4-0 out of 5 stars Always plays the first disc
Just received this played last night. So far, so good!
3-0 out of 5 stars Yikes! What have I got myself into
Its pretty much been well reviewed here. Just to reiterate some points and clarify a few others. First off, this player DOES play DVD-R disks, I know, I have done so! Plays just fine if you know how to properly burn a disk, DVD-R can play ;-)
4-0 out of 5 stars One of my best purchases this year...
I'll leave all the ultra-technical reviewing to those folks who possess the knowledge to do it correctly - although I am bright enough to use this unit, if I attempt a "technical review" I'll remove any doubts you may have about me being an idiot.Instead, I'll just describe my experiences and pass along my impressions.I have a large DVD collection - 1200+ and growing daily, so a large capacity player like this is exactly what the doctor ordered.I was amazed of how long it actually took to physically remove 400 DVDs from their case, hand record them on paper by title and sequence # (don't scoff - this ended up being one of the smartest things I did), and then load them into the player.Next, I optimistically pressed the "LOAD" button, hoping all my DVDs would be scanned and have their titles and other info programmed into the player's memory.Approx. 2 hours later the process finished and I hit my first disappointment - of the 400 DVDs, less than 10% yielded data.I contacted SONY's product support line to find out if this was normal, I was given a "techno-jargon" answer that I really didn't understand, but the bottom line (or so I was told) is that the problem is with the production of the disc - some scan and produce data, some don't.That meant "Plan B" - manually inputting the rest of the titles and other info. (see - it was a good idea to have a numerical list of exactly what was where!) IF I would have had a PS2 keyboard, this process would have went much smoother - I didn't, so that meant using the remote, it was easy to do, but very, very time consuming.Of course, an hour after I finished, we had a violent electrical storm, and the entire block lost power for several hours - the longest period of time without electricity in this house since sometime in the 1960's.Go figure, and yes, I was cursing. The good news is when the power came on, I hadn't lost any data at all - the next day I contacted SONY again (just to learn how long the memory will save the data without AC power) and I was told that this model will protect ALL your saved info for 30 DAYS!!That is cool to know.Other than these MINOR inconveniences I have nothing but good things to say about this player - once I got all the info put in, I've been doing nothing other than enjoying it.It produces a terrific picture and great sound - the HDMI connector helps keep things tidier with using just the one cable, while transferring HD quality imagery.I was starting to worry when they began to release all the new technology - the Blue Ray HD discs and player - I mean, I have over 1200 DVDs, that's a lot of investment - do I start collecting the new stuff, get a new Blue Ray player, etc.?This DVP-CX995V takes care of that problem - at least as far as I'm concerned.I'm fortunate to also own a SONY 40" LCD Bravia - model #KDL-V40XBR1 - which is a HDTV - so with this player and that TV, the outcome is a picture so clean and so clear, even if technically it falls a few pixels short of being called "true HD" by the "techno-purists" - I defy anyone to compare it's picture to a picture generated from a HD signal and point out ANY significant differences. So with those 2 units, I also have one of SONY's home theater systems (part of their "Dream Systems"), so I am quite content.I like this player a lot, it works great, it's easy for someone like me to use, and with my collection - it is very nice to scroll through my menu and choose any one of 400 movies with one push of the button.Actually, I like this one so much, I am probably going to invest in more of them - as my collection grows larger, it will be nice to store a lot of these movies.Plus, I should add that I do have an illness that keeps me bed-ridden most of the time, so being able to select all my movies with the remote IS more than just me being lazy - not that it matters, but I guess I just didn't want anybody thinking - "dang - that guy is so lazy he don't even wanna get up to change his movies".Seriously, I am very partial to SONY, but, so far, this has been one purchase that I've been real happy about - I was a little nervous at first, wondering just how well a 400 disc player would work, but it works great. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Not bad for the money, aka, you get what you pay for.Disappointed in the player being slow to load DVD's (~20 seconds per, 20+ seconds to go between discs). Most disappointing is the fact that it does not play HD-DVD.It is not advertised to do so, but why build all the support for HDMI, and not support HD-DVD?My guess is, they put the wrong kind of drive in it, and thats why it won't play SA-CD's either. On the plus side, it was easy to setup, and plays scratched DVD's that our other DVD player won't.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good value, BUT does NOT play SACDs
Video and stereo sound is great from this unit. No complaints there. BUT if you are looking for a SACD player this is not it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fine value
This is a really fine product. Minutes to set up, flawless reproduction, seamless performance. I'm not sure what the reviewer above me meant by it doesn't do SACD though he/she might be right about it not being in the manual. SACD will play in a great many DVD players with optical (as the Sony has) or co-ax digital audio out. I've had this player five hours and have not been able to stump it with a format or a less than stellar condition DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition
The HDMI video picture is first rate. The sound quality is amazing playing CD's.The only downfall is that you cannot shuffle music, but then you can't with any CD/DVD combo.Only issue I am having is with hooking it uo to an HDMI switching component.Signal won't go through component, but I don't think the issue is with this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it! - But man is it slow opening up.
