Still buggy after firmware upgrade
I purchased a Rino520 to use with a Rino530.Several times, the screen would blank out after pushing the "push to talk" (PTT) button when using the radio. The screen would recover after turning off the unit, however, it would blank out again after pushing the PTT button. In order to temporarily provide a more "long-term" solution, I had to disconnect the battery to power down the unit. After doing that, the screen would still blank out intermittently, but not with almost every push of the PTT button.Even with the screen blank out, the radio would still function, but then one is left with an expensive two-way radio.
Nice Unit, Optional AA Battery Function would be nice
I recently purchased the 520 for backpacking and canoeing. I found it very easy to use, with screen navigation, track information and user interfaces being surprisingly intuitive. It took me about 10 hours of drive time, primarily to and from work, to master most of the features. The color map, while not a necessity in any manner, is also a nice feature, although I don't know if it is worth the money. I would imagine that the grayscale display would be more than adequate. The batter life is absolutely, positively phenomenal. I got close to 90 hours out of mine without a recharge. I don't know if this was typical, but it far exceeded my expectations. Although I have not used the 2-way feature on it, I expect it to be quite useful when canoeing and backpacking with multiple parties, and is one of the primary reasons I purchased the unit.

Good upgrade over the eTrex
We had an eTrex, which my clumsiness sent to the bottom of a creek, never to be seen again. I like this unit a lot more than the eTrex:
Good solid unit
Nice unit, locks on fast and keeps the signal, it even worked inside my house. The base map that is loaded isn't much and only has some cities. The Garmin web sites indicate a "Marine Data Base" is loaded but I can't find it and we have a number of buoys near our house. It does have larger cities loaded. The Trip and Waypoint Manager software is pretty weak and I had problems getting it to load on my XP machine.Good crisp display and many options for the displays.I upgraded from an old Garmin and I would recommend this unit for a non-mapping use.
Garmin's not what it use to be
I purchased two of these units the first one worked OK. The second one has a problem. In a side by side comparison the signal qualities of the two units vary. I checked there accuracy and tracking with OziExplorer moving map software. The first unit tracks pretty good, but the second units position is off a large percentage of the time and sometimes as much as 400 meters. I sent the faulty unit to Garmin to be repaired. They sent it back with a description of the problem and that it had been fixed. I checked the unit out and it is the same as when I sent it to them. Now I'm stuck with a dud.

Great looking maps, can't find its way out of a paper bag.
I logged 870 miles with the iway 350.270 miles around maryland it was / is a great item. I took it on our first trip to New York and Long Island and it was terrible. The first problem occurred on the New Jersey turnpike. I was supposed to use the turnpike from start to exit 18 and at exit 4 we stopped to eat. The unit said I was off course because the rest area was 100 feet from the highway. However when we returned to the highway the unit could not chart the course any more. It said I was doing 95 miles a hour when i was doing 70, and it would lose satellites and go searching for them in the middle of the highway no obstructions of any kind anywhere. I even pulled over at exit 6 and we waited for 20 minutes to see if we just needed to stop the car for it to do the job. It did not recalculate our course until after exit 18 some 100 + miles from when it acted up. We even tried a full restart and cancel route and retried again from the address book and from direct typing the information again. About 1 mile from our destination it worked for 2 blocks and was lost again. Then after 2 more blocks we found where we where going. We often get lost on this trip this is why we purchased the unit. Then on the trip from the Bronx to Long Island a 30 mile trip it stopped 5 blocks into the journey and was recalculating. I had to call the people we where visiting and they directed us by phone. However about 1 mile from their place it started working again. We used it on long island with no trouble at all. Then ontrip back to the Bronx it worked pretty good only losing its position once on a major highway no trees or obstructions. Then on our way back from the Bronx to long Island it was lost half the way finding position and calculating . The same exact way we went in both directions but it was clearly not right leaving the Bronx. On our way back to Maryland it operated pretty good after a short stretch of lost signals and redirecting and we used exactly the same roads in both directions. I did update the software to the new 1.2.0 days before we took the trip.
Best portable unit around for the price!
This is a solid, feature-rich unit at a great price.Used it on several long trips and it performed well.Satellite locking and overall operation have been improved with the latest free software version 1.2.0 (if you have an older version, upgrades are available at the Lowrance web site).Screen brightness and touch screen controls are top notch - better than many higher-end units.Unit can get slightly sluggish if playing MP3's while navigating, but not so much so to cause any problems.Rechargeable battery life is better than most.In the sub-$500 class GPS this unit is tops!
Can't beat it.Nothing else is even close.
Have had i-WAY 350C for 2.5 months.Has performed well since first plugging it in.Initial Sat lock 2 minutes or so.So much configurability, and amazing details available for map screens. Base maps are pre-loaded for US, Canada. Show as many or as few as you need. Address Book holds 1,000 contacts.Load in your via's (Way Points) and autosort, to get best route to make the stops you need.Several free skins available from Lowrance web site, to change the look, if you want. Did experience a very few software inconveniences at first. Not really a problem since the configurability allows "Work Arounds" if needed.

