5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the toys!!!!!!!!!
Hi! I'm the 37 year old again. Back to the story. Rachel, my daughter, and I went on the internet again with her lemonade money. Well, Rachel's the Computer Wizard and went on the computer herself. She yelled "Mommie! I found a good pair of walkie-talkies! Pretty Colors too!" I ran in and I thought they were junk like the "Elite Operations Officer Walkie- Talkie". I'm a sucker for the puppy dog face. Well, it turns out Rachel knew it. You know what happened next. We got the walkie-talkies and Rachel gave one to her friend Sulema and I was amazed at how well they worked. No statick. And whoever got on thier chanell, the two girls could go on an other one. Perfect and worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars What it is (a good radio) and what it is not (a magic wand).
This product works very well if used in the manner in which it was designed.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not as powerful as older FRS models!
Having been a fan of Motorola FRS walkie-Talkies for years, I was looking forward to the extra power of the GMRS models. The Motorola T5720 was a major disapointment!I made a few range tests and found that the T5720 was not nearly as effective as my old Motorola T289 FRS radio - much less range, more noise, poor audio quality.Don't buy this product! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice radios for a variety of applications
As I was recently out in a remote area with a team of 8 people performing a month long task, we needed to communicate.Where we were there was no such thing as "roaming" for our cell phones, but luckily, the town had a Wal-Mart.For 50$ a pair, I decided to buy 2 sets of radios so teams could communicate with each other.
5-0 out of 5 stars Uniden GMR855-2CK GMRS
I tested it in the real world. In around the houses and tree and wires it will work about 1 to 1.5 miles. Thats was it at best. In the open with a view of each radio, about 5 miles was it. That was over open water. Maybe if you were on top of a mountain and the other was on top of another mountain at 8 miles away with the power boost-maybe it will go the 8 miles, but i doubt it. But besides that i have used many brands of these radios, and this one seems to be better, for the price. I say if you really need to communicate at a larger distance, use your cell phone-- if you have a signal-HA! Can you hear me now- get it??4-0 out of 5 stars Uniden GMR855... best deal for the range.
I purchased the UNIDEN GMR855 about a month ago and for the price they are just great. The range is about 1 3/4 mile in an environment of trees and houses. Beyond that, all I get is nothing, I don't really know if the claim of 8 miles is true as the conditions in an open area may have a lot to do with it. But it beats the old walkie-talkiesof the 60s and 70s where you could only reach to you neighbors house across the street and all you would get is a static voice threw the speaker and you still have to make out what the hell they said! TheRechargeable NiMH base is great.... no battery replacement. I do wish they had a VOC microphone feature as like the UNIDEN GMR885. The large menu makes it easy to see. The buttons are nice, large and easy to press. The case is rugged. These radios are great for anyone looking for an affordable communication device with in there average range of a complex environment. I would like to see in the future a true 8 mile 2 way personal radios able to receive threw all conditions! There ya go UNIDEN... a project for ya! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited range; best features require separate accessories
I cannot for the life of me imagine how this company can, in good conscience, claim that these radios have a range of up to two miles. OK, maybe if the two people using them are in a flat, empty field with direct line of sight. Maybe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little radio for family ski trip
I purchased two pairs of Cobra PR 3000 GMRS 2 watt radios for our ski trip this year. It's one of the best purchases I ever made. I looked at Motorola and Midland before purchasing these. They have more power than Motorola and better built than Midland. I like that most of the buttons are on the face and you don't have to do a lot of menu browsing. We skied at Alta and Snowbird Utah. The ability to talk over the slopes really amazed me. We tried them out in our neighborhood and they worked pretty well. We could converse for a half mile with no trouble at all through trees and houses. However if you go behind a hill the ability to converse is greatly reduced. At Alta Snowbird you are in a canyon with granite walls, so I think the signal is bouncing off the canyon walls, becuase we could talk for miles, even with ridges between us. At the frequencies and power levels of these radios you should get great reception if you are in line of sight without too many obstructions. But don't expect to go much over a half mile if you have a lot of obstructions. If you are true line of sight with no obstructions, you can go further than the 5 miles advertised. In a granite canyon like little cottonwood canyon they were great! We were in a group of 8 skiers and it was snowing hard and difficult to stay together. My 12 year old daughter got separated from us and called in to let us know where she was. It saved hours of anxiety for us and kept us from ruining our ski day. Same thing happened the next day with my 11 year old daughter. As far as I'm concerned it was well worth the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worked pretty well on our cruise
My family bought Cobra PR 3000 radios for a cruise in December 2003 and were pleased overall.Read more

Stay connected with your buddies while on the trail, at the river, or anywhere else within a 10-mile range with this pair of GMR1058-2CK two-way radios. Also ideal as neighborhood watch tools and kid-sitting aids, each water-resistant radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 38 privacy codes, along with a voice-operated transmitter that enables hands-free communication when used with an optional HS 2467 headset and microphone. The large number of channels and privacy codes give users several communication options, ensuring that they can almost always talk with friends or family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. The channels are easy to find thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses for active channels while you watch, and the channel monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given channel. To transmit on a GMRS or FRS channel, a user merely presses the PTT or power-boost button while the scan is paused. The power-boost button expands the radio's range by emitting maximum power when a GMRS channel is detected.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent radio at an excellent price
I have found the COBRA PR 4000 one of the best radios I have ever used.It has great range and many features. It is well built and easy to use.
