Forget thinking outside the box--now you can stop worrying about the box altogether. Coby's DVD-224 is about the size of a hardcover book, so whether you're ferrying the player between the kitchen and the bedroom or hooking it up for periodic use by the kids, the DVD-224's small size permits enjoyment of DVD programs and music CDs in just about any room you want. While not portable in the traditional sense--the unit has no screen and requires AC power--the DVD-224 is much easier to move around, set-up, and use than a traditional component DVD player.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price
Really good audio and video. Don't like the buttons on the unit or the remote. They don't protrude enough. The unit seems made of the cheapest plastic on the market today. It does have advance to the next track buttons on the unit in addition to the remote, which I like. (I'm not a remote person and am mainly using this unit as a CD player)

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Performance
The Sony DVPNS55P/S Single Disc DVD Player is an excellent unit. The picture quality does look slightly better than my other units. However, most impressive is that this unit plays DVDs with dubious looking scratched surfaces and the like flawlessly. I truly was impressed and I purchased one of these units for that reason. The price is very affordable as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Better choice than others, good value for the price ...

    5-0 out of 5 stars OPPO OPDV971H Digital HD-Ready Up-Converting DVD Player
I have mixed feelings about this product.Even though I still rated it with 5 stars simply because you got much more than what you pay for it at $200 from Amazon.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Player...Great for the Price
First of all, I did not buy on Amazon but wished I did. Amazon has it for same price but free shipping. I don't know if other brands would have looked better or worse. It works great, has the Faroudja chip, and is perfect until HD DVD's become more popular and cheaper. I will say that when you call OPPO the company is very eager to answer any questions you may have and I like the fact the company takes so much pride in their products that they are constantly updating them by listening to what owners of them have to say. Everyone complaigned early on the remote had a terrible layout. So, now it comes with a newer remote that has a better layout. What I guess I'm saying is try getting results like that with Samsung or Sony. You can download any future updates OPPO has on your computer, burn to a CD and load into your OPPO player and it's updated. I see HD DVD players are on sale for $369 (the Toshiba HA-1). I didn't go there because of many bad reviews(ex: slow startup time, etc...). It's first generation technology and already Toshiba is coming out with the HA-2 to replace it. Bad reviews for the OPPO are very few. Get this player and you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars SONY over SamDUNG anyday!
I made the mistake of buying the SamDUNG DVD-HD860 with HDMI Up-Conversion.I have never seen a cheaper piece of junk DVD player.I mean...my PlayStation 2 plays DVDs better!
5-0 out of 5 stars the best
Buy this upconverting dvd player, i use it on my lcd tv using HDMI cable, one of the best things is it last unlike the 3 panasonic s-77 that i owned, the optical block that the laser sits on gets stuck for me anywhere from 6 months to as little as 30 days on the panasonic, this is a great player and is probly the simplist to set up properly, buy this until blue ray or HD dvd gets less expensive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific DVD player
I bought this player this past weekend and have been very impressed with it so far. I connected it to my high def tv with an HDMI-DVI cable, since my TV doesn't have and HDMI connection and the picture is simply amazing. The opening battle scene in Star Wars:Revenge of the Sith is jaw dropping in it's clarity, as is the battle on the volcanic planet between Anakina nd Obi Wan. Return of the King looks great in it's battle scenes and the scene where Aragorn goes to get the ghost king to fight for them. The dark scene looks great and a lot of detail that you normally would miss comes through beautifully. The scene in The Incredibles where Dash is being chased by the security guards through the jungle looks amazingly good, considering it has lots of quick changes of terrain from jungle to desert to water and the player handled everything easily. Set up on the player is easy and the remote is very easy to use. All in all, the only flaw I've found is that it does not support SACD or DVD-Audio. This is the only reason I'm not rating it a 5 star product. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars 2 Stars. You can do better...
This is an incredibly mediocre DVD player. Picture quality is fine, but features are lacking. My biggest angry complaint is that if you leave a DVD paused long enough, the thing will simply shut off. Oh, it doesn't tell you that, it likes to pretend it's in "Standby" mode; fact is, it's merely in "OFF" mode with a red LED light on. It will NOT remember where you paused, either; you'll simply have to start over. If you are like me and tend to pause to go to the bathroom or respond to a phone call or such, this is an extremely irksome "feature". Other than that, it just seems to lack certain features. I couldn't get the subtitles on one of my DVDs to work at all, so, uh, go figure.
4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Player - For just a $60 price tag.
I reviewed all of the comments before buying and found them very helpful. The multi-region decoding works perfectly and I have tested it with Region 1 & 2 DVD's.I agree with the remote problems, its a little flakey, but it does fast forward, you need to use the arrows at the top of the remote and double press them to fast forward (and reverse).Picture quality is pretty good.
2-0 out of 5 stars Nice price, good picture, multi-region, but frustrating otherwise
As someone had noted previously, it is possible through the remote to switch this player into multi-region mode, and that's quite nice. The picture is also nice. However, the remote control reception is maddeningly poor; it's very iffy even from 6 feet away.Tried new batteries, a universal remote, still not good. The other problem is that it doesn't remember where you left off on a DVD, or forgets once it goes on standby.Once its on standby, you seem to have to turn it on from the front panel.I'll go back to Sonys, which have fine remotes, which remember the positions of your last six disks.

