why TI doesn't slap a high-res color LCD and large flash memory on these things? Maybe make them half the thickness and weight. What, would it cost an extra [...] for them? We have come quite a long way in the last 10 years... This technology is overpriced and stuck in the early 1990s.

This advanced graphing calculator is packed with more features than you might know how to use. The TI-89 Titanium lets you perform the expected functions of an advanced model--basic math, algebra, calculus, graphs, matrices, and statistical functions--and do cool stuff like creating animations, graphing 3-D rotations, and plotting contours. Graphing functions include basic function graphing, parametric graphing, polar graphing, sequence graphing, 3-D graphing, and differential-equation graphing. Additionally, the TI-89 Titanium includes symbolic manipulation, constants and measurement units, statistics and data plots, a numeric solver, a text editor, programming capabilities, tables, a split-screen function, variable management, and the ability to link to other calculators or a computer.Read more

  • All of the features of the popular TI-89, plus extras
  • 188 KB RAM, 2.7 MB Flash ROM, 16 programmed applications
  • 100 x 160 pixel display with split-screen views
  • USB and I/O ports; includes USB and TI cables
  • Approved for AP, PSAT/NMSQT, and SAT exams

1-0 out of 5 stars A lot of hype, but it quickly fizzled
Bought this product recently based on recommendations for an advanced math/ scientific calculator.Apparently, TI has almost all the schools eating out of their hands by having classrooms make these calculators mandatory in many classes.
5-0 out of 5 stars TI-89 Titanium For Statistics
Pros:
5-0 out of 5 stars For calculus and beyond, perfect!Anything below calculus, this is too much!
After using a TI-83 Plus calculator for the last 5 years, I decided to upgrade to the TI-89 Titanium. This calculator is unbelievable in its features and power. First of all, it is more suited for advanced math, such as calculus and beyond. This calculator is NOT meant for high schoolers who are taking algebra, geometry or trig classes. If you don't know what a derivative or an integral is, then save your money and buy a TI-84 instead. (Besides, I believe most high school math teachers ban the TI-89 on tests) This calculator can also run programs in its Flash memory, which can be downloaded from the TI website. A USB cable is included standard. TI has made the newly designed sliding cover much more secure than the old TI design (TI-83 plus, TI-86, TI-89 regular), whose sliding cover was not very secure and became looser over continued use. The cover is very hard to get off the first few times (I was almost afraid of breaking it off), but over time it has gotten easier. Switching over from the TI-83, the only problem I've encountered is the operation of this calculator is very different from the 83.The menus are different, the interface different, different buttons. It takes a while to get used to. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Calculator Overall
This is a pretty powerful calculator that's in the same league as the TI-89. And if you prefer RPN, like I do, then you'll have to go for this one. The build of the calculator is much improved from the HP 49g+ and the feel of the keyboard is similar to that of the HP 48g, although the keys are harder to press and the legends are painted on instead of double shot molded. The calculator does feel sturdy but the plastic makes it feel cheap. The symbolic integration and differentiation doesn't always work well and some nasty integrals will give nasty results. The TI-89's table lookup might work better for some integrals but I'm sure this calculator can integrate some integrals that the TI can't handle. However the calculator is much faster then the older 48's and the CAS is much improved in terms of usability. 3D graphing is so smooth and fast... although I doubt I'll be doing anything heavy on a small calculator when computers are prevelant. This is not a perfect product, but neither is the TI-89 or the HP-48G. Highly recommended for any scientist, especially the chemists out there who hate math, like I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power for now AND the future
I have been an HP calcualtor user for the past 22 years. After I went through two battery chargers on my dad's TI-59 that he gave to me, I gave it back to him and bought an HP 41CX.I'm STILL using that calculator today, and I use it virtually every day.
5-0 out of 5 stars An HP Calculator to be Proud Of
I thought that I would never own another HP graphing calculator after I purchased an hp49g some years ago.I am a huge fan of RPN and own an hp33s which I think is great for its features and usability. The hp50g is not for the beginner, this is a power calculator for college students in math or engineering, professionals, and firmware hobbyists. This calculator just works out of the box.The keys are firm but responsive, unlike the hp49g which required lots of force to activate the buttons. Also I haven't been able to find any errors in the calculations, also unlike the hp49g which required a firmware upgrade to correct blatant math errors.I think this latest model restores some hope for hp's future offerings - it's not just a printer cartridge company any more... ... Building on the hugely popular TI-83 Plus, which is perhaps the best-selling calculator of all time, the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition is completely compatible with the TI-83 family. 4-0 out of 5 stars TI Voyage 200
This calculator offers a comprehensive set of mathemeatical and statisitcal features suitable for advanced students or professionals. If you have work which demands this kind of flexibility and computing power it is a must. The package is comprehenise and supplies all of the compents needed to get started. One review I read suggested that the usb cable was not included; it is.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Calculator - Terrible Software
I have owned my Voyage 200 for several years now and use it for all sorts of things, from managing my investment portfolio to analyzing engineering data. This is a great calculator until the daycomes that you have to update the operating system. I have been forced to update each time I have added a new application to the calculator, as new applications won't run without the latest version of the operating system. The update involves wiping out everything you happen to have saved in memory: programs, data, applications - everything. TI supplies an archaic software program to load the operating system and applications. It brings back memories ofthe 1980's when using a computer really did require a computer scientist. With enough time, effort and preplanning, it is possible to save your data and actually get it back onto the calculator close to the way it was to start with, but make sure you have plenty of time and patience pills.