5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, Consistent Quality & Performance
My family have owned four of the PR-4000 radios for almost year, and just purchased a PR-4250.They have consistently outperformed every other radio we have tried in the middle area of the market. The battery life on NiMh batteries is amazing. We have sometimes monitored our usual channel and CTCSS pair sometimes for two to three days at a time, including periodic usage!
1-0 out of 5 stars License REQUIRED
There is a license required for GMRS radios. It is $75. Funny how the merchants don't tell you that. Perhaps because of the "extra" cost? By the way... the fine for unlicensed operation of these radios is up to $10,000. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Works great with different antennas
I recently purchased 2 of these radios, first thing I did was get rechargeable batteries, a recharger and DC car adaptor. I then went to my local professional radio shop and purchased 2,6 inch, 1/4waverubber antennas cut for 460 mhz. I also purchased 2 mobile magnet mount antennas cut for the right frequency. All antennas and accessories improved radios peformance dramatically, especially the two mobile antennas. It was no problem for my brother and I to talk 15-20 kilometers (roughly 9 1/2to 12 1/2 miles) with our two vehicles through our hilly, vegetation terrain here in Atlantic Canada. My next step is to purchase a base antenna for the house and the Audiovox 2000 GMRS Base Station.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cobra GMRS review
The Cobra 1000 is a basic and reliable 2-way radio. It could be better with the addition of some other useful functions like a scan mode or privacy mode. As a receiver, it lacks sensitivity at times to catch the faint signals but in thetrasmit mode, it really sounds very good. My only major problem with the radio is the design of the battery compartment. It is a "snap" cover which doesnt really snap that well and which will be a problem as the radio is used more frequently. I already have to use a rubber band around one of the radios to keep the battery in place.

CRISP CLEAR COMMUNICATION UP TO 5-MILES AWAY!
5-0 out of 5 stars Cobra GMRS Two-Way Radio Pair (PR 950-2 DX)
We just rec'd the radios via UPS and couldn't wait to try them out.Aft. putting in the battaries and reading the instruction manual, I went out around the neighborhood while my wife stayed in our apt. I was very impressed w/ the clarity of these radios. I had bought a diff. brand last yr. at Wal-Mart for hunting (in WV Natl. Forrests). They also had a 5mi. range. We were lucky if we could understand each other at 100yds and these were a major brand. Our older 2 channel Cobra Walk-abouts were better than those. Needless to say, I returned them for refund. These new Cobra's are incredible and loaded w/ features. The only thing that has me puzzled is that there's no place to clip the wrist straps that came w/ the radios. These I'm sure, will prove to be a great investment. Thanks Cobra!5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Radios
I must say I was very impressed with the 950DX Radio. This is the first radio I have had where I did not get excessive static while talking.I tried another brand, instead of sticking with Cobra, and I will never do that again.I live in a woody and hilly area and the reception is still good, even from a couple miles away.I would definitely recommend these radios to anyone. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars AudioVox GMRS radios
These radios have excellent range, good battery life and included the charger. I paid over TWICE as much for just the radios themselves WITHOUT batteries or the charger at a retail store one year ago.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly dissapointed on the quality of these radios
I bought these radios intending to use them only occasionally and in an urban setting. Here is how it went:

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent unit.Throw out the packed-in batteries
After using the FRS1000 base stations for a couple of years, this unit was an excellent upgrade.I am about to get another one when it goes on sale. The last time it was on sale it was less than fifty dollars--anything higher is just too much for a glorified intercom which is how I use these. The no-name NiMH batteries are useless, but don't throw them in the garbage--take them to the hazmat section of your local dump. The hand-held unit works great with new batteries.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good product, questionable customer support
I received the radio yesterday and I like its size and features.Unfortunately, the unit cane with a set of four AAA 650mAh NiMH batts whos general quality is extremely poor:on two of the batteries, the positive end is either not properly plated, or is already corroding.Worse, a third one is shorted and will not take a charge.I called warranty support to see if they would simply send me a set of new batts, but they refused.I talked to a supervisor, and she refused, I then talked to the supervisor's supervisor and she refused. They want me to return the entire unit (at my expense) for for repair/replacement (possibly with a refurb unit).Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Underpowered, lousy
