Texas Instruments TI-83-Plus Silver Edition with Graph Link Cable
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $169.99

    Editorial Review

Leery of "special edition" products, we regarded the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition with some healthy skepticism. It's silver--so what? As you may have noticed, in the post-iMac era, everything electronic seems to boast cool translucent or glittery casing. However, the features of the TI-83 Plus Silver Edition are substantial, offering useful, powerful extras at a remarkable value.

While the mathematic and graphing tools are comparable to the TI-83 Plus, the Silver Edition boasts significantly improved speed and memory. Its processor is 2.5 times faster, and it has over 1.5 MB of memory--10 times that of the TI-83 Plus. These upgrades make the Silver Edition a significantly improved graphing tool, enabling you to work faster and save more of your equations and programs.

Like the TI-83 Plus, the Silver Edition has a large, easy-to-read 64 x 96 pixel LCD that fits 16 characters and 8 lines. Altering the contrast of the screen is intuitively easy, as is the key layout and graphing interface. Mathematic tools are substantial, including viewing equations, graphs, and coordinates simultaneously; advanced statistics and regression analysis, graphical analysis, and data analysis; and tools for engineering, financial, logarithm, trigonometry, and hyperbolic functions. The calculator is ideal for students in algebra, calculus, and statistics, as well as those taking the PSAT/NMSQT, SAT I or II, and AP College Board Tests.

    &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspMatrix operations
    &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspGraphing features
    &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspEducational Apps
    &nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbspEquation solver

The calculator is also rich in tools for those studying biology, chemistry, or physics, including a pre-programmed periodic table. Other programs included with the calculator include a spreadsheet, organizer for phone numbers, puzzle pack, probability simulation, and CBL/CBR applications.

The most exciting bonus of the Silver Edition is TI-Graph Link, which lets you connect the calculator to a computer and download programs from Texas Instruments' Web site (http://education.ti.com) and from enthusiast sites like www.ticalc.org. There you'll find thousands of programs and games for TI graphing calculators, as well as a TI-83 Plus tutorial, electronic guidebook, programming support, and discussion groups.

The calculator uses four AAA batteries and one lithium battery for backup. All batteries are included, as well as a hard slide cover, the TI-Graph Link software and cable, and a remarkably readable 60-page instruction manual. Overall, the improved power, faster speed, and included TI-Graph Link for a remarkably low price make this a truly special "special edition," and we have to admit that the silver casing does look pretty cool. --Ariel Meadow Stallings ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
This calculator is probobly the best one that i have owned. You can create graphs with it, you can do equations, you can even do complex algebra/trigonometry/calculus on this calculator. Also, for the kids, there are games that you can download quite simply of the internet for you to play in case by any chance you get bored during math class. (Don't get any bright ideas!) I know this product is very expensive, but it is well worth it once you realize how good this product actually is. Do yourself a favor, and buy this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars great calculator
I found this to be a useful calculator in high school. It definitely helped me see a lot of functions and perform experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars The gold standard for calculators
I purchased my TI-83 Plus in 1999 and still have it today. I have never had any problems with it and can only remember changing the batteries 3 or 4 times. I've even dropped it from my 2nd story balcony by accident (more like a friend knocked it off a table on the balcony) and it didn't break. When I turned it on after it fell, my calculations were still on the screen!

It is easy to use and fast enough for all high school and college mathematics.

I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a workhorse of a calculator. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

For students in any field, but especially math and sciences, the Casio CFX-9850GB Plus graphing calculator is a problem-solving tool with over 900 features for storing, graphing, and analysis. You can execute evaluation tables on a split screen (which allows you to trace the graph and scroll table values simultaneously) to display graphs and tables. With a long list of features, you can master list-based, one- and two-variable statistical calculations, a variety of regressions, statistics, hypothesis testing, and advanced financial calculations.

