Great little personal fax
I use this only about 5-6 times a month, so no heavy use; but it works well, goes fairly quickly, hasn't jammed or had a line error yet, and the faxed pages are clear and legible. Easy to setup and program, took about 5 minutes to set name, phone #, and other stuff.

Excellent - very happy
After reading reviews here I hesitated but happened to see the same machine (but without duplex capability) at a work site and that clinched it for me.
Watch Out for Power Consumption
Great Printer with lots of neat features.HOWEVER, the printer uses 1024 WATTS or 9.1 Amps when it powers up to print a page or make a copy.This has caused me alot of problems.
Fatal Flaw
I have had several Brother MFC's throughout the years. All of them have had a by-pass where one could feed either an envelope or a sheet of labels through the front of the machine, open a door in the back of the machine and then print with a straight paper path so the envelope doesn't get rinkled and the labels don't start to come off the carrier sheet, which is especially important if one uses Stamp.com's labels where the same sheet of labels may be printed on up to 10 or more times as one uses up the each label. Other than the foregoing DESIGN FLAW, its a good machine but for me, this is a FATAL FLAW so I took it back to Office Depot. It was interesting to get the reaction of a couple of techs at Brother as they too couldn't believe the engineers forgot this critical function! I will just have to be satisfied with my MFC-8440 until they come out with a new 30 page per minute duplexing machine with the old by-pass capability. ... Read more

Nice, Compact Machine!!!
I've had very good luck with brother products! This is my fourth Brother product. We have a color laser printer, two black & white laser printers, and another fax. All have been very reliable and by looking around a little on the net you can find the supplies at very resonable prices.
Jamming Piece o' Junk!
I bought this machine based on the good reviews I found here. I have had it for one month and it does nothing but jam.Now the two week return policy at the store has expired and I am left with a jamming piece o' junk.
AWFUL.JUST AWFUL.
I am shocked by the amount of positive reviews on this site.Let me tell you about my experience.I bought this machine in June of 2005.In one year, I have replaced this machine THREE TIMES.All three times, I got error messages that the toner cartridge was out (Toner Life End) even when new toner cartridges were put in.I do give high marks to Brother for its customer service, though.Each time I had a problem, I called and they sent out a replacement by FedEx along with materials for me to send back the broken one.But when the fourth replacement arrived last week and I turned it on and got an immediate paper jam message, I had enough.I had a similar issue with a Brother mutlifunction machine I purchased around the same time.I am done with Brother products. ... Terrific Printer for the Money; Handles the Basics Well
I also did plenty of research and bottom line ... I was looking for a multi-function (printer, fax, copy, scan) that did wireless out of the box without any added print server hardware and so forth. I purchased it for slightly over $200 from Amazon. This unit worked great out of the box. The wireless config was a breeze and the color screen made configuration especially easy. It prints well, copies well, and the software for the PC seems to work nicely and simply. This is not a top of the line multi-function ... but if you need quick and easy wireless printing, decent print quality, and don't print huge volume ... this is a nice choice.

Must be a better machine
Replaced an old Sharp fax machine with what I thought was newer and better machine. WRONG!! if you don't baby it , it will not feed multiple pages. likes to pull two or three sheets at a time. What a pain! Other functions are not as intuitive as one would expect.

Absolute Junk
I purchased this model around 6 months ago, and the problems continue every day.This machine won't fax multiple pages...instead it likes to pull the whole 5 or 6 page set through at once, thus jamming and causing headache.Secondly, the machine likes to jam up while receiving.I am not the only one I know with these problems.

Got a problem here
I purchased the fax machine on the internet for the purpose of making it my personal fax machine for home use.I have internet phone service and it seems that this fax machine doesn't do too well in the digital world.Tech support told me that sometimes it will work and sometimes not! Nowhere in the sales process was I informed about this little problem.Not even in the packaging that came with the machine. Not a happy guy.

