4-0 out of 5 stars Nice basic mouse, once you get it on.
I have been using this mouse for over a year now and it runs pretty smoothly. Normally the mouse is within a feet of the sensor and sometimes I enjoy sitting back and using the mouse scroll about 2 feet away, scrolling down webpages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good mice like Jerry !!!
It performs very well. Best value for your money.
3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
This mouse is actually about 2/3 normal size, which makes it more portable than a normal mouse but fits my hand reasonably well. Once the battery is fitted in, the mouse is significantly heavier than a normal mouse which takes some taking used to but is not a problem for every day use.

Editorial Review

Sleek, small, and finished in a sophisticated two-tone black-on-black paint scheme, the Logitech Optical Mouse Black is one of the least expensive name brand optical mice in the marketplace. Featuring optical tracking technology, which monitors movement via a tiny light-emitting diode in lieu of a traditional rolling ball, it is more precise and requires far less cleaning than a conventional ball mouse. Moreover, you can use it on practically any flat surface aside from clear glass, thus negating the need for a mouse pad.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars At this price point i think the many other mice feel more solid than this logitech mouse.
I mainly chose this mouse because I needed one quickly and it was black and matched my set up. I had been using the standard greyish white optical mouse with a scroll wheel and a red light that shined out from under my wrist. This one feels smaller, but still comfortable. However a couple weeks of normal usage made the mouse much less solid feeling. The plastic now mushes as the seems flex slightly in my hand. I decided to have a friend repair the cable of my old mouse. :-/ I am going to donate this mouse to a friend who still has a tracking ball mouse. I like some of Logitechs products and higher end mice. But I would stay away from this mouse. Its not bad, its just not good enough to pick over other mice that cost the same amount.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
Works great. No software to install, just insert into a USB port and it works. Gret price too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent mouse...
For a mouse valued at $12 and eligible for free shipping on orders worth over $25 (at least it was for me when I got it from amazon.com) this mouse is decent at best.I will be brief as possible in addressing its characteristics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mouse choice
If you have a laptop with bluetooth, you need this mouse. It works flawlessly; just like a regular wireless mouse. The advantage of a bluetooth mouse over a regular wireless mouse is that one doesn't need to plug anything into the laptop. Not only does that save a USB port, but it's one less thing to carry (or to lose). The batteries last for months, and it comes with a nice little pouch.