I wasn't crazy about getting a five disc player- I preferred a quality single player, however, none were available in black offered by Sony with the features I wanted.
3-0 out of 5 stars What is that White Line?
I love the 5 discs carousel dvd changer. It doesn't look bad either. However, I did not notice much difference on the picture quality using the HDMI input compared to the component connection I was using before. One thing that I do not like about this new Sony is that everytime there is a caption, a white line appears on and off on the tv screen.I do not know if this unit is defective or has incompatibility issues with the rest of my system. To be safe, I returned the product to Amazon and they were considerate enough to agree in reimbursing the shipping cost. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars expensive-BUT YOU DONT GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!
This DVD/CD/VCD changer is THE MOST expensive one we have ever had. But it is by far my least favorite. Stopped working after 2 months of ownership. We played a DVD then puff, that was the last one. Laser skating protector is also weak. The disc still skates. The player also had trouble playing burnt DVD's. What a piece of ####. please dont waste money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful unit
I researched what was the best 5 disc changer and this has all the needed features. Continues to get high marks from various consumer groups. Sometimes I have trouble with the automatic play the next dics but I think that is due to a setting I have incorrect. This is the second one I have purchased. First one the power switch is bad we think and it was less money to purchase new than fix. Will probably fix first on the cheap and give to a friend. Then if second one does same thing we know how to fix it.
4-0 out of 5 stars Works well, but tricky to set up.
I received this unit via my home insurance after my RCA 5-disc changer was stolen.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Incompatibility Issues Whatsoever!
Ever since I discovered this player in the summer of 2005, I have been highly impressed with how much it met both my normal and oddball demands. As a student of Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical vocal and choral literature, and Jazz and Classical piano, DVD-AUDIO and SACD capabilities are of great importance to me because there are a lot of titles especially in the Classical genre available in these formats. One thing that sets this player apart from the other manufacturers' players is Yamaha's CD UpSampling feature. For those titles which are currently only available on CD and possibly will never be released on DVD-AUDIO and/or SACD, this option converts standard CDs to the quality of DVD-AUDIO.On the Musical Theatre, Opera, and choral side of things, this player is capable of playing both NTSC (North American) and PAL (European) DVDs on corresponding as well as opposite TVs.For certain titles in these genres, the North American editions are either four percent slower in tempo and picture movement and flatter in pitch than the European editions due to the method of PAL-to-NTSC conversion used by the distributors of such DVDs, or do not include as many bonus features as their original European counterparts.Sometimes, it can be the other way around, except the European editions might be four percent faster and sharper and have less bonus material than their original North American counterparts. On both ends of the spectrum, if the audio pitch is corrected without changing the audio speed to keep the picture and sound in synch, a subaudible breaking-up effect may be noticed as the result of slight artifacts from slightly bending or stretching the pitch in the conversion process. However, because of this player's bicompatibility with both color systems, I have the freedom to choose and purchase whatever editions are the best.Although it is not in the manual, this player can be made multi-region compatible including RCE DVDs.Turn on the DVD player.Make sure there are no discs loaded. With the tray open, using its supplied remote control, slowly press 99990.Wait for the 'Region 0' message to disappear.Close the tray. Now