Great Idea - Lots Of Problems (consider carefully before buying)
I purchased the 301 in Febuary - It is now October and I am disgusted. From the very first day, heart rate monitor was very erratic (inspite of following all directions)heart rate will spike to beyond where I would be dead or sometimes totally dissapear during runs, for no apparrent reason. This unit is great for keeping general pace and distance of runs, however, it frequently says you are going too fast or too slow even when you are keeping a steady pace and this can be frustrating. The last problem, and gravest, is that as time has gone by it has gotten harder to connect and download the information - maybe moisture in the contacts? - I have talked to other Garmin owners and have heard similar complaints - this is a serious design flaw ! My unit is still under warranty - So I am HOPING that this company will honor its warranty. Anyway, If I was to do it all over again I would get a speed & distance monitor with foot pod technology (maybe from Polar) I have heard these are great. Forwarned is Forearmed and not Fore-Ripped off !
Freedom!
I bought the 301 from Amazon a few weeks ago, and it has worked flawlessly.Heart rate and distance both track quite well.
Exceeded Expectations
I was worried after reading the other reviews but didn't want to buy the more expensive models. As a result, I kept all the packing materials and documents when unpacking it (so that I can return it if it was as bad as the reviews made it out to be).

Editorial Review There are now enough handheld global positioning system (GPS) receivers on the market that you can be choosy when it comes to price, features, and design. Great Small GPS, but PC Cable is behind the times
I've been using the eTrex for about 2 months. All GPS functions work marvelously. However, the PC cable is a 9 pin female serial connector.I haven't had a computer with this kind of connector for over 7 years.Since I wanted to download my datapoints to a navigation program, I bought a "Serial to USB" connector from Radio Shack for $40.After installing the connector's software, my laptop recognized the connector cable, but not the eTrex connected to it.Best bet is probably to go with the Garmin cable for $60.Which is outrageously priced. Why they can't catch up with the real world of USB connectors is a mystery. For handheld navigation though, it excels.
Excellent with the caveats noted........
.......in earlier reviews. It cannot pick up accurately if you are too close to buildings, under trees, etc, but i really dont know too many inexpensive GPS units that work under those conditions. For the price an excellent choice.
Great entry level GPS
I'm very pleased with the accuracy and reliability of this GPS receiver. I've had to rely on the manual more frequently than I expected to and the mapping feature really isn't very useful, but for the price I paid, it's a great unit for my primary passion - Geocaching!!

Editorial Review Combining powerful performance-tracking features with a GPS receiver, the Garmin Forerunner 201 offers runners and hikers a unique way to track their exercise regimens and goals. Great Product
I love the Garmin Forerunner. It's one of the best little equipment I've bought for my marathon training.I'd feel blind if I didn't have it on.Makes running myself all the more interesting.I highly recommend any runner to run w/ this little gezmo.
A great product that works well.
Overall this is a great product that works well and does exactly what it should. The only real drawbacks are what others have mentioned already. The serial interface is a pain, but for a few dollars you can buy a cable on ebay that will convert serial to USB, so that's not a huge deal. The other thing is the reception. It is not bad, but definitely not great. In addition when you are going at a decent pace and then make a sharp corner, your info is way off for a few seconds while the unit realizes that you are not still moving in the same direction.I'm not sure if Garmin has fixed this with the new Forerunners, but this can be a pain sometimes when you turn a corner and suddenly the unit shows that you are barely moving!
Garmin 201 review
Great piece of equipment.I use it to pace my basic training unit at Fort Benning while on foot marches and during runs.I recently used it on a foot march during a pretty heavy thunderstorm.Being out in the middle of nowhere with heavy cloud cover didn't seem to faze it much.A bit slower loading in its location with the satellites, but it still worked.During this march, it was soaked in water and sweat. It also got a taste of some mud when our evac. vehicle got stuck on a dirt trail. However, I wasn't able to manipulate the "custom" pace alarm within my specified time.It only allowed me a 10-minute gap instead of a preferred 2-or-3-minute gap.The battery provides a pretty decent charge and the settings are otherwise easy to manipulate.

