5-0 out of 5 stars Great System for the Price
I had just purchased the Samsung HL-S4666W 46" DLP HDTV and I felt I needed a surround sound system to go with it.However, I didn' have thousands to spend, and I needed to get a progressive scan DVD player too. This system answered all my problems at once.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Mini System for the price...
I recently purchased this system for my living room.It performs really well for my needs.Surround sound is great and DVDs look awesome on a Sony XBR970 tv.Two things I don't like.1.)Auto calibration mic was pretty inaccurate determining speaker setup and 2.) cheesy speaker cable out of the box.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice!
I bought this unit along with the Samsung 56" DLP TV.It came very quickly from Amazon (received in 2 days). It is excellent quality, exactly what I was expecting from a Sony.It setup very easy, I am running the HDMI Passthrough for both my HDCable Box and the Samsung HD960 unit as well. The setup of the device was extremely easy, easy to rename inputs and the theater setup wizard is very easy and works very well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome ( Free Shipping from Amazon Didn't Hurt Either!)
Excellent product. It even comes with a calibration microphone that tests and calibrates all the speakers and lets you know if any of them is misplaced/out of range for optimum performance.
4-0 out of 5 stars Problems With Sony
Unit worked well. Remote was defective. Had to ship it at my expense with much paperwork and wait for return. This made receiver virtually useless. Received replacement and, you guessed it, same defect. More time with a useless home theater.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent System for Price.
If you want a budget home theater system for under $200 there is probably not many systems better then the Sony HT-DDW700. This system is ideal for small rooms such as a bed room or a tiny living room.
3-0 out of 5 stars Impossible Menus
Although this system sounds generally good out of the box, the bass is much too strong. Even after the automatic tuning with the included mic, the bass is much too strong. The menus are impossible to figure out (two PHDs tried). They are nonsensical and confusing and often get in a loop that you cannot get out of unless you turn the unit off. In short, good sound, but not sensational. Bass much too strong and even turned way down it is still too strong. And HORRIBLE menu system that defies use. There have to be better systems out there where the menu system is carefully thought out and sensible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice
I purchased this item recently and it's excellent in all aspects. It took me less than a hour to set it up and the super cool auto calibration takes cares of calibrating the speakers without having the pain of doing it manually. The subwoofer delivers a meaty bass and the surround speakers are very impressive. The centre channel could have been powered up a bit more so that it can deliver the movie dialogues in depth, but still it does a good job. Overall, I would say it's an excellent choice when you compare the cost vs performance. ... Read more

excellent sound! speaker sound is awesome! dvd player has a lot of state-of-the-art features! you can never go wrong with this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars great system
This system does everything you would expect from a home theater system, and looks nice to boot. And to correct the poster below, it does play burned dvds. The only problem is it does not include audio connectors to hook up the T.V.'s sound to the receiver, but they can be bought very cheaply.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big Bang for The Buck!!
After months of searching and researching I decided on this system. Looked at the Panasonic's, Kenwoods, Onkio etc and had my mind set on Kenwood or Panasonic till I went to a store that had a good display of various systems. I had a budget of $500 and looked hard at the Panasonic HT 940 system but after two hours of taking the same music cd's and movie dvd back and forth to the displays, I choose the Samsung because of the crisp highs and deep bass, smaller speakers, sleek look, rear wireless ready and the ability to play any format out there. Once home the ability to fine tune each cross-over to get the sound right in my house was awsome and easy to setup. The speakers are small but beat some of my 100 watt JVC audio speakers in the house. My wife was very impress from the sound from the small speakers. I highly suggest Monster Cable for any system you buy. I walked out of the store under $500. The system was $319, the Monster cable $44 and three year total replacement policy was $56. Would highly recommend this system to anyone who doesn't have a fortune to spend on a home theater system. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mine works great- some recommendations for other buyer's issues
Well, I ended up buying mine on closeout from Radio Shack for $149..
4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Money...MINOR drawbacks
I have owned this system since March...the sound is wonderful...definetly a great value for the money...the bass could be just a little stronger and the rear speakers aren't used as much as I thought they would be, but it is the best sound you will find for this kind of money...music sounds great, dvd is fine for the most part, no serious problems but progressive scan does act up from time to time, recycling the power corrects the problem...it will also plays cd's that I burn off my computer which is more than my kizillion dollar sony will do...and unless you are a sound snob, this system will work fine for you...and if you are a sound snob, why are you even considering this one...go for the bose system for 800.00 cause this one can't compare

