I've had it for over a year and it's held up beautifully, even with being dropped. So personally I think it's a great gadget to have if you can't afford or don't want to splurge on the oh so hyped ipod. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it
The SonicStage is really a disaster. I have been using MZ-RH910 for a year, and I use it for recording music lessons. When I upload my files to computer to back them up, I alway have some recordings (about 15%)unreadable by SonicStage, even though I can listen to them with the MiniDV. What can I do with those recordings? I can only leave them in the MD walkman. If my MZ-RH910 is broken, I have to buy another one in order to listen to those recordings. Obviously I will never buy Sony's recorder again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent utility, capacity, storage, recording, playback
I purchased this unit after reading the reviews.I was looking for a recorder to replace my micro-cassette (yes, ancient) for band practices, and found that a) recorders had changed and b) had migrated to the iPod type of harddrive or solid state.I couldn't find a simple cassette recorder of reasonable size, and ended up comparing the options available, leading me to this.EO's reviews helped significantly, and I purchased this unit along with RCA to stereo miniplug cable, stereo mp to mp cable, and an optical cable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Problems galore....
I bought this product a little over a year ago, and was happy with it for a while. Then it malfunctioned.Sony duly replaced the unit. The unit went unused for a while and then once i began to use it for a while lo and behold, it malfunctioned again in exactly the same manner. As the unit is out of warranty and I will have to pay for the repair, I am now looking at taking my money elsewhere...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Machine
Many of the reviews of this machine contain old or incorrect information. There is a WAV converion tool at this point, and you can burn CD's that will play on any CDR compatiable player right out of sonicstage. I have done this, and I have recorded live music and burned CD's, and recorded Cassette tapes, and burned CD's. It's all there on Sonicstage 2.3.
1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this product, unless losing tracks is your goal!
Do not buy this product, unless losing tracks is your goal.At first, we were very happy with this mini-disc, as the sound quality (if you buy the Sony mic) is impressive. However, when we downloaded the files (which we spent a month live recording) to the software included with the device, they were not able to be burned to a CD, and they were unable to be transferred back to the mini-disc.This came after extensive researching on the Sony web site, downloading the additional upgrade and WAV converter, etc. etc. I spent an hour on the phone with Sony support, at which time they told me to re-transfer the files, which not only was bad advice because it did not transfer again, but it then erased all of the original tracks on the mini-disc. After spending 2 hours on the phone with Sony support, they had no solutions, told us our files were in "limbo" and told us we may not be able to use these tracks and that they would have to call us back. While we waited, we came up with our own backup idea, which would lose sound quality but at least save our files.Sony then called us and recommended the same idea, only they recommended we buy an additional backup disc.We bought two.Good thing we backed it up TWICE, because not only did the software delete the first disc of music, but it also erased part of the backup disc due to an error message that came up from the Sony software (not a computer error, but a SONY SOFTWARE ERROR).Sony support gives you an event number when you call, and they are very courteous, but one event number is not going to cover all of the problems that we encountered with this software. Also, if you call after hours, they ask you ten minutes worth of your personal information and THEN tell you that they are closed and you are not given the option to leave a message. There is no telling when the software is going to fail, and we had to take a gamble with our last disc.Experimentation with tracks is unthinkable, as we were constantly in fear of losing material. We tried to get through the transfer process as fast as possible, for fear of another error message intruding and erasing tracks. We finally got the software to agree with the idea of burning a CD, only to transfer them to the CD in random order (not the order we transferred them). After throwing that CD away, we re-organized the files on the screen, and burned another CD.We had carefully purchased Sony Cds, since we wanted the quality to be top notch. We found that the ONLY Cds that did not come out with a clear recording quality were actually the Sony Cds. We tried three Cds just to make sure it wasn't one bad CD.Maxell and Philips actually worked much better with the Sony software-- they were flawless. Sony had static throughout the entire CD.All were the same download!Another complaint is that the instructions regarding burning a CD from live audio are not complete. They lead you to the point of transfer from mini-disc to hard drive, and then you are responsible for finding out the remainder of the process (converting files and burning to a CD). Obviously, Sony has now upgraded their product to allow for CD burning, so they should include some information with their product which tells you to upgrade and to use the WAV conversion tool BEFORE you transfer the files to the software included with the product. Why can't Sony make this compatible with Media Player, for example? Why does it have to be Sony software? Their software obviously needs to be researched further before more people lose valuable recordings. There is no safeguard against lost files. I would recommend buying a DAT recorder or another alternative if you are serious about recording live music. If you decide to purchase this product, I recommend first upgrading to SonicStage 2.3, downloading WAV converter tool (available on Sony web site), and then pray.I at least hope this advice will save you the 30+ hours we spent just at the computer, plus the additional finances that we incurred (cables and discs) just to back something up that should not have needed to be backed up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Has the freedom and flexibility that mp3 players lack!
