5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
This CB radio has an outstanding performance, but beware of the low volume on the internal speaker, just as an advice you should also buy an extension speaker, there are a lot of low priced Midland extensions on amazon

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little radio for the price...
this cb radio is a great buy...I installed mine in my semi..and it works great...the radio is the same as the cobra 19..so i asssume whoever makes the midland also makes cobra radios..It has excellent reception...and i like the added feature of the noise suppressor..I am in truck stops and no where, have i found that you can purchase this radio for $26...Now all my friends want to buy this radio, while its on sale...I received it in about a week from amazon...it is replacing my cobra radio which i had for about 15 years... hey i say buy, buy, buy...You won't regret it....

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding radio
I have been into CB radios since they first came out. I also have 50 year experience as a ham radio operator and an electrical engineer. I have never had a better CB radio. I purchased a second one just to have in years to come as a spare. I use it every day-it has very low crosstalk from high power CB transmitters nearby on the Interstate.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok
I seem to receive ok in the car, but other drivers tell me to get my radio fixed anytime I transmit something. My transmission actually comes over my radio speakers and squeals.Maybe if I get an external antenna, it will improve. It is nice and compact.Odd that the channel display disappears when you adjust the squelch. It says it's supposed to do that in the manual, so it's a proper function, just odd.It gets me the info I need, but if you want to transmit in a car, get an external antenna.

4-0 out of 5 stars Midland 75-785
I bought this as a replacement for my fullsize cobra unit that was "borrowed" from my car without my knowledge.Overall I really like this unit.It is small, compact and can be easily moved from vehicle to vehicle. The best part about it is that you can either have it wired in the car or run it as a handheld. The only downside to the unit is the fairly small speaker, but if you turn down the radio there really is no problem. In terms of performance, I think this little radio works better than any I have had before.I am able to pick up the NOAA weather stations much clearer than I was before.Overall a great product for the price. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars radio review
I bought 2.One of them gets used everyday for work and has been most helpful and is working fine. The other was purchased for trips and boating. It also works fine and was useful for the purpose in which it was purchased.Of course though, the distance in which it is advertised to reach and the actual distance are two diffenent numbers; the latter being less; though adequate for out uses.

4-0 out of 5 stars works great, but......
This handheld CB works great on all channels, but only for short range. The external antenna helps a lot when traveling by car. All in all a good buy for the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Radio...
I recently bought and installed this radio in my truck, and I have not had any problems yet!!!A few minor details are the noise blanker seems really sesitive (sometimes when it is on I do not receive any traffic) but that is about it.I enjoy Cobra products, this is my second radio (I just traded up from a 25NWXT), I have a Cobra HG2000 Antenna, and I am waiting on a Cobra Mic for my radio. So far no problems with any of it and I hope to have none down the road!!!!!

Don't believe the last review.I had mine about a month before I tossed it out the window somewhere near Charlotte, NC.Nothing but problems, barely recieved or transmitted and was extremely weak when it did.I actually had truckers ask me to stop transmitting because all they could hear was squealing when I keyed.Tossed it, kept my K40 antenna, bought a Uniden Pro538W and have loved it!Much better radio!Don't buy anything Cobra makes! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not top...
My first CB radio. Works very well for on highway use and NOAA weather anywhere...really anywhere. Not the top model but good for a first CB radio, for someone who doesnt want to pay over $100 but still get a decent radio. I would recommend this item to anyone, except professional truck drivers. I run a firestick I antenna and it works well. Good for highway info and directions. Be sure to purchase an SWR meter, or get it tuned by a professional, to ensure that your radio is tuned correctly, else you could burn it up. CB radios are NOT plug and play devices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cobra HH38WXST
Handheld CBs are the most useful of all two way radios. Although a CB handheld's range is not equal to a GMRS radio, but greater than an FRS unit, more people use CB than GMRS and FRS combined, especially while on the road, so assistance is within easy reach. And no license is required like a GMRS. To boost your range while in a car, use an external antenna. This will make your range equal to a mobile CB, plus make recieving signals far easier; making this radio a viable alternative to a permenant mount mobile that is difficult to move from car-to-car. The NOAA weather reciever is a great feature. With 7 NOAA and 3 International (Canadian) channels, weather info can be had anywhere with this radio. I recommend this radio to all CB'ers, especially hunters and fisherman who communicate with buddies while outdoors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cobra HH38WXST Hand Held CB.
The Cobra HH38WXT Hand Held CB is a high quality, light weight, well designed unit that performs as the manufacturer stated. It is also small enough to allow smaller hands to comfortably reach around it.