Very cool, very useful, and very informative
I was a bit dubious about swapping out my regular cyclocomputer, especially for the extra dollars. Could something like the Edge 205 really give me that much more than the distance, speed, and time information I usually acquired with my $30 computer? Well, after a few rides with the 205, I can say that I'm a fan. The thing went on in a jiffy, works like a charm, and gives me all sorts of information I didn't have before. Wonder why that hill is so tough? Well, dummy, it's 13% grade. Didn't know that before. Wonder how much of that ride was spent ascending? Oh, about 1/3. Didn't know that before. How much climbing did I do on that ride? Oh, about 2,500 feet. Didn't know that before. And all this from a ride I've done at least a dozen times, and one I consider to be a "throwaway" training ride. A very cool, useful, and informative device. Well done, Garmin.
A Great Training Device for Bikers
I think the last reviewer said it best. Garmin set out to make a bike computer that blows away the competition. And they succeeded. As long as you understand that this is not your typical GPS device, with detailed maps whose primary function is to let you know where you are and keep you from getting lost, you will not be disappointed. The device gives you all the great features that you would expect from a high end bike computer; And then it gives you a whole bunch more.
A great cycling companion
The Garmin Edge 205 is exactly what Garmin positioned it to be:a sophisticated cycle computer and training partner that derives its data from a highly-sensitive GPS receiver. It is not the GPS unit to get if you're trying to geocache on your mountain bike or need advanced navigation features.

Brilliant
All i can say is this is not as big as some people make it out to be, and it's not heavy either. I bought this after owning a garmin 60cs (with an antenna) that kept flaking out, i.e. loosing signal in some relatively open forests. The XL HAS NEVER lost reception since I've had it (compared to the garmin, that lost reception under the first tree I walked under as i started to enter a forest). I work in both a montane rainforest and a lowland moist forest, and XL works exceptionally well in both, under heavy canopy and dense cloud cover, day or night. The only time it could not pick up anything was when i turned it off! Battery life is better than advertised, I got 20+ hrs of use on the 4 AA batteries. After getting use to this screen it's hard to go back to anything else. The joystick is a welcomed addition; it makes saving multiple waypoints (or POI as it is referred to on the GPS unit) a breeze. The directory system on the GPS is very intuitive; there is no need to be search endlessly for any features. Most importantly, with the SD card, my Mac recognizes the GPS.
eXplorist XL Failed in Field
On a recent trip to Lake Powell where I had intended to use my Magellan eXplorist XL as a backup for navigation onm the lake, some geocaching.I am glad that this was not our primary navigation unit ir we could have had some problems. The unit would operate for a couple of hours then lock up and not operate until I had removed the batteries for an hour or so then reinstalled them.New batteries did not help. After seeing the comments about the slothful service support of Magellen I have returned the unit and will try something else.
Magellan XL GPS features are unsurpassed
I recently upgraded my GPS by purchasing a Magellan Explorist XL handheld unit. It replaced the first GPS unit I purchased a few years ago ... a Magellan Meridian Gold. In this review, consequently, improvements, comparisons and features of the new Explorist XL are frequently compared to the older Magellan model.

I am impressed, but it's not perfect.
A major factor in my decision of which GPS receiver to purchase was the screen size.I wanted to be able to see the details, as I do not have the greatest eyesight. This unit has a four-inch diagonal screen. It is one of the largest in portables.Another factor is that my car, a 2006 Nissan 350Z has an opening in the dash for an in-dash GPS unit. When I purchased the vehicle, I could not see paying $1800 and did not ask whether it could be added at that time. I also must say that the Navman ICN750 fits perfectly in the opening at the very rear, which helps shade it from direct sunlight. This is good since the sun tends to wash out the screen a little bit.Still, it can be read in direct sunlight.I am not using the supplied mounting device, as it must be mounted on the dash, which would obscure the gauges and is not removable to be remounted elsewhere such as a second vehicle.I have emailed the company asking whether the suction mount was supposed to be supplied along with the sticky pad I received.I may not have received it because I live in southern California and it is illegal to mount anything to the windshield.Still, that should be my decision to make.I am uncertain as to how I will mount it in my vehicle. It sits well in the opening and has only fallen face down once. The opening is well lined and cannot damage anything.
Would Not Buy This Brand Again
Battery life and recharge time is abysmal!