Editorial Review Just when you thought Garmin had cornered the market on powerful, affordable, and effective wrist-mounted GPS devices, here comes the Forerunner 205. The release of this device is a major achievement from a design and technology perspective. This isn't just marketing-speak; the Forerunner 205 is the most accurate, most reliable wrist-mounted performance and GPS tracking tool we've ever tested. Yes, it's that good. While no device this compact can do everything (yet), the 205 pushes the boundaries of what is possible from something strapped around your wrist. While the 205 doesn't offer heart rate monitoring, or connectivity with Garmin's wireless speed and cadence sensor -- for that, you'll need to step up to the Forerunner 305 --but it's a great way to get basic GPS location and performance data. The 201 is better and cheaper
I had been using the Garmin 201 model for over a year and was very anxious to get the 205. Since I got it, I find that the current pace is consistently wrong on the 205. The 201 is much more accurate when it comes to telling you the pace you are currently running at. The 201 does all the same basic things as 205 just as well and is much better on the current pace for some reason. The 201 is also about $100 cheaper and I would highly reccomend buying it, it is fantastic and a great value!
Garmin 205
I have had the Garmin 205 for over a month now. I have also used the 301. I like the 205 because it is smaller and more compact. I find it to be very accurate and finds the satellites faster than the 301. I walk under trees sometimes and have not lost the signal. It is easy to set up and read your stats. I have no problems with the rubber wristband. It is a good training device.
Great once you get a position
This is great for training. It's really nice to able to see your current and average pace. It's also nice that it can automatically start a new lap every mile (or other interval that you specify). It sometimes takes a long time to get a position, however.

A great device, for sure!
I am a new geocacher and this device is perfect.Even children can easily understand and operate this device. It is accurate to 10-15 feet of the cache in the city.It is dead on when there is little or no interference (West Virginia).I've even dropped it a couple of times and it still works like a charm. It is highly recommended in the forums of geocaching sites as well!A great device for the price.
I love this thing!
I just got mine and I'm extremely impressed with it. It's very easy to use (hint - download the instructions from Garmin's website and read them while you're waiting for delivery - this one is newer and does more than those instructions say, but it works the same way and you will know how to use it before it gets there). It's accuracy is more than what I expected. I can mark a waypoint and it will guide me to within 10 feet of it, sometimes within 3 feet. This is far more than what I need but nice to have that level of accuracy (in WAAS mode). It doesn't have the features of more expensive units but it has everything I need, and everything you would need to get you unlost in the woods. It doesn't do maps but I didn't want that anyway. You can't beat this unit for the price.
Excellent GPS
I bought the Garmin ETREX gps (yellow)and am very happy with it. In fact I went back to Amazon and bought two more, one for the wife and one for our son. It does everything it says it will do and more. Also very pleased with Amazon and the ordering, and handling. I have started to buy all my products through Amazon whan available.

Avoid Magellan at all costs.....buy Garmin
I foolishly bought a Magellan Explorist 500. Let's just say the best thing about the experience is that Amazon's return service is absolutely first rate. I was even stupid enough to replace my original malfunctioning Magellan with another, before returning that one too on the grounds that it was impossible to work with and didn't sync with my PC.
I regret buying it!
I bought a eTrex Vista C and a Mapsource CD for my recent trip to those national parks and I deeply regret it! Forgive my English, for I am not a native speaker, and my negtive attitude because of my frustration.
A NEWBIE WHO LOVES HER VISTA!
This is my first GPS unit that I bought in June 2006 after discovering the wonderful world of geocaching.Having zero experience with GPS, I spent a couple months researching devices and, most importantly, reading what other users were saying about their hand-held units. The short of it was that after all the info I had gathered, I decided on the Vista CX.It's a middle-of-the-road GPS unit-- I didn't want to go too cheap and end up having to update 6 months later, but I couldn't affort 700 or 800 dollars, either. This device fits perfectly.

Good unit for the money
I purchased the Explorist 500 on July 9th after returning my second Garmin Etrex Vista color screen. I use the Explorist for geocaching and am really impressed with this unit. The color screen and map is very good and I like the smaller size. The accuracy is great, even in heavy tree cover and aquires a signal very fast. I admit to being leery about the rechargeable battery, but it seems to hold up to a days caching just fine. At the price being sold, a very good deal for a color screen.
Good, with a few flaws
I've been happy with the device.I primarily use it for geocaching.
Explorist 500 - garbage
I just bought this worthless piece of junk through Amazon. However it doesn't start up properly, won't even compute my starting point and is, frankly useless. The only thing more useless is Magellan's customer service - no reply despite several emails. Trust my life to this piece of junk if I'm ever lost in the wilderness? No way. It can't even get me to my property line.

