Great Learning tool and a necessity for the Explorer Tool Kit!
This device allows me to work my way through a magazine or a story with new vocabulary in a quarter of the time it used to take. I keep it hands reach whenever I'm doing any spanish work, so I can look up more precise definitions.
Not the best!
I got this dictionary because it seemed to be the best and most complete at the time. However, there are a few things that drive me crazy about this device!
It's very hard to read
It's very hard to read without the backlight and it shuts off after a very short time! I don't think it allows you to program the backlight duration.If you want to read anything you always have to be turning it back on! The vocabulary is limited compared to the Sharp PW E550 dictionary.The keyboard is not as comfortable as the Sharp. Its ok if you are not going to use it for a prolonged time. After some time you're fingers will get tired since the keyboard is somewhat compressed.

Franklin TG-450 Review
On the face of it, a brilliant idea. Unfortunately, this device is utterly useless as a translator from a language which generally does not classify nouns by gender (e.g. English) to one that does (e.g. French).
Great translator - - - when it is not broken
We took the Franklin TG-450 European Language Translator on our recent vacation in The Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary.In the first two countries it worked as promised.In most instances I was able to get a rough translation of the word or phrase I was seeking.The currency and metric convertors also came in handy. However, near the end of our travels in Poland, the screen went blank.For $8 I replaced the batteries (probably needlessly) and got the translator briefly to work again by resetting it. This also requires entering some base information, a process which takes a couple of minutes. After a few more minutes, it stopped working again.I repeated this process several times and then gave up.The translator is warrantied and I have requested a replacement.We will see if this one holds up any better. ... OK for the money, but....
This product is very reasonably priced, however, it certainly does not measure up to the product description. In particular, the Euro converter did not work for me (or it was just to un-user friendly).Also many needed words and phrases were not found.

Next to Useless
A couple of years ago I bought a Franklin Spanish-English dictionary (DBE-1470AM) before going to Mexico and it worked great for deciphering written signs, menus, etc.So I thought I would get something to help me before going to Germany this summer, and this is the Franklin product that appeared to best fit the bill.
Good only for the basics

Poor design for travel
I took this on one trip and I tried to pack it safely but the screen on the unit still somehow got broken.The cover is pretty flimsy so my theory is that the entire cover pressed into the screen causing it to break.For a travel piece of equipment to have the most vulnerable part of the unit so weakly protected is really bad design.I didn't own it long enough to evaluate it's usage.Sorry.

The dictionary is fine. All the features are easy to access. The only thing I find could improve the text is larger type. It's difficult for me to read the type.

Worth every penny!
This translator is like the best ever! I've used it on a long trip to central America and several trips to Mexico. I like that it translates common phrases that go with the word looked up. It doesn't just translate a word. I just wish it had a more comprehensive verb conjugation format. But, all-in-all very good. The other bad thing is that the battery is expensive apparently 'cause they aren't regular double or trip A, but I've only had to replace mine once, so you get every cent out of the batteries. ... Ectaco EI200D is very good.
This is a great machine for the price. The word database is more than adequate at over 400 thousand words.I don't have the battery problems that some customers have.I attribute this to the mfr making corrections based on customer complaints. I notice that my manual is dated 2005, and that the battery cover is plastic. The plastic cover obviously negates the requirement to place an insulator between the batteries and the cover.There is no problem with contrast either. The contrast is easily controlled with the contrast knob to give me optimum brightness.I've been using the unit for about two weeks.I don't know how long the two CR1220 batteries will last. I have no complaint with the unit but one suggestion for enhancement. And that would be inclusion of definitions of acronyms.
Solid value and dependability
I found this device really good at what it is meant to do - namely replace a regular paper dictionary. The vocabulary base was suitably inclusive and the search functions make it really quick and easy to find the words I am looking for. I haven't had any problem with the batteries myself and when I called customer service about how to use some of the bonus software, I was treated well.
Don't Buy This Product
The first one didn't work from the start and I returned it to Amazon.Com.The second one drained the batteries in a matter of days. I returned that one...The replacement had the same problems.The fourth one worked a little better. I kept replacing the batteries every month or two. I just replaced all three batteries and it doesn't work at all.It is not worth all the hassle.The product has some serious design flaws. Cheap at twice the price!
I bought this for my husband and myself when we were planning our trip to Turkey. I was a bit apprehensive about going at all but after doing some research decided that the best thing I could do was to buy this translator. At least we would be able to communicate!