1-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, horrible DVD
The sound on this system is really fantastic for the price, but I've had the same experience as the other reviewer. The DVD skips constantly, and Phillips is absolutely no help in fixing the problem.Amazon has been great and has offered to give a 50% credit, but Phillips insists that I send (at my own expense) the machine to them and then wait 4+ weeks to have a 'possibly' refurbished unit.I'm quite disappointed with Phillips and its lack of customer service. ... The Denon S-101 is a rock-solid DVD home-theater system that's easy to set up, easy to use, and easy on the eyes. But what really sets it apart from other systems in its class is its ability to bring a very big sound -- and even big pictures -- out of Apple's tiny iPod.Read more

This unit failed not only mechanically but the company and its representitives as well. I am sick and tired of retuning this unit {3 times } and getting it back to work for a little while. You would think a respected company would care for its customers and correct things to their satisfaction----DO NOT BUY this unit it only brings TROUBLE

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Amazing !!!!!
The first time I saw this piece was at Wal-mart. I had listened to Sony,Philips, JVC, Panasonic, RCA in that order, the difference was instantly clear. Then I went back to listen to the Philips again and the difference was clear.I recommend that first time buyers should go to a store with several brands on display that they could listen to. I made up my mind that ifI wanted a home theater in a box (HTIB)package it will be the Philips brand. This was about 10 months ago. Each time I stopped by the electronic section of any store I would check it out. Finally, I decided to buy one. Next thing was to read expert reviews and consumer reviews. Most reviews rated it high. However, I was concerned about the hissing sound some consumers had experienced.I still went ahead to buy one at Fred Meyer for $179:00 on sale, if I did not like it, I will return it, I reasoned. I bought the black colored piece. Costco and Radioshack had it on sale for the same price but Fred Meyer is closer to my home.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible DVD player
I have bought and returned three of these units now. Each one has been defective, and finally I just gave up on returning the system. The DVD player constantly gives "Bad Disc" errors and skips if there is even the slightest smudge on a disc. The sound quality is very nice for the price, but since the player doesn't work, it's essentially useless. This is a complete rip-off at any price point.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great System

4-0 out of 5 stars Rear Channels Are Not Exactly Wireless

4-0 out of 5 stars One Sexy Home Theater!
Too bad I can't do 4.5 stars.I picked this up a couple weeks ago and am really happy with it.The speakers are only about 1.5" thick and you can hang them on the wall to complement your 4" thick tv.The controls are a bit strange and the "On" button is different than the "off" button. The wireless is great and it's a piece of cake to put together. The screen is a little difficult to read from more than 6' away being that it's blue on black.Packaging is superb.Just pick up a HDMI cable to run from this to your HDTV and you're all set! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Good system, but only good.
I was very excited by this items specs. Built-n DVD recorder, good power, wireless rear speaker capable. This is one of only a very small number of home theater-in-a-box systems with 2 S-video inputs. All very nice. There are a couple of serious limitations with the system though. One is that the picture through the S-Video inputs is a little soft. Using a regular $300 receiver in it's place my S-Video via satellite is really sharp, but not through the RT50. Two, this unit does not have any optical or coax digital audio inputs so even if you are watching a movie on say HBO or Showtime, you won't be able to hear it in Dolby Digital only regular stereo. Why limit the system in this way? This unit can decode these signals, but Panasonic doesn't allow us to get this signal into the unit, unless you are watching a DVD. Now the final nail in the coffin for me and why I returned this unit after only using it for 2 days is that it can not decode Dolby Pro Logic II. Pro Logic is being broadcast on nearly every channel on every cable and satellite service and why would anyone ever want to buy a home theater system and not be able to hear your favorite programs out of your center channel and surround speakers? What are they there for? If all you ever plan to do is watch DVDs then this is a great little system, but if you watch any amount of regular TV or own a video game system, then buy ANY other manufacturers system to get Pro Logic II decoding. Also, if you buy this unit, do yourself a big favor and buy 16 or 14 gauge speaker wire and use that for the speakers instead of the dental floss Panasonic bundles with the system. It will make a huge improvement. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disfunctional with hdmi, and denon repair is unreachable
Maybe the other reviewers are denon employees. That's the only way I can explain the high ratings, and the absence of complaints about an issue that is reported on many other websites. When using hdmi, the screen will occasionally go black for about three seconds. When you're watching a movie, that's really annoying. And if you hope to have it fixed, better clear a week on your calendar, because denon repair is impossible to reach.

