5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this or any other TI or Sharp over the HP 12C
Why does the CFA exam require this calculator?Probably because in order to use the HP 12C properly you need to bring the manual with you.If you don't have the manual with you at all times when using the 12C you can get the wrong answer.Take the example in T. Hope's review, but try calculating using n= a payment with a decimal place, such as 24.5.Then try the same thing on an HP 12C.Oops, you don't get the same answer. That is because the HP12C doesn't allow you to enter payment terms with decimal places in the normal manner, even though it looks like you can.You need the manual to do it correctly. The real problem is that you don't even know when you need the manual. If you enter 24.5 the same way as 24 on the HP 12C, you won't get the right answer.Any TI or Sharp financial calculator however will give you the right answer. What other surprises are in store for those who use the 12C?

3-0 out of 5 stars Looks really nice.. But Horrible button
I don't know why CFA requires the candidates to use this calculator. It's better than HP 12C only in terms of simple calculation. You have to check everytime after you press the button, in case the system doesn't respond when you press it.

If you bought yourself a financial calculator during the 1980s, chances are it was this bad boy. Nothing has changed since its introduction--it still uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), is easy and versatile in programming, and has a thin, sturdy casing. Certainly, there's been newer, fancier calculators introduced since, but there's something to be said for the quality of classics.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rev HP 12C
HP 12C is an excellent product. Robust, very easy to handle, comes with a nice leather case. There is a higher version of same product but only HP 12C and TI BA II plus are allowed in CFA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, inexpensive calculator
It does take a full cover removal to replace the batteries, but when calculating NPV of my network of metalworking sites at [...], it saved me a lot of time. It's not as "pretty" as the standard finance HP calculator that's been around for ages, but at under $20 from your local WalMart, it's a steal! BTW, the cover is difficult to remove at times and the LCD screen is a bit underpowered (a LED version would have been nicer), but it's still a bargain.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good functions, bad display
I bought this calculator a few years ago for a finance class, and it was easy to use and performed well. I am now taking some other classes that require present value calculations, so I dusted off the calculator. It worked for about a week before the display started malfunctioning. I bought new batteries as other people did, but that is not the problem. I also reset it in the various ways described in the manual, but the display was still malfunctioning. It is very disappointing since the calculator was not actually used that much.

1-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY...
I have owned this calculator for 3 months and the dispay is no longer working properly.Parts of the numbers have "burned out" so only parts of the numbers show now.At first I thought it was the batteries.SO I bought replacements and that was NOT the problem. It is now completely useless. At $30, this calc is 10x's more than what a basic calc costs, so that is no excuse for such a poor quality product.PLEASE read the reviews - they all say the SAME thing.I was a fool for buying this.I hope this will help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Reliable, but highly useful.
Recently the screen on my HP 10bII Financial Calculator stopped working. At first I thought I simply needed new batteries, unfortuntally this was not the case.I owned it for just over two years before it broke down on me.So what did I do?I purchased another one. While I am disappointed with the reliability, I find it to be a highly convienent useful calculator.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold, uh, Silver Standard in Financial Calculators
No, the quality heft and feel of the original (1981) 12C calculators made in Oregon, USA, is not quite there in the latest "Made in China" incarnation. But just about everything else is better than the original, including speed of program execution (3-5X faster), number of programmable steps (now 400), and additional support for Algebraic input mode on top of the default RPN. Now it even has an Undo function, albeit one of fairly limited usefulness, in addition to the fairly useful backspace function. This thing is still the "gold" standard in its category, with a silvery finish or otherwise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some kinda cheap look
I needed a financial calculator and I had received a lot of good feedback from 12c owners. This added to my experience with two HP calculators one 15c and one 48G, told me I couldn't go wrong with this special edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT Choice for a Financial Calculator or 12C Upgrade!
This will sound crazy to everyone except those like me, but I have become an HP 12C FANATIC because of this calculator. I have gone through the entire manual (with the exception of programming) and thoroughly enjoyed learning all of this calculator's features.