This fax machine has not been around long enough for me to give a really full assessment.However, I thought setup was a snap, the menus are easy to access and follow, AND it feeds pages better when faxing more than one sheet in comparison to a fax machine four times the cost!This is a nice, basic fax machine.

Excellent little fax machine and priced right.
Ordered this through Amazon and was happy with response time and shipping.This fax machine is ideal for a small office/home office with a dedicated fax line.Believe it or not, I just replaced my old Sharp fax that used the thermal rolls which I prefer since no ink supplies were necessary.But so far this works great.It has way more features and funtionality than I will ever need since I just send and receive occassional faxes.Quality is excellent and set up was quick and easy.Footprint is small too so it doesn't take much desk space.I only have one small complaint.The lowest number of rings you can set it to when receiving a fax is 2 rings.I would prefer a Zero setting, so I don't have to hear it ring at all.But at this price, how can you complain?It's worth the $90 (including shipping.) ... Great fax/phone
We bought this fax because of its slim design compared to larger faxes as well as its price. We have had no problems, works flawlessly. We love the size and ease of using the machine. Would recommend this to anyone in need of a fax in a small space, home or office or anywhere you may need one. There great to have in the house just in case you ever need to fax anything.

this is the worst fax machine I've ever had. The paper gets jammed and you have to put the pages once at the time. The quality of the printed page is really bad.

The (almost) perfect Multi-function printer!
This was my third Brother MFC printer. I was trying to replace my current MFC9600 that has been been excellent for more than 5 years. I wanted the duplex functionality, the better print quality, as well as the some of the additional features.
No warnings on the box - but good enough!
Oh how I wanted this, I like brother printers - and a wireless one that supports OS9 OSX, and Windows too, USB, wireless, or ethernet - wowee!Then I opened the box, does not do wireless with OS9. Oh well, then I plugged it in and every UPS in my office chimed and the lights flickered when I turn it on. Yep, even plugged straight into the wall, this room heater uses 9.1 Amps, and I bet 11 when it first powers up. So, this just won't work in an average home office - we have 15 amp lines - a few computers, a TV, a radio, a light, and that can add up to 7 amps - add this fax machine and pop a breaker. I never got a chance to test it, but it sure sounds good. If you have a 20-amp circuit, or can dedicate a 15-amp circuit to it, I'm sure it's a great machine.

Does what it is supposed to do
A nice, basic fax/copier.The only warning is if you have VOIP, contact their customer service so that the fax will work with the information packets that are sent through VOIP.Otherwise, it will not work properly.

This fax machine stinks
I hate this machine, it worked for maybe a year and then it started jamming every time I attempt to send or recieve a fax. Get a higher quality fax machine. This machine is garbage.

As a network printer it works great, but...
I also have a problem with the printer creasing envelopes.It appears to shift the flap of the envelope slightly while feeding it through the fuser and the heat and pressure causes another crease about 1/8" offset from the original one.

I have been unable to get this machine to stop creasing envelopes.It looks quite sloppy and affects the print in places. At times it is better than others but usually I get a big crease across the bottom left corner and a smaller crease across the return address.

Useless when paper stops feeding
I use this mainly for an office phone with the occasional incoming or outgoing fax, or to make a few copies. It worked OK to begin with, although the phone quality is not great. But it's extremely touchy about what kind of paper you feed, and finally (after 6 months?) it wouldn't feed any kind of paper--so I can't send faxes or copy anything. I think it still receives faxes, but it ran out of ink quickly. At least, I think it's out of ink; I can't test it, because it won't copy. Tech support was responsive, but their response was that there was no solution other than taking it somewhere to be fixed, which can't be cost-effective. So although this wasn't an expensive machine, it turned out to be a waste of money.

This machine is a garbage
Had used it for about 16 months and within the last 12 months I was thinking to throw it to the cemend floor from the roof of my house after every time I used it. And today, I did.

