Great in v.90 with Windows XP drivers
When my old Aceex ISA hardware-controlled modem started malfunctioning a few years ago, I bought the USR 5610B to replace it.It is still working great.
Horrible modem for XP
This modem connects well, I have no complaints with connections, it's the call waiting feature.That feature fails in XP for me and the tech support is ridiculous.To make this feature sort of work, it needs a string, but US Robotics tech support doesn't seem to know that.I had that feature working for over a year and then with I upgraded their Call Notification, it failed completely and I can't make that feature work at all anymore.I gave this modem 1 star because the only reason I purchased it was for the on hold feature.

I Like this modem
It seems this modem needs some encouragement from a satisifed user; and that would be me. I've used this modem for over a year now, and am very satisifed. When I first installed, it always wanted to connect at 52-52kpbs. However, that speed almost always ended in a dropped connection due to a line error. I configured the modem settings (in XP) to only connect at 48kbps. At this speed, I never, ever get dropped calls, and the stability is wonderful on V.92.

Blah... barely adequate.
Setup was pretty quick. It's designed to be a no-brainer. We got it up and running and were able to retire my Microsoft router too because this unit is both a modem and a router. That was good.
Doesn't Work With All Major DSL Providers
I would have given this product zero stars, but that wasn't an option. I am a Verizon DSL customer and I assume they can be considered a major DSL provider. Recently, the Fujitsu SpeedPort modem that came with my service went belly-up so I thought I'd try purchasing a replacement myself instead of waiting a week for one from Verizon. The ActionTec box states clearly that the modem works with all major DSL providers. At least in my case, this isn't true. I installed the modem, however, it was unable to recognize a signal from my DSL line.

Nothing special
I've had this DSL modem for about 6 months. I got it free with Earthlink DSL service. I can't guarantee that any problems i've had are all modem-related because there's the signal itself to consider, but i do tend to lose synchronization often. It happened more before i bought a Belkin router, but it still happens occasionally. In addition, i was hacked (Win2K with no firewall) prior to buying the router so i have to strongly recommend not using this thing without a firewall of some kind. It has both a power button and a reset button, but i find only the reset cures any async issues i have. Turning it off and on only turns both the DSL and ACT lights off (both need to be on for Earthlink's service to work properly). Not much you can do as far as controls. It's a pretty passive device.

I recently lost the internal modem of my G4 tower to an untimely lightning strike. Seeing as the machine was off warranty I could have brought it in for [an expensive] bench charge or simply bought an external. I chose the latter.Read more