Editorial Review

Join the vibrant world of amateur radio or upgrade your existing equipment with the Cobra 150 GTL DX four-band, 10-meter model. Though it looks and works similarly to a CB radio, the 150 GTL DX is technically a ham radio, and operates from 28 to 29.7 MHz (as compared to traditional 26.965 to 27.405 MHz CB frequencies). The advantage of the 10-meter design is simple: more power. The device offers a robust 15 watts of transmit power, which produces a longer range for transmission and reception. As a result, operators can make hundreds of friends around town or around the world, or they can use the radio for emergency purposes, serving as a conduit between citizens and police/emergency services during hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. 1-0 out of 5 stars This is a pretender! It is not satifactory for HAM use!
This radio like almost any channelized radio used in the HAM bands that do not have FM allocations or do not have special restrictions to channelized operations only is not sufficiently frequency agile for normal use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works great, User friendly.
The Uniden PRO538W works great! As long as you have a good quality antenna set up, and take the time to tune everything with an SWR meter this CB is amazing. I use it for off-roading, so the range wasn't a big concern to me, but rest assured, when properly set up, this thing can get some killer range on the highway. The ability to access weather channels is a nice feature too, I use it more than I thought I would. Having the PA function is a good novelty, when hooked to a speaker you can have a lot of fun talking to people on the street as you pass by. Great way to pick-up chicks. So overall, a great product, as long as you set it up and tune it properly. When matched with a good antenna, this CB won't be beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CB radio
The Uniden Pro538W is a fantastic radio. The front-fire speaker is very clear compared to my other CB.This makes a huge difference because many CB'ers have an accent and lingo that I have trouble deciphering. The microphone is built for heavy use.It has a hefty coiled cable with a connector that screws on to the radio. You don't need to worry about the mic coming unplugged. The display has an LED meter that indicates the strength of signals that you are receiving and transmitting.I think the meter is too small to look at while I'm driving down the highway. You can also pick up NOAA weather broadcasts. The squelch and RF gain adjustments work great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Antenna
The previous review that mentions antennas are key to a good CB setup is correct. For a normal CB user I would recommend either the Wilson lil' Wil or the Wilson 500 antenna. Both are magnetic mount antennas. The lil' Wil antenna is a relatively small antenna and it's only around $39.00. Actually any Wilson CB antenna will be fine. Also, to do a good job at setting up your antenna you should purchase an SWR meter. They are not expensive. You only need the meter connected inline between the radio and antenna when you are adjusting the antenna. Once you are done adjusting the antenna you can take the meter out of the connection and connect the antenna directly to the radio. Don't be fooled by cheap ordinary CB antennas like you will find at radio shack. Do not settle for anything less then a Wilson antenna. Cobra and Uniden both make fabulous CB radios so either make will be fine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Size=greater versatility
This unit's small size makes it possible to mount in any vehicle. Every car at my house has a spot where it could be mounted (but it stays in my truck!). This radio works just as good as the more expensive ones, as long as your antenna is of high quality and tuned. I highly recomend this radio to people who are looking for a basic radio that won't break the bank, and for the CB'ers who just want to communcate to other drivers without having to mess with RF gain, delta tune, dyamic boost, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Antenna Question
The previous review that mentions antennas are key to a good CB setup is correct. For a normal CB user I would recommend either the Wilson lil' Wil or the Wilson 500 antenna. Both are magnetic mount antennas. The lil' Wil antenna is a relatively small antenna and it's only around $39.00.Actually any Wilson CB antenna will be fine. Also, to do a good job at setting up your antenna you should purchase an SWR meter. They are not expensive. You only need the meter connected inline between the radio and antenna when you are adjusting the antenna.Once you are done adjusting the antenna you can take the meter out of the connection and connect the antenna directly to the radio.Don't be fooled by cheap ordinary CB antennas like you will find at radio shack.Do not settle for anything less then a Wilson antenna.Cobra and Uniden both make fabulous CB radios so either make will be fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Response to Range
The range of any cb depends upon the antenna.A $30 cb on a good antenna will have considerable more range than a $150 cb on a cheap antenna.Inexpensive cbs do have less sensitivity and features of more expensive cbs, but if you are just starting out, I would suggest an inexpensive cb with a good antenna such as a Wilson 'Lil Will' magnet mount. If you purchase the antenna at a cb shop, normally they will be more than happy to install and tune the antenna for you free of charge. The antenna normally runs around $30 and is one of the better entry level antennas out there.I have ran a cb for 10 years and I still use one as a back up.But remember, the secret to range is in the antenna system.. not so much the radio. But whatever you choose.. do not get one of those 'through the glass' or a 'rubber magnet mount' antenna. These are poor antennas with very limited range, usually less that a mile. Get something with a steel whip equal to or over 36" in height. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The CB radio has been around since the 1930s. To see that the Citizens Band is stillbeing produced and sold is testament to its reliability and usefulness. Cobra has brought backtheir version of the CB with this 29-LTD. They've made some nice improvements to the CB youmight have used a decade or two ago. Key improvements to this radio include a front panelmicrophone connector which makes in-dash installation a cinch. Cobra has also provided a ninefoot microphone cord so that you keep in touch from a good distance, whether you're located ina truck cab or dispatch office. The final noteworthy improvement are tactile controls for safer, and more accurate, functionality. Other features include: antenna warning indicator, SWRcalibration, instant Channel 9, PA capability, dimmer control, switchable noise blanker and RFgain. In a time of seemingly un-ending technological advances, it's nice to see something wecreated back in the late 1930s is still alive and kicking. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best AM CB out there!