I should have paid attention to the 3 stars other people gave this fax. That's all it deserves. It is noisy and slow and hard to program compared to my old Panasonic (which I am going to repair and start using again). Also the telephone receiver is so tiny and has such poor reception it has to be held tight to the ear. Sending a fax takes forever. The first time I sent a fax I thought it had lost the connection as it took so long to go through. If I hadn't already thrown away the packing materials I might have tried to return it. HP 1040 fax is likely to be incompatible with VoIP Network
I am a Comcast Digital telephone Network subscriber (which is VoIP). My new 1040 fax will not send faxes, although it will receive them.
A little too quirky, not functional enough
Bought this to replace my old Sharp with the expensive and wasteful film roll cartridge. This one has a similar footprint, but only the ink cartridge is better than the old machine. Nothing else works as well, particularly:

Okay as long as you never need to use it.
I use the fax to send in a time sheet every other week and then every now and then when something can't be e-mailed.It has been fine to send in the time sheets but just today I was expecting a 40 page fax for my husbands job out of town and only got 12 sheets out of it because I couldn't feed the paper through the jammed fax machine fast enough.So, I had to depend on the memory and that only saved up about 12 1/2 pages.Oh, well.Lots of lost time on this one.I'll be purchasing a better fax machine and having it shipped tomorrow.

This machine is horrible.I have had only two successful transfers with this machine that were legible and they were on the day I bought the machine.The rolling mechanism used to scan documents is terrible, jams all the time.I have had plenty of complaints about people receiving my faxes and saying they can't read a thing.The quality is very very very low on received and sent faxes. Great plain paper fax - not thrilled with the film required
I bought this fax machine to do business from home when needed.I was surprised to find the fax film needed for incoming faxes ran out so quick.It must have been less than 40 pages of fax and then my film ran out.Bummer.The phone works fine unless you're talking next to a running microwave.Otherwise, great fax.

Wonderful product - Would make a GREAT gift
If you are looking for a quick copy, answering machine AND fax, easy machine to set-up and use right out of the box, and no special equipment needed, this is the fax to buy.Love that it has a cordless phone.Also love the fact that it knows the difference between an incoming call and a fax. The only problem with the cordless phone is that it isn't a long range use phone.Can only go from my office to half-way through the house before I start to hear static.But that is the only downside of this product.This would make a GREAT gift for anyone.

Looks better than it works
Sure looks nice, but looks can be deceiving!I bought this for work I have had it for two days and will be returning it tomorrow.I had to stand there and feed page by page or otherwise it would jam up.I got 2 faxes to go through that way and now the ink film is out.I would need to purchase a new one for $25.At that cost I am better off going down the steet and have the copy place do it for less!I am greatly disappionted in this unit and would urge anyone to NOT buy it! ... How to network
I bought this machine solely for simple faxing. I was attracted by the fact that it is network ready.I read the first review before buying this machine. I did not buy brother's optional hardware to connect the machine to my network (200.00 is alot to make this machine network ready). I bought Buffalo's ethernet adapter, and I connected this machine and my Dell desktop to the ethernet adapter. The fax was working on my network in 1 hour as a printer and fax machine. However, in order for the fax/printer machine to work you will need to download all of the drivers and firmware update from the Brother's site.I downloaded all necessary software to my desktop, and two laptops in under an hour, and the brother's machine was network ready within 1 hour.
Needs disc.
Overall, I am pleased with this fax machine/printer.I am not sure why Brother does not send a disc with it; it would make it so much easier to use.I haven't been able to scan yet, as the manual refers me to the disc, and there is no disc.The print quality is good.The fax works with our distinctive ring tone, which is what we were mainly looking for.The phone doesn't sound great, if you get too close to the receiver there is an echo but, all-in-all, it is a pretty good little machine.

Simple Set Up
Network was simple to set up using XP.The only downside is that the drivers are not include in the box - you have to download them from Brother and its about a 90mb download.After that, connect your cables and your set.I dont know why everyone is saying it wont work with XP or is difficult to set up.The whole process took about 5 min. ...