Awesome visibility, great usability
Our primary criteria were good visibility while mounted on the dash (or windshield) and, naturally, something that would be reasonably easy to use. This certainly meets those. The only visibility problem we had was that the screen was *too* bright while driving at night-fortunately there were two of us so the screen could be turned towards the passenger & away from the driver. Bright sun-never a problem. Driver's ability to read the screen when unit was mounted in front of the passenger-never a problem.
Cobra 4000 GPS
This is a fantastic machine. We used it on a 4200 mile vacation trip and it performed 99% perfectly. We had two glitches. One was when it told us the correct off-ramp but the number of the ramp was wrong.
nothing comes close..a must for somebody on the GO
Truly nothing comes close to this..nothing compares. After months and months of planning and window shopping and frequenting all the sites and stores where i can potentially buy a GPS.Truly, this is worth all my wait and patience.I just knew something out there is better than the famous brands im seeing @ BestBuy stores and Circuit City. The screen is great and the instructions are so precise, accurate and voice prompt is so clear, you won't even need to keep on looking at the screen to keep on the right track. The auto rerouting is an important factor for me too.PLus,the address book is totally cool and a timesaver.Everything you are looking for is here. From out of the box,i literally just plug it in my car and off the road i went.IT is user friendly too.It is not complicated at all. With its one touch "go home" button. It will literally take you home. Will even offer you two route options, how cool is that huh?Its worth my money its worth the wait.To travel with confidence on the road means a cobra by your side!

Nice unit, Nice price
I bought my 400 last Novemeber. It's worked well for me overall. I did have some difficulty with the first unit I got but easily got it exchanged and it has worked great since then. The unit has the capability to scan 12 satellites however, if you get six at a time you are doing well. The unit gives reliable routing with three or more satellites locked so there are very few places that you won't get a signal.
Compared to cost, it's great. It seems to have 12 channels.
I purchased Fine Drive 400 a couple weeks ago because I don't want to spend a lot of money on it. This unit is really easy to operate and easy to read. In addition to map, it shows time and miles left to the destination in a screen. It also has speed alert feature, enabling me to save extra money. It was just yesterday to drive freeway. GPS unit let me know when I exceeded speed limit. Police passed my car just a couple minutes after I reduced speed. The screen is bright enough to clearly see it even in full sunlight.
Old technology
from the specification you should know that it only has 8 channels. The second generation is 12 channels. And, the latest chip is 20 channels (SRIF III). Why do you need the latest chip? I used Garmin's GPS which uses 2nd generation chip. I could receive any signal at home or in downtowm. Once I lost signal during driving, it is very hard for the GPS to get the signal again. These problem is completelt solved in the 3rd generation chip. If you want to buy a GPS, you definitely need to buy a GPS with 3rd chip or SRIF III. How do you the chip is 3rd generation or not? Find out how many channels it can get. 8 channel is 1st, 12 channels is 2nd and 20 channels is 3rd generation chip.

Great GPS for driving
I have used GPS's for eight years on a regular basis. I use two Garmins and Mircrosoft Streets and Trips. Streets and Trips is a excellent program and the receiver picks up signals quickly. The drawback is that I needed to have my laptop in my vehicle to use.
Navman gets you there
I have not had the Navman 550 love enough to use it often.I tried it on a trip of 100 miles to our daughter's home.I used my usual route which is the shortest that I have found and the Navman wanted me to go another way.As I got closer to my destination the Navman picked up on my route and gave good directions. There are a couple of things that I have been disappointed with. One is the on/off switch. It is on the back and one must use the stylus to operate it.It is impossible to get to the back to operate the switch when the Navman is mounted in the car.One must remove the Navman from the mount in order to operate the on/off switch. The other disappointment is that the instructions that came with it indicated that software downloads could be obtained at their U.R.L.When I tried to get downloads they were not available at their site.I am looking forward to using this GPS unit on an upcoming trip through six states.
Great replacement for your maps!
I borrowed this unit from a friend for an 1100 mile car trip from Florida through North Carolina. Here's what I found:

