5-0 out of 5 stars Nice VCR, brakes (on mine) not bad...
This is a good solid basic VCR.The main complaint on here seems to be the "brakes".That when you press "stop", it stops a few seconds after you press.I was worried about this, but mine seems to be good.At most there is a 1 full second delay, which to me is normal.A fresh set of good alkaline batteries in the remote prolly also helps.Anyways, I'd highly reccomend it, but seems to be hit or miss with the brake problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars good system
An excellent, for the price, system for those who just want a safety backup to be able to play their old VHS tapes years from now.But limited in and out options, so not easily integrated into systems as a component.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just The Basics
I concur with R. Cheney: the transport mechanism is rather basic.Fast Forward or Reverse don't stop on a dime. And you have only one choice for slow motion that I could find.Nor does there seem to be any tracking adjustment for slow speed or paused images, which yields snow and noise. So not near as user friendly and robust as older machines in my collection, but it does the basic job of playing a video. At normal speed the playback quality is fine.Just don't expect anything fancy like machines of, oh, 5 years ago. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars My new VCR
The VCR arrived in good shape in good time.It has capabilities that are not offered by retail stores in my area they are beginning to phase out VCRs in favor of other recording methods. I'm satisfied with Amazon.com and will continue to do business with you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Came fast and in good condition!
Great job in getting it fast, and it was very well wrapped and in good condition!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sony SLV-N750 VCR
I bought this on Amazon about 5 weeks ago and am satisfied with it.The display is big enough to read the channel # from across the room. The remote is easy to use, although it works the volume but not the channels on my 8 yr old TV so I must have the VCR on and use it's tuner to watch TV (TV remote lost).the knob on the box, rather than buttons to rw and ff, is odd, but works. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Quality and Cost Effective S-VHS Recorder from JVC
JVC has always manufactured the best S-VHS recorders. You get 400 lines of resolution when you record on S-VHS tape in the SP mode. This 19-micron, 4-head recording unit records S-VHS tapes in the EP mode with impressive results as well. This is a truly exceptional unit for price. If you record off cable TV the playback picture quality looks outstanding. I can't say enough about this S-VHS recorder.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overhyped
I have four VCR's in the house recording various programs that I watch later, which allows me to fast forward through commercials saving an average of 10-15 minutes of viewing per hour.I bought two of the JVC HR-S2902U based on a couple of positive reviews, which I now find was a mistake. First of all the "manual"(a big 28 x 20 inch sheet of paper folded in eighths) leaves a lot to be desired. It has no index and it is not easy to find a specific topic. There is no Troubleshooting section.Usually I can program and run a VCR without a manual because I have been doing this for a long time, but not this one.The programing is very unorthodox and not as easy as other VCR's.The remote is too smalland the buttons are not organized for efficiency as well as hard to handle because of the size.As with some other VCR's to select a station to program you have to "cycle" through the Channels rather than press, for instance, two keys to get say from Ch 3 to Ch 60.You can enter the channel on the set first to eliminate this headache, but it's just another step that should be unnecessary.I am not wild about the recording's either.I feel they are pasty looking, but I can live with that. There are other annoyances too numerous to mention that require detailed explanation, so I will just sayI will be going back to Panasonic and I won't be ordering another JVC VCR right away.

2-0 out of 5 stars not a quality product
I have not been happy with this product. It works sometimes, and sometimes it just freezes up.I have tounplug it to get it going again. Also, vhs tapes get stuck inside, and are difficult to get out. Also, after recording a dvd, you have to finalize it to be able to use it on other brands of dvds.Well, often it will just quit with an error condition in the middle of trying to finalize a dvd. When that happens, you probably just lost everything you had recorded.

