Editorial Review

Forget thinking outside the box--now you can stop worrying about the box altogether. Coby's DVD-224 is about the size of a hardcover book, so whether you're ferrying the player between the kitchen and the bedroom or hooking it up for periodic use by the kids, the DVD-224's small size permits enjoyment of DVD programs and music CDs in just about any room you want. While not portable in the traditional sense--the unit has no screen and requires AC power--the DVD-224 is much easier to move around, set-up, and use than a traditional component DVD player.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great for our need
Got this is a gift-- intended for my daughter who will be travelling on an international flight. Product was great, easy to use, picture and audio were clear. It kept my daughter from getting bored during the flight.Bonus pack was great too... its like they've thought of everything you need and included it in the package.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT VALUE!
We bought this product for a long car trip and the kids loved it. I've also used it and thought the sound and picture were wonderful. It was exactly what we were looking for and for a fantastic price! We are very happy.

1-0 out of 5 stars product died after 6 months
I bought this DVD player for my son to use in the car.It worked fine, at first--sound wasn't great, but all in all--he was pretty happy with it.For no apparent reason, after 6 months the screen went very, very dark.I called the Audiovox customer service "hotline" and was told that I could get it repaired for a flat fee of 93$.So...beware--the quality of this product is suspect.I guess the old adage holds true...you get what you pay for. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars definitely worth the money
I bought this toshiba portable dvd player yesterday and think it's a great buy, based on four hours of continuous use.
5-0 out of 5 stars So far, so good, great value
This is my first portable DVD player that I have purchased. It has all the bells and whistles I need, including an 8" widescreen format to enjoy mini theater like video while on the go.I have seen other views fixated on "do not use in a moving vehicle", but I think that is meant to be "don't watch while driving", poorly translated to english. This works fine while moving and in the backseat, and properly secured. This Div-X certified, DTS, Dolby, THX,...ect, plays almost anything you throw at it.It also has build in MMC/XD/SD/Memory stick slot built right into the front, so you can see a nice slide show of family photos prior to returning home. The battery is a bit bulky, but fits nice and flat to the back and bottom of the unit, and has a reasonable life (4 hours). This comes iwth AV mini cable adapter, AC adapter, Car adapter, slim remote, and battery pack. I do see a possible inconvenience of having to send this back to the vendor for work, but I recieved this as a gift, and that is fine by me.An extended warranty was not available where purchased, so this was the option anyway.Overall, picture quality is great, sound is adequate, but with 2 headphone jacks, there is no fighting to hear the sound. This has video in and video out and optical audio out...so it can be hooked into a big tv/stereo system. Finally, very light unit, 1.9 lbs without battery, very portable.Worth checking out, I'm happy, and I think you will be too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good Portable DVD player
T. Tom wrote an excellent review. This is indeed a great player and the best I've found in this price range. I just want to add one tidbit of information that I wish I could find out before buying the unit.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage!!!!
Stops Playing and ccompletely shuts off in a 5-15 minute time frame with a fully charged battery.Volume max. is not loud at all. This player is very noisy which makes the volume seem even lower. Can only Stop or Play Movie without the very delicate remote.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent player, really great purchase!!
This DVD player is great for the road, and even at home when you don't want to be bothered. Unless the are much loud noises happening around you, the players' speakers work fine. It comes with all of the accesories you'd want, including a car outlet, wall adapter, remote, and the battery. It charges in under 4 hours, and plays for over 3 hours.

This is actually my third portable DVD player, the first two being cheap brands.I can now say that brand name electronics are definitely better.

4-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for trip w/ small children
We bought this unit from Sam's Club right before a trip to Disney World. (8 hours in the car with a toddler--eek!)However, it was/is perfect! We still use it for trips around town when we're in massive traffic or our son is being really fussy. The case that keeps the dvd player on the back of the seat needs a little work, but we figured out a way to make it work for us.Also, the remote doesn't work well, but we don't really need to use it as a DVD usually lasts long enough between stops.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointment at its best...........................
I bought this item for my son for x-mas.We are lucky if we got to use it 4 times before it stopped working.Products this bad should not be allowed to be sold.