1-0 out of 5 stars 17BII+ problem
My biggest issue with the 17BII+ is the one that apparently plagues other users as well.My first and sometimes second keystroke doesn't always register. It happens randomly and is a major problem for me. I've gone through four of these calculators and three of the four had the same problem. I kept returning them until I got one that works.
3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Upgrade
I bought the HP 17BII+ to replace and to upgrade my HP 19bII folding calculator. And for the money I spent (about the same, 12 years later), I'm a little disappointed. Going down from 4 lines of display, to 2 lines of display, the buttons feeling cheaper and the removal of unit conversion for measurements. But on the plus side, everything else seems to be the same and the battery cover doesn't look like it is going to fly off.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good calculator
After my HP 17bII was knocked off a counter and killed the screen I looked to replace it.I soon found the 17bII+ and ordered from Amazon. After reading some of the reviews I was a little concerned but mine works just fine.It does not convey the same feel of quality as earlier HPs. It just seems lighter and less solid. The keys have good feel but don't match the feel of the many earlier HPs I have owned. However, it gets the job done, and may last as long as the earlier models, but if you are looking for the HP "feel" you may be disappointed. The case however is a great improvement over the 17bII. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The HP calulator is a dinosaur - this is mortgage qualifying!
There's not too much to say about this calulator - it does the job well. However, There's really only 4 buttons you use consistantly - Loan Amt/Pmt/Term/Interest.And they do make a calculator that just has those four buttons (plus calculator keys).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent buy
This buy was an excellent choice. It does all the basic functions, plus helpful smarty-pants extras too.And can you believe the price? And no batteries! No problem! It's pretty easy to use--just look up the higher-ed. functions you need from the instruction booklet. It's also light, seems very durable (I've been using mine for near 3 months now), and it's just like my old battery operated one.Best of all, it's cheap :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value for money
Earlier I possesed a Texas Instruments TI30XA Scientific Calculator but had to buy a new calculator since I lost my previous one. So I decided to try some other make and bought Casio FX-260. This calculator is much more user-friendly than Texas Instruments and is much cheaper too! I use this calculator for solving Calculus 2, Mechanics and General Chemistry related problems. They work great and sometimes I feel it was good that I lost my previous calculator.

4-0 out of 5 stars This really helps in Algrebra 1 - 2
I love this little piece of machinery! It's cheap, durable, holds large buttons, and can even calculate fractions! How common is that?! Unfortunately I'm the only one in my 9th Grade Algebra 1 class that has one. The only 2 things that bother me about it are: Dust/dirt gets stuck on the rubbery like buttons very easy and makes them look hairy and feel putrid. And the look of it, It looks so retro it could of been made in the late 70's. Well anyways this is good for the SAT's and is even Solar powered, what a plus! Casio all the way! Texas Instruments can kiss Casio's butt! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT calculator especially for those in elementary, middle, high school
Ok I'm a high school student and got this calculator last year for honors chem, my other scientific calculator (TI-30X) just wasn't sufficient. But this one is great! If you're in chemistry, it has easy-to-use conversions (from pounds-kilos, gallons-liters etc.), and for chem and other sciences like bio, and physics it has constants such as Avogadro's number and Planck's constant, which make solving problems easier.Plus, for math, it's the easiest scientific caluclator I have encountered, and has many features. The only drawbacks I can see are that it does not have a two-line display and you cannot go back and see previous operations and the snap-on cover is a bit awkward at first. However, the screen is easy to get used to, and once you do, the calculator is perfect. For students, this has all the features which you need up through Alg 2 and trig (and probably further) and is simple to use.Plus, you can use it on the PSAT, SAT, SAT II's, ACT, AP exams!Though other users may be right that you can find cheaper calculators with more features from brands other than TI, I would say that for those in elementary, middle, or high school, its easiest to stick with TI, that's what everyone else, including the teacher uses, and that's what the teachers in my classes have always taught us how to use new features using TI.By far I would say its the best scientific calculator with the most useful features that I have encountered, and your best bet if you are still a student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expensive. Too expensive, really.
The TI-36X isn't fancy, but it works. It's very similar to the simple calculators I used in high school during the 1980s (Sharp EL-506S). Alas, it has some significant design flaws; I can't honestly recommend it as you can find much better calculators for less money.
4-0 out of 5 stars Best budget scientific calculator
I recently bought this to replace my 12-year old TI-35X scientific calculator. This model has the same 40-button layout and performs every function that I need. The buttons are clearly labeled and do not stick unlike some other inexpensive calculators. The `2nd' and `3rd' functions are easily distinguishable from the other keys.Unfortunately, the flimsy case awkwardly snaps onto the unit unlike the bulkier TI-35X sliding hard case. Amazon shows a hard case above, so perhaps I have a slightly different version of the TI-36X.Most people don't need an elaborate graphing calculator so consider this budget unit instead of spending significantly more for a fancier model. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars so so
I have a degree on banking and finance, a master degree in finance. I used to do all my calculations with my trusty HP 19BII (similar to actual 17BII). But it don't work anymore, so i had to look for a replecement and bought the casio fc-200v. For interest calculations and cash flow analisis it is ok. But if you want (and you will do) make basic aritmetic (+ / -) there is no 1000's separator!!!!!!! yeah in a financial calculator!!!! In finance and accounting you do a lot of this kind of operations. The solve funtion on the HP where you can create your own menu with any formula is something that put that brand on the first place. If you dont mind the lack of 1000's separator and do only basic interest and CFA this is the one for you. I you pretent to do more complex calculations go for the HP 17BII+. In my country there is no Texas Instruments, so i cant tell anything about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Reliable
I bought FC200V in lieu of HP17BII+ due to the price and reviews written about FC200V on its reliability. Unfortunately, calculation on amortisation is incorrect. In my case, the amortisation involves few series with different frequencies. Another upsetting result is in calculating TVM for an ordinary housing loan financing, FC200V could not produce BLC. PRIN and INT are not of any problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Poweful tool for the scene shop
Building scenery for the theater we are always under a time & acuracy crunch. The Construction master pro DT helps us to handle both foot and Inch manipulations and construction detailing. The rise & run & diagonal calculations are a timesaver when we are dealing with raked platforming or out of true flats. The compound miter key has already saved me hours of fussing on oddball scenic units. The ability to store risers heights in the stair calculations allows us to easily determine stair details by using our stock, but not building code compliant stairs. The calculators flexibility is one of its greatest assetts and one of its great drawbacksas well. I wish that there was a help system in the unit remind the user of how to use some of the more arcane controls. The included instruction book is great, but abook is not the fastest way when you need to use a function now that you last used months ago.

