Editorial Review

This Sony TCM-929 Desktop Cassette Recorder is a modern, detailed and feature-rich cassette recorder for the home or office. With a built-in microphone and speaker, the recorder is ready to record your thoughts, exam reviews, important reminders and novel ideas. The retractable handle is a plus for those carting the recorder around school, or from meeting to meeting. The three-digit tape counter, one touch recording and pause control all ensure that you have all the features necessary to make editing and recording an easy and fruitful process. The TCM-929 comes with a microphone jack should you need to attach a more dynamic microphone. There is also a headphone jack for those studying in the library or coffee shop. The recorder runs on the included AC adaptor or with four, AA batteries. When using Sony's Alkaline batteries, you can expect up to eight and a half hours of operation. To help you save battery life, Sony has installed a full automatic shut-off in this recorder. This feature operates all the major buttons, including play, fast forward, record and rewind. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, glad they still make these
I originally bought this recorder for interviews so I can't comment on its usefulness for music. However I've been very satisfied with it for its intended use.As of two years ago I could find this model at both Circuit City and Best Buy, and when earlier this year I wanted to buy a back-up machine they no longer carried it.I have used it for both in person and phone interviews and my husband has used it extensively for taping streamed ballgames off the Internet. The quality has been good to excellent.Despite its size it is not particularly heavy, though it will not compare to a microcassette.

Guess I am just a true Sony person.I always get great performance from all my Sony stuff. The Desk Recorder is absolutely perfect.Easy to use and controls are made simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good things in small packages
I have had another radio/tapeplayer walkman before. It was a struggle to keep my stations tuned in and they were never static free.No problem with this one!The sound is of excellent quality for the size of the unit.I'm very happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the price
Sony is one of the best electronic brands around. This Walkman is really easy to use, has good sound quality, and the batteries last a long time. The one thing I wish I had looked at was a Walkman that was AC/DC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sony WWM-FX290 Stereo Cassette Player
This is a very good cassette player - and, these days, the local stores do not cary many, or no, cassette players - so I am comparing it to my old trusty Sony Walkman that died ... The sound is great with and without the Megabass feature. At first I didn't like the caring case but I got used to it and have no problems with it. On the downside the player doesn't have continuous play, or reverse, feature so, if you'd like to hear music on the reverse side, you have to stop, open the carying case, take the player out and reverse the cassette ... a pain. The window that displays control features is very very small so it is difficult to see the commands. The controls themselves are not very intuitive and I needed directions to set up, or change, the pre-sets but when that was done the player was fun to have and use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you'd need in a Walkman...
The Mega Bass feature is by far the best I've seen (or should I say, heard) in a while. Radio quality is about 48kbps but with the MB feature on, it sounds about 128kbps! Furthermore, the TV tuner (sad it only has up to channel 13) is a unique albeit helpful feature in some scenarios. The weather band does not work for me at all, so I can't review fully on that subject. I pity you people who do not have any reception on the FM/AM tuner as you're missing out on a bundle.

I am quite disappointed with this sony product. It works well but the big drawback is that you hear the motor rumble in your recordings. I wonder if other buyers have this problem or did I get a poor model? Buy cheap and get cheap I should know better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Defective Remote
I purchased the RCA RCD152 for my 94 year old Father for Christmas and the remote was dead out of the box. After returning the unit the remote worked for three months and died. So now what do I do for a remote? I would not recommend this unit unless you don't care if the remote fails.
3-0 out of 5 stars Returned twice
Ordered two of these at different times and on both of them the remote died within a week. Really wasn't that impressed with the sound quality either and had to use the antenna to get good reception. Decided to try a different brand and went with the Panasonic RX-D27. The sound is incredible and the remote so far works great. Also, I do not even have too raise the antenna at all. This boombox is only about $15.00 more than the RCA and well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars great all-in-1 palyer

3-0 out of 5 stars Big and a Bit Tinny
This boombox was larger than I expected and the sound quality is disappointing. You either have a tinny sound or a muffled bass sound (with megabass on), no territory in-between.I plugged it in and did a side-by-side comparison with my old boombox (which the Sony was to replace) and was surprised to find that my decade-old, off-brand boombox with the analog tuner and equalizer adjustments still sounds better to me than the Sony. Sigh - the CD player on my old one doesn't work, I can't preset radio stations on it, and I was really sure this Sony box would be a huge step up.Well, it takes up more space on the kitchen counter, but I'll probably end up keeping it anyway because eating the shipping costs to return it is too big a pill to swallow.I wish I had tried to find this unit locally to check it out before purchasing it from Amazon.(Still love Amazon tho!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Sound
This is exactly what I was looking for.The sound is great. My only complaint is that the digital window is difficult to read since it is small and dark.I am very pleased with the sound, though.

