Editorial Review

There's no rule that stereo systems have to be big and bulky, as this trendy microsystem from Philips aptly proves. The wall-mountable MC235 is a mere 3.78 inches thick--bigger than a credit card but far smaller than the average CD player and speaker combo. Yet the system still packs dynamic audio performance inside its narrow body, with such features as digital sound control and digital dynamic bass boost (DDBB). The former invites the user to choose between different sound settings, including optimal, jazz, rock, techno, and classic, and then automatically adjusts the sound balance and frequencies to create the most favorable setup for the chosen music style. DDBB, on the other hand, enhances the bass at low, mid, and high volumes to deliver rich, deep sounds, an important consideration for a small system such as this.Read more

Features

  • Thin-profile CD stereo microsystem with stand; 9.84 x 9.64 x 3.78 inches (W x H x D)
  • Digital sound control offers optimal, jazz, rock, techno, pop, and classic settings
  • Digital dynamic bass boost enhances bass at low, mid, and high volumes
  • Includes AM/FM tuner; compatible with CD-RW format
  • 10-watt speaker system (5 watts x 2); wall mountable

5-0 out of 5 stars Just love it
It sounds good and looks nice too. I love the way the cd player opened straight up. Its just really cool !

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good buy
Like it. not great on the low end of sound, but definitely a good buy for the $$$$.

4-0 out of 5 stars Attractive and inexpensive product
This small stereo system is exactly what it claims--a good small system at a good price.Sound is solid, and although bass and treble adjustments are limited to several factory preset mixes, one of the presets seems to work well for everything from talk radio, to jazz, to classical, or rock.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible value
I bought this boombox for a construction project where I didn't want to risk damage to a "good" stereo system. But this little Sony box sounded so great, when the construction was over I replaced my "good" system with this one and have had it for over a year with zero problems.I just can't believe what great sound comes from these simple speaker elements. It's amazing.Long live Sony engineers!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I was looking for a small, no-frills radio/CD player and settled on the Sony CFD-S350 for its size, cost, and my opinion that it was one of the least ugly players at the stores I shopped.I've had it for six months and have been quite disappointed. The first thing I noticed was that the FM sensitivity was poor.My 21 year old Sanyo dual cassette player has a much better radio.Programming the presets was easy.
1-0 out of 5 stars liked it, until the cd player stopped working
Only had it for 6 months and already it won't play my cd's, so now it's basically a very overpriced fm radio, with relatively poor reception on many stations.Very annoying.I expect more from Sony. This is the only Sony boombox I have tried.I have a Philips at home, which I've had about 8 years and still works like a charm. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Defective Remote
I purchased the RCA RCD152 for my 94 year old Father for Christmas and the remote was dead out of the box. After returning the unit the remote worked for three months and died. So now what do I do for a remote? I would not recommend this unit unless you don't care if the remote fails.
3-0 out of 5 stars Returned twice
Ordered two of these at different times and on both of them the remote died within a week. Really wasn't that impressed with the sound quality either and had to use the antenna to get good reception. Decided to try a different brand and went with the Panasonic RX-D27. The sound is incredible and the remote so far works great. Also, I do not even have too raise the antenna at all. This boombox is only about $15.00 more than the RCA and well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars great all-in-1 palyer
We found it was tough anymore to locate a player that had cassette, DC and radio in one unit for a reasonable price. The RCA has all of those at a great price. We bought it as a gift for our son and he loves it. Good sound and nice looks for a low price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT PLAYER !
Great CD player !The carousel type is much better than the magazine type.Very reasonable price too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Product
Great product, The JVC is better then a Sony. It is somewhat bulky like one review says, but its only one inch thicker then compatible 5 disc CD players. The depth on it is a standard depth, compared to others; some units are actually 1 to 2 inches longer in depth. Most importantly, easy to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Happy Buyer
I selected this item after looking on the internet and in electronics stores. It was necessary to replace a broken unit, an off brand, which I only owned a year. That one had replaced a Pioneer unit that only lasted about two years.I have owned JVC electronics many times in the past, and decided to try again.I have had this unit nearly two months and have had no problem with it.I use it nearly every evening, operating it on random play.It works great and I believe it is the best one I have ever had.I don't believe anyone could go wrong with this unit---highly recommended. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK,but....
It's ok for making exact copies ,but not for making your own mix.I bought one because my old PHILLIPS recorder, well it's old.Sony will burn at 4x and CD TEXT if it's on the CD.However, if your making a Road Mix or a Fav mix it will only burn at 1x and will not include CD Text;nor can you manually place CD Text while recording which I could do with Ol' Phillip. Ol' Phillip would included CD text and burn @ 2X 1 song at at time.If the CD wasn't text, you could do it manually while you were burning.I really expected alot more from a SONY. Oh, I almost forgot It will not Text'TRACK ARTIST' only the name of the disc and the name of the song!I wish I knew that before I bought it, I'd would have gotten something else!