1-0 out of 5 stars 5 movies then done- doesn'twork
I recieved this DVD player as a gift for Christmas from my wife. I used it 5 times- done - screen says no disk with DVD in machine. My wife got the ex-warranty through Amazon.com . NO GOOD UNTIL 1 YEAR AFTER DATE OF DELIVERY> THEY HAVE AUDIOVOX as HAVING A 1 YEAR WARRANTY -- AUDIOVOX HAS A 90 day WARRANTY on this DVD. I ASKED for Help ..... NO response. I was told to wait until DEC. 2006 and then reply.. I suppose I'll recieve the same at that time to--- NORESPONSE -- BOTTOM LINE DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF *%**^%^&&^!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I love this portable DVD player. It is small enough to carry it wherever you want and the quality is high. The sound is excellent and I think that it is one of the best DVD players you can buy for the moment. Of course I am interested in the new Sony DVD player as well. It is very promising.

4-0 out of 5 stars LS91 compared to LS90
Ihave a LS90. It works great. I bought LS91 as a spare. It lasted 1 day before developing a crack where the hinges are. Before I returned it, I tried all kinds of DVD with different formats. Some formats do not play on LS91, I guess that is why it's cheaper than LS90 although when you compare the specs from manufacturer, they are identical. It could be that the LS91 cuts corner on the quality of the product to make it cheaper (maybe that is why there was a crack developed after one day although the LS91 I got could be a lemon to start with).

5-0 out of 5 stars The best portable DVD player for your girlfriend
I bought this to use on my honeymoon. My fiance tried it out flying from the East Coast to the West Coast for her bachelorette party and totally loved it.The battery lasted for two movies easy, it was small, and the screen adjusts great for an airline seat.My fiance hates all my technology stuff but loves this DVD player and says she likes it more than me.Don't worry about complaints about the resolution - on a small screen it doesn't really make a difference - only on text when it first starts can you tell it isn't high resolution.I find that with it plugged in, turning the brightness to +5 and adjusting the color to +2 or 3 produces a great looking movie. Also this DVD player fits any type of format to the screen area as some others like the Toshiba SD-2800 do not.I also stopped by a Best Buy and it was the brightest richest colored screen on a sunny day in the store by far.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great deal!
I bought this because there was a considerable discount included, but I really feel like I got more than my money's worth.Works great, right from the start. No problems or hitches at all.The picture is good, the sound is ok too, and I like that I can connect it to a TV to use as my regular DVD player.I haven't had any issues with it and I love that I can take it with me.Oh, and the battery charges very quickly too! It's great!

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this dvd player
I bought this DVD player when I arrived in the USA from the UK for my 3 mth long summer work experience at the start of the summer. And Yes it still works.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
So far I'm really happy with the performance of this product. I've never heard of the Astar before but while doing my online search for an affordable Portable DVD Player I came across them...the price was fitting for my budget and not only that---the product description was pretty good. So eventhough I felt a little unsure of what I was doing due to the unfamiliarity of the company's name...I still went ahead with my purchase. And guess what?

Polaroid's PDV-1002A portable DVD player is small enough for travel and--with its 10.2-inch, widescreen TFT LCD--broad enough to render vivid, detailed, easily viewable images from DVDs and digital photos in hotels or bedrooms. Its screen offers uncommon positioning options with its rotational design: pivot the LCD left or right and, at 180 degrees you can even tilt it back upon itself for, effectively, "closed-lid" viewing.Read more