2-0 out of 5 stars NEVER install Logitech's SETPOINT software.
I will keep it simple. :) I am using a dell notebook with WINXP and it has bluetooth s/w (Dell's supplied widcomm) already installed for my pda. The mouse got recognised and works right a way using Winxp's default driver. I kept the existing Widcomm bluetooth stack (or hub - as in logitech literature)without installing any logitech driver/sw from the included CD. Mouse can be turned it off at night, and turned back on in the morning, it has never been failed to reconnect. All is well until 1 day I want to assign the wheel button for keystroke assignment. So I d/l & installed "setpointxxx_v270"from logitech driver section. "setpointxxx_v270" is a bloated s/w contains 2 parts. 1st part is "setpoint" which customizes your mouse behaviour. 2nd part islogitech's own bluetooth stack & services & GUI which are supposed to install only when your pc doesnt contain any Bluetooth stack/hub. However after installing setpoinxxx_v270 & reboot & check update & reboot, bad things started to happen. V270 mouse will fail to reconnect after being turned off & on. It will also fail to reconnect when PC is resuming from standby. No matter what I do, the mouse refuses to reconnect. So I uninstall Setpointxxx_V270. Still it can be detected but failed to reconnect. I end up fixing it by manually remove all logitech residue craps & delete "Bluetooth Virtual HID mouse" under "Human Interface Devices" in "Device manager".(u have to "show hidden devices" to see it)Then reconnect the mouse again. Its clear that Logitech's setpointxxx_V270 will screw up the mouse BT driver. Now It works well without d Logitech's stupid s/w. In terms of hardware, I will rate 4 stars. Logitech loses 2 stars not providing a proper supporting s/w driver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best tracking for bluetooth
I have used a lot of bluetooth mice, and this one has the best tracking of ony of them. Be aware that bluetooth has some limitations, though. Almost any high quality wired mouse will perform better, and many RF mice will too. If you are a tricking maniac, or a gamer, don't use bluetooth, period. If you want bluetooth, either because you don't want an extra dongle, you need all your USB ports, or you need the long wireless range (for controlling presentations in a big lecture hall), this is one of the best mice you can buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT Good Long Term
I have had my mouse for about 8 months and it is broken. The "L" shaped design for the thing you hook to the computer is the problem. I will call it a receiver. It you stow the receiver too many times into the mouse it starts to break. Over time the receiver doesn't receive.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great response, compact size
Overall, I really like this mouse. I hated having wires tangled at my desk, so I went ahead and purchased this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars........
Been using it for 2years and never any complaint. working great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a mouse without annoyances
I've gone through about 6 different mice, and each one had their pros and cons (mostly cons).I finally found the MX518, and trust me, you don't know what you're missing until you've used it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful.
I ordered this on the 31st and it came earlier today, 2 days before it was due. Very nice shipping by Amazon. I had a mouse with a ball before this, so I'm still getting used to the drastic change. It's much smoother. The only things which had me concerned about this mouse were that it looks somewhat big and it looked like the gray part was a baggy plastic covering which I feared would cause sweating. Both of the fears were just that, I was surprised to see that it was probably around 50% smaller than I expected it and the plastic covering is just a brilliant paint job. The buttons near the mousewheel, more specifically the one furthest back, can be a bit uncomfortable to use but other than that I have no problem with the mouse. Five stars!

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool looking mouse...Good for gaming... Not sure how long it will last.
I like this mouse, but I am not sure how long it will last.I play a right-clicking game, and it seems that the right click is going. No problems yet, but I am not sure. This is great for casual gamers, but the jury is still out for hardcore ones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mouse
I'm using it right now actually. It has a great feel in your hand, the extra buttons are all in great locations.I think it's one of the best mice I've ever used.I like the texture of it too, kinda rubberized.Works well.

5-0 out of 5 stars this mouse is perfect for me
i haven't had a single problem with this mouse like i had with so many other roller ball mouses. i don't think i will ever get another that doesn't have an optical lazer. i love the fact that there is the two buttons on the side for flipping back and forth between pages. it is perfect placement. it does have a cord, but i still find that a safty net considering all the problems i had with all the cheep cordless mouses (mice?) i bought. you won't be disappointed with this piece of equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mouse, great price
If you're moving up to an optical mouse from a mechanical ball mouse, the MX500 is a good combination of performance and price. I haven't tested laser mice yet, so I can't compare those to the MX500, but I suspect like other gaming devices, high-end laser mice are great for hard-core gamers, whereas an optical mouse like the MX500 would more than suffice for the rest of us. Like other technology purchases, you want to look for that sweet spot in the price/performance combo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Trackball Ever!
I have always been a fan of Kensington trackball products, and I thought they had cornered the market with their previous gray and blue model.I was skeptical about replacing that one; but after four years of use, the moving parts were no longer in prestine condition.Fortunately, I had the opportunity of using the new model at work, and I was convinced that this optical K Mouse was well worth owning. Its smooth movement made computer use more enjoyable, and its contour design reduces my wrist stress factor to zero. This input device is awesome!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not broken in - Heavy ball
I bought two of these and have only used them a couple days. What I dislike most about it is the weight of the trackball. It is too massive to expect to be able to use delicate movements of one finger. It looks like a pool (table) ball that is especially painted.I have a little arthritis and at first I thought I would have to return it.It was annoying to see that the three little red balls that hold up the trackball were so stiff it made the trackball hard to turn.Turning it upside down and rolling it around helped but the stiffness was noticeable for hours. Not what I expect in a quality product. I use the ball with two fingers. The weight of the ball makes the whole thing topheavy so it is difficult to balance on my lap (where I usually use it). I did not like the size and placement of the buttons because there is no really comfortable position for my large hand.I think if Kensington kept the radial design of the buttons but made more of them and if the buttons extended further then I could use their programmabiltiy to get a good fit.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but DON"T WASH THE BALL...
The advice to wash the ball is wrong. I did, and the ball would barely move... friction. Untill Irubbed a little skin oil on it... then it flew! Continues to spin with the slightest toch. It's great. I laughed, I cried. I'll never go back to a regular mouse ever! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it...
This is my first trackball mouse, and I am so happy that I discovered it. This mouse is the perfect size for my hand and has become even more natural over the past few months than a regular mouse...
5-0 out of 5 stars Trackball a must!!
I have always sworn by Logitech Trackballs, and this one did not disappoint.Very comfortable, easy to use, and a great price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solved my RSI issues
I was very reluctant to try a ball instead of a mouse, but my IH ergonomist said she would stop nagging me if I tried this for a week and if I did not like it she'd switch me back. After two days I told her she was not getting the Trackman Wheel back. That was five years ago and since then I have insisted on these on my computers at work and bought them for my computers at home, all told I've acquired about six of these little guys. I love them.