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Great - After Learning
I purchased the recorder in August of 2006.I also purchased from Sam's some Verbatim CD-R Music/Data CDs.The recorder recognized the CD-Rs with no problem. These CDs can be used for both data and for recording music.I recorded over 100 LPs using these CDs.I had problems with error messages and sometimes I had to use 3 or 4 CDs is make a successful copy of an LP.The error messages came up when the machine warmed up - after making 2 CD recordings. The error messages were either C14/TOC Error (not able to read the table of contents when the recording process is finished or not able to Finalize. Also, received a C13 Error - not successful because of Vibration or a dirty disc -- the error message was not true because there was no vibration or dirty disk. I changed over to Maxell CD-R Music CDs.I have recorded over 15 of these CDs with no problems -no error messages. Some people experienceing problems with error messages may have a compability problem with the CDs they are using.I recommend trying different CDs.When the recorder is working the way it should, it is a great machine with great results.I have noticed that if one does not have the proper type input signal set on the machine (digital or analog) or the proper CD-R in the machine, the recorder will not recognize the input signal. The instructions with the machine could be better. The recorded music is as good or better than the LP.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not looking good.
I had read all of the Pro and Con reviews. But, since most of the negative reviews were a bit dated, I thought I would be reasonably safe now and decided to purchase the RCD-W500C, with some trepidation.Oops.Started it up yesterday and, essentially, the unit will not record.Period!

5-0 out of 5 stars great cd player
I started with the Sony 51 disc player which also has a radio and cassette player. It still works after 8 years of continuous play. My cd collection has grown to about 1200 discs. There are probably 400 of them that I really enjoy. So this player and the shuffle mode fit the bill. 200 bucks was a nice price and I do not care about which album or song plays in what order. I do not plan to change the discs any time soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD Changer
I have three Sony CD changers all of which work very well. This newer model allows a very large number of user categories to which CDs can be assigned.Has a digital fiber optic output.

5-0 out of 5 stars One is not enough
I've never had any problems with this model scratching discs. Some of the fuctions don't operate the way you wish they would, but these are minor setbacks.

AFTER MY TECHNICS CD PLAYER OF 16 TEARS FINALLY BIT THE DUST I LOOKED AROUND FOR ONE TO REPLACE IT. IT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ONE LOCALLY SO I BOUGHT A DVD PLAYER FROM COMP USA. GOT IT HOME AND IT WOULDN'T RECOGNIZE A DISC SO BACK IT WENT. THE TEAC WAS THE ONLY ONE I COULD FIND AT A REASONABLE PRICE SO I BOUGHT IT ONLINE FROM JR ELECTRONICS. I DON'T DO MUCH ONLINE SHOPPING BUT SO FAR THIS EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN GREAT. THE UNIT WAS DELIVERED IN TWO DAYS AND SO FAR IT HAS PERFORMED VERY WELL. IF I GET 1/2 THE MILEAGE FROM THIS ONE AS I GOT FROM MY TECHNICS I'LL BE THRILLED. ONLY TIME WILL TELL. I HOPE I DON'T HAVE TO COME BACK HERE AND WRITE A NEGATIVE REVIEW. SO FAR THE CDP1250 IS WELL WORTH THE PRICE

2-0 out of 5 stars A Frustrating Experience
I bought this unit about 8 months ago and it seemed to work fine. Then it started getting finicky with MP3 discs, refusing to play discs with very large (over one hour) MP3 files. As I listen to a lot of classical music, opera, audio books, and vintage radio on MP3, I have a lot of discs with large files. Then it started occasional skipping and refusing to recognize commercial CDs.And just this morning, it stopped recognizing any CD.Onkyo's website will no longer even recognize my login information (I registered the unit for warranty purposes). I decided to pack this up for the thrift shop, and buy a Denon.