Although minidisc players have never caught on in the US, I still continue to support them over mp3 players because of the freedom that they allow users. With mp3 player (I have iPods in mind because I know how they work), you connect it to your computer and it updates your entire library in only a few minutes. The MZ-N1 cannot boast such high transfer speeds, unfortunately. However, if you are like me and have an old laptop that is already chock full of mp3s, you are going to have a problem with uploading all those CDs when you don't even have room for another mp3! And don't think about deleting them after you put them on your mp3 player... because the next time you update, your tracks will have disappeared.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
I recieved this product as a birthday present. This product is a very solid piece of electronic. It works well with no problem. It is easy to use and very straight forward. Sony MD players are great!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best MD players/recorders on the market.
Unlike in the UK, the Minidisc (MD) technology never really caught on here in North America, most likely due to the fact that the media and players are pricier than the relatively inexpensive CDR or MP3 options. As a technology, however, it far surpasses anything on the market, so buying one for me was an easy decision. I decided to go with the Sony MZ-N1 for a variety of reasons, and it has more than lived up to my expectations. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars At what I paid for, it's a 4-star product...
What a strange combination, a camera and a Hi-MD player! Ignoring the list price for a second, this was obviously a failed project that some "smart" guy at Sony thought would put MD ahead of iPod. The problem comes from the fast decreasing prices of technology OR the increasing functionality. On a different level, what am I supposed to do, keep a spare MD ready for pictures or leave some room on each music MD for pictures? Impractical...
4-0 out of 5 stars My review of DH10P

5-0 out of 5 stars The MZ-DH10P is INCREDIBLE!
Though Sony has discontinued this model, I see it is still being sold so I wanted to jot down some thoughts on it. I'm not sure why Sony takes all the time it does to come up with new products, to only discontinue making them six months later. Very bizarre.

4-0 out of 5 stars My preferred music mix device. One of my favorite toys.
The first thing you need to know about this player is that it is not able to do any digital recording. Analog recording only! That's by no means the end of the world, but if you are serious about using a minidisc player a lot, you might want to pony up the extra funds and go digital. On the other hand, analog recording means you don't have to fool around with any dubious computer software, so its not all bad. 2-0 out of 5 stars This product [stinks]
I thought that the minidisc player [stinks]. I was stupid enough to buy one without knowing that it records in real time. It records at 1x real spead. That is terribe!!! I was trying to save money and not buy a cd-r. So i got ripped off, because right now, with the new model it records at 32x speed. That pisses me off. I am disgusted with this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Minidisc is better then most MP3 players
Minidisc is better then most MP3 players, but nobody ever really talks about them.I went into the store to look at MP3 players.I wanted something that was small, could hold all my favorite music, and have all the features of a CD player.I enjoy working out at a gym (music is a must) and the cassette player that I was using was just not what I wanted. The person at the store directed me towards this product.I looked at the reviews for it and decided to buy it.Read more