For urban use? Not a good choice.
I've owned this for about two years now. I don't drive, but I still have the same "navigational issues" that everyone else has. I just wanted a convenient electronic replacement for a bulky paper map and magnetic compass.
Get the external antenna & adapter for use in vehicle
I like this GPS and bought mine from Amazon. As with all GPS, the unit has to be able to "see" the satellites - e.g. GPS cannot see the satellites through the metal roof of your car. We get so use to AM/FM radio, we take this for granted. The GA 27 C Garmin antenna works with the GPS 76s and comes with an included suction mount that can be attached to the inside of your windshield in car or aircraft. This is my first GPS - the Garmin controls are intuitive to me. Construction is high quality, great ergonomics -- and great vibes, if you consider that : )
Excellent, versatile unit with some drawbacks.
I highly recommend the 76s for anyone who is spending time in the remote, trackless outdoors.I've become lost a few times in southern Utah, perhaps the most difficult backcountry region in the world.I bought the 76s to record routes in case I need to backtrack to extricate myself from the canyon country, and I've been very impressed with how easy this system is to use.I only have two complaints:I have not been able to get near the 16 hours of battery life that Garmin advertises, even with the backlight off; and I can't get an accurate reading inside my truck, which at times has been more than a headache.Inside my truck the compass tends to freewheel and my route readings become useless.I have attempted to get information from Garmin, but they respond with more questions, and haven't been of much help so far. There are rooftop antenas available for other models, but I don't know of one for the 76s, and Garmin has yet to respond to that query.Overall, I'm happy with what is obviously a well-designed and usable receiver, and just wish that I could get some answers to my technical questions. Another note to drivers:the compass works only when the unit is held almost dead level.Try to find a place in your vehicle to mount the unit so that it is simultaneously level and visable from the driver's seat.I haven't found a good spot yet.

Garmin GPSmap 60...better than I'd hoped
Last year I did a motorcycle trip from Kennedy Space Center in Florida to Edwards Air Force Base in California.Along the way I planned stops at every NASA related site I could think of and in preparation for that trip I purchased a Garmin eTrex Legend. After a few days of playing around with it, it quickly became apparent that while the Legend is a nice little unit, it was woefully inadequate for my needs.
Garmin GPSMap 60 more than I expected.
I am thourghly thrilled with my purchase. This little unit does way more than I hoped for. I am just looking for excuses to do some interesting treasure hunting and exploring with it on my side.
GPSMap 60 - Worth my money
This is my first GPS unit and although I have no other experience with other devices, this is purely my personal opinion.

Works well unless you're under water
Bought mine sometime around Christmas and took it into the water for the first time on a trip to St Thomas last week.It died within 10 minutes of being in the water. It was never more than 5' down while I was snorkeling.
Good but not water resistant
Overall I loved my TrailDrop compass until I took it swimming (only a few feet below the surface) and two days later it died.
Not easy to use, can't recommend....
Overall, not terribly happy with this units user interface and design. The spartan instructions require pressing buttons referred to in the manual as "SW1" SW2" etc, but they are not labeled as such on the device. You toggle through modes that are abreviated on the display with just 2 letters to tell you what they are ("TR" "CH" what??) Just an unfreindly interface all around. Look for a better unit.

So far I like it, really 4.5 stars.
Having used a huge number of GPS units over many years, I must say that the 76CX is very good.
Complete rip off
The Garmin GPSMAP76Cx is very disappointing. Garmin recommended this unit after I contacted them about wanting a GPS I could transfer from my boat to my car and vice versa. It was more money than I had expected to pay but then it looked like it had everything I needed and although I knew I would have to buy a Bluechart map I was assured these were readily available on micro SD card. I was assured that the included Metroguide Europe software had detailed maps of the UK and therefore I would not need to purchase additional maps for using in the car. However when the unit arrived it became clear that the Metroguide Europe software does not do "auto-routing" (you can't get the GPS to find places and direct you to them) unless you have first worked out all your routes on a PC and uploaded them to the 76CX unit. If you want the 76CX to behave like a proper automotive GPS unit you have to purchase the City Navigator software which is another ?150! This seems completely crazy as dedicated car sat nav units are available for this price with auto-routing and all the bells and whistles as standard. The fact that Garmin didn't include the City Navigator software rather than the completely useless Metroguide software seems very mean spirited to me. At this point I was starting to feel a bit ripped off so I thought I would just buy the Bluechart Micro SD card and use the 76CX on the boat, and probably buy a proper dedicated road GPS separately. However when I tried to buy the Bluechart map on Micro SD card I couldn't find anyone in the UK who had them in stock. Garmin will only sell them directly within the US and eventually when I found someone who said they could order the card for me they said it would be "at least 10 days" to get it to them and it would cost 50% more than Garmin charge their US customers! After contacting Garmin's support team I was told to buy a blank SD card and the Bluechart map on CD - even more expensive! The Bluechart maps are also for quite large areas which is useless for me as I only have a small boat with a 10 mile range so really wont need such a large area but still you have no option to just buy the bit you need - you have to purchase an entire section! All in all this unit is fine - the screen is smaller than I would have liked and there's no voice directions, it also feels a lot flimsier than I thought it would, but the additional costs of maps and poor availability of pre programmed micro SD cards mean this is incredibly poor value for money - I really regret buying it now and wish I had done more research.
Great Unit
This is a great step from my 12XL. I got this along with City Select North America 7. The standard 128M hold all of the states in my area (New England), but I still upgraded to the 512M memory and plan to upgrade to the 2G when it is readily available (has been released at this time, just cannot find one to buy). The maps are shown easily and the variety of controls is sufficient. I bought mine with a Garmin bike mount to put on my handlebar. Good so far. Glad I got it.