1-0 out of 5 stars so sorry I bought this !
I supposedly upgraded my system 4 months ago ~ I enjoy having a disc changer so I can shuffle my music ~ I had an old 5-disc Panasonic which worked for years like a faithful friend ~ I was so excited to get a 6-disc changer and gave away my old one ~ but, now, I fight with this Onkyo to get it to play random continously ~ sometimes it will, sometimes it will not ~ I clear it over & over, clean the CD's, however, this player seems to have a mind of it's own ~ PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS if you like to shuffle your music & who doesn't !

4-0 out of 5 stars henry
I gave this one 4 stars only because there are better cd players out there like everything else it also comes with a price tag!and i would rather put my money into great speakers. The advise i have gotten from some pros."is to put my money into great speakers, after all that is what your going to hear and spend alittle less on the rest"... 30/70 or 40/60 the speakers being the higher of the two.My budget was $800.00 and spent $500.00 for my speakers, the pros where right great sound system.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why is HK still making this unit?!?
I bought this unit about two years ago, and I've finally had it.Aside from the very rare lockup when in random mode, it worked well for about a year. After that, it would periodically pull the same trick, with growing frequency - play a few tracks in full random mode, then just forget what to do - devolving into a series of useless clicks and refuse to do anything at all until shut down for a few minutes then restarted.I was convinced that my laser had gotten out of alignment somehow, and had just about resigned myself to spending the 80-100 dollars to getting it fixed, when I decided to jump on here and check to see if others have had similar problems.I'm glad I did.I just ordered a Sony unit through Amazon for not all that much more than I would have spent "repairing" my HK unit.
1-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes works; often doesn't
Often doesn't read disk. In "Random" mode, often stops after a few songs. Sometimes will play for a while, then stop reading disk. Even when it plays, it often continues to make the "chirping" noise it makes while attempting to read disk prior to playing.
1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I read these reviews before I bought this piece of garbage!
Since the early 80's, I've drooled at the sight of Harmon Kardon's products, wishing I had thousands to blow on their super high-end gear. Then I see I can buy their CD changer for under $200! It can't be bad because it's an HK, right? WRONG!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Would have gotten a higher rating if it worked at all
I would imagine it was the cheap, crummy power supply, but mine wouldn't even light up...dead...One wonders why a $200 component can't run on 110 volts?I'd try it again if they re-worked the power supply, but not if I have to use a DC adapter like a $3 item.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good looks, good sound, easy to install
My wife and I had been looking for over a year for a simple sound system to install in our new dining room/library on a very narrow (8 inches deep) built-in shelf. None of the micro systems were small enough and most looked like they'd be at home in a sci-fi horror flick. Not only is this unit attractive but it's not much deeper than a CD. The controls are easy to use and with the remote we can control the unit from the dining table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I received the Tivoli Model CD Player as a Christmas gift to add to my Tivoli Satellite (Sirius) radio.I also own the extra Tivoli speaker which makes the system truly stereo. The CD player attached easily and was working in a matter of minutes.Overall, the controls are simple and easy to use.I especially like using the remote control since it's convenient and easy to read. The sound from this system is amazing. The clarity, depth and richness of sound from this little system is worth every penny. And, it's beautiful to look at.I have the system in my office and often receive compliments on its appearance. If you're looking for a compact, attractive, easy to assemble and use system, the Tivoli is perfect for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect solution for home cd recording
I did a lot of research on cd recording devices and read customer reviews all over the internet. It all boiled down to the Denon CDR W1500.It seemed too pricey direct from the "qualified" Denon dealers, and no discounts from them.I found one on-line that included the warranty and a good discount - so I finally got one in my hands. For the past month I've been transferring my old vinyl LPs to cd, either in whole or a track here and a track there.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST RECORDER ON THE MARKET...
I HAVE OWNED THIS RECORDER FOR MANY YEARS AND IT IS THE BEST

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
This originally struck my eye as a nostalgist piece of electronic furniture. From its retro-era looking speaker covers right down to its mind blowing performance, this stereo is perfect for any any room.
2-0 out of 5 stars Annoying hum
Looked good, sounded good. Then I noticed the low-volume hum (60 Hz?) coming from the bass ports on the back. The lower you turn the volume, the louder the hum, though it was always very subtle. The more I tried to ignore it, the more annoying it became.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Clock radio
Great sound and rectption. clock LED is a little bright and a red led would be better, otherwise it is a 5 star radio ... Read more
