1-0 out of 5 stars Olympus has NO quality control!!!!
I bought this Olympus recorder at a local electronics store (circuit city) and had to return the first one, since the record/playback head had a problem staying in physical contact with the tape. The playback volume would drop down in volume since the head was not snug against the tape during playback conditions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Does what I want it to!That's all that matters!
I am a musician, and I own an eight track digital recorder for completed musical ideas, but sometimes i wake up at night with a vocal or lyrical idea that i just don't want to forget.I can keep this handy little recorder by my bed, that way i won't forget my great ideas. This product does what i want it to do, it helps me get my ideas out so that I don't forget them the next day.I heard that the idea for the opening riff for "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones was recorded as Keith Richards awoke with an idea in his head.It has been said that all that could be heard on the rest of the tape is Keith snoring! lol!! this may not be that very recorder, but it'll do fine by me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great bargain even if 'old' technology!
If you are a student and just need a cheap, good quality recorder for classes- like I did- this is a real gem. Its just a plain old fashioned tape recorder- but compared to digital, the sound of this recording is excellent. For techno-freaks, be aware: It doesn't hook up to your computer to translate from recorder to printed notes via voice recognition software, it isn't the size of a pen (although it IS pretty small and lightweight), and it won't stand up on your desk and tap dance. It'll just make recording your lectures a cheap and easy proposition. As an aside: you will need a little adaptor ($2 on Olympus website)in order to use standard headphones with it (it has a mini-mini plug port, which is not standard) or else you will have to listen to it out loud.At this price, I think its worth grabbing these up while they last and while Olympus hasn't discontinued them yet (assuming that digital will eventually cause them to discontinue all 'tape recording' machines). So, even though I like computer stuff and have lots of gadgets and gizmos myself, I ignored 'image' and was very happy with this inexpensive little purchase!Footnote: I would have given it 5 stars IF it had a tape counter (this model doesn't) and IF it included the adaptor for standard headphone plug OR had a standard size port so you wouldn't need their own brand headset or adaptor. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars good price, but not very durable
I am a professional transcriber.I do not recommend this for anyone who transcribes on more than an occasional basis.Yes, the price is very good, and when I first bought one I was happy with it.But it broke down very quickly.I had to keep unscrewing and opening the bottom of the (very cheap) foot pedal because the pieces inside that were supposed to connect to cause the tape to move would come loose. Also you have to press play and THEN use the foot pedal in order for it to work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great time-saver!
As a psychology doctoral student I have to transcribe many therapy and interview tapes for various reasons. This machine has dramtically cut the amount of time needed to do that.I was hesitant to spend the money on a transcritption machine as they are not cheap, but I'm glad I did!It was money well spent and I'm having more time on my hands as a result.I highly recommend investing in one of these if you have to transcribe audiotapes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Bargain
I am extremely happy to find this product on Amazon.com, since the retail office product stores don't seem to be carrying such items anymore.Of course, there are more "bells and whistles" that one could desire in such a product, but considering the price, this product is an excellent offer.I was amazed at the speed in which this product arrived at my address once I placed the order. All in all, I have always been very satisfied with Amazon.com, and this purchase did not change my opinion one bit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The only machine I have ever needed.
I own this machine and have used it for the past 5-1/2 years. I transcribe several hours a day, 5-6 days a week. I have never had a single problem out of it. Our other transcriptionist uses this machine as well and has for the past several years. I would highly recommend the Panasonic RR-930.

2-0 out of 5 stars Works very well while it works.
I have worked with quite a few of these transcribers over the years and this would be my least favorite. It works well for a while, but then the rewind and fast forward goes out on the foot pedal and then goes out on the machine itself.Normally transcribers last longer than these seem to.A co-worker has gone through 4 of them in 2 years. We keep asking administration to switch to a different brand, but they say these are cheaper. You get what you pay for, I guess. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT!