Well designed, mission-ready unit
After reading all of the online reviews here on Amazon, and on the manufacturer's web site, I decided to purchase the units and judge for myself.I had been planning a trip to the Michigan sand dunes, and thought it would be nice for safety to have at least two units in case any member of my family got lost, or seperated during the trip.
Troublesome
I bought 2 of the Rino 130's for my wife and I to use for hiking, boating, and geocaching. We were excited about the prospect of peer to peer positioning, etc. After 10 minutes, one of them locked up, then the second one would not transmit only receive a radio communication. The only way to get either one of them to function properly again was to remove the power source, wait a few seconds and reinstall and power up again. The first time this happened I was hoping it would be an isolated incident; then it happened again 10 minutes later.I checked the software; one was running ver 5.40 and the other 5.20.Webupdater would not work with one of them.It would lock up during the firmware upgrade.
Battery could last longer if you use a throat mic
We have many sets of radios as we use them for airsoft and paintballing. When we decided to buy a 2in1 system (GPS and radio) we deicided to look at these. The GPS unit is awesome.

Works with everything. Great performance.
I prefer the PC version over the USB because of it's compatibility with everything. Even thought I don't have a serial port in my laptop I actually got a USB-to-Serial converter just to use the GPS18 PC.
Excellent performance, good value.
I found this GPS receiver while looking for a GPS to use in a home-built radio position beaconing system (Ham radio APRS for those of you who know what that is). I found the GPS 18 with cigarette lighter adapter and DB-9 serial interface. This GPS was quite literally plug-&-play. I supplied it power using the power connector and plugged the DB9 into my computer terminal, placed the GPS in the open, and a few moments later it was streaming NMEA 0183 position data to my computer. I didn't need to configure anything, no software required. The GPS works well connected to software such as TOPO to provide real time position tracking on your computer, and can also be easily connected to packet modems/TNCs/TinyTrak modules for APRS purposes. The magnetis a little weak, but the unit is light enough that it generally won't be a big issue. The connectors on the ends can be easily cut off for direct connection to a power source or your own homebrew NMEA device. However, you can also buy it with bare ended cables if you are looking to directly connect it to something.

Fun Watch!!
I gave this watch to my fiance & he has really enjoyed tracking our altitude gain on bike rides.I've appreciated knowing the temperature. Can't wait for ski season!
Get the old style ...
I've had a VECTOR for more than 5 years, GREAT TOOL, but it finally slipped away to lost-watch land. I bought a new one and was very sad to send it back. You see, I could see the old black letters on a white face just fine, even in bright sunshine. The new improved model has faint green letters on a black background -- much harder to see while hiking or sailing, especially when wearing polarized sunglasses. The graphics on the new model are also much harder to discern --for example, the indicator for degrees F or degrees C is tiny (granted that is probably an issue only during set-up). The good folk at Suunto have still not addressed the problem of accidentally uncalibrating the barometric sensor -- that's a problem if you hit the buttons while running -- and the manual still doesn't help you get out of the mess in the field. It was a great product for backcountry activity, now it's mostly for show.Look for the old version and buy a new battery ...
Suunto Vector
This is the second Suunto Vector watch i have owned. Only because the first one was lost. The only two draw backs of this watch is battery life and my band broke twice in two years. Seems to me they could offer a much longer life battery and a band that would hold up alot better. the battery lasts about 6 months only. For the price of this watch ($230) you think tehy could do alittle better.