5-0 out of 5 stars The last claculator you will ever need!
I didn't have to have this calculator until 9th grade when I took Algebra 2.It has been the most reliable thing I have ever bought in my life. It's not needed for any level of math under Algebra 2.I'm now a college sophomore and am still using this calculator.I've been through trig., calculus, and stats. and it has been a lifesaver in all of them.I couldn't imagine taking those classes without the calculator. It is extremely durable.I don't know how many times I've dropped mine and it is still working. My one very important suggestion is that after purchasing your claculator, you should engrave your name or initials on it because a lot of them get stolen in school because they are so expensive.

3-0 out of 5 stars TI T183 Graphic Calculator...school required waste of money!

This calculator is good and is designed for pre-algebra and algebra students. However it is a very old model and has been discontinued. Most schools now use the newer TI-83 plus.

4-0 out of 5 stars TI-82 vs. Other TIs
TI-82 Is great, I think!?!?? Am returning to college after 30 years. Decided to start with basic mathmatics. Will do Intro to Algebra next semester. On to a Math degree. I am preparing an alternate career to the one I am employed in. I am anticipating a lay off. Thought I would try teaching . . . Math! Anyway, can anyone tell me will the TI-82 do ok for Algebra? Then I could use my money to buy a TI 200 or 92 or 89. Use at home if I can't in class/tests. And . . . I inherited a TI-82. Long story. Please email: kerux@centramedia.net

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a pile of junk.
A $150 calculator that I am going to trash.I had the same problem with the keyboard (terrible response); I struggled with it for about a year and then called HP.My warranty was out, so Hp suggested I install an update, which I did.Now the keys are firing off 3 or 4 digits with one press of the button. This is ridiculous.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't know what has happened to HP
I got this calculator about a year ago. There was some locking up problems and sometimes it would not turn on. I updated all the ROMs like HP instructed. Finally, I got a replacement from HP. But it turns out it was some old refurbished one that the enter key smashed in after I used it for 10 minutes. I had to pay to send this one back and now, they sent me another old used replacement. Most of the gold paint has flaked off the front of this one and also around the side trim. It started missing keystrokes with the latest ROM, so I had to go find an old ROM from last year on the Internet. The keyboard is piss poor and makes a "thunk" noise, annoying when I am taking a test and to the people around me. Also, the right shift key started feeling loose today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but good enough
I'd recently bought an HP-49G+ and was terribly disappointed, both by its overall poor design and extreme complexity. I wasn't expecting much from the 39G+, but it really surprised me--especially given the low prices it's been going for lately.
5-0 out of 5 stars worthwhile
Calculators as the H.P. 49 II, H.P. 48 II, T.I. 89, or T.I. 92 are beyond the average high school or Junior Collage student's needs.

(more than likely would be my next purchase if I did buy another one) the sad thing is resources for this calulator are limited seeing as it's been discontinued but you know it's still more powerful with it's computing power over my GF TI-83 plus. it just lacks the storage of memory. ... I purchased mine for $49.Its suitable for any classes through college algebra. For trig you'll want to upgrade as it doesn't graph polar coordinates though it does convert rectangular to polar and back.If you needed to you could program it to input the (x,y) into a parametric graph and so display the results.1-0 out of 5 stars Memories?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Elite of the Ultimate
Never a better caluclator in existance.
5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Calculator Ever!!
I am not too happy that TI stopped releasing operating system updates since it's basically the same as the 89 and voyage 200. Other than that, its awesome. The QWERTY keyboard and function key layout is good. The large screen is good. It takes AA instead of AAA batteries so it lasts longer. Pretty print, symbolic manipulation, algebra, and calculus... just awesome. It also does a lot of stuff with units which has been very helpful in several of my enigneering courses.