The large, readable display exhibits eight lines and 21 characters (15-digit, 10-plus-2 display) in three colors. Graphing functions include rectangular and polar coordinates, parametric, inequality, and vertical lines. Since graphing is animated, you can change the variables in a formula and watch the graph move accordingly.

It also performs statistical calculations such as scatter plots, histograms, box and whisker plots, and eight regression types. The dual screen shows two graphs: a graph and zoom or a graph and table on the same display. In statistical graphing you can use list-based matrix calculations of up to 26 matrices. The list editor manages up to 36 data lists and exchanges data with matrix and table modes. An instant-replay key recalls your previous entries.

The built-in communications port enables linkup to a personal computer. The CFX-9850GB stores up to 38 programs with 32 KB total memory. 5-0 out of 5 stars This calculator will last forever!
I bought my Casio CFX-9850GB Plus in 6th grade for Pre-Alg. and I'm now in 11th grade AP Calc, and my calc. still works like it did 5 years ago. The color screen is a life-saver when graphing multiple ftns. or just for something pretty to look at. It's equation solver is great for tests, and the easy-to-use menu is much better than that of the TI-graphing calcs. Also, it has been in my backpack for years, and I drop it almost daily, but it hasn't affected its performance at all. At $70, this is a bargain, and it may just be the last graphing calculator you'll ever need!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beats the TI-83
I am a math teacher at a new private Bronx high school, and compared the TI-83 with the Casio in numerous regards before deciding which one our school would use. Hands down, the Casio wins, and it is cheaper as well. Note - I do not work for Casio or TI.
    A) The calculator is more user friendly. The options are menu driven in a more intuitive way. What took me a minute or two to locate and figure out out the TI, took less than half the time on the Casio. Don't trust me- see for yourself.
    B) The Casio is slightly faster than the TI
C)Features: The casio adds a dynamic graphing system (lets you change a coefficient and watch the graph change), which is very useful when teaching. I also like the EQUA feature, which lets my students calculate 2/3 equations, 2/3 unknowns, and solve quadratic or polynomial equations. Maybe the TI does this too, but I couln't figure it out.
    D) The color thing I suppose is nice, but I use the CFX-9750, which is black and white and cheaper.

The only downside is that most colleges use the TI's, unfortunately. I liken it to most places using Microsoft when there are better alternatives out there (monopoly power). Anyway, a student who uses the Casio can do anything the TI-83 can do.
I'm a big fan, and my students seem to like it.

3-0 out of 5 stars CASIO -- "The Unexpected Extra®"
The Unexpected Extra is the cost of the computer cable and software (an optional extra purchase). It's nearly equal to the price of the calculator. That adds up to roughly the same price as the far more advanced TI-89 Titanium kit with cable and software included. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars I love my TI-83!
I bought this calculator when I started high school and I have not needed a new calculator since. It has served me well for 7 years and is still going strong.Perfect for everyday use and for any other use should you need its higher functions.I also find it very easy to use!

5-0 out of 5 stars Like an old buddy...
I have been using my TI-83 for over 6 years. It is the most reliable item I have ever purchased in my entire life. It construction is of very high quality: encased in durable, thick plastic with a highly readable screen and equally-sturdy plastic buttons, it does so many things, and does them well: graphing functions, programming support(similar to Assembly--fun!), probability and statistics options, an tons more that I haven't even explored. The instruction book is several hundred pages long and explains in excruciating detail what this baby does. The TI-83 is perfect, and just plain "feels right". This great indoorsman gives it a "must-buy" rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth its weight in gold
I'm in College Alegbra this semester and only starting to learn all the wonderful things that the TI-83 can do for you. With the TI-83 I feel so much more confident and it really shows in that my grades do improve.(It helps when you know the equations to do the problems with. ;-))I would definitely recommend this graphing calculator to anyone who needs it in college or in high school. It's invaluable.
It's also good for those days when you simply can't study and need something to occupy your time with.Hint:Use the Program feature. In the past, I used it to go on trips with.Talk about a dual-purpose gameboy!
I hope you enjoy your TI-83 as much as I did... er, do.I'm not giving it up that easy. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

With more power than most of us had in our PCs less than 20 years ago, the TI-92 Plus graphing calculator is the machine of choice for students and engineers both at the desk and on the go. It comes with over 500 KB of memory and software for working through algebra and other mathematic problems quickly and easily.