I have used this recorder for 3 years now, and it's still going strong! It may sound funny, but I use it as a log of sorts.I take it places I go, and record where I'm going. It really brings back the memories when you listen back on the tapes.I wonder if anyone else has done this.... - I've bashed and banged this thing around, and the audio is still crystal clear! My favorite tapes are the Panasonics, but Sony's tapes are also good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reporter's Take
I bought this tape recorder less than a year ago and I am already in the market for another one. First of all, don't believe the product description. This would be terrible for recording lectures. Even if you are right up against your interview subject, if there is other noise in the room you will not pick his voice up clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little recorder
I got my recorder about 3-4 months ago. So far, so good. I have used it for voice recording with good results. I also like the fact it has jacks for ac adapter, external microphone and earphones. It takes standard cassette tapes. To me that is a plus.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Recorder!
Great recorder! The playback sound (voice) is amazingly good at 3x recording speed. It's much, much better than my Sony microcassette, even when the Sony is on the normal (best) recording speed. Like another reviewer mentioned, one drawback of 3x is you can't play it in your car deck (but who has those these days?!).But you can record 12 hours on one 120 minute tape at 3x speed!6 hours a side. That can be good and bad; good for the capacity, bad to find specific spots, eg. the beginnings of things you tape. So, I think 60 or 90 min tapes might work better.I've also heard the longer the tape the greater likelihood of jamming... and, the tape quality itself is lower because the tape has to be manufactured thinner to fit the longer length/s in the cassette shell.
3-0 out of 5 stars cassette reviewer
I bought the RQ-L31 from Circuit City(in their store)for a total of about $38.00; with no AC adapter or batteries. This recorder has a sensative microphone(built-in)that will pick up birds singing from a neighbors yard! The mic has two positions(up or normal); and it's difficult to tell the difference between the two settings on recordings. The voice activation record has two settings, one is for quiet, distant sounds, the other is for close-up sounds. I have used the RQ-L31 for voice and music recording. It's better at voice recording! It will record music, but a speaker that it not even "2"; just can't reproduce music that well. Also, volume output seems to be lower than most hand-held recorders; although it is totally clear, even turned all the way up.The design puts the speaker in the cassette door.Where you insert the tape(the door)is where the speaker is. I would have to say, that the recorder is not worth the $34.95 that it sells for.It does allow you to use an external mic, and it is shuts off at tape end very quietly.I have a GE mini cassette recorder that has much louder sound than the RQ-L31 by Panasonic. The GE only cost $19.99 at Walmart. It has voice activated recording too; but instead of normal or 3X normal recording length, the GE 3-5364A model has louder volume on playback, and variable speed playback control. If turned up past 75% volume, it gets distorted. The GE also tends to pick up the tape motor sound more. So, the Panasonic RQ-L31 is better at less tape noise recordings.RQ-L31 uses standard size cassette tapes, and has an LED battery level indicator(3 red lights). It is light weight and feature packed, but buy it with the understanding that it is primarily designed for voice/lecture recordings. Circuit City carries the RQ-L31 in their stores.Tape door is awkard to load tapes in, but you can get hang of it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars cassetteman
This recorder has a problem of having too much tape motor noise in the the recordings; especially on high setting for microphone. Low setting of mic, causes it to not hear the sounds as well; though tape motor noise is reduced. It can record Church concerts, although it will not be pick up distant voices that well. It will drain batteries if used about 45 min 5 days a week.As far as voting buttons; no one has ever told be how to insert them; not even Amazon.com will tell me. So I don't have any voting buttons. I don't recomend this unit, if tape motor noise, background noise, and inability to pick up faint sounds bothers you.I have one, and use it mainly to playback tapes of Church concerts, or radio recordings(using the mic) that I have made. Sound quality is ok through speaker, but you can connect it to cheap, amplified computer speakers for better sound. It can vary playback speed from normal to very fast with a speed knob. It can be set for voice activation recording, but you will hear a pop everytime it goes on/off in the recording. It can be bought for only $19.99 at most stores; and uses 2 AA batteries. It can accept an AC adapter, but adapters add a soft hum to your recordings/playback. This recorder can be fun for the kids, with the variable speed playback. For serious recording, pick another recorder other than this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Serviceable - but cheaply made
I have had this recorder for a few years for business purposes.I mainly record notes with this as a full sized cassettte b/c it has a better sound quality than the micro cassettes and can play the audi back on my home stereo system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks Cheap,But.....