The DVD player is great. It is easy to use and the picture quality and sound is great. Amazon delivered the product on time. I would reccommend this DVD to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great picture; poor sound
I have had this for over a year now. I haven't used the battery, and I don't "travel" with it. I use it in the house & for the backyard. The picture is great. There are times the lid does not catch properly. The biggest problem is the volume does not go high enough. Often I read the subtitles since I cannot get the volume any higher. I use it almost every day and it is pretty reliable. I have been pleased with the product except for the sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player
I bought this product to take with us on a family trip. Pro's: It is compact, and easily portable. The rotating screen can rotate all the way around and then fold flat against the DVD player, allowing it to be hung from/between car seats for easy viewing. Picture quality is great! Drawbacks: The battery did not last as long as the three hours it boasted, so my son was not able to watch his entire DVD on the plane ride. Also, it needs a protective case to avoid being dropped, scratched, or damaged in transit. Sound volume is not loud enough unless headphones are used. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Having Audiovox DVD problems? Try this FIRST...
I posted this as a comment below, but it actually should be here separately so that perhaps it will solve some problems you may be having.
4-0 out of 5 stars love features and all the accesories!
I bought this last month to travel with for my toddler.I love that it has the av hook ups.Instead of carrying around all our DVD's I now have the Conveyance to plug in our Archos media player.I love all the accessories that came with with DVD player. The head phones sound awesome and when you take off the protective cover the signal is very strong and you can hear it really well at various angles. It's great to also have to FM transmitter for my mp3's that I can now hear over my truck speakers because my truck CD player does not play MP3's.We just love it. It's well worth the price considering all the stuff that comes with it. I just wish the bag was big enough to house the headphones.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke right after the warranty expired.
This is an extremely unreliable unit. After spending 400.00 the unit lasted only 4 months. The CD will not eject out of the unit and a message appears stating that there is no signal input.I talk to Audiovox and they stated that the unit has failed because of a Video and or software problem. Even though they acknowledge it is their problem they refuse to take care of it.This is now going to cost me an additional 160.00 to have it fixed. So unless you want an aggravating experience and want to spend a total of 560.00 for an unreliable unit I wouldn't waist your money on this. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Battery is a serious issue
I bought this thing for my brother and he used it four or five times. The battery is "defective" and needs to be replaced.I've heard on a number of sites that the batteries are "defective."Don't buy this thing if you plan on using it without an adapter of some sort.Costs $35 to replace the battery, which is built-in and requires sending the whole machine back. With shipping, I'm sure it costs over half of what most people pay.The only thing "defective" is the machine itself (and the wonderful people at Audiovox).Other than that it's great!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars just follow the advice....
Following the advice of other reviewers, I played a full length DVD on AC power before charging and I've had no problems with the battery.Small, compact and gets the job done! The 'open' button (to remove a DVD) seems like it doesn't latch properly, but it's never popped open while playing so I guess it's OK.

3-0 out of 5 stars Battery
Tried to watch a DVD with the battery fully charged and found that there is no way to watch a complete movie without recharging the battery. Battery life should be longer. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Product should be recalled.
I really enjoyed this product as long as it worked. It has a much longer battery life than similar players. The folding display is also a nice feature. The picture quality was better than similar priced products.
3-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced
I bought this item because of the long battery life.Shame on me for assuming that by buying the most expensive portable I would be getting all the bells and whistles.Even $100 el-cheapo players include video inputs...not the LS90.I was looking forward to using it to review home videos and pictures while on vacation. The sound, picture and battery life are all first rate but the LS91 has all this AND AV inputs. For $100 less than the LS90 it's a no-brainer.The only difference I can find is the LS91 doesn't include a remote. If you can't live without it--buy a universal remote at Walmart for $15.

3-0 out of 5 stars excelent but buyer beware
As a previos buyer of the panasonic DVDLS55...I received the dreaded H03 message...I called panasonic and was told it would cost $250 to repair it...I purchased the LS90 from another vendor with a 4 year extended warranty...If you buy this player do that also...3 business companions of mine have received the H03...Great product here but protect your investment people....It took 1 1/2 years for me to receive the message and believe me you will get yours also! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is a replacement for another Coby player
I just had a Coby DVD-209 player shipped to my address today. It was a mere ($30) replacement for a (free) DVD-207 model I got about two years ago, which no longer works. Shortly after plugging it in and trying it with two DVDs I find it works just fine.No complaints with packaging or transit issues either. And given my budget, I'm a satisfied customer.

