The single worst piece of electronic equipment I've ever owned in all my long years
I hope this review is helpful, here goes: This scanner captures great images.When it feels like it.It works about once out of every 5 times on Windows XP; the other times it gives the same TWAIN error that I'm now reading that people all over the web are having.In the driver's readme.txt file, it notes that this error "occasionally" (for me, 80% of the time!) occurs when you have XP and an NTFS hard drive.This scanner cost me hours of headaches and hassles and I wish I could save you the same; I'm replacing it with an Epson and am hoping for the best.No other Canon product gave me these problems, but this is really a ripoff.
POC
It's great when it works. Just can't get one that keeps working 5 months later. My assistant bought one a year ago. 5 months after purchase it simply won't turn on. It gets replaced and works fine. Thinking this is just a quirk, I buy one myself. Sure enough, I go to use mine 4 months later (after about 10-12 uses total in that time) and it won't turn on at all.
TERRIFIC FILM SCANNER for this price/type
I got this scanner a few days back and already had the opportunity to use it. Before proceeding, let me highlight a few facts. I avidly take photos in slides and was looking for a cheap scanner fulfilling my needs of (a) publishing on web post manipulations in PS (b) Keeping a GOOD digital copy of the same, with myself (c) Being able to take max. a 4x6 print, as and when required; from the digital copy.

Excellent Scanner
I have scanned about 2,000 slides into my Macintosh computer. The results are excellent and the capability of doing 12 35 mm slides in a batch reduces the amount of time required.

Fantastic Scanner
I have had great success with the 9950F. The only problem I had was after the first time I used the scanner. I couldn't find it in my computer. The manuals etc., after loading software placed them on my desktop, but the scanner wasn't there. I hunted and hunted, then decided to put it in search and my computer searched all drives and it couldn't find it either. So I decided to reload the software and it came up already loaded, but the manuals etc. which were on the Desktop and would open when clicked, said they weren't loaded and they recommended loading this software. Anyway, after frustratingly searching, I accidentally found the 9950F under Import in Adobe Photoshop Elements II, Elements came with the scanner. Hope this tip helps someone else. The first thing I scanned, was a 35mm negative, 100 ASA Fuji film, which I enlarged to a 13X19 print; it is excellent. You can't tell it wasn't printed 10 years ago by a professional lab, before all this new technology. I highly recommend this scanner. Also be sure and place black paper over open spaces after loading negs or slides, as the instructions recommend. The scan goes much faster. I tried a shortcut and used the cover of a notebook and it left some open spaces and this took extra time. I bought some black paper and placed it at right angles so all open areas were covered. This sped up the scanning process immensely. I used an Epson scanner at our local library. It was a 2400X4800 dpi and it did a nice job. I read reviews for months before I parted with the cash for my own scanner and I am very pleased with my choice. ... Read more

Excellent Slide Scanner
This is an excellent slide scanner and does exactly what it is supposed to do very well.Yes, it is somewhat slow, but only in comparison to regular flatbed scanners.I have the slides scan at maximum resolution, but have the final image resized to about 20%.This keeps the file size manageable (about 5 MB per scan) and still provides an image that fills the screen.With the digital corrections on (which does make a huge difference on old family slides), and some minor post-processing, it has been taking about a minute per slide.

Great machine
I hesitated a moment ordering it after reading the several poor reviews.But then I remembered that every Canon product I ever bought was fantastic, so, I ordered this scanner.Yup, she's fantastic too. I don't know why them guys panne it because it is VERY VERY fast and does a great job.It makes a little noise but so what?It's an incredible machine for the bucks and I couldn't be more please.

The Worst Scanner I Have Ever Owned
I received this scanner as a gift as my old scanner (and the first one I ever bought, in 1997) was not going to be compatible with the computer I was having built.I work as a freelance graphic designer and artist, so having a scanner is essential to my work.I was happy to be getting this scanner since it was so much smaller than my old one but had about the same scanning area.I immediately hooked it up and set it up, and set to try scanning.
Not all that great.
I use to really like Canon products.But this particular scanner has changed that appeal.It is beastly slow, fairly noisy, and the software is inferior.I scanned 8 pages of Calculus notes directly into a PDF file and it worked fine.On a separate occasion I tried to scan a small 5.5 X 8.5 card into a PDF file, and it said the image was too big.The documentation and help files add to making the software inferior.It's difficult to locate specific help.Once you locate the help files, finding what you need is not worth the trouble.I feel bad for Canon, but after this experience I strongly recommend a comparable Epson if all CanoScan 4200F's are like this one. ... false advertising claims
The DocuPen holds, at a maximum, 10 pages.When I called customer service about this, I was told that the unit's capacity was being exceeded because I was scanning "high resolution images."Photos?No.Pictures?No.I was scanning printed pages from books.Apparently the DocuPen can only hold around 10 pages of normal text.The 50 page limit described in their advertising apparently refers to pages with a sentence or 2 on them, rather than actual pages in books or journals--very odd considering it's touted as a tool for students.A complete waste of time and money.I returned it and now I'm back to using the photocopier.Don't bother with this one, it's not at all what they claim.