1-0 out of 5 stars My hand is numb.
My work place recently bought these for our workstations. It has caused about 30% drop in speed of service. Most of this is due to anesthetize effect of long term use. The other problem that has occurred is lack of fine control. After dealing with these trackballs I have come to the conclusion that they must be designed for gamers that use it for two hours or less.

2-0 out of 5 stars blugggh!
all i can tell you is i tried to save money by purchasing this mouse. my boyfriend lost partial mobility of his hand a week into using this THING.... and seriously he could not move his hand without it hurting. i found it very uncomfortable and difficult to master using myself... i say forget saving money and save your hands! spare the extra ten bucks and buy a better mouse. stick with logitech, they have awesome mice USUALLY- just don't buy this particular design. it is awkward!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the trackball I was searching for.
I'm a lefty, and I've been searching for a trackball mouse I could use on a CAD program. This isn't it.Though it is similar to the Logitech Trackman wheel (for right hands), the scroll functions are put into two seperate buttons, instead of one wheel. So for any of you who have programs with functions built into pressing the scroll wheel, it just doesn't work. Also, the track ball in the center is not as ergonimic as it should be, as you use fingers instead of thumb to control. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hands down the best mouse you can get for your laptop
This is a very high quality mouse and it's extremely portable.I've had this mouse for over two years without any problems. It's extremely accurate b/c of it's optical light, but it's main strong point is the fact that you can wrap the cord around the mouse for storage.Definitely one of the best investments I made for my Sony VAIO.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, but a little small (it *is* a Notebook mouse)
The best feature in this mouse is the way the cord winds around the base- pure genius. It works as it should, but try getting a mouse pad- I know they call it an all terrain sensor- But it's not. When used with a pad or on a white smooth surface, it works like a dream.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best Notebook Mouse
You have to consider that wire mouse is better in all category compare to wireless just name apart. Wireless is freedom but battery takes it back. This mouse is perfect if you have USB port on right side of your laptop (if you are righty or left side for lefty) so short wire isn't a problem. Just love it the way USB wire get wrap around and takes no space in laptop bag. Performance is not mean less compare to my home MX1000 laser mouse. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mouse For the price
As far as computer accessories go I have found that the term "you get what you pay for" applies a lot. I don't think you can find a better optical mouse for the price anywhere, I love this mouse I'm on my second one but only because I accidentally severed the cord! GREAT BUY!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars apparently she did not notice it HAS a cord; it is NOT wireless:
(see: my kitty and I love this mouse!!, November 4, 2003.) No hard feelings; i have made the same mistake before in a posting. I have one. Works well/ ok. I do prefer logitech, though. The administration should feel free to delete this along with her posting, or modify hers by deleting her last line, as her description is physically incorrect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Size and weight makes a difference for an optical mouse!
Actually, I bought this after my first optical mouse -- that I've had for about five years or so -- finally burned out.The lights do eventually quit on these things.

