Crash Test Dummy
In Dec 04 received one as a present. In June 05 it started shutting off on its own and then stopped turning on all together. Lost a weeks worth of sailing and diving in the Bahamas. Returned it to the store, bought a new one. It was handy and familiar thought I would give it another try. Since then it has dumped my saved Points of Interest THREE times. Now the other day it crashed and defaulted to to a screen called "Burn In Test". Fortunately it did this after I copied off my latest Points of Interest. Now I have a Garmin eTrek Legend.

this is my first GPS, its working very well for me, u can trace the way your walking then inverse it to find your way back, you can convert the trace into routes, it has the usa map, but the map wont work in mexico, it will only give you the main roads of the country. good stuff

good for what it is
I see a lot of reviews saying, "Good entry level GPS!" I do not agree with this statement at all. With a GPS you should always START with the best one you can afford that does what you need. That way you are not buying one to practice on just to realize you need another one. Then you are out of $100 for your "entry level" and $400 for the fancy pants Garmin. I own two GPS systems which are exactly what I need for the applications I use them for. If you need to do these things and nothing else. Buy this one and don't worry that you cannot monitor barometric pressure (I am a meteorologist and I don't need a barometer or a thermometer). Here is what this one will do wonderfully for you. If you are anywhere and you get lost. This one will easily get you to a city, lake, river, interstate, highway, or major road.My main reason for this is to save locations for future use such as: good fishing spots, tree stands for hunting, important businesses, etc. What makes this GPS so practical is it's simplicity. You cannot load a bunch of useless stuff on here that will just slow it down. Who really needs topo? What is great about hiking is NOT knowing what is over the next hill. Another great thing about this unit is it is light weight. I backpack with a lot of folks, some of which are scared of anything that weighs over half a pound. These same folks haul a huge, heavy GPS handheld in their backpack and never use it the whole trip! Another cool thing you can use this GPS for is bicycle and motorcycle application. It is easily mountable on a bike. The screen is large enough to be easily read on the go and the backlight works well at night. It won't hurt this thing if you crash either. It is built like a tank. If it starts to rain, you do not have to worry because it is almost totally waterproof. In everyday application, I keep this thing in my cargo pocket. If I find a neat store or a great view along a mountain road I can quickly save the spot, give it a name, and cool little icon from the list. Get Lost ! - it's easy with this software
We just returned from a trip to France where we had a rental car for 10 days and covered about 2000km.
Auto Traveling in Europe - A breeeeeeeeze
In 2004, had to buy Autoroute from English merchant for more than twice this price - and it was worth it. On arrival in Calais, to departure from Paris three weeks later (thru Reims, Bastogne, Strasbourg, Dijon, Caen, Paris, Bordeaux, Rennes, etc, this gem (with a GPS unit) offered continual real time "this is where you are" as well as "re-calculated routes" to get us where we wanted to go, no matter how many unplanned detours we took.Would never travel without it...
AutoRoute 2006 - town data missing
The program is nearly the same as Streets and Trips for the US. It's generally good but does not include many of the streets in towns in Ireland where I used it. Excellent for going town to town but real deficiencies in the towns when looking for specific addresses. ... Read more

LCD No Longer Works Right
My son spent his hard earned money on this in January.He liked how it worked when he used it.He put it away for the "off" season and when he got it out last night to get ready for this weekend's hunting, the LCD screen no longer works.It comes on, but is so light that you cannot read it.I should have known not to let him buy a product with only a 90 day warranty.It is not "rugged" from our experience, but a $180 paperweight.Any chance of getting this fixed?

This little guy does great at getting me back to where I started in my boat.The instruction manual isn't great but I figured out how to use it and I am not a computer genius.Great for what I bought it for.

Don't get this GPS... get the Garmin Etrex Legend
I recently got this item for basic geocaching and navigation, and was appalled when I took it onto the field. When compared to 3 other Garmin GPS units (two of them legends), it gave completely different co-ordinates (longitude and latitude) and when we actually found the geocache, my explorist said that it was .16 miles in the opposite direction. Don't let the weather features fool you, I was in a WAAS zone and I got the aforementioned results.

Not road warrior friendly
The GPS unit is extremely sturdy, the magnetic mount is perfect, and the power adapter plug cover thingy is lost already (I've owned for a month).
GPS 10 - Good Unit With Some Shortcomings
The bluetooth GPS device works well. The fact that it is weather resistant and has a strong magnet for holding it on the roof of your car adds to the versatility. However, the plug which weather proofs the connector socket when it is not being charged is not attached and very easy to lose. Also, the software for use with PDAs and phones does not allow you to plan a trip on your desktop or laptop and then download routes and waypoints to the phone. With that caveat, overall operation is excellent.

Don't risk your life with this product !!!
This product could put user/customer's life at risk. The mapping software navigates user turning into a one way street and takes you to a very remote off-road. This is the worst product that I have used in my life.

You get what you pay for
The only redeeming quality about this GPS system is that it's cheap.I used it on a 1,000 mile trip on the east coast the week after I got it.The navigation is poor. I found that I often had to look over to the laptop screen because I was "off route" so often due to the poor maps. The system repeated the same annoying problems that I see in other feedback.

Works with everything. Great performance.
I prefer the PC version over the USB because of it's compatibility with everything. Even thought I don't have a serial port in my laptop I actually got a USB-to-Serial converter just to use the GPS18 PC.
Excellent performance, good value.
I found this GPS receiver while looking for a GPS to use in a home-built radio position beaconing system (Ham radio APRS for those of you who know what that is). I found the GPS 18 with cigarette lighter adapter and DB-9 serial interface. This GPS was quite literally plug-&-play. I supplied it power using the power connector and plugged the DB9 into my computer terminal, placed the GPS in the open, and a few moments later it was streaming NMEA 0183 position data to my computer. I didn't need to configure anything, no software required. The GPS works well connected to software such as TOPO to provide real time position tracking on your computer, and can also be easily connected to packet modems/TNCs/TinyTrak modules for APRS purposes. The magnetis a little weak, but the unit is light enough that it generally won't be a big issue. The connectors on the ends can be easily cut off for direct connection to a power source or your own homebrew NMEA device. However, you can also buy it with bare ended cables if you are looking to directly connect it to something.

Pretty unnecessary
Why would you need this?? iQ3600 12 volt charger
This is the second 12 volt charger I've had. Both have blown fuses in my vehicle, then the units also blew something since they didn't work anymore. Garmin did send the second unit at no charge since its under warranty. I'm now calling for a third unit!!!