LiDE 500F Scanner
For slightly over $100, this is a great little scanner.The ease of operation is outstanding.I bought it for my office, but it spends equal amounts of time on everyone else's desk.One push button for PDF is quick and easy.The stand allows a very small 'footprint' on a otherwise crowded desk. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

Great price and easy to use
I love this scanner.I took it out of the box, attached the cable, slipped a newspaper clipping into the scanner, hit the "scan" button, and had a beautiful image of the clipping, all within a couple of minutes.

SO far from its use i love it. I am in the comic industry so i need to scan line art, its crisp! ( i should get a 11x17 scanner but i dont have that cash) for the price its excellent. Its fast in scanning b/w and color.

Inexpensive solution for large format scanning
I think this scanner is really great and it's the only flatbed out there that I've seen below $300-400. My first one was really great, but it was flaky. This is my second one and it works as expected and points out what was wrong with the first one. Mechanically the first one suffered from power shorts from the start that I misinterpreted as a power saving feature, this one doesn't and is always on. I used the heck out of the first one and it had nice quality. Performance is nice. Best investment I've made. And so inexpensive I don't mind just outright buying a new one when the old one crapped out on me.

Terrific forscrapbooking/large projects
As a professional designer in the scrapbooking industry I completely rely on the dependability and color quality of this scanner for my 12x12 pages.I have never had a problem in 3 years and only now need a new one.A great value for a scanner of this size and price!Some adjusting in the contrast/brightness, even saturation is needed but I would expect to do that with any scan.That's part of the process unless you have $4-5,000 in extra cash lying around for the tip top line of scanners.

Don't believe the naysayers. This is a good machine. Most of these negative comments were written by folks who probably had no experience in scanning. There is a learning curve. DUH? No scanner scans everything perfectly right out of the box. Adjustments have to be made in order to get acceptable results. Beware for computers freezing up
I have used the 5000 ED for the past week and my computer (running XP home edition) keeps freezing up after scanning 2 - 25 slides, forcing me to perform a cold reboot. I have sent a request to Nikon, but haven't heard a word. If only I could return this unreliable piece of hardware.
Poor scanner crippled by even worse software
This scanner is extremely slow, taking up to several minutes per negative.
Expansive scanner with extermely poor and buggy software
One would expect that a company developing professional scanners would have the pride to develop software matching in quality. But you would be greatly disappointed to discover that this grand heavy hardware comes with poor software and therefore only amounts to a mediocre product not worth the money. The software (Nikon Scan) is buggy, leaky and crashes after about the second or third scan of a negative strip. I am running the latest version of Windows XP, with all the patches, and basically have to stop every thing else from running on my 320Ghz, 2GB new PC. This buys me just another single strip before it either freezes, forcing me to kill the application, or it silently crashes. I don't even want to go into the usability and documentation. Enough said. Microtek Flatbed Scanners
Please note:I purchased a somewhat different model - 6100 Pro - over 1 year ago.I was unhappy with the purchase from the onset and have subsequently purchased a Canon 8400F ...a great scanner.
Easy to Use, Dependable, Flexible & Affordable
I've had my ScanMaker i900 about a year now, and I couldn't be happier with it.It set up easily -- plug it in, load the software, restart, and go -- and has worked beyond expectations ever since.The only glitch occurred the first time I upgraded my Mac to OS 10.3, but once I did a quick search online and found an appropriate Microtek updater, it was golden again.I have since updated to OS 10.4.7 without any problems, so it was clearly just a typical software update situation.
Problems With Set Up But Worth the Trouble!
I bought the I900 in order to be able to scan negatives, slides and transparencies- as well as reflective items on the scanning bed's larger size scan area. The item arrived in a box the size of a coffin but fortunately most of that was due to packaging. The scanner itself is indeed quite a bit bigger (and much heavier) than conventional scanners, but the size is more manageable than the packaging might indicate. This is a solidly built machine. Terrible, terrible, terrible scanner
I bought this scanner refurbished, my first document feeder scanner for home use. All of the problems that these other users have had I am having in abundance also.

Buggy hardware and software. Software has multiple patches trying to correct many problems, but most of the patches don't work.Scannerfrequently "locks up."Much time wasted uninstalling and reinstalling software to get the scanner to work.The first scanner stopped working and was replaced by HP, then the replacement scanner stopped working outside the warranty period.Overseas tech support is polite, but ineffective.This scanner and the premature demise of my HP 3200 All In One printer have ended my use of HP peripherals in my office. ... Doesn't completely work with Acrobat
I got this to help me scan paper documents to save as pdfs to de-paper my office. Except for some difficulties clearing the rare paper jams, it seems to be fine mechanically.
Awesome scanner once you get the issues worked out
I agree that I did have some problems with paper jams in the ADF.But then I noticed that it seemed to mostly happen with smaller width paper (11" long, but less than 8.5" wide) and legal size documents when trying to duplex.Well, then I read the manual (duh!) and it clearly states that the scanner is not set up to duplex legal size documents or unusual sized paper.So I thought that was a problem.