3-0 out of 5 stars This one has Cassette but doesn't have MP3 Capability
This is a good CD and Cassette player. But, it doesn't play Mp3 CD's. Mp3 CD's are the current technology that permits about 10 hours of music on ONE CD! The Mp3's are especially useful for books on tape as you can have an entire book on one or sometimes 2 CD's! My suggestion is to find the Sony (Model ZSSN10PS) that has capability for regular AND Mp3 CD--- unless you play alot of cassettes---in which case get this one. Or better yet, by this one AND the ZSSN10PS...if you're rich that is! :o)Email:boland7214@aol. ... Read more

This cassette player is well designed and well built. We have been using them for over four years in our elementary school and have had only one cassette player out of 25 stop working. Children (ages 7 - 11) use them to listen to recorded books as they read along silently. We power them with rechargeable batteries.I also use one to listen to music when I am walking, and it sounds fine to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOMETIMES A LITTLE PEACE IS WORTH A POUND OF GOLD!
I've been through a lot of these little Walkman style players over the years, but rarely did I go for the original article until now. I've had this unit about 2 years now, and it continues to be the best one I've had so far. Certainly far from perfect (what is?) but it's continued to work, hasn't 'eaten' my tapes (as so many do), has proven to be a bit easier on the batteries and is the most compact of the units I've ever owned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moderate Quality Audiophile Tape Deck
150 USD is not really an expensive price for a tape deck of this quality. That would be about 8 new CD's purchased in a store.Ten years ago tape decks cost more, but since cassette tapes are a quickly dying medium, lowering the price is the only enticement left.I have 150-200 cassette tapes with a mix of songs from about 1500 different CD's and albums, so even if I throw out 80-90% of my tapes that's still the equivalent of songs from 150+ different CD's.That would be an expensive replacement cost, let alone what the price of what 1500 CD's would cost.So a new cassette deck allows me access to those relatively few songs I still like.

2-0 out of 5 stars A few problems
I am an avid listener to radio, and I really need a cassette player, so this seemed to be an excellent combination.I like the digital tuning -- BUT -- this unit has a problem. The surface buttons for turning on AM and FM radio are easily bumped, and if yhou are carrying this around in your backpack, you better have the"lock" button on or you will certainly drain the battery.I have gone through about six sets of batteries simply because it gets switched on so easily.Another problem is that if you want to clip it to your belt, you need to put it in a holder because the unit itself does not include a belt clip. This means that you need to take it out of its holder to turn over the tape.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good But Don't Wear It To The Gym
The sound quality is good. The style is good. The grip is good. The belt latch doesn't stay latched to your belt.In other words if you are going to jog make sure this walkman is securely latched to you otherwise it will become friends with the floor real quick.I wouldn't buy it if you are going to use it for jogging or any kind of heavy activity.

1-0 out of 5 stars I'm returning mine!
This unit is awful. It is heavy and the aluminum piece flops out uncontrolably (it doesn't stay latched down). This is not like some of the models you may have seen in the stores.Do not waste your money on this walkman! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay cd player for the price
This isn't the greatest, but for the price it is an acceptable cd player. Actually, I think the sound quality is surprisingly good...but as far as I can tell the "bass boost" button is for decorative purposes only.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I was happy with this boombox for about a month, because thats about how long it took before it inexplicably stopped working, refusing to play any disc that I put in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great value boom in a stylish box. The jWin Boombox.
This boombox is really good! It can get pretty lound, the radio is great and there is no problem with the CD reader-it can handle CDRs and CDRWs. Also, there is an included external power adapter if you dont want to use batteries. It is pretty light and great for the beach. The white colouring is a bit too shiny (could be matt finished like the blue colour) but its ok as the boombox is a great value.

4-0 out of 5 stars rugged/good sound/a little weird
I've been using this to listen to cassettes while I work on a very active job. It's durable, has a great sound, but a couple of quirks. The volume knob is at the opposite end from the headphone jack, which means that I really have to have headphones with an in-line volume control, because I sometimes keep it in a pocket with the volume control at the bottom. And the tape goes in the back instead of the front, so I have to take it off my belt every time I want to change a tape. The FM reception with the included headphones is poor because the headphone cord is too short; with regular-length headphones, the reception is fine. Also, it is not auto-reverse, so I spend a fair amount of time taking it off my belt and flipping tapes. It has a volume limiter that I've never seen on any other device, and I can't figure out why anybody would use it. It also has a button that locks in all the settings you have so that you can't switch stations, turn off the radio, etc., by bumping into things and accidently hitting the buttons. On my job that's a plus. The sound and the ruggedness make this a good buy. And I can tell no difference between this tape player and a new one: The tape head, pinch roller and everything else seem new. Even the outside of it looks good, no scratches. Nice value.

4-0 out of 5 stars About to buy my second
I have one of these, and use it every day at work.I've had it something over 12-18 months and will buy another.I particularly like the five different buttons pre-programmed with 5 different stations -- push a different button and you are on another 'band' with five different stations on those five buttons. This way you can put in 25 FM and five AM stations.I also really really like the battery-level indicator. The little screen that shows things like station and battery-level is black-on-gray and although fine to read in normal light conditions it would be impossible in the dark. On the other hand the buttons are all easy to tell apart just by touch and I use them a lot without ever looking at the unit.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied!
I have had this product for almost a year now, and I am most satisfied with its performance.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Mine was just horrible
I really urge everyone to stay far away from this product if you value your cassettes. The one I purchased mangled the first cassette I put in (an irreplaceable one - how could I have been so silly as to put it in without testing the player?). In any case, this product really is a piece of junk. But then, you get what you pay for.
2-0 out of 5 stars not for recording
I bought this for recording my son playing violin for his review, but the play back sound was terrible.
