JVC's XU-301BK combination CD/minidisc player-recorder is a recordingenthusiast's dream machine. It plays back three CDs or a single minidisc, letsyou brew your own custom digital recordings, and even lets you mix CD with linesources (such as the input from another CD player), CD with microphone, or linewith microphone sources when recording. 4-0 out of 5 stars Don't cram too much on a disc
Read the reviews below, but be alert to an issue with this recorder. If you put more than 20 tracks on a disc, the edit functions (move track etc) won't work on these higher numbered tracks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Feature packed, sounds pretty good too.
Addition to my review (4/2003):The player has started flaking out- not recognizing CDs are loaded, trays refusing to open when open/close button pressed.Unplug/plug required to clear- but only temporary.Update 8/2004: I had this repaired at a local shop for about 80 bucks and now it works fine- they said the "timing" on the trays needed to be adjusted.
4-0 out of 5 stars All in one
I like my XU-301 a lot. It has it's flaws in the handling butthey are easily forgotten when compared to the features you get. Ipayed for mine here in Sweden, replacing an old Denon DCD-620. Maybe the audioisn't the best but it matches the Denon at least.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product - best MD recorder in class
OK, I have reviewed the comments here and "an electronics fan" has skewed this product unfairly due to a reliance on software made by Micro-soft. I own a Macintosh computer, so there is no software for this product. This didn't matter to me, as I have a recording studio built into my computer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Speechless!! This product is so great I couldn't believe it
I received this md player as a gift and it has been, by far, the best gift I`ve got. I read a lot of reviews coplaining about the software, well I can tell you it coudln't be easier to use, it's quiete simple, so much you do not really need to go to de manual to get the hang of it. The md has a really nice design, specially this model, because of the recharchable battery, which is very slim, aside, this kit includes so many usefull accesories you wouldn't believe it. The sound quality, even at the lowest bitrate, is awesome, so you can record the so promised 5 hours on each disc without really loosing sound quality. In short...a great product overall.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to transfer recordings to PC ????
I bought this recorder for recording purposes. To me, it does a great job in offering the sound quality that I really need.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dismal Failure/POOR Quality
I did buy this Nov 24, 2000 (I have the receipt) as a gift for my son. Almost immediately it began skipping, ignoring tracks, or not playing entire discs. I found that some low-end minidiscs (such as Hi-Space) will not play on these low-end players [see alt.audio.minidisc]. I did, however contact Casio and they quite cordially gave me all the information to send it in under warranty. Haven't got it back yet, but we'll see how it acts upon it's return. Just be aware that there are known problems with this and other low-end units [see xxx for complete write-ups and comparisons]

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice price but poor performance
This product was quite disappointing. The player skips often and the life of the batteries is short. One Duracell will play one 74 minute MD.The sound of the system is fine when working. The headphones are poor.

2-0 out of 5 stars great price, looks good, sounds good, but....
when i first opened up the box and listened to it, I thought it sounded great.I liked the remote thing and everything else.I then noticed that it wouldn't play half the tracks on my minidisks... they play just fine with my other player. So i returned this product. As far as minidisks go, Casio does not seem to be one of the major players and i believe i know why now.Maybe it was just mine but i returned it in a matter of an hour of recieving it... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A decent, inexpensive field recorder
Since this unit has been discontinued for a couple of years now, I'm not sure anyone is even reading this review! For those of you who are, all I can say is that I have three of these, all bought on eBay for about $60.I use them for recording local choirs and also for recording the rear two audio channels when I do surround-sound recording with my HDV camcorder on documentaries.
3-0 out of 5 stars Price gouging????
I bought a Sharp MD MT15 from Circuit City in August 2000.I paid $179.99 for it.There is absolutely no difference between that unit and the one shown here. Why is this one so expensive?
1-0 out of 5 stars MISLEADING PRICE

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value for $$
I got this MD player as a birthday gift and I can't stop using it! I can now get all my Mp3 files onto a tiny disc!5-0 out of 5 stars Buy a MiniDisc player now!
The Sony MZ-E25 Portable MiniDisc Player was the first and the best player available for its price.Music is just the start of minidiscs.Don't bother buying a DVD player.Movies and computer games and programs are thenext applications to be utilized on minidiscs. These minidiscs are goingto be the future of digital information.Their excellent skip protectionand inability to be scratched is just a few of the reasons to purchase one. Buy one now to get a head start on the craze.

3-0 out of 5 stars Shop around before you buy sony..
Although Sony is the creator of "MiniDisc" and has release several diffrent models of Minidisc Players and Recorders, i recomend you shop around for diffrent brands before you buy, I bought a sony Minidiscplayer model (MZ-R50) sold on the Brand Name and the sleek sexy design,(it's orange), Now its broken, after a few months of use the rightheadphone channel stoped working, I can't say that i have lost trust insony as being a good manufacture but they don't stand behind thier productsas well as they say. the price of getting it repaired was estimated to betwice the cost of the player itself because of labor. You can buy anaffordable Panasonic or Kenwood Minidisc players for a better price. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Tapeless digital audio recorders have been around for some time, but until recently, the devices were hard to use and only recorded a few minutes worth of audio. Panasonic has changed all that with the introduction of the RR-QR240, a tapeless audio recorder that stores up to 266 minutes of audio and is easier to use than many of the cassette-tape recorders we've worked with. 5-0 out of 5 stars A handy, robust, high-quality product
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review for Model QR200
I put a lot of value in your reviews so I thought I would share how happy I am with my new digital tape recorder, Panasonic Model QR200.Although mine doesn't have quite the capacity of the QR240, I am very happy with its performance. I can only assume the QR240 is just as nice with more capacity.1-0 out of 5 stars Keeps on breaking
I have a Panasonic RR-QR240 and a RR-QR80. The QR240 was purchased in Oct 2000 and the QR80 was purchased in August 2001. The QR240's speaker went out. I had to put a headset on it to hear messages. I purchased the QR80 to fill in while the QR240 was being repaired. It was promptly returned to me by a service center out of Georgia. Their repair lasted about three days. So I put it in the drawer and continued to use the QR-80. Today the microphone when out on it. So now I have two of them that broke. In just over a year I have spent about $200 on units that do not work. Try a Sony. ... Read more