With the TI Graph Link accessory (not included), you can connect to computers and even download software upgrades. Solve linear and nonlinear equations, use the Pretty Print feature to see equations in textbook format, and work with 3-D surface graphs in real time. The QWERTY keyboard is rugged and easy to use, the 128 x 240 screen is easy on the eyes, and the calculator comes with a durable shell to protect its face when you're traveling or in the field. Additional accessories can turn the TI-92 into a mobile data-collection station, but it's just as useful at home.

Students beware: Some professors and teachers discourage, or even ban the use of calculators like the TI-92 in their classes, so make sure it's OK before you buy. Once you're set, the manual is clear and straightforward--you'll be programming in no time. Ultrageeks will love the assembly-language option, but the rest of us can get by just fine with the regular interface. The old timers might still cling to their slide rules, but anyone who needs a calculator for school or work can see why the Texas Instruments TI-92 is so popular: Its versatility, power, and portability give you the number-crunching power of a computer no matter where you are. --Rob Lightner

1-0 out of 5 stars NEEDS HIGH CONTRAST DISPLAY!!!
I'm sure the capabilities are wonderful. That's why I bought it. But, it was so difficult to use - because I couldn't see what was on the low contrast (even with adjustment) display - that it wouldn't have mattered if it had outclassed a Cray. I couldn't program it without getting a headache from eye strain. If it had a decent display, it would be great. Without reasonable input and output display, it is just a piece of junk!

4-0 out of 5 stars Make sure it is a Plus!
This is a great calculator, but because Amazon does not have a category for old ti-92's, people often sell these as PLUS models. The only major differences are things Linear Algebra, upgradable firmware, and extra memory. You will want the extra memory if you write custom programs. Before buying one of these, email the sellerand confirm it is a plus model, unless you dont care. Enjoy!

Designed with power users in mind, the TI-86 graphing calculator has all the power and functionality of the popular TI-85 but with significant enhancements aimed at students of college mathematics, engineering, and science. The TI-86 includes a function evaluation table, deep entry recall, seven different graph styles with multiple line and shading options, and slope and direction fields for differential equations. In addition, the TI-86 boasts 96 KB of user-available memory--three times more than the TI-85. There's also a new function evaluation table which shows numeric output for function, polar, parametric, and differential equation modes.

The TI-86 runs with programs designed for the TI-85 and includes all the same matrix features, but with a new matrix editor that allows the user to view and edit matrices in two dimensions. You can also view multiple lists and attach formulas to those lists for automatic computations. A new aspect of the TI-86 is the ability to customize product functionality with machine language programs downloaded from TI's Web site. Besides the strong graphing abilities, the TI-86 also has powerful calculus features like integration, derivatives, minimums, maximums, roots, and arcs. It also supports Z80 assembly language programming.

The 64 x 128 high-contrast pixel screen displays eight lines of 21 characters each plus two levels of display menus. With the TI-86, you can link to other TI-86s and TI-85s via the input/output port, and to CBLs, CBRs, and computers. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Straightforward Calculator Available
I have the TI-89 Titanium and the HP-49G+, both are excellent calculators especially for programmers. But if I need to have mathematical models/programs, I use Mathcad or Matlab on my PC anyway, hence, I don't use the TI-89T or HP-49G for that purpose. Although there are fancier/faster models available now, the elegant keypad and menu system of the TI-86 is unmatched. For me and for most people I know (mostly fellow engineers), the TI-86 (and HP-48GX) are the perennial favorites. There is a dramatic difference between the TI-86 and the TI-89 as far as the menu system goes. The TI-89 has so many functions that the only way to really implement it is through a "windows" type menu system. The TI-86 on the other hand, has all the critical functions on the keypad - which is more efficient.(i.e. x^2, 1/x, complex, convert, log, etc..... are all built-in to the keypad of TI-86).