Great GPS
Finally, the perfect handheld GPS. The addition of microSD cards to the eTrex line has made the ultra portable unit the perfect companion to carry with you on all your adventures - land, sea, or trail. Although the unit comes with a 64mb card, I purchased two 1gb cards. When you own a Garmin Mapsource product, you are allowed to use it on up to two units. I already own Recreational Lakes and Fishing Hotspots, as well as CitySelect which came with my Garmin GPS V Deluxe which I still use all the time locally in my Jeep and on one boat because of the mounting ability and NMEA output. The GPS V, however, is limited to 19mb and is now utilized in the regions I most frequent. Unlocking CitySelect for the eTrex Legend Cx was simple at the Garmin website. I would recommend first updating the software in the unit to the latest version, which is now just a few keystrokes with Garmin's Webupdater software downloaded from their site to handle the large capacity cards. On one card, I have Recreational Lakes East and CitySelect for the entire Northeast and MidAtlantic regions. On the other card I have the remainder of the US and Canada. The cards are smaller than the fingernail of your little finger. The eTrex Legend allows you to enable all or whichever Mapsource products you want. When not using it on the road, I disable the CitySelect to take full advantage of the Recreational Lakes software. If you do not own a mapsource product already, then purchase CityNavigator which I believe Garmin has updated the most for the points of interest and new roadways.
great little versatile unit!
I found this to be the perfect balance between portability and car usage. It's bright enough and colorful in the car, yet small enough to carry around with you on a hiking trail. It takes a while to get a signal when it's starting cold, however, after that, say, if you turn it off to run into a gas station and then come right back out, it pops right up. Looses signal when amongst tall skyscrapers and under heavy duty forested trees, but I still gave it a 5 star review because that is to be expected.
move up from the original legend
I had the original legend and was not happy with the display.I was hoping to have the same unit with color and a few more options. The new unit will not share the power cord and you do not get half of the bike mount.I am also not happy that the speed no longer displays on the map page.

Survived driving in Italy
I just got back from a two week trip to Italy where I rented a car and drove from Sorrento to Siena. I also drove throughout the Tuscany region of Italy. I couldn't imagine driving in Italy without my Garmin 60Cx. I also used it for our walking tours in Rome. The only problems I encountered were with unexpected detours because of closed roads due to construction. Luckily I also had a good road map and directions for backup. I was amazed with the accuracy of the GPS especially when navigating through the numerous round-abouts and dirt roads that didn't appear on my road maps. I agree with all the previous reviews regarding the 60Cx - fast response, nice color display, versatility, etc. I also recommend purchasing the North American package that includes very useful accessories. The only reason I did not give this product a five star rating is the high cost of the roadmap software from Garmin.
Great for local / regional travel - not enough memory for long trips
I just returned from a trip to Europe. For our trip we flew in to Rome, drove to a rural area an hour outside Florence, spent a week there and drove to Florence, then on to Parma, the Loire valley and finally on to Paris. I purchased this unit and the Garmin MapSource European City Navigator v8 [CD-ROM] and offer the following comments.
Great unit but WEAK volume
Had to upgrade to the 60Cx from the 60CS due to the larger map file sizes discovered after upgrading to the new City Navigator North America version 8 software. Aside from having to buy a new unit, the 60Cx has a very weak alert tone volume. I rely on the tones to alert me to an upcoming route change, but the volume of the tones is so low, that if you have the stereo on, or are talking on a cell phone, you might not hear the tone. You'd think that Garmin could put a decent speaker in the unit and provide some way to increase or decrease the volume output. Believe it or not the volume of the 60CS was louder than the 60Cx, although still way too weak.

