5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bargain!!!
This DVD player is great for the price & was shipped to me in perfect condition. It plays DVDs nicely & was compatable with other non-RCA equipment. Overall a good deal & I'd reccomend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT CLEARPLAY
Ignore the other reviews, this unit does not have clearplay. It's just a less than ordinary, somewhat overpriced for what it is DVD player. You must now order Clearplay DVD players from clearplay directly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
Absolutely one of the best purchases I have made! The attention to detail in all the filters provides a wonderful viewing experience. Depending on your personal preferences that you control, obscene language, excessive violence, explicit sex scenes, etc are simply filtered out so well that the movie being viewed doesn't miss a beat. It's as if it that gunk was never there in the first place! The ClearPlay people are constantly adding new filters for the most recent movies and all your favorite classics.

1-0 out of 5 stars A mistake
I puchased this unit (a B-stock unit) recently on Amazon. The unit broke (ie, could not read any DVD or CD) after being played for only 4 times, and unfortunately this occurred after the 14-day of return/exchange deadline.Even though the transaction was smooth, the item is useless at this point unless Sony will be willing to help out.
5-0 out of 5 stars Smart DVD player
One of the nicer features on this DVD player (apart from the affordable price) is its ability to remember where you left off on a DVD, even if you've played different DVDs on the player in between. So if you were watching a DVD of a TV show earlier in the week and watched several DVD movies in between, when you put that TV show DVD back in, it'll remember where you stopped.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Video/Mediocre Audio
I bought the SONY NS775V mainly for its 12bit/108MHz video DAC.It that respect, it did not disappoint. The 480P video from the SONY NS775V is significantly better than the video from my Panasonic S47.

4-0 out of 5 stars Firmware Upgrade Fixes Problem with 16x Media
I've owned the D-R4 since January 2006 and have not experienced any problems when using 4x and 8x speed discs from Maxell and Taiyo-Yuden.I took a chance on the Maxell 16x discs, which were on sale recently at Office Depot, and did have a problem finalizing them.As pointed out by someone else, the D-R4 records to the 16x media fine but gives you an "ERR 14" when finalizing. When I called Toshiba customer service (1-800-319-6684) about this, the rep sent me a firmware upgrade that fixed the problem.
2-0 out of 5 stars FREE FIRM-WARE UPDATE FOR D-R4
My unit like many others, broke after a few months.I was told by customer service that I would have to ship it in and pay 70.00 for a repair.Thankfully, I called back and got the help desk who informed me that there is a free firm-ware upgrade for this unit.
1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent recorder after fixed problem.
I'm updating my earlier review, which gave only 1 star due to the machine's general bugginess, incl frequent freeze-ups, failure to turn on for a scheduled recording, or failing to recognize a disc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plays everything except PAL
This dvd player has been working good.I have not had a problem that the other reviewers here have mentioned. All my dvds play the first time, except pal format dvds. I do not have to reload them over and over.I have been very satisfied with this player and I have had it for a while now.Plays divx, xvid.I just wish it played PAL, but if I use ifoedit I can make it play the pal movies.Overall I recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly Good
I have had the problem several other reviewers have had (i.e. - some DVD's not being recognized)...but for the most part it works way better than the RCA DVD Recorder that I have which constantly stops in the middle of DVD's and can never finish a movie without a skip or a problem. So in turn I take it to my bedroom and pop it in this machine and it always works. So I guess it's the lesser of two evils in my household.I'm not an RCA fan but my Dad works for RadioShack and we get alot of this stuff pretty cheap. You get what you pay for I suppose.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor Product-Worse Customer Service
My unit never worked well. Had the same problems everyone else listed. Took multiple reloading of DVD's before it would recognize and start playing and numerous times it would stop playing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage
DVD players should last a few years at least. With light usage (3-4 times per week at most) this Toshiba died after less than a year. I am so annoyed that I have to go through the warranty process for such a cheap piece of merchandise. Getting "bad" disc, tried unplugging and reset and got another 1 hour play out of it, now nothing again and it won't reset. Thanks for the landfill, Toshiba.

1-0 out of 5 stars This unit falls short
Looking to get another unit to go with my Toshiba RD-SX32, I went for the HX-900. This unit falls incredibly short in comparison and has me scratching my head, why did I get this unit! I have a great basis for comparison as the Toshiba does so many things that the SONY either cannot or does much worse.
4-0 out of 5 stars great machine but TVGOS is terrible
5 months later: TVGOS is getting more stable but still fails once a month or every other month. I advise using a little UPS with this recorder because all your TVGOS gets lost if the power blinks. The DVR is still working perfectly.
2-0 out of 5 stars Steep learning curve - program guide confusing.....
Unfortunately - in the 8 months I have had the HX-900 it has never worked

No Luck.Another Toshiba place (50 miles away)I was asked to bring the TV in to them! This is a heavy TV set!! I then tried returning this item to Amazon who would not accept it because it was now more than 30 days since it was purchased. Someone else here has no picture...well I have no sound.Sound works out of the headphone jack but not from the built-in speakers. We've had it for about 9 months and it's always been kept in a case and rarely moved from the back seat of the car.It does get VERY hot and you need to be careful not to just shut the movie off and close the top as it's really NOT OFF.It has no auto-shut off so very early on I discovered it would continue to spin away until you actually turn the physical switch off unlike a notebook computer etc. Also the controls are terrible in layout and design. Even the volume switch is reverse of the intuitive motion. When sitting in front of the unit you would think upwards is louder...not according to Magnavox designers! No up is down and down is up.Outstanding!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Electronic Devise!!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Mostly dead on arrival
I've had the MPD820/17 for a few hours now.Out of 10 commercial widescreen DVD's I have tested on it, it refuses to play 7.The other 3 play just fine. This makes me think the firmware needs to be updated, but I have not been able to find any way to do this myself. It will play NONE of the DVD+R disks I have burned myself on a DVD recorder.I will be very happy with this machine if Philips customer support can solve the playback problem, but I am not optimistic. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Non-Hollywood DVDs play sporadically
I bought two Astar DVD-3200 units to play training DVDs produced in-house.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect much
I have the 3100 model of this DVD player that I got on sale for very cheep. It plays DVDs well, but that's it.My huge complaint about this DVD player is that you have to stand 3 feet directly in front (not at an angle) to get the remote to work.If you are off by even 30 degrees it won't work.My family bought two so I know it's not a one product problem.

