5-0 out of 5 stars Very good product
This calculator is probobly the best one that i have owned. You can create graphs with it, you can do equations, you can even do complex algebra/trigonometry/calculus on this calculator. Also, for the kids, there are games that you can download quite simply of the internet for you to play in case by any chance you get bored during math class. (Don't get any bright ideas!) I know this product is very expensive, but it is well worth it once you realize how good this product actually is. Do yourself a favor, and buy this product!

5-0 out of 5 stars great calculator
I found this to be a useful calculator in high school. It definitely helped me see a lot of functions and perform experiments.

5-0 out of 5 stars The gold standard for calculators
I purchased my TI-83 Plus in 1999 and still have it today. I have never had any problems with it and can only remember changing the batteries 3 or 4 times. I've even dropped it from my 2nd story balcony by accident (more like a friend knocked it off a table on the balcony) and it didn't break. When I turned it on after it fell, my calculations were still on the screen!

It is easy to use and fast enough for all high school and college mathematics.

I'd recommend it to anyone who needs a workhorse of a calculator. ... Read more

Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing Calculator
Average Customer Review: 4.5 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $190.00
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

    Editorial Review

This advanced graphing calculator is packed with more features than you might know how to use. The TI-89 lets you perform the expected functions of an advanced calculator--basic math, algebra, calculus, graphs, matrices, and statistical functions. However, you can also do cool stuff like create animations as well as graph 3-D rotations and plot contours.

The manual that ships with the TI-89 is a killer, presenting over 500 pages of clear, concise definitions, function explanations, examples, drawings, and appendices. It's divided into well-organized chapters that cover all the major features of the calculator. Graphing functions include basic function graphing, parametric graphing, polar graphing, sequence graphing, 3-D graphing, and differential-equation graphing. Additionally, the TI-89 includes symbolic manipulation, constants and measurement units, statistics and data plots, a numeric solver, a text editor, programming capabilities, tables, a split-screen function, variable management, and the ability to link to other calculators or a computer.

The large, color-coded keys are easy to read and find--a nice touch on such a feature-heavy calculator. An improvement over earlier Texas Instruments graphing calculators is the addition of one-touch X, Y, and Z variable keys. The large LCD screen is also adjustable to your environment; we were able to view it clearly in a variety of lighting. The TI-89 comes with an attached, hard slide cover that protects it from getting knocked around in a backpack.

The TI-89's flash technology allows you to upgrade to future software versions so you don't have to continually invest in new calculators. The whopping 500 K of memory is more than sufficient for your stored functions, programs, and data. You can also create custom menus or use the default menu. Another cool feature is the Program Editor, which gives you the ability to program. The TI-89 also comes with an input/output port and cable, letting you synch up with other TI-89s or TI-92s. --Jill Lightner

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but user unfriendly
THis machine does it all provided that you learn how to use it well. I spent quite some time on this calculator and I am very confident using it now. However it could have been more user friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY unless you are in calculus
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:This is a fabulous calculator (thus the five star rating), but inappropriate for students in math below calculus.Below calc, most courses that require a graphing calculator are geared towards the 83/84, so unless you are very comfortable with the 89 it may prove difficult to translate in-class activities onto an 89.Do not even THINK about buying this calculator unless you are taking calculus or a calculus-based course.Stick with the 83/84.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Calculator (For Calculus ETC)
Awesome calculator. Last class I used it for was Calculus for Engineering I. I like the "pretty print" which will display equations exactly as you would right them. The calculus tools, and the resolution of the screen, and the ability to scroll through previous equations.

My favorite T1 so far that I've used. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If you bought yourself a financial calculator during the 1980s, chances are it was this bad boy. Nothing has changed since its introduction--it still uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), is easy and versatile in programming, and has a thin, sturdy casing. Certainly, there's been newer, fancier calculators introduced since, but there's something to be said for the quality of classics.

The HP 12C's functions include all the basics--such as calculating APR, NPV, and IRR--and statistics are a snap. For students new to financial calculators, this is an excellent place to start. For the most part, the manual reads like a minitextbook, walking you through sample problems and situations followed by graphs and tables demonstrating the technique--and you can even check your results. The section on creating programs does seem to be written for the technically ignorant, addressing in detail how you could possibly benefit from using programs, but it'll still help you get the job done.