4-0 out of 5 stars One flaw, otherwise pretty nice mouse.
I just plugged this mouse in yesterday, so I don't have a long history with it, but my first impressions are these:
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mouse as expected.
I bought this mouse to replace my previous Microsoft Wireless optical mouse. My old mouse lasted for about 5 years and was still working perfectly. It was just a bit worn down in appearance because I abuse it alot with gaming, etc. I wanted a mouse that was as good as my previous mouse, so I purchased this one which is nearly identical. The only real difference I can see is that the new mouse has the tilt wheel function. It is handy but takes me a little getting used to. I still try to click it and drag pages horizontally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another GREAT Logitech product
I upgraded from a Logitech Marble (which still works perfectly after a year, I just wanted to go wireless). This is slightly bigger and has a larger ball. Your hand position is also a little different, which, to me, seemed very akward and uncomfortable at first. However, after about a day, this one became second nature and I couldn't imagine it being any different. I LOVE IT!

I'm really enjoying this device. It has made many tasks easier. One thing I will note is that the right mouse button is difficult to use where it is positioned. The button layout is flawed in this regard. However, I was able to reprogram one of the other mouse buttons under the thumb to function acceptably in this role. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars After using it for 2 years.
It was nice mice I used.
5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Optical mouse
Have been using this mouse from 2003 until just this month in 2006 when the right button stopped working and I had to find a new mouse. For the three years of using it, this has been my favorite mouse ever. It is a simple design, and there isnt much extras on it, but I have loved the shape and weight of it. Plus the blue/grey color is pretty sharp looking, in my opinion.
5-0 out of 5 stars well pleased
I am very glad that I ordered this mouse, and I'm sure I will tell everyone about it. Thank you. Debbie ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I really like it
This is a pretty good mouse, I can't really expound more than those below me but, It is almost the perfect size, maybe just a tad big but, nothing to cause problems. It, in my opinion, is defenitaly not too heavy, it is actually suprisingly light to me. I installed it and it didn't work, I un-installed it and re-installed it and it worked great so, I am thinking it was just user error. This is a really great mouse, my opinion, buy it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sluggish scroll wheel and no 'click' feedback, but overall good
A decent mouse.I have used it at work for the past 2 years.I've had to change the batteries about once every 3-4 months which isn't too bad.
2-0 out of 5 stars Flakey and terrible range
I have to have my mouse within a FOOT of the reciever for it to work at all, despite Microsoft's claim that the range is three feet. Perhaps my mouse is defective, but then that speaks to the poor quality control of Microsoft products. These are designed by Microsoft but made in China, and I can honestly say both are obvious from using it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic mouse
Works exactly as described, good price, what more would anyone want of a mouse?Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest but not the worst.
I'm on my 2nd Microsoft Wheel Optical Mouse and heading for my third. I like the MS mice and have been buying them for years. The price is right and I've always liked the heft and feel. I had a hard debate between three and four stars. New these things rock. Once they get a couple years on them they tend to start double clicking when you only wanted to single click (disasterous in this virus heavy world) and the scroll wheel tends to roll by itself randomly up or down. That being said, I've already added it to my wishlist and will more than likely be buying my third within the week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mouse!
The Microsoft Wheel Optical Mouse is an excellent mouse!I have a white one that I have had for 4 years. It is just now wearing out where I need to buy a new one.It came with my computer.I love it! It is very comfortable for my hand and it never needs to be cleaned! One thing that I have noticed that you need to watch out for is the little black pads on the bottom will come off over time.Usually they can be easily put back on and it would not harm the mouse at all to put a drop of glue on one of the pads to hold it on.I love my Microsoft Wheel Optical Mouse! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Strikes Back

