4-0 out of 5 stars needs more detail
You will need to buy Map-source maps ($100+) to make this thing worth the purchase. I needed GPS for boating but the base maps are rudimentary, ie; no inlets, rivers, shoreline detail or lakes. It is although very accurate and easy to use, nice big screen and good reception. If you need GPS now this unit is an excellent value. I payed $199 a month ago and now its $169 but that's my problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great product
My husband and father both have this unit. It's really handy to have on road trips and to use while Geocaching. From our experience, it does take a while to download map information onto the unit, and a color screen would be nice, but for $200, I think it's a good value.

4-0 out of 5 stars GPSMAP 76 great value
With the rest of the GPS devices shifting to color, the large b&w screen on this unit means money well spent. It's fast enough for practically any use. I've been using it in South East La. post-Katrina, Where those piney back woods were often blocked by debris. In New Orleans I used it to avoid blocked roads and to mark entry points into closed areas. I live hear, and the suroundings were so disturbed and displaced that even my own home-town was very disorienting. The backtrackand routemaking features arelifesavers. The screen is easy to read. The low draining B&W screen also allows longer battery life compared with other color units I've used. Looking for a dashboard mount and auto power adapter right now. A photojournalist, I keep it in my camera bag. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A multi-functional GPS wonder, But....
A multi-functional GPS wonder, But... be sure and have a hefty stack of money if you want all the maps, bells and whistles that make this unit so remarkable.Lets start with the main reason I purchased the 276c, for my boat. The Blue Chart marine maps combined with the flexability of the unit makes even complex marine navigation a snap. The large screen allows me to see my position on the water at a glance. Even in areas that are wrought with hazards and multiple channel markers the screen shows everything I need to know to safely navigate at any sunlight angle. When I moved it to my car, I enjoyed the same features that made it great on the water. The turn by turn routing (with voice) and the big screen worked flawlessly. Using it for land nav was also enjoyable except for the size of the unit making it a bit cumbersome.Regarding other peoples complaints about Garmins tight hold on its pricey mapping products, Well they are in business to make money, they have great map products, and you usually get what you pay for. Overall I am very pleased with this product, with the only real downside being the high cost of obtaining all the additional "proprietary" goodies you need to flesh the system out for multiple usage. Again you get what you pay for and for the price I would say that this is one of the finer GPS units on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin 276C - excellent !
I am very pleased. I use the unit on a motorcycle and it has met my expectations so far. Easy to use menus. Easy to see screen. Very satisfied. Only complaint is maps are too expensive. $ 75 for a CD ?

2-0 out of 5 stars Playing by Garmin's Rules
If you purchase a Garmin product, especially this one, you are firmly in the clutches of a Company that gives you what they want you to have, not what you might want. Everything Garmin makes is proprietary so that nothing else will work on a Garmin. You will be unable to transfer data to Garmin media, you will be insulted by a website either written by or for aliens and should you call the customer service or cartography lines assuming you wish to wait and wait, you will get to talk to people so uninformed about Garmin products your wait was wasted. The dingus works ok with Garmin chips, but the chips are inadequate or incomplete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Piranha Max 20 review
With a limited budget, I shopped this one carefully, and the MAX 20 is the most bang-for-the buck I could find. The swivel base alone is worth the upgrade over the 10 or 15 models, and the better resolution only adds to an already great unit.Mounting directions were clear, and installation was done with common hand tools. The simulation setting allows you to see how it will work on the water.Never knew I what I was missing until I added a fishfinder to the old Lund.Highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for PDA or PC connection
The GPS 76 is the perfect portable GPS unit for connecting to a PocketPC based PDA or a laptop.I have tested it on an iPAQ 3835 with Pocket Streets 2002 and it works like a champ.I have also tested it with a friend's PDA using Anywhere Map (a moving map/EFIS type program for flying) and it worked great. If you are in an area that can get WAAS reception, the accuracy is even better. If you are looking for a great GPS that can be used stand-alone or attached to a PDA, this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellentGPS
I have tried a Etrex Vista, Sportmap, and a Gekko but I bought a Garmin 72. I like the 72 for use on my kayak where I can usethe large screen to see my speed three feet away. This unit has beenputthrough the ringer and it just keeps working. I don't miss the mapping at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Garmin GPS72
Have used the GPS72 now for 4 months. It has been a pleasure to use.The Garmin operating system is is easy to follow and the prompts make it unnecessary to carry the manual to use all of the features. So far it is waterproof as advertised as it lives in my canoes and while not fully submerged is subject to splash and spray every time it is out.Approximately 66 hours of use to data and am totally happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pinpoint precision
This is a great GPS, probably the best I've ever used. I started with GPS in 1997 with the Garmin GPS 38, and three years later purchased an eTrex. I was satisfied with that, but when I heard about the added features of the 72, I went ahead and bought it to replace the eTrex. It is far more powerful than the eTrex and easier to use. The 72 makes excellent use of its dedicated zoom and menu keys. These alone make this unit quicker and easier to operate than some entry-level units. The display is of higher resolution which makes things like track lines more precise--a real problem on the eTrex, on which the track appeared as a thick black line that didn't show many meanders or fine movements. Many of the software features that the GPS 38 had, but the eTrex didn't, are included here, such as the ability to measure distance between waypoints, pan on the map page, and time-stamp marked points. The receiver in the 72 is very hot and sometimes gets you a fix within seconds. The software is apparently upgradeable and the receiver is WAAS-enabled, so it's ready for the next generation of navigation. Like most GPS units it's completely waterproof and it's worked for me under very unfavorable conditions. The third GPS I've owned and probably the last one I'll ever need to buy. Another job well done by Garmin. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars INTERMITTANT LOSS OF DISPLAY
I purchased a Garmin 172C GPS through the mail on July 6, 2004.I am quite familiar with the reduction in visibility during sunny days for GPS systems, particularly if the sun shines directly on the display.Using my hand to shade the display under these conditions helps. However, one sunny day this past Fall, while navigating back to our boat launch facility in the Chesapeake Bay, the GPS display faded out completely!Nothing was visible! While the sun was bright that day, the GPS seemed to be unusually warm to the touch. At that point, I felt this condition was more than a simple reduction in visibility from the sunlight. I stopped the boat, turned it