5-0 out of 5 stars The true test of HTIB
I've owned this system since April 2006
5-0 out of 5 stars "Music to my ears"
I wanted something compact but powerful. This fitted the bill perfectly. Debated about Bose 321 series also, but after listing to the sound & comparing inputs, outputs & functions... there was no comparison. The USB connector in the front just ROCKS !!! the reviewer below is right about there being just 1 optical input. Make sure your components have digital coax output. Connected the philips DVP 642 to this system using s-video & digital co-ax & evrything is just perfect. Excellent DVD playback on Denon & Divx playback on my philips. Also, got 24 months interest free from best buy !!! the system was $1399, so thats like $50 a month. Awesome deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprising Missing Feature!
I thought I had researched this unit pretty well before purchasing. The feature set is amazing for the price. In fact, for those of you like me that are using an audio system and/or DVD player more than just a couple of years old, check out what you may have been missing for cool features like: AV Sync (ability to perfectly synchronize audio/video); reading/playing of music from your USB connected MP3 player; rotation of images when viewing photos; quick display of time remaining in movie; easy access to hidden bonus material; dynamic range compression for enhanced late night listening when trying not to disturb others; and more. But here is the surprising, in fact down right incredible missing feature: No tone controls of any kind; no treble; no bass; no eq other than presets which only work in stereo mode and are just a guessing game since there is no indication anywhere, not even in the manual, as to what frequency adjustment curve is being applied. For TV or DVD surround sound viewing, forget it...you just can not boost the tweeters no matter how badly you may want to do so! It never even occurred to me to check for such a basic feature in an audio receiver! ... Read more

This is just a small forwarning for anyone thinking of buying this.Take note that the unit only has one audio input. Now this may be fine if you happen to actually own a TV with a main audio out option (I for one own 3 televisions, one of which is only a month old, none of which have this).Basically what this means is that if you have several items hooked to your TV (PS2, Xbox, Xbox360, VCR, Satelite or Cable box etc etc) you will need to hook and unhook each item as needed to have them in surround sound.
5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SYSTEM FOR THE MONEY I EVER HAD.
READ A FEW REVIEWS THE OTHER DAY ON THIS UNIT. SO I WENT OUT TODAY AND PICKED ONE UP AT WALL MART FOR $249.00. Comes with 2 speaker stands. Stands are to be used for the front but i fitted them to the back and wall mounted the fronts. When i powered it up i was blown away by the sound quality and clarity. I never heard my music sound so good and never heard all those extra instruments in the background. What a super deal this was. It does everything it is designed to do. Looks great. No cons. And when i put a dvd movie in==WOW i thought i was in the theatre. I recommend this highly. Plenty of power and base. Plenty of everything. It does what its designed to do blow you away. Get one you wont be sorry.