We received a pair of the T5820s as a gift. Thought these would be an upgrade to our old FRS radio. It was a downgrade! The 5-mile rating is a joke. The old FRS radios way out-perform the 5820s, and are more compatible with other radios. 3-0 out of 5 stars Better options out there
My fiance and I play a lot of airsoft (kinda like paintball) and we use radios like this a lot.I have to say, I am not very fond of our Motorola radios! We constantly had issues with sound quality, even within short distances.Half the radios we bought ended up broken after only a few uses!1-0 out of 5 stars A piece of Junk from Motorola
I used 5320, 5420 2 miles range walkie talkie before, I have to say they are much better than this 5 mile range 5820. 5820 does not even go beyond one mile and voice are twisted. very dissapointed at this unit, do yourself a favor, if you need 5 miles range buy a 5720 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent unit
First of all, sorry for my english.5-0 out of 5 stars Great radio
This radio is ideal for the money. I tested these radio's in the city and got almost 4 miles in range. I had one outside and my friend had the other one in his truck driving away from me. We were able to keep constant communication the whole time. He was driving through busines and residential areas. These will be great from car to car and out in the mountains.

4-0 out of 5 stars Uniden GMRS480 is a 2 watt unit
I bought 2 of these radios a few days ago. I am not sure how the idea got around that this is a 1/2 watt unit, because it is a 2 watt unit, and it DOES require an FCC license. The manual and the FCC registration says it is a 2 watt unit. I was very skeptical of this radio, because it seemed like I was getting alot of radio for less money, but I am glad I bought it now. We are getting around 1.5 mile range in the neighborhood, and about 2.5 miles out in the country were there are less obstructions. My father has 2 motorolas (5100 model). We tested these units against the Unidens head to head. The Uniden GMRS480 sounded much better than the Motorola 5100s every time. The secret is to not hold you mouth too close to the radio when you speak. No need to speak loud either. The Uniden's were not "tiny micy" sounding at all. I would have given this unit a rating of "5", but I must tell you that the thermometer is not very useful. I believe that it cannot get a correct temperature reading when you are holding the radio. It can be around 40 degrees outside, and if you are holding the radio, it will read in the upper 70's. I guess if you sit the radio down and don't touch it, it may get a "true" temperature reading. The SCAN function works, but is kinda weird in my opinion. You have to hold down either of the up/down channels for several seconds to get it to scan. Therefore, you actually change channels 1 thru 15 many times, and then the unit goes in to scan mode. Also, you can't use the radio while it is on the charger, which really disappoints me. But the batteries (NiMH), lasted us on the farm on one charge, Sat, Sun, & Monday, with the unit turned on all during the daylight hours. By Monday evening they still had 2 out of 4 bars left on the battery meter. The weather band is good, it picked up the NOAA channel about 50 miles away. Seems pretty weather resistant, but I try not to get anything wet that is electronic. Good thing that the radio is simple to figure out and use, because I could have written a better manual. You can download the manual from the Uniden web site before you buy it. It is only a few pages. The folks at Uniden have been very helpful in answering my questions. They have responded to every email I have sent them. I recommend the Uniden GMRS480, but since it is GMRS and 2 watt, it does require an FCC license. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Walkies!
These walkies are great!Have not had any problems. These things work for the full 10-miles and more, if the wind conditions are right. If you are looking for a reliable set of walkies, these are the ones for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars FCC license required!!!!
We got these for Christmas, and are very pleased with them. We haven't tested out the range yet, but were counting on a slightly wider range than the 6-mile ones (which reviewers found to have a 1-mile range).
3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
I think with ALL these 2 mile + walkie-talkie brands, the ONLY reason they DO NOT REACH their SAID RANGE is because the USERS don't GET THEIR FCC LISCENSES! THE RANGE ONLY WORKS IF YOU HAVE AN FCC LISCENSE! IF YOU AREN'T WILLING TO GET THE LISCENSE, DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE WALKIE-TALKIE RANGE. ... Read more