1-0 out of 5 stars A non-starter and very difficult to get help
This item new did not work. The Memorex customer support advised its return and had no suggestions to get it to work.It is no longer produced.I would advise against purchasing this DVD non-player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player.
I don't know what the other reviews problem was, cause this thing just works.I bought it for the spare bedroom, but now it's replaced my $600+ Mitsubishi DVD player I got several years ago.I currently have 3 of this unit, each purchased during the past year at Target.I think I paid $59.99 for the first one and $49.99 for the other 2.I use one to travel with. It's small, so it fits nicely in my luggage.I've never had a problem with it and it's been handled by the airport luggage handlers on about 10 different trips. Also, this thing plays every format out there. It plays, DVD, SVCD, CD+G, MP3, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, and karioke disks. My local Target is out.I hope they get some more, cause I'll buy them for gifts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Little DVD Player Out There
I bought a Memorex E-Gear DVD player model MVD2030 at Target about 1 year ago. This is the best player I've seen. It can play virtually any format. CD audio, DVD, CDR MP3 disks, CDR MPG disks (for those of you into music videos), DVD MP3 disks both DVD+R and DVD-R.Yea, and it can play cdr's full of jpgs too. It can't play avi files but I haven't found anything else that can do this either. Need built in avi decoders as well as mp3 and mpg decoders. I've yet to see any other dvd player do all that.As far as reliability, I've had no problems and I even bought another one.I've bought 3 other dvd players, Sony DVP NS325, Apex AD703, and a Philips Vertical DVD590M.The only one of the others dvd players that comes close to comparing to the Memorex is the Philips. The Philips can play a wider range of bitrates when it comes to mp3s but doesn't do as well at rendering mpgs on the large screen of a television. I was suprised at how will some of the mpgs look on the tv.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good DVD Player, and I got it free!
This player is very convenient for long trips. If you want to save the money, you can get it Free from this web site: awesomestufffree.com/portabledvd

1-0 out of 5 stars Broken
I searched long and hard for this, read reviews and felt this would be the perfect gift for my 15 year old son for his birthday.I charged the battery and wrapped it up and it never worked. The door was closed but the player said it was open, therefore would not play the dvd.We sent it back. It's basic feel was cheap and plastic like. We don't know what the picture quality was like because it never worked.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate description
I had to send mine back. The features list a slot for a flash memory card, but this DVD player does not have one. Lots of other sites mention the SD slot so maybe a previous version had one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tivo is Great, DVD recorder is unreliable
I bought this unit in October 2005 - purchased for the TIVO with DVD burning capability. The Tivo was easy to setup, easy to use.DVD burning worked well for 4 months then,I began to get error messages "saving failed - internal error".Resetting/restarting did not solve the problem.Toshiba tech support was no help. The unit had to be sent in for repair - 2 weeks later I received a "reconditioned" unit. The reconditioned unit worked for 30 days, then began with the same error message. Tech supports only answer "unplug it and then plug it in - if that doesn't solve the problem, you will have to send it in for repair".Toshiba paid the shipping costs for the 2nd return.3 weeks later I received the 3rd unit - reconditioned. On the first day, I got the same error message.Tivo works fine, I am able to record and view programs, but not able to burn DVD's.It seems a shame since I paid extra for this capability. I don't know what Toshiba will do at this point. After 3 failed units, I think it is fairly certain that reliability is poor for the DVD burning option.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good deal, especially if you don't want more than Basic TIVO
I bought this unit a year ago on sale (at a ridiculously low price) and have found it to be just great. It offers everything you might want in a TIVO and DVD player/recorder unit (although it does not HD-record, if that is what you need). It is especially good for those who don't need all the bells and whistles of full TIVO service and who only need the basic TIVO service (which is just fine) WITHOUT A RECURRING MONTHLY CHARGE (that is the great benefit of this unit).
5-0 out of 5 stars Know what you are buying
Think of this equipment as a space saving unit that will replace your Tivo recorder and DVD recorder/player. But that's it. Giving bad ratings because it's not capable of recording HD, having bad basic Tivo programming capabilities, or not outputting recorded materials to digital audio is like criticizing it for not cooking your dinner. Free basic Tivo service comes with the ALL Tivo recorders (this isn't exclusive to Toshiba machines). Tivo has always offered 3 days advance programming without Season pass and other extra features found in paid service. Think of it as a test drive feature that'll suck you into paying for subscription, which, by the way, is worth it. Tivo Series 2 was never meant to record HD. If you have a standard TV, the recording quality at High setting is perfecly fine (both Tivo and recorded DVD). Yes, you can see digital compression artifacts (especially on large screen HDTVs). If you are looking for recording HD look else where--or Get the Toshiba HD DVD, wait for Tivo Series 3, or get satellite service and pay a lot for HD DVR. If you are happy with your standard cable, this machine will make you happier. ... Read more