In general, it's a bit slower than newer models, just like last year's computer isn't as speedy as today's new release. On the plus side, it's just 3 by 5 inches and slips easily into a pocket. The bottom is printed with a few little cheat notes for common functions, which is nice for quick reference. The HP 12C's one-year warranty and available tech-support line offer reassurance this little workhorse will continue to be an industry standard for years to come. --Jill Lightner

5-0 out of 5 stars Venerable, Compact, Elegant
I first began using this 'calc' in 1986. A commercial realtor friend told me this was what "everyone" (everyone to be taken seriously) used. I carried it on vacation, to church, to the supermarket, and everywhere, determined to learn in any spare moment its secrets and work its magic. The 12C's flat profile and compact size slips easily into a sportcoat pocket and you can rotate it continually in one hand just for fun! The User's Manual was not especially user friendly, but it was (is still?) a key to the treasure. It also can be easily slipped into a pocket, but I found the glossy pages annoyingly difficult to pencil-in notes.HP also makes the cheaper 10B II calc that the College for Financial Planning (CFP) recommends for their coursework. I often use it at work, and when teaching at a local college I am not inclined to require students buy the more expensive HP 12C. The more expensive HP 17B II leaves me cold. There is an elegance to the 12C that has not been surpassed. I own two 12C's just in case one is damaged! The Polish notation ('throw mother from the train a kiss' viz. 6, ENTER, 2, + {answer} 8 )is an eccentricity (like Uncle Fred's table manners) that is quickly embraced...a price for membership to the club. HP actually makes a version of the 12C that allows you to change this feature, but my guess is that it has never gained popularity.

5-0 out of 5 stars You really don't need it
I have had an HP 12C for 20 years.Yes it is wonderful calculator but you really shouldn't spend the extra money for it.

It is expensive because it was designed for programming and elaborate cashflow analysis.Yes indeed in the early 80s people used to program 100+ step programs in to these dinky but powerful machines.Nobody would do it today. We have spreadsheets for that.

The machine uses RPN (reverse Polish notation) so you have to get used to that, it has over 30 memories (I doubt you will ever use more than 3), the anachronistic programming capability and lots of funny symbols that I don't even know what they mean.My advice is to buy the HP B10.You can get it for half the price.Yeah its not quite the status symbol the 12C is but its all that you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've had mine 20 years
I've had my hp 20C for 20 years.Still works great.Still does everything I want it to.

I'm stunned they still sell these things.Same design, same functionality, almost the same price (there were about $300 in 1985).What other piece of calculating electronics can claim the same thing? When these came out the Internet was called Arpa net, Personal computers came with 32k memory, floppies had 360k capacity, modems were 300 baud and nobody had "email". ... HP HP49G Graphing Calculator
Average Customer Review: 3.0 out of 5 stars
    Electronics
    list price: $179.99

    Editorial Review

Is it possible to have it all--brains, beauty, and brawn? Hewlett-Packardcertainly thinks so, and its HP 49G graphing calculator is its shiningexample.

There's no getting around the cool styling of the 49G: complete with a sleekmetallic blue exterior and a groovy translucent blue hard slide cover, the 49Gcommands attention. When we were using it in public, it received plenty of looksand inquiries.

But how does it measure up in terms of power? Competing with the notorious TexasInstruments TI89 advanced graphing calculator is tough business, but HP pulls itoff with some success. This graphing calculator has all the bells and whistles, including a whopping 1.5 MB of user memory; 2 MB of flash ROM, which enablesfuture software upgrades; a built-in Computer Algebra System (CAS); math, scientific, statistical, financial, and 2-D/3-D graphing capabilities;programming capabilities with reverse Polish notation, assembly, and HP Basiclanguages; and a unit-to-unit and PC/Macintosh connectivity feature. It alsofeatures an equation solver, vectors, lists, arrays, matrices, expressions, andobject storing.

One key feature we liked is the history screen, which displayswhat you've already input, so you can reference it to determine what went wrongand correct it. Another notable function is the 49G's alarm function. You canset the date and time on the calculator, and program the alarm along with a textmessage to remind you of appointments. You can also set control alarms, whichperform functions such as automatically running a program when you're not usingthe calculator. Additionally, the calculator emits beeps when you enter anincorrect function, which can be annoying at times--especially when you'realready frustrated.

One of this calculator's flaws is that it is hard to read the second and thirdfunctions above each key. In keeping with the calculator's sense of aesthetics, the print is in blue and red, which is difficult to see, especially in lowlighting situations. It also has a one-touch X-variable key, but no Y- or Z-variablekeys.

