Lasted TWO whole weeks
I bought this drive because of its capacity, and because it's one of the few large drives that can operate successfully in my PVR (ReplayTV 5040).After installing the PVR software I installed the drive.The machine booted and successfully downloaded my local program details.I then programmed the PVR to record junk programs just to fill the drive, approximately 160 hours at the best video quality picture, which it did with no problem.Considering the installation successful, I then erased all programs and scheduled recordings of programs that I wanted to view.Two weeks later I turned my PVR on to find it in a constant reboot cycle.Unplugging, manually rebooting, the two techniques that normally solve this problem, produced no change.I then disassembled the PVR to remove the drive so I could run Seagate diagnostics.The drive was so hot that I could not touch it without using a towel, and had a "burned electronics" odor.Once it cooled, I connected the drive to my computer to run diagnostics.The Seagate program recognized the drive by model number but could not test anything, and said the drive was defective, and to check warranty status, which lasts until 2010.Seagate now has the drive and is in the process of shipping a replacement.I have since installed a 320GB Hitachi in my PVR and it is performing flawlessly.For reference the PVR is installed in a cool well ventilated location so I do not believe anything external precipitated the drive failure.While lost recorded TV programs is of no major consequence, I don't believe I would trust this drive for critical use in a PC, or as a data backup device.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.8
I bought this drive for backup purposes. It lasted about 6 months with about 1% uptime. (that's it!). And now it's a brick. The red lights flash on and off when I try to boot it up. I will not buy this brand again.
Eight months and expecting a third
I bought this drive with hesitation after reading the reviews here in January 2006. In fact, I had decided NOT to buy this drive, but scouring the web, I could find no 400GB drive that consistently had any better reviews. So I went with the Seagate.

Sony does not honor rebates
I bought this and sent in the rebate with the required paperwork and the UPC symbol from the box. Sony sent me back a letter saying that since I hadn't included the UPC label, that they could not honor my rebate. Fortunately, I'd scanned it before mailing, so I resent it to them.

Small Drive - Big Value
I love this little guy!I have had it in my bag for 8 months now, and it has 'saved the day' more than once.I am a consultant and am on the road 100% of the time, so I was looking for something light, compact and durable.

Take your drive for a...drive?
I must admit, our office has only had 2 of these drives for roughly 1.5-2 months, and they have worked well in a rotating backup system. I am sold on this drive's durability due to the following experience:

I ordered this drive refurbished from Western Digital and got a good deal on it. I've had it for about 2 months and haven't had any issues.
Beware of WD External HDs if You Value Your Data!!!
My 250GB Western Digital hard drive died after only a month & took with it over 150GB worth of data that wasn't backed up anywhere else (for obvious reasons - who really "backs up" their backup drive anyway?). At first the drive worked very well: it supported plug-and-play, had a large amount of space, was competitively priced and was made by WD, a brand I thought to be trustworthy.

Nice drives - I bought 2 of them
I have TWO of these babies in my computer (cost about $125 each), and they run like a charm. What I really love with Maxtor has nothing to do with the drives themselves. I love the software Maxtor gives free of charge that will make a carbon copy of an entire drive. Backing your system up, or upgrading from an old drive, is EZ as 1, 2, 3! No complaints. Money well-spent. Whether it's reliable or not, is too early to tell, and on that issue I must defer to more experienced consumers... and for the record? The number of other manufacturers besides Maxtor putting a 16 mb cache on their 250 gb drives is : ZERO. The standard at this time is 8 mb. Whether it really and truly makes a diff, I can't say, but at least Maxtor has a better spec.

Personally I own 3 Maxtor Drives. 1 is not 8 years old and hasn''t failed me yet, however it did replace a previous that went bad sector nuts in less than a month so there is always the chance. Maxtor's ata133 drives rock

WORKS VERY NICELY
I had to write this review to mention that my experience is totally different than Michael George's experience below.I have mine plugged into a power strip - and it works fine.It connects to the desktop through the front side USB and it works fine.Also connected it to the laptop, and it worked great.Note that I didn't use the IOMEGA CD at all since I have my own backup programs which I like (i.e Retrospect and True Image).It connected beautifully with into my XP computers with no issues whatsoever.
Does the job, but lousy documentation and support
I had done a fair amount of research, and this wasn't the HD I intended to buy. Due to a crisis I had to get a drive immediately and this was half price ($60) so even though I had read the reviews I went for it.For my purposes it works. I have an ibook and I needed more disc space in a hurry and backup.I definitely agree with the reviews on the lousy instructions and the support.I haven't seen such bad documentation in a long time.They hide the fact that the CD is useless and unnecessary for MACs deep in their support site.I backed up my system on CD's (many, many) because I am worried about this thing. FYI: My original choice was the Hitatchi 250GB at $170 which comes with a 3 year warranty.
Great
This is my first external hard drive owned. I bought it, installed it into my computer and instantly had 160 gigs extra space. I have it installed through a USB hub and it works fine. I also have it plugged into a powerstrip and it works fine. My laptop was purchased May of 2003 and i have no software/hardware conflicts. Only thing I'm unsure of, because its my first one, if you leave the drive on for about 15 minutes it begins to get really warm. I havnt installed the software, i really dont care for it.