1-0 out of 5 stars NEEDS HIGH CONTRAST DISPLAY!!!
I'm sure the capabilities are wonderful. That's why I bought it. But, it was so difficult to use - because I couldn't see what was on the low contrast (even with adjustment) display - that it wouldn't have mattered if it had outclassed a Cray. I couldn't program it without getting a headache from eye strain. If it had a decent display, it would be great. Without reasonable input and output display, it is just a piece of junk! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stack is different. This required learning
To store '5' on the HP48 line of calculators, hit 5 [enter].It's stored. You can even see where it's stored right away because you're always looking at the bottom four stack entries. It seems the previous reviewer believes that the way TI does calculators is the way calculators should be done.If that's you, buy a TI.Storing a value in a named variable is a fundamentally different way of thinking about calculation from the way HP decided to do it.5-0 out of 5 stars The Mercedes Benz of Calculators
Being a college professor of Electrical Engineering for over 30 years, and having used numerous brands and models of calculators and having written reviews of some of them for various publications, there is no doubt in my mind that the HP48GX is indeed head and shoulders above all the other calculators (even the HP49).The RPL entry system is a natural and easy to learn process that mimics the pencil and paper approach that we've all learned in Grammar school arithmetic. The efficiency of input and the ease with which it handles comlex-number calculations is second to none.Formulae can be entered with mixed units and the calculator automatically performs internal conversions to present the answer in whatever valid units you desire. It handles 2-D and 3-D vectors with all the corresponding mathematical operations seemlessly. The infrared connectivity (wireless) and RS232 port (wire) both allow communication between another HP calculator and your computer. This calculator has the right mix of 'function per key' versus 'menu per key' that makes it very easy to negotiate.5-0 out of 5 stars HP and RPN Entry

4-0 out of 5 stars Depends on what you need a calculator for
If you are in grades 4-8 this is a wonderful calculator to explore and formalize your understanding of the math concepts. It has many nice features. However if you need a graphing calculator that you will use through high school use the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition. If you are purchasing during your high school years you may want to consider even starting with a higher caliber calculator than this as a TI-83 Plus will not take you through very many college level math courses until you need something more substantial in available functions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good calculator--but I would save the money for a better one
Well....this calculator has many features for middle school students, butreally is it worth it ? If you're in middle school, then you probably won'tneed such an expensive calculator, because you really don't need to use acalculator to graph. If you are learning graphing, you might not be able touse it one the test. In my opinion, I would buy one of those cheaperplainly scientific calculators. They get the job done and they are cheaper. But, if you really want to get a graphing calculator, I would suggest theTI-83 plus. Right here on Amazon.com, it being sold at $86.99, CHEAPER thanthis one and with more functions!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The TI 73
The TI 73 is the best. At least in my opinion, it is the best for all thepeople in Middle School. If you are in Middle school at this moment and youneed a graphing calculator for math or science, don't go out and spend alotof money on another kind of calculator. The TI 73 is fit for the job! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My faithful calculating companion
I bought mine about 10 years ago, and I still have it and use it extensively. It has seen use all through pursuing my undergraduate degree and my Ph.D., and in my current work. I have used it for calculating things related to computer graphics, statistics, data compression, and a host of other areas. It has always been up to the task. It is loaded with useful functions and does a lot. Sure, it's not as fast as a more modern one, but it's more than adequate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Used to own one. Durable but some graphing problems.
The good thing about the 48 and other HP's I've owned is that when I have broken them they were actually stolen or lost. I can't say that about the TI-86 or TI-83's I've owned and paid a considerable amount for.HP's seem to be made to last; I hope that hasn't changed. The weakness on the HP48G that I owned during the 90's when graphing calculators came out is that the graphing functions were not as well designed nor worked as well as the TI's. They seem to have improved the latest models so they act a lot more like the TI's. It's something to consider if you are buying an HP graphing calculator from the mid 90's when I purchased and then lost one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fine craftsmanship!!!
HP calculators are built to be used by professionals. They are built to a standard of quality you seldom see anymore.Unlike calculators from other manufacturers, people who use HP calculators tend to use them for a VERY long time!I have had my HP48g for 8 years now and it still measures up to the competition.YES RPN entry is different BUT it is FAR MORE efficient to use in lengthy or repetitve computations. Unlike Casio,Sharp, and TI, there is a tremendous amount of professional grade software for scientist and engineers widely available. There are games too. The HP48g is solid and it has an IR port as well as a serial port for connection to a computer or other device. This calculator is a powerhouse! If you are a science or engineering major and you want to be serious about your trade then this has to be a device you own! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Had it for 18 months, then keyboard started to break
Pros: This calculator (and presumably other HP 48/49 calculators) has an operating system that far surpasses TI's in usability. The angled keys are really nice to use, when they work.
1-0 out of 5 stars why not get a HP49g+? Look at the price!
at the time of writing the HP49g+ is available on
3-0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your 48GXs
I had high hopes of this calculator being a "real" 48G, maybe with a faster processor running an EMU, but the original case/key design and ROM.

Actually, at first I was a hesitate to buy the ti-81.Finally, I had made the decision to buy it.I find that it's worth every penny.I love it.Trust me, this calculator can do almost everything like the ti-83, except that it doesn't have as much memory as the ti-83 and the ability to transfer info. However, I find that the ti-81 is every easy to use.Not bad at all!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Calculator
I needed a good graphing calculator quick, and this one really does the job. It's just as good as the later models, don't waste your money on the more expensive ones. The batteries do go pretty quick though.I have to constantly adjust the contrast due to low battery power.

2-0 out of 5 stars TI-81
If you need a graphing calculator for a calculas class this may do the trick but I recommend the TI-82r a higher model. This calculator did not have the features needed for my college class but it may be ok for a high school class. See what features you need and then buy it. The only good thing about it was you cant beat the price. ... Read more