There are a lot of CB radios out there and the Cobra 29 LTD Classic has stood the test of time.It comes with the traditional chrome detailed brushed aluminum faceplate that really shows off this radio. But the true quality is in the radio itself.I have owned plenty of CBs in the past 30 years including some top-end AM/sideband CBs as well as a few export radios, and as far as a straight AM 40 channel CBs, this is one that really shines above the others. The most impressive features in this radio are its sensitivity in receiving, even while the Noise-Blanker and/or Automatic Noise Limmiter circuits are engaged. And these circuits actually eliminate static and engine-generated noise...unlike some other radios.Overall, the 29LTD Classic is perhaps the best inexpensive AM CB out there! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compact CB
This CB radio is excellent for small spaces. It does not have all the "gadget" features some other radios have but they aren't necesary anyway. The output is comparable also.I installed it in a Jeep Wrangler. Now that it is in, I couldn't picture using any other radio.Perfect for Jeep people!!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic CB radio
This is a pretty good CB for a basic rig in it's price class. If all you are looking for is a no-frills CB for the car to keep in touch with others or get road information while traveling, the Pro 510XL is a nice rig.I have a cigarette lighter plug on my Pro 510 so I can easily put it in the car whenever I go on a trip. The audio from the speaker is pretty clean, and I have found that the range on the CB is pretty good for it's size.It helps to have a good antenna, such as a Wilson 1000 or something similar. One thing I don't like about the radio is that the microphone is pretty cheap.Uniden chose to use an electret microphone element in the mic for the Pro 510 and Pro 520 radios. The mic element draws about 3 Volts of power from the radio itself to power the mic element. This makes it virtually impossible to use any other mic other than the one that comes with the radio.I have been told that you have to use some sort of amplified mic, like one of the Astatic series hand mics on the Pro 510 if you want to go with a better quality mic for the radio. If you try to use a regular dynamic mic like most CB's use, the transmit audio just won't sound very good. The mic that Uniden supplies with the radio is adequate, I wouldn't say it is excellent.All-in-all, I think the Pro 510XL is a good basic CB.Uniden backs the rig with a 2-year warranty.Give this radio a look if all you are looking for is a simple CB for traveling and keeping in touch with others on the road.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter or Back-Up !!!
I am partial to Uniden anyway, however this CB is great for a first time user or as a back up to a more expensive unit.I have been using CB for about 10 years and I always make sure I have a Uniden 510 available for a back up, or use it in a second car.It has superior range when used with a good antenna and the received audio is decent. I would suggest using an external speaker unless you have a super quiet vehicle. The anl switch cuts through static really well to improve reception, although it sometimes dulls out the audio of the person you are trying to hear. You can use it with a cigarette lighter plug with an adapter from radio shack for a few dollars. They will even show you how to hook it up.It all boils down to being a great CB at a great price.Remember a simple rule of thumb... An inexpensive CB on a good antenna will perform just as well as a high-end CB on a cheap antenna.Don't forget to tune your antenna and have fun! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Radio is unbelievable!!!!
I had bought this radio at a Radio Shack store in town when we went to visit my dad in Indiana last Christmas. I had only bought it because my old Radio Shack cb I have had for about 8 1/2 years had died on me on the way there. I Bought the 520Xl and hooked it up to my SWR meter with my 3 ft Firestik antenna with magnet mount I had on the back, and right off, i never had to make an adjustment at all, because I had a SWR reading between 1:0 and 1:5. I used this radio on the way back, and was able to reach people up to 5 miles away, which was great! unfortunatly on the way back, I had to take my antenna off because everytime a semi passed us on the road, it would blow my antenna off the truck. When I got home, I took my CB to a cb shop near by and had it peaked and tuned, so now it gets 14 watts out instead of 7, and I can talk over 15-20 miles on a clear day. I did however switch antennas to a K40 3 ft antenna with adjustable sleeve that I had for years, and it works about the same.Get the radio, get you a good quality antenna like Firestik, K40, Wilson, or another good name brand. If you know somebody who can do it, get it peaked and tune,or take it to a cb shop and have them do it, and you will get somebody surely everytime you talk. Well worth the money, sorry about rambling on, but I felt if I shared experiences, it would help.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good, compact CB.
This CB is a very good buy. For the quality of it, the price is the best I've seen. I used it with the Cobra A1500 antenna. I found about 5 miles. Also, it is compact and fit in the console. The only problem was getting use to the squelch and RF Gain. This is my first CB and I am very happy with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Small but Powerfull