4-0 out of 5 stars OK.............For a VCR
Obviously, VCR's are becoming a thing of the past. The problem is what do we do with all those old tapes we still like to watch?I bought this primarily for its tv tuner. Asthetically, the case is plastic and it does not look like the sturdiest piece of gear. However, its mechanics fuction well and I have had no problems with recording or loss of tapes due to the machine eating them. The interface is not bad, but it leaves a bit to be desired.First, there is no tv/vcr switch on the front of the unit.I use it as my tuner, and it does not remember that it is set to vcr mode when it is turned on and off. I have to press the switch on the remote every time I watch TV. Next, it will not change channels unless I press the enter key. This is sometimes confusing because it is not clear if the machine received the right input from the remote. My old vcr switched channels as soon as the second digit was pressed. Finally, when using the channel up and down keys, the blue screen appears briefly. This is a small issue, but can be bothersome if you channel surf like I do.
1-0 out of 5 stars Thrown away!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy Sony SLV-N900
I've had numerous VCRs in my life. Some were good and some were better. This is the worst one. The problem is the self lock mechanism which renders the VCR virtually dead (no power and no possibility to turn it on). There is a way to bypass this problem (which first occurred when we just bought the machine) and were let in on the "secret" by customer support. However, less then ten months after I bought the Sony SLV-N900, the same thing happened, only this time I was not able to unlock it. I was told by customer service that I need to send it to them, and they will repair it for $63.13 because the warranty covers the parts, but not the work!!! - BEWARE ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars poor electrical connection after 6 months
This little guy was working fine until it just wouldn't come on one day.Turns out the electrical cord is loose and has to be jingled to turn on.Since it only had a 90 day full warranty on it, and I have only owned it since April... it is not worth getting fixed due to labor cost. This defect may be isolated...just wanted everyone to be aware of this problem with mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional S-VHS Recorder
JVC has always manufactured the best S-VHS recorders. You get 400 lines of resolution when you record on S-VHS tape in the SP mode. This unit does have S-VHS ET capability but I still prefer to record on S-VHS tapes for best results. This is an exceptional unit. If you record off cable or Satellite TV the playback picture quality looks outstanding. For the price you get a lot of good features. Years ago these were very expensive units. I can't say enough about this S-VHS recorder.

1-0 out of 5 stars JVC not user friendly
I wanted to replace an older VCR and so I bought this JVC HRS5902U based on some glowing reviews and rather impressive technical features.Needless to say words are cheap;experience is the best teacher. This is the most user unfriendly device I have ever encountered.I have to keep the manual on hand just to work through every major and minor quirk it throws at me.It seems to arbitraily decide what it is going to do when.It is frustrating to program because the program buttons jump rapidly in 30 minute intervals or they do not work at all.Itdoes not have a visible tape counter;it always resets to SP after you turn it off so you always run out of tape;if set to time record you cannot stop it in midprogram. You have to unplug it.When you plug it in the auto channel programmermisses at least one channel. And for whatever reason it will start blinking odd little symbols meaning something or other but you cannot tell because you have to read throughthe whole manual again. The tape marking is a farce.I can just tell that the designers of this machine were looking more to impress their fellow engineers with their cleverness than they were trying to simplify life for the customer.Watch for it on Ebay.

4-0 out of 5 stars JVC NEVER DSAPPOINTS
I have been a loyal JVC customer for the past twenty years and have never been disappointed by their products. This versatile VCR is no exception. With its multi head recording and playback ability plus its user friendly remote and operations, the JVC is a welcome addition to my home theater system. For those who are looking for longevity, simplicity and solid quality, I would recommend this component. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy
I like many others have been robbed by GoVideo's VR2940. I don't want to rehash all of the other negative comments but this product is a waste of money that does not work.

5-0 out of 5 stars HOW TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS
First of all, none of the negative reviews here have mentioned anyone attempting to clean their DVD Drive with a DVD Head Cleaner. You should do this FIRST before calling something a piece of junk, and you should make it clear that you are not technicially incompetent, as some of you apparently are.For example, How could a DVD player "Lock me out of my TV" ???And did you bother to FINALIZE your DVDs before trying to play them on a different piece of hardware?
4-0 out of 5 stars FIX for many GoVideo VR2940 issues
I have been told that this model has a problem with its auto clock that can cause the unit to lock up.Just go into the setup menu, buried deep in the third or fourth column of the menu, at the bottom you will find Auto Clock-turn it OFF, this will help product reliability tremendously.I have also been told ther is no fix for this, so be sure to set it off and leave it off! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
Wow!I guess I should feel lucky. My MVR650 didn't start eating tapes until months after I bought it.Well, not eating them outright, anyway. It *always* chewed on them a bit. From the beginning fast forwarding would scrape the oxide off the tape (that section would never be watchable again) but it didn't actually start refusing to release the tape for several months.Shutting itself off as soon as you inserted a tape didn't start for months either along with ejecting that cassette once you turned it back on.Oh, but I said it wouldn't release the tape, didn't I?Well it would eject the *cassette*, but that doesn't mean it would release the *tape*.
1-0 out of 5 stars BAD BAD BAD
I bought this thing (it's a Magnavox) and like most of the VCR's made in Asian countries it's a piece of junk. I wasted a couple of days trying to find out why I got no video out. Finally found it is the VCR. Isn't it ironic how all those Asian countries look down on us, call us lazy, incompetant, etc. Yet, unless they copy something we build here, exactly as we build it, all they can produce is junk.
1-0 out of 5 stars Magnavox VCR

I ordered another Magnavox VCR because of my past success with the brand. This VCR is a cheap piece of junk. It is made in China and it did not work the first day I had it. I am saddend that Magnavox has abandoned quality products for cheap labor. I will look for another brand of VCR. Stay away from this junk. I would give it 0 stars if that were possible. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Two years later and I still love it
My wife bought this two years ago to replace using my ps2 as a dvd player. We use it at least once a week and we have been very pleased. We haven't had any problems with the VCR and the DVD player stopped working for about a week, but came back and we haven't had any problems since.Plus, since it's progressive scan it looks great on an HD TV.