4-0 out of 5 stars Always plays the first disc
Just received this played last night. So far, so good!
3-0 out of 5 stars Yikes! What have I got myself into
Its pretty much been well reviewed here. Just to reiterate some points and clarify a few others. First off, this player DOES play DVD-R disks, I know, I have done so! Plays just fine if you know how to properly burn a disk, DVD-R can play ;-)
4-0 out of 5 stars One of my best purchases this year...
I'll leave all the ultra-technical reviewing to those folks who possess the knowledge to do it correctly - although I am bright enough to use this unit, if I attempt a "technical review" I'll remove any doubts you may have about me being an idiot.Instead, I'll just describe my experiences and pass along my impressions.I have a large DVD collection - 1200+ and growing daily, so a large capacity player like this is exactly what the doctor ordered.I was amazed of how long it actually took to physically remove 400 DVDs from their case, hand record them on paper by title and sequence # (don't scoff - this ended up being one of the smartest things I did), and then load them into the player.Next, I optimistically pressed the "LOAD" button, hoping all my DVDs would be scanned and have their titles and other info programmed into the player's memory.Approx. 2 hours later the process finished and I hit my first disappointment - of the 400 DVDs, less than 10% yielded data.I contacted SONY's product support line to find out if this was normal, I was given a "techno-jargon" answer that I really didn't understand, but the bottom line (or so I was told) is that the problem is with the production of the disc - some scan and produce data, some don't.That meant "Plan B" - manually inputting the rest of the titles and other info. (see - it was a good idea to have a numerical list of exactly what was where!) IF I would have had a PS2 keyboard, this process would have went much smoother - I didn't, so that meant using the remote, it was easy to do, but very, very time consuming.Of course, an hour after I finished, we had a violent electrical storm, and the entire block lost power for several hours - the longest period of time without electricity in this house since sometime in the 1960's.Go figure, and yes, I was cursing. The good news is when the power came on, I hadn't lost any data at all - the next day I contacted SONY again (just to learn how long the memory will save the data without AC power) and I was told that this model will protect ALL your saved info for 30 DAYS!!That is cool to know.Other than these MINOR inconveniences I have nothing but good things to say about this player - once I got all the info put in, I've been doing nothing other than enjoying it.It produces a terrific picture and great sound - the HDMI connector helps keep things tidier with using just the one cable, while transferring HD quality imagery.I was starting to worry when they began to release all the new technology - the Blue Ray HD discs and player - I mean, I have over 1200 DVDs, that's a lot of investment - do I start collecting the new stuff, get a new Blue Ray player, etc.?This DVP-CX995V takes care of that problem - at least as far as I'm concerned.I'm fortunate to also own a SONY 40" LCD Bravia - model #KDL-V40XBR1 - which is a HDTV - so with this player and that TV, the outcome is a picture so clean and so clear, even if technically it falls a few pixels short of being called "true HD" by the "techno-purists" - I defy anyone to compare it's picture to a picture generated from a HD signal and point out ANY significant differences. So with those 2 units, I also have one of SONY's home theater systems (part of their "Dream Systems"), so I am quite content.I like this player a lot, it works great, it's easy for someone like me to use, and with my collection - it is very nice to scroll through my menu and choose any one of 400 movies with one push of the button.Actually, I like this one so much, I am probably going to invest in more of them - as my collection grows larger, it will be nice to store a lot of these movies.Plus, I should add that I do have an illness that keeps me bed-ridden most of the time, so being able to select all my movies with the remote IS more than just me being lazy - not that it matters, but I guess I just didn't want anybody thinking - "dang - that guy is so lazy he don't even wanna get up to change his movies".Seriously, I am very partial to SONY, but, so far, this has been one purchase that I've been real happy about - I was a little nervous at first, wondering just how well a 400 disc player would work, but it works great. ... Get ready for the next generation of DVD entertainment with the Toshiba HD-A1 DVD player, which is compatible with the new HD DVD format. It combines the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound with the convenience of DVD disc playback. In addition to the new HD DVD format, you'll also enjoy backward compatibility with your current DVD movie CD audio libraries, as well as content burned onto DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R/RW. The HD-A1 also scales standard definition DVD output via the HDMI connection to a resolution of 720p or 1080i to match your HDTV's performance. 5-0 out of 5 stars Took the plunge
AND.........i'M GLAD i DID!There has been a lot of reviews out there and all the negatives and positives hold true, BUT most of the reviews, now that I experienced the HD A1, were more like nitpicking. Here's my take:
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Preeeeetty Preettttty Good!
I've known about this player for a while now.Everyone that was tech savvy was talking about it and had filled me up on all the info.I knew HD would be inevitable, obviously, and said, this will be my next player. (That said my previous player was a first Gen Phillips Magnavox of which still works great). And because of this player I wanted to get an HDTV as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Just make sure you get the latest firmware ver 2.0

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This product could be a lot better.
3-0 out of 5 stars Be Warned:The Remote Requires Accurate Aiming
The remote control might drive you batty. You have to point it directly at whatever it's controlling in order for it to work.Besides the obvious, this means that unless you've memorized the buttons and can feel which is which, you must hold the remote level and then lean forward to read its labels and press its buttons.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unreliable DVD Player
I purchased three Sonly SLV-D370P DVD/VCR Combos. Of the three, two have had to be returned within the first 30 days because of the DVD player. All seems well until the DVD player freezes. Then from that point on it refuses to load any DVD. It attempts to load for several minutes, then an error message appears on the screen stating that the disc cannot be read. Avoid this unit. ...