you can play any kind of optical disc without thinking about it.The only little flaw with this player's firmware is that when the 'All Discs' repeat mode is selected, when playing DVDs, after playing through all the titles, instead of moving on to the next disc, it returns to the home menu.If Yamaha could do a minor revision to the firmware which engages that same menu bipass as when repeating a single DVD, the machine would change DVDs automatically.I discovered this by reauthoring DVDs without any of their menus using DVD Shrink Version 3.2.In conclusion, if you are looking for a DVD player with one hundred percent compatibility all across the board, you have come to the right place!*In fact, I currently use one of these in my bedroom, and by the spring or summer of 2006, I plan on either going the separate component route and getting another one for my livingroom, or more than likely, getting its integrated home cinema counterpart, the Yamaha DVX-C700 because of how great Yamaha's DVD technology is.*Others have reported problems playing 'Dual Discs'--a type of disc which includes DVD-VIDEO on one side or layer, and CD DIGITAL AUDIO on another, also known as 'Hybrids.'However, big names, such as Panasonic, Sony, and Pioneer, do not recommend using these discs in their players. This is not to be confused with 'Hybrid' type SACDs, which many, including the Yamaha DVDC750 will support. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DVD disc changer
I all ready have 3 other Sony products operating from one remote. There were no other command controls to add a 4th Sony DVD changer,so I picked this Pioneer disc changer. It stacks up great to the Sony changers I have.Very easy to use right out of box.The one con I can see is once DVD's are loaded I can't seem to find an eject button to remove a DVD if I wanted to.The price was a little higher than the Sony 400 disc DVD player I own but I see no reson not to buy this one.Especially if you only need one and not 3 or more. You can also daisy chain two of these together and have all controls for both in one remote.Again I use a Sony intregated remote commander RM-AV3100 which allows for up to 18 products to be programmed into it.

4-0 out of 5 stars reliable but with a few glitches
I bought this unit to hold my entire library, which it does, but won't in a very short while! The machine has never had any malfunctions such as jammed discs and it gets a very good workout.sound and picture quality are excellent. My number one complaint is that the settings spontaneously change, indicating that the machine is plugged into a widescreen TV.I have a 4:3 TV, but all my movies are widescreen. For some aggravating reason, the player will spontaneously start showing the widescreen movie in FULL screen because it thinks the TV is a WIDE screen unit, even though i have set it numerous times to 4:3!!then i have to stop the movie and change the setting back (for the 30th time) so it will play properly.also, they could have allowed more characters for title input, but that is a minor gripe.the user interface can also be a little clumsy, but i can't complain too much about that either.I would recommend this machine even with its comparitively high price tag.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great with one small problem
I have had a Pioneer carousel FV727 in a master and slave configuration for about 3-4 years now.About once a year the slave looses all of it's programming.I have to go back and enter all my DVD titles again in the second unit. They stay in there for about a year or so, and then dissapear. Please help.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DESTROYS DISCS, BACKUP YOURHOME MOVIES
I CANNOT BELIEVE NOBODY IS WRITING TO COMFIRM THAT THIS PLAYER WILL LEAVE GOUGES IN SOME OF YOUR DVD DISCS MAKING THEM UNPLAYABLE AND UNABLE TO COPY. I'VE OWNED THIS PLAYER FOR 2 YEARS AN ONLY RECENTLY SAW A REVIEW WARNING THIS MIGHT HAPPEN AND IT HAS. THE PLAYER WILL SAY DISC IS DIRTY AND AFTER CLEANING THE PLAYER STILL SAYS DISC DIRTY THEN ON INSPECTION YOU'LL SEE THESE HALF MOON SCRATCHES AROUND THE EDGE. PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOUR HOME MOVIES IN WITHOUT A BACK-UP COPY STORED!!!