Crash Test Dummy
In Dec 04 received one as a present. In June 05 it started shutting off on its own and then stopped turning on all together. Lost a weeks worth of sailing and diving in the Bahamas. Returned it to the store, bought a new one. It was handy and familiar thought I would give it another try. Since then it has dumped my saved Points of Interest THREE times. Now the other day it crashed and defaulted to to a screen called "Burn In Test". Fortunately it did this after I copied off my latest Points of Interest. Now I have a Garmin eTrek Legend.
very good
this is my first GPS, its working very well for me, u can trace the way your walking then inverse it to find your way back, you can convert the trace into routes, it has the usa map, but the map wont work in mexico, it will only give you the main roads of the country. good stuff
good for what it is
I see a lot of reviews saying, "Good entry level GPS!" I do not agree with this statement at all. With a GPS you should always START with the best one you can afford that does what you need. That way you are not buying one to practice on just to realize you need another one. Then you are out of $100 for your "entry level" and $400 for the fancy pants Garmin. I own two GPS systems which are exactly what I need for the applications I use them for. If you need to do these things and nothing else. Buy this one and don't worry that you cannot monitor barometric pressure (I am a meteorologist and I don't need a barometer or a thermometer). Here is what this one will do wonderfully for you. If you are anywhere and you get lost. This one will easily get you to a city, lake, river, interstate, highway, or major road.My main reason for this is to save locations for future use such as: good fishing spots, tree stands for hunting, important businesses, etc. What makes this GPS so practical is it's simplicity. You cannot load a bunch of useless stuff on here that will just slow it down. Who really needs topo? What is great about hiking is NOT knowing what is over the next hill. Another great thing about this unit is it is light weight. I backpack with a lot of folks, some of which are scared of anything that weighs over half a pound. These same folks haul a huge, heavy GPS handheld in their backpack and never use it the whole trip! Another cool thing you can use this GPS for is bicycle and motorcycle application. It is easily mountable on a bike. The screen is large enough to be easily read on the go and the backlight works well at night. It won't hurt this thing if you crash either. It is built like a tank. If it starts to rain, you do not have to worry because it is almost totally waterproof. In everyday application, I keep this thing in my cargo pocket. If I find a neat store or a great view along a mountain road I can quickly save the spot, give it a name, and cool little icon from the list. For everyday use I would recommend this to anyone other than a civil engineer on a job site.

Good unit but not in the Southwest
This is a great unit overall, but the rubber bumper around the edge of the unit is a real problem for those of us who live in the Southwest. It appears that exposure to the sun and heat causes the adhesive to disintegrate.I have had my unit since April 2004 and in just over two years, it had to be repaired twice for the same problem.I have spoken with a local Garmin dealer who confirmed that other Vistas (and similar models) have this chronic problem.Neither the dealer nor the Garmin can offer any solution but to send it in and pay for out-of-warranty repair of $125.They have no recommendation for adhesives.I have written to Garmin and have not received a response.I think this is a serious design flaw that Garmin has failed to address.
Good feature set, but the well known flaw is very annoying, especially given the price
If you want a GPS unit for backpacking, this one (or the newer color version) has among the best feature sets.Downloadable maps, an altimeter, an electronic compass, etc. It's a Cadillac, unless you step up from the eTrex line to something beautiful but horrendously expensive like the GPSMAP 76CSx (super duper Cadillac). However, a few things need to be kept in mind.

darnit
Ok so when I bought this here on amazon I was in a hurry ..I thought this was a talking unit and its not. It would be good for a truckdriver etc but not for my needs. I need a voiceunit not just a small display
Flawed display
I really wanted to have a favorable experience with this device. My daughter has one and seemed very pleased with it. As a geocacher, I was looking forward to using it on a trip to Colorado.
Garbage after the 3rd month!!
Bought this worthless piece of junk through Amazon. However after the 3rd month it doesn't start up, frankly useless. The only thing more useless is Magellan's customer service - no reply despite several emails. Buy this product at your own risk,,hope that it won't be defective like mine.

Great product, but only last for a few weeks.
I bought my first Forerunner 201 2 months ago.It had so many wonderful functions, I purchased 3 more immediately for our running team. After 2 weeks, one went dead. Then, one by one, three went dead.Amazon is excellent in replacing new ones. But even the replacement broke down after a few weeks. I really like the product, but now I am looking for other options - Timex Distance+time, or Nevman.
My husband loves it!
I bought this for my husband who ran his 1st marathon last fall. He can keep on pace, see his accurate distance, tell how many calories he's burned, etc. I personally don't have much experience with it, but my husband says He loves it!
Very tempermental and often innacurate.
I recently purchased this unit to replace the wireless computer on my bicycle. Out in the open the unit often works fine. Any time you venture onto any trails or urban areas with tall buildings the unit fails miserably and you get the GPS tracking error.

GPSMap 76CSX
This is my first GPS receiver and I do love it.I will not go into all the pros, as others have already done that.I did want to share some cons:
Satisfied User
I found this device to be relatively easy and comfortable to use (one-handed, no less), and accurate to within 15' +/- under tree cover of greater than 90% mature alder and fir - once locked onto satellites under clearer overhead conditions in Seattle WA and using an external Gilsson antenna mounted atop a hat.Satellite aquisition under the trees did not happen the few times I tried. The display is excellent under sunny conditions.Downloading waypoint data into a text file was simple.I haven't used it yet under driving conditions, so I can't speak to using related features. Were it damaged or stolen, I'd buy another one without hesitation.
Garmin GPSmap 76CSx, Great GPS!
I highly recommend Garmin GPSmap76CSx unit to anyone looking for a GPS unit for the road, hiking and/or boating. The numerous menus and features are very intuitive and easy to use. The hi-res color screen may be small compared to in-car GPSs but is very clear. The time for the satellite lock is relatively quick.Even while indoors, I can get a lock on at least 3 or 4 satellites.Buildings with metal roofs or concrete floors above may not get any reception. This is expected of any unit.