Editorial Review

Join the vibrant world of amateur radio or upgrade your existing equipment with the Cobra 200 GTL DX four-band, 10-meter model. Though it looks and works similarly to a CB radio, the 200 GTL DX is technically a ham radio, and operates from 28 to 29.7 MHz (as compared to traditional 26.965 to 27.405 MHz CB frequencies). The advantage of the 10-meter design is simple: more power output, which is handled by the dual 40-watt final Mosfet transistors and the 30-watt RF output for a combination of more than 100 watts. As a result, operators can make hundreds of friends around town or around the world, or they can use the radio for emergency purposes, serving as a conduit between citizens and police/emergency services during hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice on SSB/FM - Bad on AM....
I bought my Cobra to use in conjunction with a 2 meter transverter. SSB is great and "natural sounding" due to a particularly wide SSB filter. FM is equally nice. Unfortunately, Cobra seem to have utilized a very narrow AM filter. As a result AM is "muddy" and pinched sounding - definitely something I didn't expect from the manufacturer of the great-sounding Cobra 148.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Nothing but problems, receive was terrible, sent back to cobra for warranty, then for refund.

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: This is NOT a CB radio!
For those of you who are looking at this thinking it is a CB radio, it is NOT. Though this may look like a CB radio, it is actually a radio designed to transmit in the amateur radio frequency spectrum. Transmitting on this radio without the proper license issued by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) will subject you to charges by the FCC, which can include siezure of all radio equipment, as well as monetary fines in the thousands of dollars.

1-0 out of 5 stars broke in two months
I was attracted to the features of this radio, but i should have listend to the reviews. The detchable face broke in a couple of months.

2-0 out of 5 stars Midland, Not Listening
I recently purchased a new 79-290, (August 05). I have not had the unit long enough to make an accurate review about it, because the face plate locking mechanism broke almost immediately. (About 45 min worth of listening time, plus one operation of the face plate.)This failure renders the unit completely useless, which is the whole idea behind a detachable face security, to prevent theft. However, the weakness of this particular part of the unit is a major problem. Apparently, this is not a new problem. After checking around, there are quite a few occurrances of this problem. One reveiw I read was in december several years ago. Midland is not "On The Air" on this design failure. There were other quirks I noticed also, which matched the same descriptions as the early december complaints. I guess I was mistaken that Midland's QC people would have proactively solved this problem by now, they have certainly had enough years of time. If their engineers are not capable of correcting this problem, then here's a solution: Make the locking swing arm, or what ever you call it, out of metal, instead of plastic. I have owned several detachable face radios, and none of them ever had problems with the face doc's. Yours is an example of what you don't do. I was impressed by the small size, it's overall set-up, front facing mic port. The unit does have some other little oddities that I would change, but it's very usable. But this thing with the face plate is full turn -off. Midland, "TURN ON YOUR EARS", This could be an excellent unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch out Galaxy and Cobra
This radio presents a real threat to the Cobra and Galaxy brands. I have worked on radios since the early 70s and have yet to find one of this quality at anywhere near this kind of price.