This is the latest incarnation of a tool I've been using for a few years now.The more I use it, the more dependent I become.Provides quick, accurate answers to almost all shop problems & equations. The memory function is a little confusing at first, but practice makes perfect.Excellent tool, well worth the money. There's a pocket sized version available also, called the "Ultra Measure Master", also very handy. ... The simple truth is that some of us were built were math, and some of us weren’t. If calculating how many gallons of paint you’ll need makes you want to hire the job out, this little calculator will change your mind. All you have to do is measure and tell it what you want to know. It’s programmed to figure out quantity needed for all kinds of materials: bricks and blocks, wallboard, gravel, lumber, paint, roof shingles, studs, tile and wallpaper. You tell it specifically what grout width you want, or how far apart your fence posts will be, and it work everything out. It even works in reverse, figuring out mind-sputtering things like, how much wall will 7 gallons of this paint cover? It handles fractions to the 1/64th inch without faltering, and It’s slim, light, and less than 3-by-5-inches, so it fits neatly in your pocket. It’s powered by long-life lithium batteries, and the auto-shutoff feature gives you even more battery life. And of course, it works like a regular calculator, too, so you can add up how much you saved by not hiring out that paint job.Read more

The calculator is easy to use and has a multitude of applications. The availability of the many features has enabled me to maximize the accuracy and efficiency of my projects. 5-0 out of 5 stars Use it Constantly
I bought this calculator last year for my husband for Father's Day.Needless to say, it is hardly out of arm's reach for him--he is constantly using it for all of his different projects.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
I am an avid do-it-yourselfer and do a variety of projects around the house. I found this little gem in the local hardware store and had a great time playing with it, so I bought it. I, of course, had no intention of trusting it implicitly but that soon changed. I have owned this thing for 2.5 years now and have used it on several large projects. Now I rely upon it for all sorts of things. It makes it so easy to estimate exactly what I am going to need, with confidence, even when I am not entirely sure what it is that I am doing.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a pile of junk.
A $150 calculator that I am going to trash.I had the same problem with the keyboard (terrible response); I struggled with it for about a year and then called HP.My warranty was out, so Hp suggested I install an update, which I did.Now the keys are firing off 3 or 4 digits with one press of the button. This is ridiculous.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't know what has happened to HP
I got this calculator about a year ago. There was some locking up problems and sometimes it would not turn on. I updated all the ROMs like HP instructed. Finally, I got a replacement from HP. But it turns out it was some old refurbished one that the enter key smashed in after I used it for 10 minutes. I had to pay to send this one back and now, they sent me another old used replacement. Most of the gold paint has flaked off the front of this one and also around the side trim. It started missing keystrokes with the latest ROM, so I had to go find an old ROM from last year on the Internet. The keyboard is piss poor and makes a "thunk" noise, annoying when I am taking a test and to the people around me. Also, the right shift key started feeling loose today.

3-0 out of 5 stars HP18'sAlgebra mode: No precedence for multiplication/division over Addition/Substraction
I bought this calculator on the basis of good review here.
5-0 out of 5 stars I wish HP would re-issue this calculator
After the classic HP12C, this is the best financial calculator they ever made. My old one hasn't worn out, but I bought a NIB replacement at auction for when it does. This has all the functionality of the more cumbersom 19B, but in a better designed handheld size. I love my 12C, but this is the calculator I wish I had in grad school. The keys are fantastic, the menus are logical and fluid, the case is super rugged, and it is just all around excellent. I'm a messy klutz and have dropped mine and sat on it dozens of times and it still works like a the day I turned it on. I wish HP would re-issue it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it, but no Trigonometric Functions
Super durable and reliable: I've had this calculator since 1992, I used it for my BA and my MSc.It has outlasted 4 laptops.
