Plus, it displays graphs and evaluates tables on a split screen, allowing you to trace the graph and scroll through table values simultaneously.
The clear, readable display exhibits 12 characters and eight lines, in 64 x 96 pixels on an LCD screen. The TI-83 Plus has a pragmatic key layout and an easy-to-use graphing interface, with a simple programming language for creating conversion programs. The TI-83 Plus stores and analyzes up to 10 matrices combined with data storage in lists containing up to 999 elements per list. You can also solve equations interactively for different variables. With the TI-83 Plus, you can view an equation, its graph, and the coordinates all at one time. Jump from point to point by entering a number. Several useful plot types are available, including scatter, box-and-whisker, XY-line, histogram, and normal probability plots. Advanced statistics and regression analysis, graphical analysis, and data analysis are readily accessed, along with features for calculus, engineering, financial, logarithm, trigonometry, and hyperbolic functions--all crucial tools for advanced analysis.
With its clear display and fast processing, the TI-83 Plus incorporates graphing tools for mathematics and science course work, including statistics and finance. Texas Instruments TI-89 Advanced Graphing Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $190.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This advanced graphing calculator is packed with more features than you might know how to use. The TI-89 lets you perform the expected functions of an advanced calculator--basic math, algebra, calculus, graphs, matrices, and statistical functions. However, you can also do cool stuff like create animations as well as graph 3-D rotations and plot contours. The manual that ships with the TI-89 is a killer, presenting over 500 pages of clear, concise definitions, function explanations, examples, drawings, and appendices. It's divided into well-organized chapters that cover all the major features of the calculator. Graphing functions include basic function graphing, parametric graphing, polar graphing, sequence graphing, 3-D graphing, and differential-equation graphing. Additionally, the TI-89 includes symbolic manipulation, constants and measurement units, statistics and data plots, a numeric solver, a text editor, programming capabilities, tables, a split-screen function, variable management, and the ability to link to other calculators or a computer. The large, color-coded keys are easy to read and find--a nice touch on such a feature-heavy calculator. An improvement over earlier Texas Instruments graphing calculators is the addition of one-touch X, Y, and Z variable keys. The large LCD screen is also adjustable to your environment; we were able to view it clearly in a variety of lighting. The TI-89 comes with an attached, hard slide cover that protects it from getting knocked around in a backpack. The TI-89's flash technology allows you to upgrade to future software versions so you don't have to continually invest in new calculators. The whopping 500 K of memory is more than sufficient for your stored functions, programs, and data. You can also create custom menus or use the default menu. Another cool feature is the Program Editor, which gives you the ability to program. The TI-89 also comes with an input/output port and cable, letting you synch up with other TI-89s or TI-92s. --Jill Lightner Pros:

HP HP12C Financial Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $87.51 -- our price: $64.59 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If you bought yourself a financial calculator during the 1980s, chances are it was this bad boy. Nothing has changed since its introduction--it still uses Reverse Polish Notation (RPN), is easy and versatile in programming, and has a thin, sturdy casing. Certainly, there's been newer, fancier calculators introduced since, but there's something to be said for the quality of classics. The HP 12C's functions include all the basics--such as calculating APR, NPV, and IRR--and statistics are a snap. For students new to financial calculators, this is an excellent place to start. For the most part, the manual reads like a minitextbook, walking you through sample problems and situations followed by graphs and tables demonstrating the technique--and you can even check your results. The section on creating programs does seem to be written for the technically ignorant, addressing in detail how you could possibly benefit from using programs, but it'll still help you get the job done. In general, it's a bit slower than newer models, just like last year's computer isn't as speedy as today's new release. On the plus side, it's just 3 by 5 inches and slips easily into a pocket. The bottom is printed with a few little cheat notes for common functions, which is nice for quick reference. The HP 12C's one-year warranty and available tech-support line offer reassurance this little workhorse will continue to be an industry standard for years to come. --Jill Lightner Pros:

HP HP49G Graphing Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $179.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Is it possible to have it all--brains, beauty, and brawn? Hewlett-Packardcertainly thinks so, and its HP 49G graphing calculator is its shiningexample. There's no getting around the cool styling of the 49G: complete with a sleekmetallic blue exterior and a groovy translucent blue hard slide cover, the 49Gcommands attention. When we were using it in public, it received plenty of looksand inquiries. But how does it measure up in terms of power? Competing with the notorious TexasInstruments TI89 advanced graphing calculator is tough business, but HP pulls itoff with some success. This graphing calculator has all the bells and whistles, including a whopping 1.5 MB of user memory; 2 MB of flash ROM, which enablesfuture software upgrades; a built-in Computer Algebra System (CAS); math, scientific, statistical, financial, and 2-D/3-D graphing capabilities;programming capabilities with reverse Polish notation, assembly, and HP Basiclanguages; and a unit-to-unit and PC/Macintosh connectivity feature. It alsofeatures an equation solver, vectors, lists, arrays, matrices, expressions, andobject storing. One key feature we liked is the history screen, which displayswhat you've already input, so you can reference it to determine what went wrongand correct it. Another notable function is the 49G's alarm function. You canset the date and time on the calculator, and program the alarm along with a textmessage to remind you of appointments. You can also set control alarms, whichperform functions such as automatically running a program when you're not usingthe calculator. Additionally, the calculator emits beeps when you enter anincorrect function, which can be annoying at times--especially when you'realready frustrated. One of this calculator's flaws is that it is hard to read the second and thirdfunctions above each key. In keeping with the calculator's sense of aesthetics, the print is in blue and red, which is difficult to see, especially in lowlighting situations. It also has a one-touch X-variable key, but no Y- or Z-variablekeys. We wished the manual had gone into greater depth and provided clearer examples, but this might be a concern only to those who don't immediately get the fullfunctionality of the 49G. Unlike some manuals we've seen, the 49G does not showboth the necessary keys needed to input an equation along with how they appearon the screen. We also would have liked for the manual to include moreexamples. If style is just as important to you as functionality, the 49G isthe coolest looking calculator we've seen. But if it's pure power you're lookingfor, you'll probably be just as pleased with any one of the 3-D graphingcalculators currently on the market. Pros:

Power users may decide to live with its negatives because they can't find a portable alternative with equivalent math function and memory. For all other potential customers, the HP49G gives new meaning to the marketing phrase, turning point. Warnings: worst HP keystroke-touch for any HP Scientific Calculator; display harder to read than contemporary hi-end graphing calculators from TI or Japanese companies; documentation shipped with product would be comical if you could forget that you had just paid over a hundred dollars for it; first HP Scientific Calculator to be released with major reliability problems that caused it to crash repeatedly (but credit is due to programmers and engineers who have spent the last four years on bug fixing). Friends show me that new versions of the 49G have improved. But it is sad to see the company throw away a reputation earned over three decades. ... Read more Asin: B00001RMDB |

HP19BII Business Consultant Calculator Average Customer Review: Electronics list price: $139.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review For every application there is a calculator, and for financial functions, this is it. The HP19BII features four display lines with 23 characters each, plus6,500 bytes of memory. Offering over 450 business, statistical, andscientific functions, the calculator is also easily programmable for customequations and functions. Personal information management applications, currency and measurement unit conversions, and functions that help youtrack loan payments, interest rates, amortization, and internal rate orreturn make this calculator a must for all business applications. Advanced users may find the calculator's functions a little dated. Itincludes the ACRS table for calculating depreciation applied to limitedpartnership assets, which was replaced by Modified ACRS (MACRS) in 1986.But many users will find that the extensive functions and programmabilitycompensate for this shortcoming. We especially appreciated the time anddata management functions like the alarm clock, calendar, appointments, anddate arithmetic, number lists, editing, sorting, and storing. The HP19BII usesthree N batteries. It comes with a one-year warranty. ... Read more Features Reviews (16)