1-0 out of 5 stars avoid this machine!!
We have owned this dvd/vcr combo player for about 9 months now.It is awful! The DVD player in particular is very poor.Often, the video will freeze, but the audio will continue and it will "skip".Also, many DVD's do not played properly. One movie that has the deleated scenes added back in will stop playing whenever it comes to an extra scene.Other times it will continue to play as it is supposed to.Also, home made DVD's with multiple chapters will sometimes play only the first chapter, sometimes not.On my dauaghters Baby Einstein, it will often only play the Spanish version and not allow us to access the DVD menu to play it in English.Other times it will.It is so inconsistant that it is unreliable. The VCR seems to function properly, although it is not used as often.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worked good for a while
I bought this item in March of 2005 and never had any problems. Until about November of 2005. Now when I put in a dvd it just keeps skipping around like the discs are scratched and they are perfectly brand new DVD's. I put in one of those dvd cleaner discs that have little brushes underneath them to clean the eye. Well that isn't the problem I guess because it didn't help any.

1-0 out of 5 stars Last JVC I'll own
The unit picks up interference from my treadmill during tape playback and transmits it to the TV. The current JVC that I am trying to replace does not do this. JVC sent a replacement that does the same thing. Now I can't return the unit. JVC customer service says it isn't a defect and will only replace it again. Who wants another unit if it does the same thing? The auto function didn't work correctly - I finally had to manually program the channels. There is no backup battery system like on my current unit. If the power flickers, you have to reprogram everything. The display only show time and channel - you don't know where you are on the tape without pressing the display button and the display goes off after a few seconds. I used to be a loyal JVC customer but if this is the quality of JVC now, I'm finding a new manufacturer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Newer made machine???

1-0 out of 5 stars If you are thinking ofbuying a JVC VCR HR-J692 U...Think Again!
If some one had told us that a company like JVC would produce a piece of junk like their VCR-HR J692/U, I wouldn't have believed it. This unit is to electronics what the Yugo was to automobiles.

1-0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY UNRELIABLE
I bought the whole Sony system including the surround sound with this product.About 6 months after I bought it, the DVDs would occasionally fail to load. One would fail, and then the next 2 would work, and I just persisted on.When a DVD failed, it would not eject. It would take anywhere from 5 minutes to 8 hours to eject, turning the player on and off.Three out of four times I played a DVD, it NEVER failed to skip or freeze up.I've finally had it - I'm putting it in the Good Will box and getting something else.I was silly, silly for not returning the thing immediately, but I kept on having faith it would work itself out.NOT.

3-0 out of 5 stars It has good and bad
Around the same time, we had bought two DVD players, a Mintek ($40) and this Sony ($200.) I have to say I like the Mintek a lot more. This Sony Combo is very picky on what DVD's I put! The Mintek is able to play ALL data, most video, and even a PAL DVD from Italy. But the Sony, which costs way too much more, is not even able to play any of that. :(. Although, the reliablility level is very good. It really has never given us any technological problems. But I am saddened to see that Sony dosen't allow so many kinds of DVD's. Also, we have had experiences when this DVD would freeze in between parts of movies. It does play DATA MP3 CD. (Which thats a good feature.) The VHS player is very good and has not given any problems. I would reccomend this to someone who dosen't use data CD's with , AVI or any type of media file. Also its good for DVD's which are either WORLD or NTSC region. If you are someone who watches only DVD's and VHS, than this is for you. Thanks and God Bless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Picky, picky, picky!(the reviews, not the player)
I have read the reviews for this product, and I have been horrified by how nit-picking and petty some of them are. One star simply because it does not play a Sony disc? Just how many of those does the buyer have in proportion to discs from other manufacturers? And one star simply because it does not do every single thing you demand of it? Isn't that more than a little extreme?