Indeed, the TI-89T and HP-49G+ are faster, has more functions, and has more memory than the TI-86.But for the day-to-day engineering and scientific calculations, I think the TI-86 is far more efficient and straightforward.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best Graphing Design but problems with wear and tear.
i am actually shopping for an HP49 or similar. My experience with two calculators from texas instrument the TI86 and TI83+ has been positive and actually excellent if ease of use and graphics performance is the criterions. They are very well designed and the graphics as of the last generation TI's were superior than there previous hp48g.
However, the problem with both the TI86 and TI83+ is in how long they last. I bought a used TI86 in about 1997 and it lasted maybe one more year before it stopped working correctly. Recently a TI83+ I had which from the standpoint of functionality was a fine calculator stopped working after generally light use after 5 years. considering I used relatively infrequently, I wasn't satisfied.I used to own an early HP back in the 80's and it never stopped working for at least 6 or seven years until it was stolen out of my backpack. I was loyal then to them, but the last generation of calculators seemed to have some design flaws(hp48g) particularly around graphics. This generation seems to be immitating the TI's now and if they are built as well as the early ones, it is worth paying a little extra. But i haven't tried them out yet.
The last one I had(48g) was stolen or lost somewhere I believe but it continued working fine for maybe two years.
After spending onehundred plus dollars Iexpect more from a calculator in terms of wear and tear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful calculator
I bought this around mid 1997 and I'm still using it to this day.
It's helped me through AP Calc, Calc II, Calc III, Differential Equations, Advanced Engineering Math, SATs, GREs, Fundamentals of Engineering exam for EIT certification, and etc...

I actually bought a TI-89 around soph year of college just to complement the TI-86.

You see, the TI-86 is a SOLID engineering calculator. It's got fast units conversions, an intuitive and FAST menu system BUT it lacks "pretty print", handling of units for math (keeps the units throughout equations, calculators), and integration/differentiation with the variables in place (it doesn't just evaluate it). With the right software, the TI-89 is a very powerful math tool.

I used the TI-89 primarily for theoretical math but came in handy for standardized tests as well.

I would recommend getting both the TI-89 and TI-86 and start familiarizing yourself with both calculators before you start tackling tests. Check the rules and regs for calculators also - standardized tests should allow the use of the 86 and 89.

Overall, the TI-86 is a solid math tool - notice I say TOOL because that's what it is. If you have no idea what you're doing in class, the TI-86 won't give you an A.

My recommendation is to get both the TI-86 and TI-89.
Just FYI, I'm still using the TI-86 at work. The buttons show some wear and I lost the first line of the LCD because I dropped it in college. Nonetheless it's still chugging along.

Also, slap in four 750mAH NiMH batteries. You will NOT regret this because these calculators drain alkaline batteries in half a semester of intensive use. We didn't have cheap NiMH batteries back in the day - TI actually pushed the use of Rayovac Renewals (remember those rechargeable alkalines that only lasted 5 charges?) and our other choice was NiCd. Forget all that. Slap in four Energizer 750mAh NiMH batteries and you'll save yourself a LOT of money in the long run. That means more money for video games and other forms of entertainment in college. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For professional Usage
I have been using Casio calculators since my High School. In my engineering course I used FX-120 & SuperFx-100. While I am at job, I had to implement some complex differential equations on my software. I really got a good solution in the form of Casio Algebra FX 2.0 Plus. This product is simply the best, it solves my purpose. I could even try my algorithm even while I am travelling - hats of to the Programming feature. Please note I am making this comment for the AFX 2.0 Plus version.

The keys are smooth, grip is good. However the calculator is slightly bulky. Overall its a embedded computer fitting within hand.