We wished the manual had gone into greater depth and provided clearer examples, but this might be a concern only to those who don't immediately get the fullfunctionality of the 49G. Unlike some manuals we've seen, the 49G does not showboth the necessary keys needed to input an equation along with how they appearon the screen. We also would have liked for the manual to include moreexamples.

If style is just as important to you as functionality, the 49G isthe coolest looking calculator we've seen. But if it's pure power you're lookingfor, you'll probably be just as pleased with any one of the 3-D graphingcalculators currently on the market.

    Pros:

    • Sleek exterior
    • Lots of memory
    • Full functionality
    Cons:
    • Alpha and second functions somewhat hard to read
    • Manual not fully fleshed out

1-0 out of 5 stars Hardware too slow for software
I wasted my hard earned money on this calculator.I was so thoroughly disappointed in the calculator that I gave up using it.It was a total and thorough frustration. For example, if you try to graph anything with this calculator, it takes a hundred years (a little exaggeration but expresses the idea) to finish.Even adding simple integers, the calculator would chug along very slowly (e.g. 3+13).Putting the calculator into non-teaching mode (I forgot the actual name for the feature) helped a little though.
What attracted me to it was the reviews here and elsewhere. There are some nice features to the calculator. The buttons are nice, the feel of the calculator is nice and the functions are fine as well.
However, it is in my opinion a mistake to put this kind of functionality in a calculator without also putting in the hardware to perform the requested operations in a reasonably timely manner. This calculator is not worth more than $20.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst of them all(how hp has lost its identity)!!!
I'm a huge fan of hp calculators as a matter fact I've even started a collection of calculators. The real strenght of hp graphic calculator WAS the quality of the keyboard with the huge enter key, the RPN entry mode, the design and the huge power of computing and programming even tough the stack management is a little bit painfull at first. The HP48 is the real deal, the Rolls Royce AND the Farrari of all the calculators!!!!!!!!!!!
The hp 49g has lost those qualities trying to be a poor TI wannabe. The screen is awfull you can't see properly, the keys are soft and VERY umprecise plus if you want to use the RPN entry mode you have to press too many keys at once!!! So my advice is stick with the hp48 series or buy a real TI instead!!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Stinker for most, nuisance for the few who need its capacity
I have already invested far too much time in this product to try to be witty or clever about its poor quality and unfortunate design.

Power users may decide to live with its negatives because they can't find a portable alternative with equivalent math function and memory.

For all other potential customers, the HP49G gives new meaning to the marketing phrase, turning point.

Warnings: worst HP keystroke-touch for any HP Scientific Calculator; display harder to read than contemporary hi-end graphing calculators from TI or Japanese companies; documentation shipped with product would be comical if you could forget that you had just paid over a hundred dollars for it; first HP Scientific Calculator to be released with major reliability problems that caused it to crash repeatedly (but credit is due to programmers and engineers who have spent the last four years on bug fixing).

Friends show me that new versions of the 49G have improved. But it is sad to see the company throw away a reputation earned over three decades. ... Read more

For every application there is a calculator, and for financial functions, this is it. The HP19BII features four display lines with 23 characters each, plus6,500 bytes of memory. Offering over 450 business, statistical, andscientific functions, the calculator is also easily programmable for customequations and functions. Personal information management applications, currency and measurement unit conversions, and functions that help youtrack loan payments, interest rates, amortization, and internal rate orreturn make this calculator a must for all business applications.

Advanced users may find the calculator's functions a little dated. Itincludes the ACRS table for calculating depreciation applied to limitedpartnership assets, which was replaced by Modified ACRS (MACRS) in 1986.But many users will find that the extensive functions and programmabilitycompensate for this shortcoming. We especially appreciated the time anddata management functions like the alarm clock, calendar, appointments, anddate arithmetic, number lists, editing, sorting, and storing.

    Great device!
The best that I've had. Unfortunately, the battery cover is too fragile and broken.
The worst thing is that now this model from HP is discontinued

5-0 out of 5 stars Irreplaceable for finance professionals
Just have to log my support for this great calculator, similar to others I bought an HP 19B in the beginning of my college years (1984) along with all the related add'l manuals available at the time (marketing, banking, real estate,?) and have loved and used it ever since - despite religious use of Palm devices since their inception.Yes my battery cover broke also, but high tensile clear tape quickly remedied that. Unfortunately a mishap damaged the keypad functionality requiring a replacement.I'm estatic to be able to replace it so easily! May buy two to make sure there's always a backup.