3-0 out of 5 stars quality depends on....
I had a Coby mailed to me, and while not faulting the USPS or the handling at amazon, something must have happened to the unit going from point a to point b. The player would be loud with certain discs and refused to play others.
1-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea K.O.'d by Fatal Flaw

2-0 out of 5 stars Increasingly frustrating
This is our second portable DVD player. We purchased a "cheap" one first and had problems you'd expect from a cheap one so we then exchanged it for this model on the salesperson's suggestion.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasently surprised
I've had this player for over a year now and it's still operating great, especially for the amount of used and traveling it does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cool DVD player. Great for commutes or traveling
For the price you can't go wrong. I use this mini-dvd player on the bus to work. Update 06/13/06, don't use that much anymore while it's a good product, it's takes about 15 minutes of work to watch 60 minutes of tv. I find it easier to read a book or newspaper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like the Energizer Bunny!!! Keeps going....
Bought this 3-4 years ago before Portable DVD players became really popular. (I paid like $250+ for it.) It has taken a beating from my 3 yr old..kicking it many, many times, dropping it, etc. and it just keeps going. We mostly use it in the van, but also use the plug in adapter once in awhile. We've never used the battery. It has never skipped (only if the DVD is dirty so not a player problem). The only problem we are having right now is we need a new car adapter and will order one. I bought a second player for my older DD so she can watch her own movies (a Panasonic-only because it was really cheap) so I hope that one lasts just as long. I basicallyjust usemine in the car. There were times that it didn't cut on, but I never power it off so what we do is turn the power button off and then back on and it's good to go. We really got our money's worth.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wow.... this thing was even sorrier than the Mintek.
After Portable DVD Player # 1 (which was a 5" Mintek) stopped working on me, I threw it away and bought this thing, an Initial 7" portable DVD player, which was actually twenty percent less than what I paid for the 5" Mintek. Upon removing the unit from the book and testing it, I had already noticed one problem that did not occur with the Mintek. Unlike most other machines, this unit does not allow one to watch their source on both its screen and a television. In other words, suppose you want to watch a DVD on your TFT screen and your television screen simultaneously, then because of a button located on the side of the unit, which actually REQUIRES the TFT screen to be off if one wants to watch their DVD on their television, one does not have such an option. For most individuals, this is probably not too serious of an issue, but I thought that it was one step down from what I previously owned and somehow it took away from the comfort of quickly being able to see what is on television while my DVD is playing and then switching back to having the DVD play on both screens. Another problem, which was slightly less serious, was the fact that one could not zoom out on this unit. One could still zoom in and move around the image, and there would not exist a greenish rectangular area showing where they are zoomed, but zooming out was not a possibility.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the price
My mom bought this DVD player for my kids this past Christmas. She paid $179, with the promise of a $30 rebate. It stopped working after a month. It runs and runs but nothing appears on screen.Unfortunately, she had purchased it two months in advance of giving it, so that the 90-day warranty had just run out.I called the company and explained that we had only had it since December. After a lot of back and forth, the only solution they offered is for me to give them $49 to fix it, or $79 to replace it.I would rather put $79 towards a real name-brand DVD player.(And the rebate has yet to arrive, two months later...) ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Great picture, poor audio
I recieved the MPD-1770 as a Gift, in Dec, 2005 and the unit was rareley used, except on short trips, Two weeks ago I bought a new DVD and decided to play it in the 1770. The picture plays fine, I don't have any audio, I can't reach Mintek or find anybody in the city where I live to repair it. I thought this was a reputable company, now I am wondering if they really stand behind their products. I really like the design just wish it had been more reliable. I'm glad that I didn't spend my hard earned money on such an unreliable product.

4-0 out of 5 stars great dvd player for the money

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of money
We purchased our DVD player in June 2005 from HH Gregg for $140.By December the screen would sometimes turn white so that we couldn't see the picture.Within a few months the screen stayed white all of the time, so that now we cannot play dvds at all.Audiovox wants $94 to fix it.I'm sure thats the cost of replacing it. The sound quality was never great, but we endured it.What a complete waste of money and theres no way I'm sending Audiovox another $100 for this or any other product.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good player - Bad battery
I bought this player well over a year ago.I have not had one problem with the player itself. The picture is great and the sound is good. The battery never lasted very long though. It developed "memory" and won't last more than 10 minutes.I may invest in another batter and try it again, but am just as happy using the car adapter to play it.It's a lot lighter that way!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good player, some flaws
A good portable player, one that has held up well to a lot of use and abuse. The biggest flaw is the battery pack design... you can't use the device while the battery charging.I hope Audiovox fixed this in later models. ... Read more