1-0 out of 5 stars 3 months use out of an $80 VCR
I bought this VCR to replace a cheap $60 Magnavox that began having issues after 6 long years. As far as I knew Sony still had a good reputation in electronics, and perhaps it does, but the Sony SLV-N500 I bought was and is a horrible VCR.1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible VCR
I bought this VCR to match my other Sony components.I assumed that the Sony name meant something.I had two other VCRs that stopped working which didn't surprise me since they were very cheap no name brands I purchased at Walmart.I hoped that if I bought a Sony VCR it would be my last.I was very wrong. After a month and a half the VCR started ruining tapes.Note that this is long enough to be out of warranty.Sony will let you send it back to get repaired, but the cost of doing so exceeds the price of a new VCR.DO NOT PURCHASE this item. You will be sorry you did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of Sony name
Sony brand has high reputation for quality. But for VCRs somehow Sony seems to have lost its focus. This was my second Sony VCR. I love Sony brand, so when the first VCR started chewing my tapes, I bought another Sony. This one doesn't chew the tapes, but its rewind is the slowest. It takes about 30 seconds to start rewinding. Ironically, fast rewind was an advertised feature. No more Sony VCRs for me.Read more

JVC supplies consumers with the best possible format for high-resolution recording with this digital VHS recorder. The device connects to the latest HDTV and hi-res projector systems through its High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) or component output, letting users archive everything from HD content (1080i and 720p) to standard digital broadcasts to analog programming. Fortunately for viewers with big videotape collections, the recorder is also compatible with the traditional VHS format, so you can still watch old videotapes and movies, along with the more modern D-Theater format. Recording lengths depend on the cassette type and the content source, with top-end D-VHS cassettes offering up to 3.5 hours of HD recording and up to 35 hours of analog recording. Other compatible cassettes include S-VHS (doesn't record HD content), S-VHS ET, Hi-Fi VHS (for multichannel analog sources), and traditional VHS. The recorder even offers MPEG-2 CODEC encoding, which enables viewers to make digital recordings of analog NTSC programming or analog cassettes (a technology aided by the Frame Synchronizer). 4-0 out of 5 stars A Great HD VCR!
This is an awsome VCR.Should you buy one now that HD DVD and Blu-Ray is to be release?I say not! Yes the picture quality on a D-theater tape blows DVD away! I have "Passion of The Christ" On DVHS and the picture and sound is awsome, pure 1080i video.I been looking for some other titles and must are no longer availible.FOX still have some movies avalible on there website, but the thing is must of those movies will be on HD Disc real soon, and for those that are lucky will be able to watch 1080p,sorry my TV only goes up to 1080i,but I'm sure it will still look great.Well any way this JVC DVHS is a great VCR.It will tied me over untill HD DVD and Blu-Ray.

5-0 out of 5 stars HD recording
I own the JVC HM-DH3000U and a Samsung 5688 1080p dlp projection TV with built in HD tuner.I receive HD from my trusty rabbit ears and record it via the firewire cable. The picture on playback is perfect!I also own a sizeable library of pre-recorded D-VHS movies. They are also stunning! Once you go HD it's hard to go back.I have read other reviews that state they can't record or playback via the firewire link.I don't think newer model HD sets have this issue. My Samsung certainly doesn't. When I record a HD broadcast I only need to press three buttons and it's recording a HDTV broadcast in full HD via the firewire. So....Having said that. I am seriously considering buying this or the other JVC D-VHS VCR that has a built in HD tuner!the HDMI input/output is very attractive and I think extends the life of the unit.Another major factor is the support for DTS.I own two D-VHS movies that have DTS tracks (Alien Directors cut and I-Robot).My 3000 only plays dolby tracks. The Dolby tracks are 500+ k.The DTS is 1500+k!!!!the difference is not subtle.D-VHS plays back video at 1080i with high FPS.When HD-DVD and Blu-Ray come out shortly they will not offer the FPS speed of these units! If you are serious about HD recording and don't mind spending the extra 10 seconds it takes to record, then this is the only way to go.Unfortunately most people have grown used to the convenience of chapter searches that DVD's offer (why I don't know)and other useless frills. When I watch a movie I do just that, I watch the movie.Quality never wins out over convenience.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Make This Mistake
I was hoping to record off to tape some High Definition football games for those slow summer days. But it can't be done.Unless you have one of those 169Time machines with a satillite dish service. That is about the ONLY way to get a HD signal into this VCR.I have digital cable ... the cable box I-Link is incompatabile with this VCR, as are almost ALL from what I have read.I have an outdoor digital antenna that feeds a clear and perfect 1080i signal into the TV (and it looks GREAT) but this VCR only accepts and records 480i ant signals. I can record cable channels in 480i standard definition format up to channel 99, since this VCR will NOT receive any channel past that. This VCR does not perform the functions of most VCR's that are available at 1/5 the price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dead after 2 minutes
Can't say much for the video or sound quality, menu options, or anything really, since this thing broke after 2 minutes of watching Monsters, Inc. on DVD.Playback just froze, the thing stopped recognizing that DVDs were in unless you turned the thing off and then back on again, and after another minute it wouldn't even startplaying the thing at all, just whirred a lot.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Price
I bought this DVD in January 2006 and have not regretted to this day. There is the issue of the eject button being absent but then again, when you eject via remote control, you still have to get up to get the DVD out of the player so maybe it is not so necessary to have an eject button.I've had no problems with this player playing my home made DVDs unlike others. It is a bit difficult to set up but besides that it is a great purchase.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not play DVD's from other regions