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best wired optical mouse
This mouse is great for gamers. It's original version was very, very good with perfect response, nicely tactile buttons in perfect positions and light weight. The new version is as good as the original in most ways and adds several great features to an already wonderful design.First, the new electronics inside this mouse triple the accuracy with 9000 samples per second (compared to the originals very respectable 3000).It moves even better because Microsoft changed the feet on the bottom to a very slick material and used a thinner, more flexible wire.I know these sound like little things, but they actually do make the mouse "feel" nicer.Speaking of feel, the mouse is now covered in a soft, rubbery material. One of the few gripes I had with the original was the cheap plastic construction, corrected very elegantly in this new iteration.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!
Prior to MS re-releasing this mouse I had been searching for the older x08 model online via eBay.I saw them going for $100+ sometimes for a brand new one!I had almost given up since the Laser 6000 mouse was such a flop.I was so ecstatic when they said they were going to re-release it.I saw it available a week or two ago and I bought four.Once I purchased it the next time I saw that it had been changed to pre-order.I thought that was strange but I actually received it in two days. It's the same exact mouse from prior years except for the color change. The buttons feel the same, the mouse acts the same, everything is pretty much the same.Yes, the scroll wheel has dedents so that you can know if you're switching just to the next weapon or whatever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mice.....
Iliked it very much. Have it for past 3weeks. no propbs, easy configurable, ergonomic. great options to chose for the buttons
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mouse
I'm a motion picture editor and use a mouse all day long. I've tried many input devices. This is by far the best. Very smooth and responsive, great software for the Macintosh, and a low height off the table, which is important ergonomically (you want your wrist to bend as little as possible).
5-0 out of 5 stars Versatile: 5 Buttons, USB/PS2, Ambidextrous (symmetrical)
This is my current favorite mouse.I've been using them for probably five years now, on every machine I own (and several I don't).It has two buttons on top plus the scroll wheel (not a newer tilting one, just a straight up-down scrolling action) plus two buttons on the sides, which provide forward/backward browser functionality (like hitting Alt-Arrows).The software makes most of these programmable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very comfortable
This is the most comfortable mouse-type input device I've ever used. Of course, that's only out of a few other trackballs and a whole lot of mice. But it allows me to keep my wrist more neutral. It tracks very well. If it gets gummy, the ball is easy to pop out and clean on my shirt. After several years of use, I've lost one of it's little rubber feet and the nonslip coating on the surface of the dark gray area in the center is starting to peel away.

5-0 out of 5 stars review for optical trackball
I've been working with a trackball for eons.Had to replace the one I was using because hey...evolution means USB!This trackball is fantastic. It's so smooooth in it's movement.I had already bought one for home... and bought another for work.Go for it. you'll love it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Kensington trackball mouse
The placement of the right button is esthetically pleasing but physically uncomfortable as it interferes with the holding of the mouse and negotiating the trackball. I continuously have to reset the menu that pops up when I accidentally touch the right button. It needs to be moved so the hand doesn't rest on it or have to be held up off the mouse to keep from hitting it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love his little guy
This mouse is great for laptop use on the go. It comes with me everyday on the train and on buses on my way to work, and still works with no problems after a couple of drops and banging into things. My only complaint is the dimensions on this page are way off. The mouse is very small, for my hands I basically use it with 2 fingers, but it works great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok...for short periods
I have used this mouse for 3 months with my laptop.Look/feel and general use are fine for short periods of time (~< 1 hour). However, I am currently shopping for a replacement as this mouse has one problem:Intermittently, after clicking/double-clicking, the mouse will go into a "move to the left" mode...and will continue to move until it reaches the edge of the screen.Sometimes it will move to the upper-left.This is so inconsistent as to be unpredictable.I will often (at least 10 times in a 30 minute period) have to give the mouse a wiggle to stop it from continuing.Frustrating if you are trying to click through a multi-level menu, for instance.Another example is if you working on any CAD-type or image editing project where you need to insert a line one segement at a time (mouse will move when it feels like it).
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice but didn't last long
It is a Nice little mouse ideal for laptop use because it is not as bulky as its bigger brothers, and the retractable cord is very useful when storing the mouse in the laptop bag, But mine died just after a year of use and web support was of no use. Because of this i can't say this is a quality product and i give it 3 stars.