Ever since I discovered this player, I have been highly impressed with how much it met both my normal and oddball demands. As a student of Musical Theatre, Opera, Classical vocal and choral literature, and Jazz and Classical piano, 192-KHz, 24-Bit conversion is of great importance to me.One thing that sets this player apart from the other manufacturers' players is Yamaha's CD UpSampling feature. Now you can play any kind of optical disc without thinking about it.The only little flaw with this player's firmware is that when the 'All Discs' repeat mode is selected, when playing DVDs, after playing through all the titles, instead of moving on to the next disc, it returns to the home menu.If Yamaha could do a minor revision to the firmware which engages that same menu bipass as when repeating a single DVD, the machine would change DVDs automatically.I discovered this by reauthoring DVDs without any of their menus using DVD Shrink Version 3.2.In conclusion, if you are looking for a DVD player with high video compatibility*, you have come to the right place!*Others have reported problems playing 'Dual Discs'--a type of disc which includes DVD-VIDEO on one side or layer, and CD DIGITAL AUDIO on another, also known as 'Hybrids.'However, big names, such as Panasonic, Sony, and Pioneer, do not recommend using these discs in their players. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding DVD player with an outstanding price tag!
The Sony DVPNC80V was purchased to replace my aging DVD/receiver unit that was beginning to fuss. I ordered this new DVD player from Amazon and had it in less then a week. From first glance, the unit seemed of very sturdy construction and was surprisingly light for its size and features. Setup was very straight forward and easy to comprehend. Once completely setup, I popped in a DVD and although it took a couple seconds longer then other DVD players, playback was immediate and flawless. The unit can also be controlled by my SONY STR-DE598 remote with NO programming right out of the box!! So now I can control both with one remote, much to my wife's delight. All in all, this is an excellent unit for its price, especially being able to utilize 5 discs in the carousel and MP3 playback. I have not found one movie that has been backed up that will not play. I would reccommend this unit to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars bought a used one for $60 inc. shipping
im the type of person whos not gonna buy a brand new item if i can get it used for half the price n it works just as well with only a few unnoticeable blemishes on the appearance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD/MP3 changer at any price
I chose this for two of its features: the 5-disk changer that lets us watch different disks without having to get up to swap them in/out; and its ability to resume playing a movie after being turned off or using other disks. It does both of these very, very well.

Editorial Review

The Toshiba SD6915 five-disc DVD player offers up a whole host of advanced features in a sleek, silver package. The SD6915 is fitted with Super ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video (digital 3:2 pulldown) outputs, allowing for the highest-quality video signal to be sent from the DVD player to a component-video-equipped 480p TV for the smoothest, most filmlike images. When the player is utilized with an HD-ready set, typical NTSC artifacts--like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker--are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with excellent color purity. Working alongside is its 192 kHz/24-bit D/A converter to deliver warmer, more natural-sounding audio from many types of discs, including multichannel DVD-Audio and Super Audio CDs.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Hateful J-U-N-K
What kind of moron designs a 5-disc changer that WON'T PLAY ALL FIVE DISCS without pushing the "disc skip" button to go to the next one?
1-0 out of 5 stars The worst purchase I have ever made.
This player is the biggest piece of CRUD I have ever seen. It locks up, the picture goes in and out and the remote is a train wreck! We had another Toshiba player for years and it was a workhorse, but it finally met its match (my 2 year old) so we bought this model and we hate it! There has to be a better model and Toshiba usually makes such great stuff, so this is a bit of a disappointment.