2-0 out of 5 stars technology has caught up to this unit
So ive had this unit for almost a year and wanted to wait long enough to write a review on it, im usually not quick to judge and it was a good thing i waited. First let me tell you that I did some very, very thorough research before purchasing ANY of these barely new DVD/VHS recorders and it came down to this one and the panasonic one, after going over every single review on this website i noticed many complaints were based on the shipping and handling and that ovbiosuly has nothing to do with the quality of the unit itself so i thought they were both pretty even as far as the reviews but i went with this sony unit since i trust the brand and many of my other equipment is sony as well...let me tell you the first surprise was getting the unit in a heavily smashed box !!! I was then understanding why there were so many bad reviews on the handling of this unit. Luckily for me only the remote control cracked a bit but was still able to use it without any problems, the unit itself was very well secured so nothing was wrong with it but i will tell you guys this if you get it from amazon you get it at your own risk because the delivery guys are not careful at all so good luck first off getting it home safe.....
1-0 out of 5 stars UNIT IS USER UNFRIENDLY -POORLY DESIGNED - NO RECORD BUTTON FOR VCR ON REMOTE - DVD RECORDER TOO COMPLEX - I RETURNED IT
I purchased this system and promptly returned it when I realized how difficult it was to use. It is what you might call "user unfriendly". In order to full understand this unit from the directions that come with it, you should have a degree in engineering, otherwise it is too complicated. I wonder what Sony was thinking when they designed this unit. No appliance should be so complicated to operate and understand. The basic set up was OK, but I could not record from TV, as stated in the manual. In addition, I attempted to burn a DVD on a DVD-R from VCR to DVD. I then tried to play it on another DVD player I had (not a sony) and it would not read it at all and gave me an error message that it was a "bad dvd".In other words, if you burn a DVD on this Sony system, you will only be able to watch it on their unit. I should think that a DVD-R or DVD-RW format should be universal and you would be able to play it on any DVD player. Not so. I also did not like the fact that the VCR had a record button on the unit itself, but not on the remote. So, if you wanted to record something with the VCR it was not convenient at all. One would expect a VCR and DVD Recorder unit to have the same capabilities and recording features, but it does not. I would not recommend this unit to anyone. Sony needs to take this garbage off the market and go back to the drawing board as far as their DVD recorder units go. Sony should also try to design a unit that is easy to understand, install and use. No one wants to go through the hassle that you will be subjected to if you bring this DVD Recorder/VCR home. By the way, the salesman at the store said that a lot of people who purchased this Sony unit, returned them for the same reasons I have mentioned. Take my advice: don't waste your time and money on this system. It is a real pain in the neck. I wouldn't give a 1 star rating for it, except that is the lowest you can go. In actuality, I would give this system a minus zero! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Died after a year and a half
Very disappointing.I've been a loyal Toshiba customer and used the machine, but did not overuse it, and cleaned the heads regularly and one night, barely a year and a half after purchase it just died. The cost of repair was not worth the investment and it was well past the warranty so I discarded it.It's a shame, I liked Toshiba products but I don't plan to buy another one now.

1-0 out of 5 stars DVD player is terrible
The DVD player won't play many DVD's, even freshly unwrapped new ones.Freezes and stutters.Simply the worst piece of electronic gear I've ever owned.

2-0 out of 5 stars If you record on SLP, you better have a second VCR for playback.
I purchased this unit at fye.com about a year ago. Everything worked fine the first six months, but then I noticed that when I recorded anything on the SLP speed, the picture would start rolling like crazy on playback. I adjusted the tracking manually, also utilized the auto-tracking feature, to no avail. However, when I put the tape in another VCR, it played back fine. So this thing records alright in SLP mode, but forget about playing back any tape you record in that speed, on this machine. It's also a pain in the neck to remember to click that "TIMER REC" button after programming it to record. Forget that step, and you're out of luck. I think I'll stick with Panasonic from now on. So far, no trouble on the DVD side of this unit. For me, anyway. ... Read more