Love this GPS
Long Battery life, great display, easy to use.easy to configure the screen to see the info I want to see.
My favorite GPS
This is a fantastic unit. I own 3 GPS units. A Magellan 2000XL, a Garmin GPS V, and this unit. I use this unit far more often than the other units. It's light, accurate, and very easy to use. I really don't miss having maps at all with this unit. I use it for hiking, and dirt biking. I can't think of anything negative to say about this unit. I find it simply perfect for backpacking where weight is an issue, as long as you bring a map which I don't mind at all. Plus carrying extra batteries isn't an issue since it uses AAA's which are lighter as well. I highly recommend this GPS.
Worth the research!
I did a lot of internet searching for reviews on the Foretrex and other handheld GPS's before I plunged, and having been the proud owner for three weeks am happy to say that the 101 I have is close to perfect for my needs - recording long distance hikes and geocaching. I live in Portugal, where detailed maps for hiking are almost non-existent, and motoring Sat Navs give up as they cross the border (well except in cities), so I can live with the lack of mapping on the device. Signal strength is good and even though WAAS is not available here I often get accuracy figures of about 4m. The Field option list for display is very comprehensive, and I haven't thought of anything else I might need, except a capability to do split times on the Timer - and you probably could if you knew how!! If the Timer worked more like a conventional stopwatch it would have been better for me, but sailors etc probably think it is perfect.

needs more detail
You will need to buy Map-source maps ($100+) to make this thing worth the purchase. I needed GPS for boating but the base maps are rudimentary, ie; no inlets, rivers, shoreline detail or lakes. It is although very accurate and easy to use, nice big screen and good reception. If you need GPS now this unit is an excellent value. I payed $199 a month ago and now its $169 but that's my problem.
Great product
My husband and father both have this unit. It's really handy to have on road trips and to use while Geocaching. From our experience, it does take a while to download map information onto the unit, and a color screen would be nice, but for $200, I think it's a good value.
GPSMAP 76 great value
With the rest of the GPS devices shifting to color, the large b&w screen on this unit means money well spent. It's fast enough for practically any use. I've been using it in South East La. post-Katrina, Where those piney back woods were often blocked by debris. In New Orleans I used it to avoid blocked roads and to mark entry points into closed areas. I live hear, and the suroundings were so disturbed and displaced that even my own home-town was very disorienting. The backtrackand routemaking features arelifesavers. The screen is easy to read. The low draining B&W screen also allows longer battery life compared with other color units I've used. Looking for a dashboard mount and auto power adapter right now. A photojournalist, I keep it in my camera bag.

Great GPS, awful radio.
I purchased the 530 after finding out that a new firmware edition had come out.The GPS was working fine. The screen didn't blank out when using the radio. However, when I was using my radio to communicate with a Rino520, the voice transmission from my radio was garbled and had a lot of background noise.I verified the channel codes, even turned off the "scramble" mode and the radio still did not transmit properly.I could hear fine from my 530, I just couldn't communicate out from it.
Very Nice
This is my first rhino and I'm quite pleased with it.I've used it for hiking, geocaching, and hunting. It does everything I want and I keep finding more stuff.I'm happy enough with the mapping, the radio makes it a fantastic piece of equipment.
Love it, Love it, Love it!!
I have had nothing but good luck with this unit!!I have had it "lock" up on me only once, and that was while duck hunting in -4 degree temperature.I love the color screen, the temperature readout is great, the weather radio gives the forcasts in my area which is awesome, I love the electronic compass part of it, the base map is pretty good, it shows all of the major turnoffs off of highways and interstates.I have owned the 120, and 130 also and this 530 beats them all!!I have brought this new unit elk hunting, deer hunting, duck hunting, goose hunting, crane hunting, turkey hunting, camping, to the lakes for fishing and boating, several cross country trips and vacations, and too many scouting "adventures" to count. The lithium battery lasts a LONG time (when using GPS only), and I can usually hike back to get to a 12V adapter and get it charged (either in the truck or on the 4 wheeler).I have recommended this unit and all of the rino's to several people. My father in law has one for hunting communication and always being able to find each other on the map.It has been awesome!!!!
