INTERMITTANT LOSS OF DISPLAY
I purchased a Garmin 172C GPS through the mail on July 6, 2004.I am quite familiar with the reduction in visibility during sunny days for GPS systems,particularly if the sun shines directly on the display.Using my hand to shade the display under these conditions helps.However, one sunny day this past Fall, while navigating back to our boat launch facility in the Chesapeake Bay, the GPS display faded out completely!Nothing was visible! Garmin StreetPilot
I ordered the navigator to assist me with my out-of-town, large city driving directions. When I received the system it appeared to be the greatest device, but provided more information than I really needed.

This is a great GPS navigator system.Especially when it come to navigate without the satellite, it is great.However, some of the base map that comes with this unit is outdated but for the most part it is quick and responsive when you missed a turn or two.The large display makes it easy to work with.Overall very easy, straight forward to work with and has lots of options.I took this unit on vacation to mid west and it worked as good as northeast.Just type in the address and few seconds latter you are ready to go.
Navagation system on steroids!!!!
First off, not for the faint of heart, this is one heck of a GPS unit. Too big for most cars, but one you would love to have. I have a Mistubishi Montero 04 and it fit perfect in the dash, however to veiw movies I had to tilt it making the install look less professional than if I placed it in the center console exciting angle. I love the XM radio which I already had, and the features aren't the best in garmins package, but it functional. Viewing videos are a nice touch, I purchased a vehicle DVD player for it also, but the angle to view is limited in a fixed install. All in all, love it, great deal on Amazon on price, but didn't like the cost of the add on XM antenna, $250.00 bucks more. but my savings on Amazon made the bitter taste easier to swallow. ... Good hardware, good software - so far...
I've only owned the 505 for about a week now. It's a great deal when you consider you get a functional GPS with software for all of the US and Canada and Pocket PC all in one unit. The beauty of the Pocket PC over a normal GPS is that you have great flexibility in the GPS software you use with it - and thus a competitive market - in addition to having all of the other advantages of a Pocket PC (MP3 player, multimedia, Outlook, Word, etc).

Nice unit with great display
I used to have a Magellan Sportrak. It burned through batteries like a kid's toy while providing occasional false readings and claiming not get enough signal some 25% of the time (despite clear skies and no obstructions.) Finally I had enough and bought this one. Very happy I did!
Great GPS Unit
This is my fifth GPS unit. My first GPS unit was a Lowrance GM100 followed by a Garmin and a Magellan Sportrak and then a Lowrance Go2. All have been good units. I was very inpressed when I first received the Lowrance H20 unit. I was impressed by the screen size first and foremost. Second, I was pleasantly suprised to find the car power adapter. Shortly after purchasing the unit, I bought the software package. It includes the map software, a 64mb SD card and the card reader. I'm very happy with the set, but I would have preferred a direct cable connection to the unit as opposed to having to use the card reader to transfer data. The software is also somewhat limited in features as well. I would like to see more features involving trails. The maps are great and very accurate. Transferring data works great but is somewhat difficult in that you must remove the card which requires removal of the batteries. I would give the unit five stars if it weren't for the above limitations. If you just look at the unit itself based on accuracy and useability, it definitely ranks five stars. ... Read more

Sweet navigator!
I use this navigator often and love its convinience, and features. I enjoy using it, and think it would rank a 90 on the 1-100 scale.
REX gets my rave review
I just wanted to say that as a Mother who knows nothing about these units, and looking to buy a GPS for her trekking son, REX and his updates gave me excellent information that I would have never gotten from a dealer.His concise use & explanations were perfect, his updates were beyond helpful, and I appreciate users like him taking the time like he did to explain how the unit operates, his comparisons to more expensive units and his thoughts on how to spend your money in the right place.
Well worth the money.
I initially purchased a Whistler GPS200 unit. The GPS200 had a ton of features, integrated maps, etc but suffered from one inexcusable flaw. It did not find the required minimum satellites (it needed 3) 9 out of every 10 times - even in the best of conditions. When it did find a signal, it took 15 mins to lock and frequently dropped the signal. It was an extreme disappointment and I was hoping that the Geko would fare better. The day the Geko arrived, I powered it up and left it (on a cloudy afternoon) in my back yard for it to try and lock on a signal. The manual said this should take 15 minutes. It took barely 2 minutes. Ever since then, it locks in less than a minute and has yet to drop a signal. I use alkaline batteries and so far (after a few hours of use), it still has almost a full power band. I did set the "battery-save" option the first time I used it. Its redeeming features: It is very small (like the size of a slim Nokia 6100 cell phone), light, reliable, attractive, easy to use, comes from the best GPS company around, and has a host of sales, support and accessories available. It's negative: does not have the advanced features that the much more expensive units have (WAAS and mapware) .. but the price is so much lower so can you really complain. I cannot comment on its longevity (I have only had mine a short while), but so far, I am very pleased with it. ... Read more