Just received the RN-505 in four days from Amazon (super service). The Micro Cassette Recorder is well built and the NiCad batteries and AC adaptor are nice accessories. The unit, for its size, is very comfortable in the palm of my hand. Easy to reach controls, but hard to read since ALL is painted silver, including the letters. And this is were I would rate it a three(3). The plastic casing, all painted in silver, gives this excellent recorder a CHEAP look. It looks like a $20.00 Micro Cassette. However,in this case, looks ARE deceiving. Although cheap looking, it is a nice piece of equipment. Highly recommend it IF looks is not the important issue.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average
I've gotten a good bit of use out of this microcassette recorder. However, by no means is it something special, though I do really like the battery recharger/AC adapter.Of all of the tape recorders I've used, this is EXACTLY the same recording quality as the others.I would have given this 4 stars but then I thought about how much I paid for it and realized that it was way overpriced...of course one could argue that they all are...and I'd agree.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance, confusing controls and instructions
This recorder is very small and highly sensitive. Not having experience with the newer recorders this was a surprise. The picture does not do it justice for its petite size.It measures 7/8" wide, 2-5/8" wide (including button tops) and 4-5/8" tall. This would be an easy fit for a front shirt pocket with plenty of room for extra pens.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars OK for a while, then it stops working
I bought this recorder for college. At first it worked pretty good, sound quality isn't great, playback is a little fuzzy and distorted, but overall it was good considering the price. Now after a couple of months it only works when it wants to.It will be fine one day, and then the next it won't play the tape back, or it won't record at all.I thought it was the tape, but it does this with all the tapes.I replaced the batteries so it's not that either.I have lost hours of lectures because of this thing.I am buying a digital recorder to replace this one.Hopefully that will be more reliable and maybe even last me the entire semester!!

This model RN-305 is a complete disappointment.I purchased it to replace a model RN-108 which unfortunately was dropped and broken. The replacement doesn't even come close to the original.I have tried all settings...speed, voice activated, etc to no avail. The replay of recorded voice is not natural and there is always a continuous whiring or hissing in the background. The similar microcassete it relaced had no such annoyance. Recordings from the old recorder sound ok on the new recorder so obviously the recording properties of this new recorder lacks any quality. Can't even return it due to a 3rd party that hides behind Amazon.com in the wood-work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive & handy
I ordered this & received it within 24 hours, WITHOUT asking for expedited shipping!I didn't even realize it had Voice Activated recording until I read the manual. The other reviewer was right - it comes with 3 cassettes & a pair of batteries - awesome!Sound quality is fine, and the mic picks up everything - it even picked up the sounds of me moving up a flight of stairs while it was tucked into a back pocket.I highly recommend both the item and whoever shipped the thing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Cheap but worth it
I bought this about three years ago and it is great. I can use it to record school lectures and it picks up everything real nice. Unless you listen to what you recorded with headphones or some other external speaker you will hear a lot of background noise. Once you put on headphones though all background noise is gone and the voice comes through clear. I have even used this to record my kids complaining about homework l so I could play it back for them later and have proof of what they said. The kids don't like it but as a perent it is a good tool. As a student it is a good tool too. The only thing that I don't like about it is having all thes little tapes laying around, if there was a way to download the conversations on a disk it would make things easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, Clear Quality
I have had this for 5 years and it still works great. In a normal setting (like a room), it records very clear. I recently used it underneath a big stack of clothes to record friends for a school project and I could hear everything just fine. The only times I have had not so clear recording is outside and in my car, and it still produces good audio. Note however, that this was still with the volume at a normal level. If it is turned up all the way then the audio quality is diminished, but there is no need to have it up all the way. This was my third microcassette recorder. My previous two had broken within weeks of me using them, but not this one. Also, the battery life in this recorder is great! I don't remember the last time I had to change the batteries. Definately a good deal!

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Choice
Records a loud and persistant background noise. The Voice Activated Recording on my unit did not work. It records continuously even in a very quiet room. The microphone is not strong enough to record a meeting. Realized after I opened it that it does not have an automatic reverse function. I plan to return it to Office Depot. ... Read more