I have last years' model (SC-HT820V, slightly less power, otherwise the same.)There are only about 4 or 5 companies on the planet that could attempt a system like this - RCA, Sony, Toshiba, JVC, or Panasonic.VHS player / recorder in this system is actually of mid to high-end quality. Here are some minor annoyances - - -

I bought the version of this system that did not include the VCR in May, 2005, at a Radio Shack, not through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOTICE!!
I have had this system for almost a year now. Every thing on it works great. There are a few exceptions like holding the FF and RW to actually rewind and fast forward. Also, to those looking for TRUE wireless please think. Do you want your speakers to be running on batteries? It has to have a terminal to connect to the back speakers. I am having to send the system in because the fan is busted due to a power surge. A minnor hasle, over all it produces great sound and great picture quality. Great for beginners and expert users for an affordable price

2-0 out of 5 stars do your homework before buying
i purchased this in december of '05 after reading reviews on amazon.it had 2 good reviews at the time.no more than 3 days after buying it i saw the first negative review.i am here to add mine.this worked great for the first month we had it and then decided to start malfunctioning after the return period expired(of course).first off, the instructions aren't worth the paper they are printed on and the "center channel dialogue speaker" is not worth the plastic it is encased in.the subwoofer has a hum that won't go away no matter what cables we use or where it's located.the center channel produces a tinny sounding echo in every mode the unit is in when watching tv or movies.the wireless rear speakers are not wireless, they need to be connected to a rear receiver which almost never comes on with the main unit like it is supposed to.the fm reception is still poor after trying several locations for the antenna both in and out of the house.the remote does work with my toshiba tv, but not for all functions.the dvd player seems to be ok so far and the speakers sound ok when playing music.i made a $350 dollar mistake when buying this setup, please do not make the same mistake.look elsewhere and spend a few more bucks to get a setup from a reliable and trustworthy brand name.i wish i had.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great system that is well worth the cost!
I had done some research and pricing on home theater systems and discovered that there is a nearly endless range of possibilities depending on cost, features, power output, etc.I found that there were almost too many choices.I was looking for a basic, inexpensive system that I could use mostly for watching DVDs (as opposed to listening to music CDs).

2-0 out of 5 stars big pain
I am not the world's smartest NOR dumbest when it comes to electronics but for the life of me, I cannot figure out why when I point the remote directly at the system and push PLAY, the system instead increases the sound... or when I push VOLUMN UP, the system begins to fast forward the DVD. I am pretty sure I have a freaked out lemon here since it even occasionally occurs when pushing the buttons on the unit itself. When I do get the remote "working" the way it should, I have not been able to get the sound to be anywhere close to what it should be. The rear speakers are exceptionally low and cannot be adjusted, so unless you want the entire system up full blast, the surround sound from behind is pointless (I know it shouldnt be as loud as the front, but again, I'm talking almost non-existant). I suppose in this day, Coby can use the excuse that it's only $100 but for me, I don't have spare $100 lying all over the place. For now, I am out the money and out the system and will have to be satisfied with the sound coming out of my tv. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DAV FC9, caveat emptor
I had my "dream" system for less than two years when it seized up, flashing "Stand By" and it would not reset.I called Sony and went to a local/approved technician who still had to ship it back to the manufacturing plant.I have been without a DVD/CD system for 4 weeks now and do not have a commitment to get it back. The latest estimate is $300 to fix it, not covered by warranty.I should've stuck with RCA, my previous system was 15 years old and still functioning.Sony's dream is my nightmare.Do not buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sony DAV-FC9
Yeah.. this thing stinks. I paid alot of money for it, and its doing exactly what Mike B says too. Thing freeze up all the time, and now when you try to turn it off, it blinks standby indefinately. I even went to bed, and woke up 8 hours later, and it still blinks. You have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it on. (JUNK!) Everytime I buy something from sony, I get burned. This is the 5th item now from Sony, that has failed on me before or in this case just after the warrany expired (UGH). Anyway, buy cheap stuff from walmart. Atleast when it breaks you only paid $50 for it.,, not $1500. ... Read more