Not for scanning large documents
The primary problem I have encountered with this scanner is more software related rather than the scanning quality or something else hardware related.
Bad scanner
I got this unit about two months ago. As other users have indicated with their units, my scanner has begun making a shrieking sound which is quite unbearable. The unit never scanned very well, and now it barely scans at all. This HP product is very attractive and well priced, but what does that mean if a piece of hardware is poor? It took me a while to figure out that the scanner was making the shrieking sound. I thought my computer was dying. I've had many scanners and never encountered anything like this before. Reading reviews here and elsewere has actually confirmed my suspicions that this is some type of design defect. I used an Agfa SnapScan 1212u for almost 8 years without a problem. I "upgraded" because I wanted a faster (USB-2 as opposed to USB-1) scanner, and a unit that had slide and film transfer capabilites. This scanner was never much faster than my Agfa and the quality is on much, much lower. Terrible. I would advise anyone reading this to buy another product.

Hunk of garbage
I wish I could give this heap of trash 0 stars. The software is buggy, it installs applications that run every time you log in (Mac OS X) and they took extra time to make it unbelievably difficult to disable.

I was in need of a scanner and after reading reviews in pcworld,pc mag and othersdecided on the s400. bought it locally and followed the install instructions that came with the product. First install software,then connect scanner to power and usb it to computer. I was ready for my first scan. Unfortunatly the driver for the scanner that is included did not recognize the scanner. So i called support up on my dime and was on the phone with them for over 30 minutes and they told me to download the updated driver which is on the web site. I did,uninstalled the driver that came with it and installed the new driver. It worked for about 20 min and then the scanner would not activate. So unstead of calling support again i returned it. To pay for support during the installation process is not for me. I am sure this is a fine unit,but for me it did not work. ... Read more

not worth buying
I have own two visioneer scanners, they work for a short period of time them start having trouble with them.Contacting Visioneer is a wate of time, they will try anything to get out of fxing your scanner, which is guarantee for ome year.I will not buy another one, and sugest that you do the same.HPmakes a scanner that has a year guarantee and they will replace theirscanner.

Its not locked damnit
This scanner worked extremely well for about a year (interesting that's when the warrenty craps out). I then get the Lock error refered to above. It appears that the main bulb is burned out. I was acctually pertty impressed with there tech support. I got hold of a real person in less than 30 seconds. They offered to send be a new one If I could prove I bought it in the last year.

short life
Scanner laster a little over a year before burning up. Mind you it has a one year warranty. This was with light use. I've hadUMAX scanners for years and never had issues with them.

Scanner stopped working one week after warranty expired, which means this scanner only lasted one year.Microtek will not accept the scanner back for repair even at my cost and does not refer you to an authorized dealer for repair.The response is "buy a new one."The time frame for this response is two weeks.Please take the time to consider another brand!

Nice Scanner
This scanner is the first scanner I have ever used that I am acutally happy with.The PaperPort software is a powerful tool.ADF feeds legal and letter size sheets very well, scans quite quickly, although not as fast as some.Overall, I am very happy with the product.

JUNK - don't waste your money or time!
My company bought this scanner about a year and a half ago.We have 10 - 15 people who use it intermittently.It does not see heavy use.From the beginning we've had trouble with it jamming and feeding multiple pages.The cover to open it is very hard to snap open, and it won't recover from a jam without us turning off the scanner and rebooting the computer.I discovered that if I change the automatic document feeder pad assembly every 3 months or so, which I should not have to do, it helps the jamming and misfeed issue.Recently I went to order these pads, which were $20.00 apiece, and I couldn't find them on Xerox's website.When I called them they said this item was no longer being sold individually, but in a kit with cleaning solution and 2 pads.So what would have cost $40.00 - bad enough - now costs $100.00 !! As if we haven't spent enough money and frustration on this thing.I am going to do my best to get rid of this thing and buy one that works!

Some problems - but an adequate unit.
For a cheap sheet-feed scanner the 510 seems an adequate unit (I paid £185 including delivery and VAT) and I've used mine daily for 8 months scanning many thousands of pages. After a paper jam the scanner will not automatically recover - and refuses to continue scanning. In Windows XP the solution is to switch off the scanner for 10 seconds then on again. After up to 90 seconds the scanner will reset itself and the job can be continued. But who'd guess that that was possible ? The instructions make no mention of it and apparently owners have been starting jobs all over again after a jam. The software has worked flawlessly. ... Read more