Would be fine if you could read it -- NOT RECOMMENDED
I've used mine for about a week now, and honestly, I would not buy it again (I'm returning it), due to the very poor screen.It is really not readable unless you get it under a VERY bright light.Other than that, it seems to work ok, but the screen is a killer.

I am an interpretor for a major hospital and bought this dictionary to keep from having to carry around a large paper dictionary for the occasional word I have to look up. I was extremely disappointed with this product. Merriam Webster advertises that this dictionary has 5,000,000 translations! Don't believe this! The Larousse unabridged spanish-english dictionary only advertises having 400,000 translations, but try flipping to any random page of the larousse dictionary and go down the list looking up the same words with DBE-1450 for comparison. you would notice that about half of the words in the larousse dictionary would pull up no result on the DBE-1450! I used this electronic translator for about a week with my job, and was frustrated enough by the incompleteness of the dictionary that I sold it to a patient for a few bucks less that what I paid for it... besides the fact that the dictionary didn't have about 80% of the words I tried to look up for my job, it seems to be about twice as thick as the older version (DBE-1440). I guess the increase in size is due to the new touch screen technology of the newer version, but I'd much prefer cutting the width and weight in half even if it meant having to touch a button instead of a screen!.. I had the DBE-1440 for about 3 years and was very happy with it until it got stollen a few months ago. Hopefully I can get a hold of this older version again, but unfortunately you can no longer buy the larousse version of the franklin electronic translator...
SO much better than a dictionary
Five years ago, I hesitated to buy this product because I thought it was extravagent - I had a dictionary, why would I need this?It is WONDERFUL.The dictionary is comprehensive and MUCH easier and faster to use than a book.Because of that, I constantly refer to it, both while reading and in class.The conjugation tool is extremely helpful.And it fits in your pocket.Great product and worth every penny.I am on-line today to buy a new one because I dropped it in a puddle and I can't live without it. ... Dependable friend
Well, I must say that this little thing is amazing. I just came back from doing the Grand Tour (England, France, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, France again, and Belgium) and found that with this in my pocket I was able to really communicate. What I think is probably the most useful function of this small device is the instant phrase translation to and from any of 10 included languages. I only know a bit of Spanish so I can't say how accurate the other translations are but the English-Spanish travel part was great. I was really glad to have it with me because although my Rough Guide had a small phrasebook in it, it wasn't something I could depend on.

second year spanish student
I had great hopes for this machine.Immediately I noticed that the first line of the entry always seemed to be in a dark shadow and I had to try tipping the unit to get light into the inner screen to make it readable.It too often doesn't have the words --- even many very common ones in its database.The voice is extremely fuzzy when you try the audio pronunciation feature. It only has a few forms of many of the the words I am seeking.If this unit really has 250,000 words -- as they tell us---then they should create a new one with a couple of million

Better than a paper dictionary
I like being able to find words quickly, in either English or Spanish, with this dictionary. It contains a large number of words, and it conjugates verbs. There have been quite a few times it has not had a word I requested. Its important weaknesses are that it translates only words and does not recognize phrases; also, the speaking voice is fuzzy. I also noticed that it mispronounced one Spanish word (pajaro). On the up side, mine has worked well for 3-4 years, and it does not require frequent battery changes.

good, solid and fast
I bought it to study German language mostly. The vocabulary base is truly huge English-German, Polish--German and Polish-English and I found everything I expected to and lots more. What I think is probably the most useful function of this speedy device is the instant reverse translation. The voice capabilities are really good and useful if, like me, you don't have a clue how to pronounce some words. The grammar books are helpful too as far as they go.

The only thing I was disapointed in was it only speaks in English. I am a native English speaker. I needed it to hear the words in the Czechlanguage. I was not to happy with it because of that one reason. If it wereto speak the words in Czech then I think it would begreat.Read more