2-0 out of 5 stars Psychedelic remote
The piss poor remote layout and user interface is why everyone else is complaining about this DVD-player.Toshiba engineers must have got bored with the older layout and decided to improve it by using submenu to control things.I previous owned a Toshiba sd-740 and I love the picture images and ease of use of the remote.Issues of the layout is the small IR range of the remote, to get it to work you got to point at it straight and level toward the right side of the machine front panel. To bookmark a chapter, find a chapter, you got to hit the submenu and go from there, how inconvenient not to be place simple commends on the remote. To forward and slow backward you have to press and hold down the next and back chapter buttons respectively. What happened to the other length of the movies options display?

1-0 out of 5 stars Only good for a year or two
I have been through a number of Sony DVD players, most recently this one. After a year and a half, it just quit playing all discs.Keep looking, there must be a better quality product out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Picture quality was fantastic
I got this after having first tried the Samsung 1080I-720P with DVI connection.I have a Toshiba 51in. HD ready monitor. the Samsung was very expensive, and the picture quality did not impress as it should have (highest quality connections). Bare in mind, with that unit, if the DVD was recorded in the highter resolution, it was fine, but did little to improve older films.5-0 out of 5 stars Picture quality was fantastic

1-0 out of 5 stars BADplayer- very unreliable. Money pit.
Bought this player because we wanted to be able to play one disk daily and then other disks occasionally without needing to insert and remove the daily exercise video. This player seemed to fit the bill.3-0 out of 5 stars Good and the bad

1-0 out of 5 stars complete waste of money!!
I currently have a Toshiba TV and love it. I thought I'd purchase a Toshiba DVD player since I love my TV. I have completely wasted my money on this piece of junk. DVD's skip, remote sometimes does not respond, sometimes a DVD will freeze. I put the same DVDs in another DVD player in my bedroom and they all worked fine with no skips/freezing. As alot of the other reviewers said, I agree.....your just throwing your money away here.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst
I discounted the bad reviews on this site and bought this DVD/CD player in July. We have been using a sub fifty dollar model for a couple of years and I wanted to replace that and our CD changer with one unit. I wanted to go with Toshiba because we have a Toshiba TV, I thought we could use the new remote with the our old TV and consolidate some remotes.
1-0 out of 5 stars Cheap price buys cheap performance
I got this to stop getting up all the time to change disks in my single DVD player. Now I'm getting up lots more trying to get this to work. Other reviews say it's slow to respond - they aren't kidding. Push "open" to access the tray and it grinds away for ten seconds deciding what to do. More often than not it'll stay closed and go back to the movie. Sometimes (not often) it freezes completely and has to restarted. Being cheap, it doesn't remember where it was and you have to scan through the movie to find your place. Also ultra susceptible to scratches/fingerprints so the picture stops and jumps frequently. Avoid like the plague. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good enough DVD player with 5 disc changer
I bought this one year back. Since then I have used it for all types of CDs/DVDs. It delivers what it says. Pretty much impressed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Broke down on me within 8 months
This piece of junk broke down on me within a year. It began stuttering on playback and skipping on perfectly good disks (that played perfectly in my other players). The warranty only covers parts in the first year so I would have had to pay for labor to get it fixed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worked great for 9 months
In the first 9 months we had it, it was great. Picture quality is amazing when hooked up to a 50" plasma. I really love the multi-disc feature because you can watch a movie that's on more than one disc without getting up to swap discs out. This is particularly handy when you are watching a TV show.

3-0 out of 5 stars Denon DVM 1805
Purchased this to be both a CD changer and a DVD Player. The sound is good and the video is great. Unfortunately, the system has no sequential play mode between disks even though it holds five. If you put five CD's in for instance, you can only play one CD then it stops. To play the next CD you have to physically tell the player to switch to the next CD and start it.The same problem occurs with DVD's so for instance if you have a 2-CD Lord of the Rings, it will not sequentially play the second DVD. This is a bummer as I've come to expect better from Denon. ... Read more
