RCA=Junk
Please do yourself a favor and steer clear of the RCA DirecTV receivers. Mine began giving me TONS of problems after just 5 months of use. Without warning during TV viewing it kept resetting "searching for signal" about 5-6X a night, then you have to sit & wait the 3-4 min. as it downloads the program guide. How frustrating!!! I tried to get repair service help from RCA's 800# but it was completely automated, no live people to help you and I was then referred to a long distance # for help. Give me a break RCA!! I have to pay for a phone call to get you to fix your defective product? Buyer beware!!! I'd recommend any alternative brand for your DirecTV system, there are other brands out there, but if you must get RCA make sure you invest in a protection/extended warranty because you'll need it.

Nice Price, Does a Decent Job
I have owned both RCA and Sony Direct TV receivers for several years. I understand Sony either no longer makes them, or no longer makes the Ultimate TV Direct TV receiver. The one advantage of the Sony is that their menuing system is very intuitive. The RCA on the other hand, requires manual searching to figure out the commands=not intuitive. Does a lot of cool things though. I am a firm believer in Direct TV as being the best method of viewing. Highest resolution for the best price. Additionally, except in all but the heaviest rains, the reliability is superb. I was a cable subscriber for years, and would have blackouts that lasted for 3 days at times. My friend signed up with cable and went through 6 digital receivers in 6 weeks. (I know that is probably the exception) I find a lot of cable subscribers very happy with their service. NOT BAD!!! But could be better!
This reciver is not that bad it works very well, Clear picture. Its pretty fast but no athlon 3000+ (lol) the 2 min download and seaching for sat comes on without notice at times right when your wacthing a movie! :( other from that this reciver is GOLD! useful features for the tv loving junky! Directv Receiver
The product is very nice. The only problem I had was it didn't come with an access card. I could have purchased a new unit for the price I paid for the unit and the new card.

excellent value
It took a little getting used to but overall I'm impressed with the performance and features of this unit.The remote didn't work with my Sansui TV/VCR combo unit but that was expected.Easy directions and helpful guides make this unit easy to get used to.

Average at best..
I wanted a Philips brand receiver because my TV, VCR, and DVD are all made by Philips. It is conveinent to have the remote work automatically without having to program it and I have always liked their products. BUT, I do not like this receiver. For those who do not know, there is a big difference between the different brands of DirecTv receivers. Read more

You ever buy something and you immed. know thatya made a mistake....
Purchased for bedroom.I purchased this unit sight unseen from ecost as I needed an inexpensive HD unit ASAP.The only thing this unit had going for it was price $200 (refurb).It has an obnoxiously loud, non stop fan.It never stops.
WHAT'S WITH THE COOLING FAN??
This unit is unusable in a bedroom because of an unbelievably loud cooling fan. The fan never shuts off, even when the machine is turned off; you have to unplug it to silence it! I'm of the opinion that Home Theater components should be silent, but this has a fan as loud as the fan on my desktop PC.Really poor, arrogant engineering.

Direct TV plus is horrible - not just this box
I got the new direct tv plus when my old samsung (with the black controller) broke after I dropped it.This was the replacement, I finally called up saying i couldn't take it any more, it would randomly not record shows, randomly record half a show, not find shows in the listing, etc etc etc.After I escalated to advanced tech, they admitted there are software issues and sent me a new box with the old splash (he said all the boxes are essentially same with different faceplate).So be wary of the direct tv plus, it might not necessarilyi be the hardware. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOO much happier now I got rid of it.

can directv get any better?
What a receiver. I have two dvr's one hd dvr other philips and I have this rca receiver. My wife wanted me to trade it in for a directv d10 receiver. I refused. Once I upgraded toan hd dvr I put my regular dvr in my room and put my rca receiver in my boy's room. I even purchased a second one for my girl's room. My kids have directv,I have directv,we are happy. Thank goodness for rca and directv.

TOSHIBA DST-3000
I was an early adopter of a Toshiba 40H80 Theater Wide HDTV and the DST-3000 back in late 2001. I have always been a fan of Toshibas products and to me they are top notch and for the most part have lived up to and exceeded thier expectations. The toshiba has an ATSC/HDTV tuner that recieves all 18 ATSC table 3 terresterial formats, an NTSC 181 channel vhf/uhf/cable tuner, and a direct tv/hd tuner and decoder. It can capture channels from a roof top or attic mounted antenna as well for local channels in analog or digital. The on screen menu guide is one of the fastest and easiest Ive ever used and it can automatically combine satelitte and non-satelitte channels, aloowing you to add or delete and auto scan for any available channels.
Works well with Hitachi HDTV
I've used this unit for over a three years.I have both component video and composite video set up to my Hitachi 36" HDTV (non-widescreen.)It was simple to setup for the 4:3 aspect ratio with either a choice of black or grey bars when viewing 16:9 programming (I prefer black and have had no burn-in problems.) not happy
after about 6 months my toshiba dst-300 lost the video input ,I could hear the sound but the screen was black. technical support was not much help either. I had to spend an extra $150.00 to have it fixed.my old hughes receivers are 5 years old and I never had any problems with them. ... Read more

"My review also extends to Dish Networks service...I just have one question...why do the new customers always get the better deals and the current cusotmers get shafted with upgrades, specials, rates...everything, so they think that once we are customers we're in their web and they don't need to keep us happy...I am sure Direct TV would be more than happy to satisfy any and all Dish Network customers that feel the same way! dishnetwork customer 5 years ... i bought a 921 receiver for 545 $ sept2005.............. i have had to RETURNit 4 times sincethen ............ ALLthe stantard def programs i recorded were wiped off the hard drive plus ALL the high def programs i recorded ...........nba fans that means kobe s 81 point game , the all star game ..which was in high def this feb 2006 for the 1st time .....i was never told i could have got a full refund within the1st30 days of buying the 921 ... each time hard drive broke , customer service just said we will ups you another 921 ...upgrade to 622 ? forget it .im going to switch to direct tv !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... Nothing But Problems
I've now had two different R15 receivers. The first one would ignore the remote, require nearly daily hard drive formats, finally wouldn't record.. along with freezing during watching television, Guide freezing, etc.
Worse than useless
Just my amen to the universal dismay.
DirecTV dropped the ball
I agree with the consensus. I had nothing but problems with the R15 and aside from offering to replace it, customer service doesn't seem to have any other options. I saw one R10 (the old model with Tivo) at WalMart and dropped $100 to buy it and it works like a dream. I hope DirecTV and Tivo have resolved their differences in 3 years or so when I will need a new DVR or I may be switching to Dish Network. I've heard good things about their DVRs. ... Read more

Hughes SD-HBH
I got two of these receivers when I switced from cable to DirecTV Dec 3, 2004. So far I have not had any problems with either and now at 13 months later we are planning on expanding our system so I want to get two more along with a 2nd Tivo receiver.
